Is it Lung Cancer? (signs and symptoms)

  • Could it be lung cancer? What are the symptoms of lung cancer? This video is for those who are scared they may have lung cancer. This health scare is very common and you need to see your doctor for accurate information because internet searches may lead you to become scared and self-diagnose incorrectly, or have a false sense of reassurance.
Your mind is not objective and can be influenced by emotions, leading to unconscious bias. You may find arguments to support what you already think (even if irrational). Be aware that the mind can play tricks on you.
    Lung cancer facts:
    Who gets it?
Normally older individuals, who smoked for many years (20+) and maybe worked with carcinogens / had environmental exposures. It is rare in non-smokers and young people.
    Symptoms of lung cancer?
Often there can be no symptoms (incidental finding on x-ray/CT). Other times there may be an ongoing cough, coughing up blood, weight loss, repeated episodes of pneumonia in the same area of the lung. Chest pain is actually quite rare at the beginning (unless the tumor affects pleura). Other health events may also occur (unprovoked blood clot, abnormal electrolyte levels etc.)
    How is lung cancer diagnosed?
It's important to first see your doctor to assess the the risk in your case. An initial chest x-ray may be performed. In people who have a high risk (heavy smokers, older individuals), a low dose chest CT scan to screen for lung cancer may be done. If a suspicious nodule or spot on your lung is found, it may be initially just monitored with repeat CT (Is it growing?). Other tests may also be requested depending on the case (i.e. PET scan, bronchoscopy, etc.)
If you are worried about your health, please go see your doctor.

My son is 31 , a non smoker, and was diagnosed with stage 4 Lung cancer last July , it had already spread to his liver and spine. He has battled through some agonising treatments, including chemotherapy , immunotherapy , radiotherapy , but sadly all treatments are now exhausted and the tumour on the liver is growing rapidly. I came across this article as I find it helps to reach out to people who have gone or are going through similar , i find this extremely interesting as my son has been a garage mechanic for the last 12 years. As an avid gym goer 5/6 days a week, the cancer only presented itself as a cough , by then it was too late, as it was an aggressive cancer that had already spread, he’s now on end of life care, it’s heartbreaking knowing his time is now limited , so yes, it is rare for it to happen to the younger ones but it does happen

Garages a lot of times are full of toxic dust & other air pollutants. People work around dust & other air pollutants don't realize how much the bacteria from it is damaging their lungs. I advise to use a gas mask & clean clean clean, attack & destroy dust. Use spray bottles to help get rid of dust.

I am 75 years old woman. Now I got the same problem. Severe cough from the chest and chest pain which spreads to stomach. When the spreads in my stomach, it is severe pain like gastic pain. I showed it my local MD doctor says it's gastric trouble. In my Xray its same like the xray shown in the picture
Half cut lung image. But what to do, my local doctor gave me some pain killer for gastric. I don't understand what to do. Please suggest. Thank you.😢

My dad’s was in his pleural it was very painful up into his shoulder. He was a non smoker but worked his entire life as a diesel mechanic and they believe it was his exposures that caused this. He was stage 4 when diagnosed. Lived 8 months once given the news. I miss him so much.

So sorry about your dad. My husband works as a car painter. Workers wear masks now but they still breathe in some paint fumes even if it's less. When he first began doing this type of job as a teenager workers didn't wear masks. He's now 58 so I wonder how much damage these paint fumes may have actually done to his lungs over the years. Plus, his dad died of lung cancer. I worry a lot about him but nothing can be done about it. He will either get it or he won't. I think genetics may play a part in some patients though and oddly enough, I've known a few people who've smoked for years and have never developed lung cancer. They ended up living until old age and dying of something else. Go figure.

I do know mind can play tricks on you. Friend passed away from cancer and I had this idea that pain my back was cancer. I went to my doctor told him about it wanted my liver scanned because I had been previously diagnosed with fatter liver. I went had an ultrasound and same diagnoses fatter liver the same day I got the results the back pain went away in that area. I figured out it was in my mind based on fear of cancer. We have to get over the fear of death and accept that it will be all our fate don't waste life minutes on fear. Nothing wrong with getting something checked out.

I had a tumour in my upper left lobe of lung that grew through my shoulder up into the the C2 vertebrae of spine. I worked 12 hours 5 days a week in deep sea crabbing and then a year of tree arborist so I consider that hard work. No shortness of breath ( 2 min 11 sec breath hold underwater ) fit and healthy but putting on weight. Lots of night sweats.
Only found out about tumour because my elbow hurt a lot. CT MRI scans and doc gives me the bad news , Non Hodgkin's lymphoma, so not lung cancer just cancer in the lung.
6 administrations of chemo over 18 weeks and I'm fixed. 2 years in remission so far.
And in Australia I didn't even have to pay any money at all for any of the treatments and medications and in Australia we don't even need insurance, just have to be born in the best country in the WORLD. Living the dream

My father passed away from Lung Cancer on Memorial day 2021. Went from 6 months to a week after diagnosed, it's definitely one of the hardest situations any family could go through. Personally, what helped with coping after was realizing that it takes a lot of time to heal from a loved one passing of lung cancer. Dont be afraid to ask for help also from a therapist, friend or even a neighbor. For 2 years I avoided the trauma and it only got worse from there, you're never in this alone!

