  • At first, Gina Hollenbeck was told that her chronic cough was due to seasonal allergies, then a second doctor chalked it up to gastric reflux. It was a chest X-ray she insisted on paying for out of pocket that led to her terminal cancer diagnosis.

I continued to go to Dr because of persistent cough. Was told i needed mental health because it was just chronic bronchitis. Eventually i threw a tantrum. They threatened me with police. To complait me they sent me for x-rays. Next call i got was from pulmonary specialist. Prognosis is stage 4 lung cancer. Been so blessed my insurance pays for everything. They gave me 18months. I'm on immunotherapy. Life extended 3years so far. Hasn't spread. I know I'm on borrowed time but God and life is good. When you feel it in your gut something is wrong don't let anyone try to make you feel/sound mental. Some doctors disregard/dismiss when a woman tells THEM something isn't quite right with their bodies. God is good and always have the last word. Blessings to all!!!

So sad that patients have to throw a tantrum to get proper testing done.
Another effective tactic - if a doctor refuses to give you a test ask them to note their refusal in your chart. the word "malpractice" never needs to be said but a savvy doctor will understand what is going on.

Yep! Years of misdiagnosis. After many er visits, one doctor told me I had a pulled muscle on a Friday. On Sunday I was called back to the er. Stage 4 NET tumors. Carcinoid cancer diagnosis, along with carcinoid syndrome. 80 cm of intestines removed. It had metastasized. Last year had a parotid removed. They did an CAT scan on me in March after a heart attack and stroke, they told my wife I was probably going to be a vegetable for the rest of my life if I lived. They discharged me after 8 days and I'm home now, about 90% of what I was before, not a 100% but if you didn't know I had those issues, you wouldn't know it by talking to me today. Moral of the story? Get second opinions, and have hope, my wife was planning funeral in March, and now we're back to being better than we were before. Don't take life for granted, it can be gone in an instant.

My non smoking mom died from lung cancer that had been diagnosed as emphysema. I thought it was odd that a non smoker had emphysema. By the time someone noticed how sick she was it was too late. Drs gave her 6 months, she died in 4. My mom was under a Drs care and had been going for regular monthly visits for more than a decade (various issues such as hypothyroid, kidney problems and high cholesterol caused by genetics and not diet). Not once did the Dr look at her lungs.
My mom believed Drs were authority figures who should not be second-guessed. I had always said "Drs are people, not gods".

When I found this out, I switched doctors. His partner then told me my cough was allergies. I got fuming angry. I was going to either report them or drop them. He noticed that I meant business. Every month.for 3-4 months I went to the doctor and she would prescribe me a different medicine. The 5th and 6th month she insisted it was just allergies. No testing was done. By this time I was desperate because of how bad this cough was affecting my sanity and general well-being so I made an appointment with a pulmonologist, which took another 2 months to get in. A trip to the er confirmed her leg bome was eaten through via cancer. The docs totally missed the big picture in spite of positive family and personnel history.

Oh my Lord that makes me so angry for you and your wife. What is wrong with these drs?
They treat you like dirt. I swear I have lost so much faith in the medical community. I have a bladder diasese since childhood and ulcerative colitis plus survived 3 major car wrecks.i suffered so bad with that diasese as a kid and young teen with hideous painful treatments And I have endometriosis. Now they put you to sleep. I have had 2 wonderful drs but this rest I can't say anything real nice about.
I have had a persistent painful infection for about a year now,. been treated crap at ER because I went into anaphalaxsis 5 times in a few months times from drug allergies and even had a attack right in my allergists that sent me to ER on what felt like cardiac arrest when it felt like a sledgehammer hit my chest.i still am having serious issues with that which is so scary.
And my wonderful pain doc that gave me ketamine a freaking miracle drug has died so I am suffering with hideous pain. Can't get it because of these greedy clinics that want 900 bucks a treatment when he had it somehow covered for me. Is ts a cheap drug too so it's disgraceful they are making money off suffering people.
My state also won't pass the kind of medical marijuana that helps chronic pain either so these vultures can make money on lesser effective type that is not using the whole flower. It's just been crazy and then my GP says oh by the way you have a fracture in your back and I'm like what?
Only thing I can figure is in the Er I had a muscle spasm and ejected from the table and I already had herniated l 4 l 5 discs.
I have knee injuries mainly because some quack gave me medicine that caused my blood pressure to drop to the floor and so I kept passing out. Hearing about your wife is scary because my pain had increased and all they told me to do for the fracture is just take that medical marijuana that is not really effective.
I spend so much money out of pocket for docs that won't take insurance. The marijuana doc wont and the marijuana is not covered and is expensive. Neither will the pain doc. He's nice but not as good or experienced like my brilliant doc I had before that died and was also a cancer doc.
That man was a true healer. As was my old urologist who was from italy and extremely compassionate. I'm so sorry for you and your wife and I hate to say this but I sure hope you talk to a lawyer. Unfortunately they may learn if you do that, not to treat the next patient that way. It may seem like you don't want to do that but in reality you may save someone from suffering. God bless you both.

You are the captain of your life. You decide where you will go and you know better than anyone, when something is wrong. I was sick for years, with doctors saying it was in all in my head...until I told one doctor (a specialist) I couldn’t continue to live as I was. Then he “happened” to figure out what was wrong. This was several doctor’s later, with one referring me to the specialist for the tentative diagnosis for the reason that actually was causing me to be so sick. It took nearly 10 years with progressively worsening symptoms.

