same :( I'd really recommed for you or anyone who reads this to spend time in nature. If theres a ravine, park, green area, water, open sky- anything natural, just take a walk for 20 minutes, first thing as you wake up, or whenever you can. If you do this as the sun comes up, even better. I did this for some time and the peace, joy and happiness the simple walk, breathing in, and out, and looking around, taking in the beauty of the world, all of it, it made me feel alive. Whole. I really, really recommend for anyone to try this. I hope everyone has a wonderful day. Remember to take care of yourselves :)
The human brain can only truly focus on one thing at a time. Someone may think they are multi-tasking, but something has to suffer. Either everything suffers but the one thing you are really concentrating on, or they all suffer and you don't get anything accomplished!
My mom has said how dizzy she gets watching me switch tab to tab. Sometimes I'm between 10 or more. Yet she can only focus on one. But outside of the internet, the roles of reversed; I have to focus on just one thing, all my attention and hard work goes into that. Where as my mom, she can multitask and gets upset if I'm not quick as her or I'm too busy with one task to pay attention to another.
TheEternityForce honestly I don't believe this video. I'm on the internet a LOT, and yet I can focus whenever I want to, in real life OR on the internet
Good stuff! People need to talk more about the internet and the effects that recent technologies have on us. We haven't had enough time to develop an etiquette for these new-found behaviors, but I think this is changing.
I really apreciate this video, hope to see everyone so we hopefully change our lifestyle. I think is one of the few times where I take something serious in this world full of entertaiment where you have to joke about it to make the people listen to you.
Thank You very much for your thorough research. I do feel like an addict! Strange thing is I don't really miss it when for some reason I don't have access to it for longer periods of time.
Its not just enhanced distractability, it also rewards immediate gratification. Not only do I see people have a lack of focus, but an aversion to being patient or diligently improving over time. Even reading, which I greatly enjoy, is something I suffer to convince people to engage in. Mention its in a book and suddenly you see them abandon looking into a thing they were otherwise psyched about, like a cool fantasy story. With emails or notes, some people seem incapable of reading anything beyond the first 3 lines, as a result they make mistakes I explicitly warn them about in the message. Its very frustrating, people need to learn to center themselves.
This is why I have cut down on my use of the internet. I remember going to a formal dinner at University of Cambridge recently and before we were allowed to enter the dining hall - we all had to turn off our phones. It felt GOOD to be disconnected from technology and just engage in conversations with people around us in reality. I'm about to reach 2 months of NoFap and don't feel the need to go back to that lifestyle again. I haven't reach the hardest part of quitting it altogether yet, which is to delete the library.
thank you man....you made my day with this video. I was wondering why I can't focus now a days comparing few years back when I used to just listen to someone and remember everything. Even in college days I never read books except exam time and scored very nice. But now I have to read same book multiple times and still find lost and cannot remember what I read. Thanks to give me action item to avoid smart phone and internet and focus on things in old ways. THANK YOU MAN...THANKS A LOT
I absolutely cannot stand to not learn something, while on the net. Sites like FB etc make me feel horrible, because it reminds me of how naive my culture is. I avoid them as I avoid the news.
I feel ya. I cannot understand the appeal of Cable TV. I haven't owned a TV in over 15yrs. When I actually did have a subscription to Cable TV...They didn't have so much commercials as they do now. I hate commercials...especially paying for it!
This was just wanted I needed, I'm an Msc student and was wondering why I was struggling to focus. Even when I wanted to complete a task. This was an eye-opener.
you need to come to terms with the fact that "being entertained" shouldn't be your main goal in life. accomplishing things in the long run will feel SO much better than the rush of a temporary high. think of what you value most in life and what you want to achieve. remind yourself of your long-term goals whenever you feel yourself falling into a distraction trap.