I appreciate the words of caution about getting medical advice via the internet. So true. But I think a fair number of us are following up the brief talks we’ve had with our doctors. For me, my nodule and granulomas were found unexpectedly while being screened for surgery clearance. Now I’m being scheduled for a PET scan and that has me worried. None of the symptoms you mention, but I am in my seventies, so maybe my age is the reason for the PET scan.

Hello. I am not a doctor but If I have cancer I want you to know that taking your body back to its alkaline state can help u severely. It can minimize growth of cancer cells radically and even reverse it! How to make ur body alkaline? Stop eating cooked food totally
Eat only raw organic food especially greens.
It may sound weird but pls listen.
The human body is made to be alkaline, once u put food on fire it becomes acidic!
A baby on breast milk has an alkaline body which is very hard for any dis ease to thrive in.
I believe if u do the following it will help you more than any medicine. Pls do ur research.
1 cut out sugar and salt totally for now
2 eat only vegetables and fruitsAfter a month u can start eating salmon over the weekends only .
3 get enough sunlight as sunlight heals
4speak positivity and healing into your good and water before u consume
5if you are on meds fine continue but make sure YOU CHANGE ALL YOU EAT INSTANTKY ESPECIALLY EATING ONLY RAW ORGANIC FOOD🙏🏽
Declutter ur space and avoid any negativity

I had acute pain at my upper back often if I started coughing.. Sometimes it would be on chest. Like u ..pain was so bad I was so distressed and helpless. I tried rubbing the area with tiger balm white ointment daily or put a KefenTech Plaster (manufactured in Korea) over it. The plaster was good to relieve pain, given to me by a doctor of hospital for my other health tissues then. I could get them from pharamcies too. Hope u perhaps might try to see if it helped. It would take few days to stop the pain though. Had a good blessed week ahead!

  • @FeHopeCyndiW

Thanks for the sensible video. What are your thoughts on the current guidelines for follow-up for nodules? At least here in the US, they don't seem to follow up. My doctor recommended that I see a pulmonologist when multiple lung nodules were found incidentally on my CT (was there for chest pain). I saw the pulmonologist and he said that they were small (4 mm), so there was no need to follow up with current guidelines. (Not even another CT in a year.) I never smoked, but I did nerve agent detection defense work for the USG as a chemist; I have been around carcinogens. Being a scientist, I looked up the stats and I am not sure if I am comfortable with that, particularly given the upper lobe location. My husband died from fibrolamellar cancer, which is ultra rare, so our young daughter only has one parent left. It has definitely made me more conscious of my health.(I am an Ironman-distance triathlete, but I learned long ago that health and fitness are not the same!) I am wondering if not following up is really in the best interest of the patients or the insurance companies dictating medicine in the US. I have smoked heavy for 48 years. Last year they found spots I get colds 2-4 times year. He suspected lung cancer. He was so certain I had the tests and Pneumonia eventually cleared up. They did a CT assistant biopsy one and I never went back. I figured they were wrong. I do have problems coughing and use several symptoms but I was tested and they weren’t concerned so I guess I’m one of the lucky ones so far.

My mother smoked around me for 20 years until I went on and smoke myself. I quit at 47. I've had RAI twice in my teens. I had thyroid cancer and recently skin cancer. The thyroid cancer had spread to one of my right laryngeal nerves so there are a few complications. I have some pulmonary aspiration at times. I can't breathe as good as I used to. I've had RAI twice in my teens. My husband has had thyroid cancer as well. Why is it like I'm asking too much from my primary physician. She gave me an Rx for an inhaler and said that I would have to see a Pulmonologist if it doesn't help. She said it's probably just long Covid. I did not cough or sneeze. I had a mild case? Why is it that if anyone asked for my advice in my situation, I would tell them to see a doctor and get a scan. Demand one. What's the worst that could happen you already or don't already have lung cancer. Excuse me while I request an appointment.

Theres quite a bit going on in my right lung ...but that area is really quite painful at times. Waiting to see pulmonologist. Because I have quit a bit of ggo with nodules mostly centilobulor and they have grown a lil with quite a bit of consolidation in the upper lobe a cavitation vs an air bronchogram connected to the centilobulor ggo's and right hilar nodular consolidation...mostly just loosing weight and some shortness of breath whit regular activity...fingers crossed

Having been a smoker about 2-3 months ago i developed a heavy cough and i couldn't know what I've had so i mannaged to get some strong cough mixture but i also had pain on my chest and for some reason the pain wasn't there for long but due to the coughing it was like a cold cough so I've concluded that all in all that I've had a cold on my chest and that's where my pain in the chest come from and eventually the coughing finished and then i was ok. So with a chest pain it's not necessary a singh of lung cancer but could be a cold on the chest.😊

