  • "There are more drugs in development now for small cell lung cancer than the culmination of all prior studies for small cell." - Dr. Jacob Sands
In this episode of the Lung Cancer Living Room, Danielle Hicks, Chief Patient Officer at GO2, leads a conversation with Dr. Jacob Sands, a physician at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, on new developments in small cell lung cancer research and the dynamic of patient-physician communications.
Dr. Sands delves deep into the staging and treatment options for small cell lung cancer, specifically discussing the different therapies recommended for limited and extensive stage diseases. He highlights the promising observation that some individuals with Stage IV disease have been cured using a combination of chemotherapy and immunotherapy.
The conversation also covers the role of prophylactic cranial irradiation in treating microscopic tumors in the brain and compares its outcomes with MRI observation followed by irradiation when tumors are detected. Dr. Sands goes on to discuss the progression of non-small into small cell lung cancer, and the panel addresses common misconceptions about supportive or palliative care and its positive impact on treatment outcomes.
The importance of discussing side effects with physicians to better mitigate issues and improve long-term outcomes is emphasized. The discussion also includes recent research on tarlatamab, a novel therapy that uses DLL3 to bind cancer cells with immune cells, and the development of antibody-drug conjugates as targeted chemotherapy. The panel also explores ongoing efforts to subtype small cell lung cancer into four broad categories to tailor treatment more effectively.
Dr. Sands underscores the importance of considering clinical trials for second-line treatment, given the urgency of first-line treatment in small cell lung cancer. He concludes the episode by offering observations, encouragement, and non-clinical advice for individuals living with small cell lung cancer. This video is a must-watch for anyone seeking a comprehensive understanding of small cell lung cancer treatment options, recent research developments, and the importance of supportive care and clinical trials in managing this disease.

Adenocarcinoma? I was just told I have a 5mm nodule that's called a ground glass nodule. I'm lucky that these types of nodules are very slow growing and tend to be benign. So for now, it's surveillance every 12 months.

Thank you for this information. I will be following your channel as I was diagnosed with limited sclc on 4/30/23 at the age of 73. I have had the first rounds of chemo and radiation including the prohiylactic brain radiation. (I had an adverse reaction to etoposide after the first round.) I am now in the process of trying to move forward and heal whatever damage(s) to my body from these processes.

I have a problem with the words "healthcare" and "expertise". You might get a little closer with integrative oncology but pharma pushers are neither experts on cancer care or available treatments. They are experts at doing what they are told which is allopathic/Rockefeller protocol. How is America doing with this model?
The United States spends more on health care than any other country in the world, but Americans continue to live relatively unhealthier and shorter lives than peers in other high-income countries.
The United States spends more than any other country in the world on health care, with an average of $12,555 per person in 2022.
Health expenditures per person in the U.S. are over $4,000 more than any other high-income nation.
Americans have a lower life expectancy than peers in other high-income countries, with an average life expectancy of 78.7 years in 2022.
The U.S. has a higher infant mortality rate than many other high-income countries, with 5.6 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2022.
The U.S. performs worse in long-term health outcomes measures, such as life expectancy, compared to other high-income countries.
The U.S. has a higher rate of maternal mortality and congestive heart failure hospital admissions compared to other high-income countries.
Patient safety measures, such as obstetric trauma and treatment errors, are also a concern in the U.S.

A recent Johns Hopkins study claims more than 250,000 people in the U.S. die every year from medical errors. Other reports claim the numbers to be as high as 440,000.
Medical errors are the third-leading cause of death after heart disease and cancer.

What is this woman wearing. Honestly there is decorum - why wear a dress that barely covers what you needn’t be showing. You’re not at the beach. 🏝️