I've been watching informational videos for several months, all on very weighty topics. But this has the greatest practical significance of them all. What may have taken a week to understand you've managed to compress into 10 minutes. Excellent video. Keep up the great work.
I'm so glad that you ended the video with another Limitless clip, half way through the video I decided I wanted to look up where I can watch it but was trying hard to not let myself wander from watching this first lol.
Thanks for this my man. I've been diagnosed with ADHD all my life and while I don't doubt my diagnosis, for the past few years Its been harder and harder to maintain my grades, probably because I've not been mindful about how I use the internet for escapism. Your tip in another video about how being mindful of "the call of twitter" as I call it has actually been really helpful, and its really helped me not just resign myself to not understanding how my brain works, and it gives me a method of control.

Great work on the internet adiction analysis. I've found that just checking my cellphone every now and then afects deeply my capacity to concentrate. Keep the good work. Watching from Medellín, Colombia.
This channel is absolutely amazing, I already realised how much I used the internet is bad for me, but this video really gave me a big punch and I think a lot of people could use that. And I really wish I wouldn't be this addicted to the internet, so I could have a good paying job, so I could subscribe on your patroen! You deserve it!! I hope these videos/information gets more attention, because I can't imagine how many lives were unconsciously ruined because of the internet, just like my own
So does that mean most people have ADD? It always thought I have short attention span, but it turns it could just be the way modern technology is shaping us out to be.
@@default2826 Is it possible for a growing baby's brain to adapt to an ADD like brain if watching high paced, colorful videos like ChuChu Tv all the time?
How would you reverse these effects? Is it as simple as going cold turkey and focusing on long term objectives? A follow up would be helpful. The effects you mention are very noticeable in me because of my recent circumstance. I'm near enough an isolated test subject. I cooked every meal, worked out with a regime I researched and read books regularly. After 6 months with an illness being bed ridden, I used my phone more than ever consuming shallow distraction media. Now I'm free to go outside again it feels like I've developed ADHD, I have seriously low willpower and focusing on a book or a task that takes more than 5 minutes has me craving to open IG, Twitter or Sport articles to scroll through. In this short time I've had a concentrated change in daily life. It is genuinely noticeable.
Try reading scientific PDFs on the internet. Force yourself to stick through it the entire way through and don't let anything except for an emergency interrupt you. That way you can use the internet to enhance your focus. It's all about how you choose to use it.
I'd say don't push it and allow yourself to gradually get better at browsing/scrolling/reacting less, 1 day at a time. You said you've been consuming distraction content for 6 months - you might need to give yourself time to reverse it fully. From a pure practical standpoint - I really go hard on my mobile notifications: badges only (no sound, no push notifications) for email; mute + no app badges for group chats; and in general I disable notifications for apps rather quickly. For example Shazam and Linkedin are completely 'off' on my phone - while I don't even remember (or care) what Shazam has annoyed me with, my Linkedin is configured to send me a weekly email with all the messages & new connections that I've received. Don't ever look at "Recommened for you", "Others also liked" and "Watch this next" sections on ANY website - that's a dopamine bait. Use "Add to watch later" button on TH-cam, instead of watching the video straight away, and then make your "Watch Later" playlist your TH-cam bookmark, instead of their home.
wow this was spot on, i remember a time when i would constantly be on my phone switching apps and spending countless hours on shot like facebook and insta now ive cut down to learning apps, stategy games and youtube, plus i watched this whole video without a single distraction:D
I can't really tell if this is all any better but i can't really look at memes anymore because recently I've been on somn called, semen retention. I have became really hostile, irritated, and stoic. Best way to describe it. When I look at a meme now, theyre all predictable. They're just. Not funny. So now all I usually find on the internet is different perspectives to at least feel something.
Hey man another great vid. The issues that you are talking about are really great and I recommend them to all my friends. I am actually struggling with this issue of lack of focus and internet addiction. I try to avoid it and focus myself to my work but every now and then it ends up to a periods of completely wasting my time on internet or watching videos. It is really bad and sometimes caused serious consequences. I really want to stop it.
This is by far the most valuable channel. The day when i watch this channel, i definitely do exercise, yoga, meditation and also minimum sugar consumption.

