BrokenBear Absolutely false, unless you have some form of inherited/genetic insomnia. Our ancestors would rise and sleep very close to when the sun rose and fell. In fact, Thomas Edison even said that lightbulbs caused people to sleep later. Most modern cases of insomnia are not caused by genetics, but by their lifestyle. I can attest to this, cuz I’m bored and I’m writing this at 12:56 a.m....

Did he actually say no caffeine 8 hours before bed or is that your addition? I didn't hear him say it in the video, maybe I missed it.
Asking since this is a question i've been wondering about - how long does caffeine affects us for (and so how long before bed to stop it)?
The studies i've seen say it affects us for at least 13-14 hours, so am surprised that you wrote here only 8 hours. Is this what he said in the video?

When I used to work from 9 to 7, or 9 to 9 a couple of days a week, which was in the period right after getting my Bachelor's and going into grad school, I used to come home and sleep like a baby. Back in my undergrad days and my current grad days, I work from 8/9 to 9 and it takes me so much to sleep. All throughout my adult life, I would drink two coffees per day. In my job days, I'd fall asleep watching TV or youtube on my phone. Over the past two Christmas vacations, my sleeping went back to normal.
Conclusion from personal experience: the type of work you do affects the amount of sleep and the time it takes you to fall asleep.

It's a pretty interesting experience - You get in and you're concentrating and breathing really intensely to make sure you don't freeze (super alert), then you get out and you're hopping all over the place as you put your towel on, but then when you lay down it's like your bed is made out of tranquilizer darts

I loved the part about the positive effects of reading a *real* book over the negative effects of staring at a screen or reading from a Kindle or tablet. I am constantly imploring my husband to get rid of his cell phone in the bed. (He now hides it when he sees me enter the bedroom.....) So I have ammunition for him to discontinue this harmful habit! I also perked up at the part about the benefit of early morning sun. When I can make myself get outside very early to water the garden or nursery, I notice a general feeling of well being throughout the day. This video explains why. Cool! Like saundra venexam and Richard Rice, I would like to know more about that yoga pose to loosen up the spine. Finally I loved the Power Ranger part. LOL. And those cats were pretty awesome too. Keep up the good work, Japanese Man!

It's quite surprising how drastic the effects are, right? I have a software on my computer called f.lux which blocks some of the blue light coming from the screen, and if I turn it off even momentarily I can actually feel myself waking up (or getting some sort of stimulation from the screen.)
Maybe he could get some blue light blocking glasses or at least download a blue light blocking app to his iPhone?
By the way, the normal kindle is just fine for your eyes before bed as it has an e-ink screen. The kindle fire however, has a normal blue light emitting screen, so you'd want to avoid using that in bed.
Awesome! I wish I had a garden here in Tokyo, that sounds like the perfect way to start the day.

Regarding claims made at 3:00 about the most restful hours of sleep. Studies have found that night-shift workers (wonky sleep schedule) in total during a day secrete the same amount of growth hormone, melatonin etc. Their circadian rhythms were just shifted.
Interestingly, the peaks of growth hormone secretion during sleep were lower in the shift workers compared to the peak secretion during sleep of the control group. The shifted circadian rhythm group spontaneously secreted growth hormone during the day to make up for the lower peak secretion during sleep. These claims have been replicated. The info is easily discoverable online.
So the claim that you might not feel rested if you miss the extra "restful" hours of sleep probably isn't true for most people who sleep well otherwise, just at different times. Love your channel so much I felt like I had to chime in with something constructive.

Pretty much the same routine, just with a day-wake alarm and some hella powerful blackout curtains and general lightproofing in your bedroom. Establish a circadian rhythm more suited to your lifestyle. Whatever sleep pattern you're on, sunlight is the ultimate WAKE UP trigger in our brain, so of course it's more difficult for night shift workers and important for them to avoid sunlight, like vampires, which are also cursed, like you. :(

I thought before that night shift workers should just learn to make the day night and vice versa but I'm in night shift now and its a lot harder than that. The most challenging part for me is the weekends because I have to adapt my schedule to normal people esp when having plans with friends etc. It ruins my sleep routine that I have to build back up again come the weekdays but ruined again the next weekends.
