TRANSCRIPT: MISSY SPEASE/CANCER SURVIVOR: Cancer's not always a death sentence. Though when you are the patient and you're diagnosed with cancer, the first thing you think of is: I'm going to die. And life becomes different.
I had had a cough- a previous cough from having bronchitis. The nurse that I worked with, she said: Missy, you still have that cough. And I was like, I'm good. I promise you I am good. And she's like: No. Get back there and get a chest x-ray.
I saw Dr. Guerrini. He ordered a chest x-ray for me. I had the chest x-ray and I went on back to work. A couple hours later, Dr. Guerrini came to me and said: I need to speak to you just a moment in private.
I’m a little bit in shock. But you know, things like this don't happen to me. So I didn't think anything of it. It's probably just an infection. My primary care doctor- Dr. Blake Long- scheduled me to see Dr. Chen in Pulmonary. I saw him, he did the biopsy. And he informed me: We were able to swab inside the lung and there are definitely cancer cells.
Immediately for me, it’s guilt. I was a smoker for 30 years- you know, what have I done to myself?
So I met with the TOPS clinic to have the availability to go and to sit down with three doctors- my cardiothoracic surgeon, my oncologist, and my radiation oncologist. And then the three got together and they spoke with each other- you know- what's the plan? What should we do? From three different aspects.
They told me I was a Stage IIIB lung cancer. And I knew that that was pretty serious- being in the medical field. So, they scheduled my surgery for February 1, Dr. Lata sat me down and explained to me that he needed to go into the mediastinal area and check those lymph nodes because those would not pick up on an MRI and he needed to check those to make sure. So I went in February 1, which also ended up being the same day as my son's last basketball game and homecoming. And I thought: Oh my goodness! He's a senior. I'm missing homecoming. It was a very trying day.
My whole entire family were there at six o'clock in the morning to see me off to surgery.
I went in at six a.m. and I woke up at 5:30 p.m.
The tumor was an aggressive tumor. He got it out. He removed the right upper lobe. And then he sent the lymph nodes for pathology and when those came back, all three lymph nodes were negative.
With them being negative, it means I do not have to do chemo- I do not have to do radiation.
You know, now I'm recovering from surgery and it's like: Wow. Really. So I go from a Stage IIIB to a Stage IB. And this is all due to early detection.
I am so thankful for the nurse that pushed me, the doctors that took care of me, my family, my friends that supported me, and where I'm at today.
So I've always wanted to be a runner. So I started training. We did the Tough Mudder in November, that very same year. And now I am training with my older brother to do a full marathon in Honolulu December 13th of this year.
There's just so many things that we can do for ourselves to detect cancer early and the options are there. I didn't think this would happen to me- but it does happen to us- mom, co-worker, wife. And it can happen to anyone. And during this time, I had friends whose niece was diagnosed with lung cancer one month after me that had progressed. And she passed away the very same year- actually three months later. And you know, I took that really hard- knowing that could have been me. Without early detection, that would have been me. And you know, both my boys that year graduated, one graduated from high school, one graduated from college in May and I was informed that had it not been for my early detection, I would not have been here in May of 2013 to see my two boys graduate. - วิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยี

My neighbour wasn't so lucky when it came to having lung cancer. She died aged just 59 over a year later after being diagnosed with it. She never smoked at all and was a healthy person right up to her diagnosis. It can happen to anyone at anytime.
Stage 4 lung cancer, which spread to my bones and liver, was given 3 months without treatments. Got on a clinical trial in Aug 2018 with immunotherapy drugs..and now in remission as of Feb 2019...will continue infusions every two weeks for life to try and keep me cancer free...as there is no cure for stage 4 lung cancer...at least for now...who knows, maybe I will be one of those that really will live a long life?

Look into Essiac Tea, avoid sugar it feeeds cancer.
My mother Dx with lung cancer in 1970 and after surgery and radiation she lived until 1989 dying from something else. She didn't stop smoking either. She said why shut the barn door once the horse got out. However, her quality of life was very poor the next 19 years until she died. Much better to not smoke.

I have COPD so I would have yearly CTscans, and last year the spot in my right lung doubled in size from the previous one, so I had a biopsy and was proven to be cancerous. A month later I had a lobe ectomy of the upper right lung. But I did have to do 4 rounds of chemo, witch was hell. A year later still no evidence of cancer. So I’m also lucky I was diagnosed early.
I'm having Surgery on Friday for a Tumor that grew from my last CT Scan. Did you know it was Cancer before Surgery? The Doctor said he doesn't know. My Pulmonologist said she didn't know. So aside from having Surgery alone (thanks to COVID19 where I live no Visitors are allowed in Hospitals right now. Scared of what screams "Cancer" and trying to be prepared.

Recently, I found a letter that was overdue reminding my father to go for a second ct low dose pulmonary nodules scan since they detected an abnormal finding. It broke my heart to know he kept it from us, only for me to find out on my own accidentally. We’re praying for it to not be non cancerous, but we’re not sure. I’m grateful to hear your story, it’s gives me a great source of comfort and hope!