Great video, vocalised a lot of things I've been mulling over myself in a much more articulate way than I would. This is turning out to be one of my favourite youtube channels, your videos are great and very unique, thanks!
Great video as always. Could you do one on nicotine (the substance itself, and perhaps about added chemicals in cigarettes) and its mental / physical effects?
Same here. I've heard that it is a nootropic (improves cognitive function), but I'm not sure of the cognitive effects it has in long term use... this video got me thinking that the fact that it is external stimulus, and that it incites craving and varying withdrawal when without, cancels out or even takes away from its supposed mental focus.. The man does his research and tells it concisely, and I'd like to hear from him
Probably works for some people and not for others. I've never tried it. If I need to focus I use Brain.fm. Their focus music works for me (possibly a placebo). Their relaxtion and sleep songs don't really have an effect (probably because I don't have trouble relaxing or sleeping).
I have never found nicotine to help me focus. If it has been a while since I left smoked, I can literally feel the bags begin to form under my eyes and my brain start to feel 'swampy' and lethargic. When I quit smoking I would get this strange sensation of something seeping from my brain and while it did not cause me to feel dizzy or faint it still felt like my brain was having something drain from it. Almost like the opposite to the 'high' feeling one gets when they first start. I don't know how to explain it. I also found that I remembered my dreams better and that they were more vivid.
so basically, you should but your phone on silent or airplane mode during times when you need 100% focus to store the learned information in long term memory.. Makes total sense and I find it works very well when I apply that.. make your "breaks" from learning/working/studying/focus, when you check your social media or chat with friends < 10 minutes
This is going to be a petty comment, very petty... ahem... Okay, okay, okay, first I'm really happy about this video cause I have a big problem with that and this really gives me hope, looking forward to you depicting the topic even more, great, great and now... THEY DON'T GET IT. People around me don't get it. They think it's oh so easy. It looks like simple selfishness and lazyness to them. It's my fault. I got myself to this situation. It was years in the making. But this problem - the problem in it of itself bugs me the most, of course, but it also bugs me how people don't get it, how pathetic it seems to them, when it's an actual problem. It's really one of the several pathetic, looking like easy problems with easy solutions on the outside problems that I have that hinder my studies. And they're ALL my fault and my responsibility. But it bugs me how people don't get it and don't respect the fact that people go through different things and most of all percieve them differently. For my close ones to think that I _just don't do anything_ to fix things it's... bugging me. And it's petty, super petty, but I just wanted to let it out somewhere. But they love me so freakin' much and they do a lot for me so is all good. ❤️ I'm good. More than good.
I try not to endlessly scroll on FB, Insta, twitter, reddit etc. I'll check my notifications a couple times a day, but anything more than that is mentally demanding/draining and makes me feel gross. Instead I listen to a lot of music and distract myself (still in a somewhat negative way) by finding new music. At least finding good music feels more meaningful than passively scrolling for hours. Great video as always!
This Channel has not only given me the motivation to examine and change the negative habitual behaviour in my life, it has also explained to me why I have those behaviours. Without a doubt the best discovery I've made in years. Thanks man
Soooooo.... prohibition on the internet! Or.... Legalize cocaine! xD (I love the way you break things down and explain these interesting subjects, keep up the good work!) Edit: punctuation
ADD and ADHD is something your born with. It's there since your entire life and you can't just get it by out side factors. Outside factors can make your symptoms worse but they won't give it to you. It's just a chemical imbalance in the brain that causes people to think differently. It doesn't affect intelligence either.
I am very grateful that I found your channel. I remmember watching one of your videos a while ago but not paying much attention😅 but I did keep the video in the watch later list. You can tell the amount of work, reserch and information that you pour beautifully for us. So i think that once the spectator is aware if this, it's a must to pay attention. Thanks.
Tony James Gilpin I'm curious about this so I'd love to know a little more! - To clarify your attention span, can you work on projects like typing or reading for 1-2 hours without distractions like checking your phone or social media? - Do you regularly use a smartphone during your day? - I'm assuming you use some forms of social media regularly because you're commenting on TH-cam. - how old were you in 2005? - do you have a family history of addiction? - how much time on average do you spend on the internet a day? You might be on to something about your age being a factor!
"- To clarify your attention span, can you work on projects like typing or reading for 1-2 hours without distractions like checking your phone or social media?" Yes. I can focus on projects I like for even longer! "- Do you regularly use a smartphone during your day?" Nope! I have a smartphone, but it quit working... I never used it much, anyway! I can do everything, that I need to, on a laptop! "- I'm assuming you use some forms of social media regularly because you're commenting on TH-cam. " I check Facebook about once a day, sometimes not even that frequently... I mostly use TH-cam to learn about things, and make stupid comments! "- how old were you in 2005?" 19 "- do you have a family history of addiction?" My dad was a smoker! My mom was a drinker, but she stopped! I'm an internet addict! "- how much time on average do you spend on the internet a day?" Pretty much from after waking up until passing out at night! Unless something more important comes to my attention! :D
We started using the internet at about the same age and frequency. But I have a predisposition to addictive behaviors. I check social media FAR more frequently (at least once an hour), half because of my job and half out of habit. I don't think it's age related in your case, probably part behavioral and part genetic? Interesting experiment! Thanks for playing along!
Many videos speak excessively slowly for the sake of clarity. It decreases the overall watchability. If you notice the clip at the end where the other guy talks, it is the people typically talk at and is far more engaging