I can understand why our age range did because it was so common in the 1970's and 80s. Go see a doctor get it checked out tell them you want a CT scan of the lungs. My best friend a long-term smoker had a bad heart attack in 2019 left him with 20-30% of his heart at age 67. He continued to smoke went downhill fast. Good luck

I've had a really bad cough since before christmas ( bit over 2 months at this point) and it just doesn't go away. Had a lung x-ray today, got my results back on the same day; Shadows and spots. Friday afternoon my GP isn't open anymore so i'm going to have to wait til Monday (got an appointment in the morning) to hear *anything* from an actual doctor. In the meantime i've been googling and youtubing my results and to my layman's eyes it looks like i'm either lucking out with a pneumonia - or a tumor. (Well, "growth", benign or evil.) Normally i'd chalk my rather unpleasant thoughts up to being a pessimist... but in Jannuary i spent ten days in a hospital for a bodywide infection caused by a gal bladder stone and i was pumped full of antibiotics several times each day. Cough didn't change.
    Meanwhile
    Grandfather: died of cancer
    Great Aunt: died of cancer
Other Great Aunt: currently dieing from cancer
    Great Uncle: died of cancer
    Mother: died of cancer
Grandmother: unsure about this one but i seem to recall either cancer or a heart attack.
Point is: imma gonna have a *real* shit weekend. Oddly enough my main thought is: if it IS lung cancer an entire hospital would have missed it for ten days despite me coughing up a storm louder than the Covid Rooms next door without it getting any better. Like, the cough isn't new, if this is something bad *surely* my bloodwork would've shown something right? Right. Gonna pretend it's gonna be just an infection and go from there if i'm told otherwise. Just. MAN. Shit like that. ALWAYS on the weekend.
...and i don't really want to talk about it to anyone before i know what's up. And yet i need to vent. 2024 starts like it's trying to kill me off for good which i'm not even terribly against but ffs can't we just have me fall over quick and painless :/

@@destiny9705 sort of, it was a lung infection, rather a clingy one at that; i am *still* coughing out the rest of it. And the appointment with the lung doctor returned a potential case of Asthma which we're looking at now which is... not amazing but fuck it, it's not cancer, i'll take it

I am not a doctor, but am a never smoker with lung cancer. I just thought I would add a few extra comments, which may be of benefit to readers.
Whilst (at least in the UK) around 80% - 85% of lung cancers are believed to have been caused by smoking, the other 15% - 20% of lung cancers occur in people often with no or a light smoking history. Many of those lung cancers are a result of a gene mutation. In the UK, the most common of these are EGFR and ALK, although there are many rarer ones, such as ROS1 and RET fusion. There are no known causes, although recent research has implicated PM2.5 pollution with increased rates of EGFR.
People with these gene mutations often present at a much younger age than smoking-related lung cancers. The majority of us for ALK are in our 40s and 50s. It gets a bit rarer in people in their 30s and 60s and even rarer in 20s and 70s. It is extremely rare in children / teenagers and people over 80, with the median age at diagnosis for EGFR being a little older, at about 65. The majority (something like 60%) are female. Any ethnicity can be affected, although there is some evidence of increased prevalence in people of Far Eastern ethnicities.
Symptoms mirror those for smoking lung cancers - such as a cough that remains for several weeks, breathlessness, coughing up blood and weight loss. However, there is some evidence that non-smoking lung cancers have increased rates of shoulder, scapula or back pain being the presenting symptom.
Since many of us are fit and healthy for our age, sadly, the cancer has often spread extensively around the body at the time of diagnosis (i.e. the final cancer stage 4B). A chest X-ray will quite often not detect the lung cancer, as was the case for me.
Whilst non-smoking lung cancers are incredibly rare, it is important not to assume that they cannot happen and get yourself checked out, if you feel that something is not right. It is far better to get diagnosed sooner rather than later.
If you are unlucky enough to have EGFR, ALK, ROS1 or several other types of non-smoking lung cancers, there are now very effective targeted therapy treatments, which provide a virtually normal quality of life, often for several years. Research is ongoing to turn these into chronic conditions.

In 1982 I spray painted military vehicles with paint that contained hexavalent chromium. This occurred 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, over a period of several weeks. I did not use a respirator, so a lot of the aerosolized paint entered my nose. I had to frequently blow the paint out of my nose while painting and to wash it out every night, so I’m sure some of it made it into my respiratory system and lungs. I’ve had a persistent cough for the past few years, so last year I told my doctor about the cough and exposure. She ordered a chest CT scan and it showed two lung nodules (3mm and 8mm) and that I have collapsed lower lungs (bibasilar atelectasis). I go for a 1-year follow up CT scan in Nov. 2023. I also smoked from the ages of 17-29. I’m 63 now. I haven’t been able to find anyone with a similar experience and condition as mine, as I’d like to hear about it.

Is there a way to test if you have these genes before you have cancer?

    • @shaunh5316
      @shaunh5316 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@martinlutherkingjr.5582 No, since it is not known to be caused by inherited genes from your parents. It starts when one of your existing lung cells mutates in a particular way. How long it takes from that first mutation to being diagnosed with lung cancer is not known, but it probably takes several years.