I was diagnosed with stage 2 lung cancer back in 1998 had a rough few years but iam still here.
I thank all the people involved in my care,treatment, support. To the doctors, nurses, psychologist support staff, they treated me with respect, care, but most of all they treated me with love. The fact iam still here to post this I owe it all to what was referred to as a team

I had that same persistent cough I thought I had a cold my wife made a apontment ad they found a huge tumor that pushed my spine over and attached to my hart and esophagus and spine but did not penetrate my linph nodes they were inflamed took tthemover 5 hours to remove that tumor that was 10 years ago. I also was a 30 year plus smoker im glad to hear you survived that and doing well! The must be some reason were still hear I think about that a lot i share my experience with smokers that I see doing the same stupid thing I did lol

What were your symptoms aside from the persistent cough? Was you experiencing pain in the spine/back/neck/shoulder? Did it affect your heart rhythm?

I have had a lingering cough close to 3 months now. Voice is still hoarse. I was thinking of cold as well. However, since past few days felt like there's chest pain& discomfort and experiencing bone pain and body chills. Had just recuperated from fever yesterday. I dont have guts to consult the doc.

My memaw had a hereditary lung cancer. She never smoked. Her mama had it too. My Memaw had her lung removed and is otherwise healthy
Shirley here I know this 7 yrs. I smoked for 30 yrs I finally quit I was having trouble breathing, I had chest xray and CT scan nothing showed up but my COPD no blood clot or tumors. I so relived. I keep my COPD under control, they have different meds out there if mine isn't working that good.
Since 2019, I have begged for doctors to take me seriously. Even the ER wouldn't listen, despite countless visits (and tons in debt). In June, they found a nodule. They scheduled a catscan which finally happened 2 weeks ago (today is September 6th).
Last Wednesday I was told there is now 2 dominant masses within the right upper lobe. There is smaller nodules throughout the upper right lobe as well as nodules within the middle right lobe and lower lobe. They said this is concerning for the neoplastic process. I also have mild mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Upon reading the paperwork...there is also a paratracheal lymph node measuring up to 1.1cm in the short axis and a small prevascular lymph node present as well. IMPRESSION being that there are multiple mass-like areas of consolidation within the lungs.
I don't have a clue what any of this means nor did my Doctor explain any of it to me. Honestly I didn't even know it was more than possible cancer. He sat me down to tell me how serious this was....even called my partner in. I still know nothing of what I read.
He said I need a biopsy...that is where I am at. As of right now, no phone call or waiting list yet and I am terrified because I don't know what is happening.
Hearing this story gives me hope that if it is confirmed, maybe...MAYBE I can beat this.
But then again, I have some serious doubts.
The last 2 days I have been in & out of the ER. First time they gave me some sort of anti-inflammatory & some fluids through an IV. They said my left jaw joint was dysfunctional...but left it at that. The next day I went in, I was told I was dealing with Bradycardia. I was sent home with the advice to drink a bit of coffee, move around & drink twice as much water.
I don't even know what I was getting at by making this comment anymore. All I know is I'm afraid and I am basically on my own with learning everything I can about Lung Cancer.
Father please comfort and restore.

Wow!! Missy's co worker that pushed her to get it checked have definitely saved her life. I think that was close of being a terminal diagnosis. I hope Missy is healthy and doing well.
Lung cancer is not your fault. Years ago people did not think anything of second hand smoke which has raised suspicion of lung care. I hope you are doing better.

My opinion is if you can remove the cancer source, the outcome is excellent. Taking chemotherapy, and radiation Is just a bandaid, until it spreads to other areas.

My mom is having lung cancer! God please save her. None of the known mutation came out positive to start targeted therapy. She is done with 3 chemo therapy and still the cancer progression didn’t stop. Doctor says she has only 5-6 months even after giving her chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is a big scam!!

My constantly urged my long time friend and work colleague to do one of the 'free bowel cancer tests' the govt had sent out to everybody over 50. An easy simple thing to do - we all did it, but I couldn't get her to do it. As it turned out 2 years later she was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer. 12 months later she passed away. Be alert, never assume, there are no second prizes in this.
I have had a persistent cough for last four weeks i had to have an x ray yesterday ..My doctor has put me on antibiotics and steroids for a week.. Im worried sick waiting now for results of x ray

hi, i will get done a Thorax CT-Scan next Nov 16. before they had found 3 nodules in my lungs, then i had a biopsy done, and it said it was Cryptococosis. But, i am not sure now.

I was diagnosed with testicular cancer Jan 2018. The removed in it February and it turned out to be stage 1 luckily. They had me doing 3-6 month CT scans and everything was clear up until 3 months ago. I went in for my 5th scan and they found am "18mm nodule" in my left lower lobe and scheduled me for another scan in 3 months to see if it progresses.
I have that scan at the end of the week to find out if it's cancerous basically. Been a nervous wreck for the last 3 months waiting to figure out what it is.

Got lucky as most are not getting the proper diagnosis from drug dealers.