same :( I'd really recommed for you or anyone who reads this to spend time in nature.
@@zain4019 So true! I recommend visualization to replace your internet. It's just as fun and motivating.
The funny thing is i watched this video while i was doing other things. I might have to watch it again because i didn´t get the point
Joniwus, that happens with me all the time!
yeah, i didn't understand the cube analogy.
The human brain can only truly focus on one thing at a time. Someone may think they are multi-tasking, but something has to suffer. Either everything suffers but the one thing you are really concentrating on, or they all suffer and you don't get anything accomplished!
@@MrG0yb0t the cube is like a recipe to make a new thing, each combination learned is a new object or skill
Then what's funny?
My mom has said how dizzy she gets watching me switch tab to tab. Sometimes I'm between 10 or more. Yet she can only focus on one. But outside of the internet, the roles of reversed; I have to focus on just one thing, all my attention and hard work goes into that. Where as my mom, she can multitask and gets upset if I'm not quick as her or I'm too busy with one task to pay attention to another.
TheEternityForce honestly I don't believe this video. I'm on the internet a LOT, and yet I can focus whenever I want to, in real life OR on the internet
You're making my life better.
Good stuff! People need to talk more about the internet and the effects that recent technologies have on us. We haven't had enough time to develop an etiquette for these new-found behaviors, but I think this is changing.
This is one of the best video essays I've come across on youtube.
You have a talent dear, your gentle discourses present complex information with such coherency and neatness, its almost magical.
Now this is a value packed REAL self improvement video. Thank you for all you do man! We all appreciate your amazing quality videos
But the sudden, stupid impulse is still there even amidst important things
+DudeMBR +McDoodle44 It's like wanting chocolate, and then you eat a banana. Just with devices, versus other (and healthier) dopamine-creating stuff.
Watching right now! Your videos are always generous in information. Keep it up! and thank you! :)

So now it's been 2 years, have you been succesfull doing nofap for those years?
thank you man....you made my day with this video.
I love when stuff like this is published on THE INTERNET
The channel that just keeps on giving. Thankyou

Thank you for making this channel and these videos. It is seriously needed.
Soooooo, how do I reverse this to become a better thinker?
Great question, was thinking the same.
resist your instant gratifications, meditate daily, work more on the things you want to do
How? Easy to say hard to do...
Just remember that less is more.
you need to come to terms with the fact that "being entertained" shouldn't be your main goal in life. accomplishing things in the long run will feel SO much better than the rush of a temporary high. think of what you value most in life and what you want to achieve. remind yourself of your long-term goals whenever you feel yourself falling into a distraction trap.