I worked for West Virginia University surgery and Trauma services when my maternal uncle was diagnosed with esophageal cancer.
My dad said that he thought he might also have it because he was having the same symptoms. At that time esophageal cancer was quite rare so I thought it was probably a motility problem and scheduled my dad for tests.
I went in when they did the upper endoscopy and couldn't believe how large the tumor was.
The oncologist gave my dad 6 months and was very pessimistic.
So I called the doctor and had a talk with him, explaining that if he couldn't be positive then he was not to say anything at all, we were paying him not the other way around, and that he should be positive even if he couldn't cure my dad.
My dad lived 3 years beyond what they thought and I think it was because of being positive.

The thing with my mom was, all my uncles were smokers too, and none got cancer nor their wifes. My mom however always had one of those humidifier on her night stand beside her, the stuff they put into those things have never been regulated or controlled. I then coughed daily for nearly six years and lost my sense of taste and smell to this day, aside from the stench inside my head that I taste, smell and breathe every day and night. I saw an ENT, had my bronchiole explored, had a CT scan on my head and chest X-rays. To no avail, NOTHING. Although, in 2018, my cough seemed to have dissipated to a weekly thing and an occasional pain in my chest, all my doctors said there’s nothing left to do. And this is when it got worse but before that fot 15 years i was telling them that it hurts on menstruations too too much and they were saying that this is normal. How do you define normal? If someone comes to you it is already not normal, it means we are in pain, discomfort. So i had endometriosis for 20 years and i was dismissed. We would stay at home if it was "normal".I got a surgery and i got disgnosed with endometriosis and that is it. Tried so many meds and hormonal treatments and that is it. I still live in pain, sometimed bed-bounded and doctors say we did everything we could😒 i have a chance to travel for specialists but i have no money. So yes, i can barely doctors now.

Gina, you’re amazing and I am glad that you found a doctor who was on your side and willing to listen to you and go on the hunt to figure out what was actually wrong to get an accurate diagnosis and treatments that actually work for you and your body. I know all to well what it’s like to have doctors who don’t listen, cannot seem to connect the dots between the symptoms and the illness . If I hadn’t stood up for myself I wouldn’t be alive today and I wouldn’t have had my miracle Rainbow baby girl. I was also diagnosed with allergies and sent to an allergist who with a simple CBC test and a urinalysis discovered that I had extremely high blood sugar levels and was spilling large amounts of ketones. He said to have my doctor run a hemoglobin A1C to check my blood sugar levels for the last 3 months. When I called she refused and said that she would wait for his report. I had to demand that she do it. I would have gone into a diabetic coma if I had listened to her. While pregnant with my daughter I started having trouble walking and standing and was told it was normal and would go away after giving birth. It didn’t go away and it progressively got worse each year. We had moved to a different state and it was difficult to find a decent doctor in the rural area that became home. The doctor was pretty good for a few years, but I rarely saw him. I usually saw his assistant who was amazing. Things started going down hill and we noticed that the staff kept changing. The assistant was never around anymore. I had gotten an MRI done back in early 2003 and was told that I had 3 bulging disks in my neck and lumbar regions, but they were not severe enough to do anything about them. After that he stopped listening to me whenever I brought up my symptoms. After lots of research I knew that I had lumbar stenosis because the description matched all of my symptoms. Because my doctor wouldn’t help I started going to a chiropractor who helped some, but he also made it a lot worse. I thought it was strange that he never showed me the X-rays he had done. The last time I went to him I had a herniated disk in my neck and was in excruciating pain. Instead of contacting my doctor who is his best friend about getting me referred to a Neurosurgeon he decided that he could fix it if I worked with him. I finally had enough after my former doctor told me that it was all in my head and I just needed to lose weight and exercise more. I demanded that he order an MRI which he fought me on saying that the insurance wouldn’t pay for it. It took a month to get it done, but it saved my life. My spinal cord was being crushed in between my vertebrae in 4 places in my cervical spine. He didn’t tell me, instead he had a staff member call me about the appointment I had in a few days with a Neurosurgeon. I actually had to ask her what the MRI had shown. The new MRI information was forwarded to the Neurosurgeon who didn’t expect me to be able to stand up let alone walk or function at the level I was based on the location and amount of damage shown in the MRI. His assistant had done the neurological exam and had gone to report to him and he literally came in barely a minute after she left to do the exam over for himself. Apparently the car accident I had been in 20 years prior had caused multiple spinal cord injuries that had gone undiagnosed and misdiagnosed for 20 years. After the first surgery he told my husband and I that the damage had been even worse than what was seen in the MRI and that I had been one wrong move away from death or becoming a quadriplegic on a respirator for the rest of my life . I found a new doctor, well actually I found the former assistant who has become my doctor.

Typical. Doctors have no clue do they? Not funny. How many brain cells does your doctors need to do a $75 X-ray when you have persistent cough. Sorry I had the same thing with treating me for 6 months for the wrong thing, I too have cancer.

This gives me some much needed hope. I was just diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer w/ ROS1 mutation. Just waiting on approval from insurance - was denied first attempt

They told my husband he had allergies. He did not get better and went back a week later after he started gurgling. They told him allergies again and he asked the doctor for an xray. before he got home with his allergy prescriptions, the doctor was on the phone to him to go to the nearest er. He had a pneumothorax and it was pressing against his heart. You are your own best advocate