Sometimes I think I'm addicted to smart channels like this and this has become my new entertainment vs having it actually change my life
tbh, the fact that I had to watch this at 2x speed to feel engaged fully probably proves the point. Tho I still wrote this comment during the video

Wow this is so interesting and the way you produced this video is really well done.
I had to restart this video 5 times because I kept getting distracted and had forgotten what I had just heard... Jesus Christ

Lots of things to thing about, many things to change and improve in my life now. Thanks for the info. I'm on it.
RJG I've also been experiencing these things..
RJG take it easy man. JUST CUT IT DOWN
Who is the you that is getting distracted? 😊🙏♥️
wow this was spot on, i remember a time when i would constantly be on my phone switching apps and spending countless hours on shot like facebook and insta now ive cut down to learning apps, stategy games and youtube, plus i watched this whole video without a single distraction:D
I've been thinking a lot about it these days. Thanks so much for such an amazing and elucidating video.
Was this your way to make me watch the whole video?
This is literally going to save my work weeks, thank you ! I am trying to restructure how I am approaching my work and this is gold !

The internet is more addictive than cocaine for some people, I can tell you that...
This is by far the most valuable channel. The day when i watch this channel, i definitely do exercise, yoga, meditation and also minimum sugar consumption.
What if you constantly do research, and/or learn scientific things on the internet?
you are someone who didn't forget that you are a homo sapiens, a tool-using animal. i think at this point a lot of people are, in fact, animals being used by their tools~
@@ballooneyjr4294 i've used the net for research for most of my adult life...as have many people...i don't think anyone is "seeking approval" for that.. the internet is just a tool...you know, you can kill someone with a screwdriver; it is all about intent
Bruce M. Yes I know it’s a tool, what I don’t understand is the need behind the question. They are not asking for new info just stating a fact about them with a question mark. That to me is asking for validation or something

Your channel honestly is the best on youtube. Please keep going
No kidding, Kerrygold is sold in Japan!!!!
Nicotine is supposed to help with focus!
Nicotine helps to focus the same way as removing too short shoes helps you feel relaxed. Allen Carr is the way to go to get rid of the nicotine hell
You are doing absolutely vital work, thank you for your contribution.
so basically, you should but your phone on silent or airplane mode during times when you need 100% focus to store the learned information in long term memory..
Makes total sense and I find it works very well when I apply that.. make your "breaks" from learning/working/studying/focus, when you check your social media or chat with friends < 10 minutes
Unless sadly someone calls with an emergency and cant get to me
This video, like all of your videos, is absolutely amazing. keep on making this great content!

Funny how exurb1a came out with a similar video on the same day.
I just watched it - that is funny how we made the same point about the internet cultivating a distracted mind.
This makes an incredible amount of sense. I’m glad my morning fogged & distraction craving mind chose to click on this video.
Huh?
Sounds like an effective abrogation of responsibility
I try not to endlessly scroll on FB, Insta, twitter, reddit etc. I'll check my notifications a couple times a day, but anything more than that is mentally demanding/draining and makes me feel gross. Instead I listen to a lot of music and distract myself (still in a somewhat negative way) by finding new music. At least finding good music feels more meaningful than passively scrolling for hours. Great video as always!

so would you say there is evidence to conclude Internet addiction can lead to A.D.D
ADD is a meme
I should do some research on ADD. And a generally distracted mind🤔
3 weeks later... could we please get a new video
ADD and ADHD is something your born with. It's there since your entire life and you can't just get it by out side factors. Outside factors can make your symptoms worse but they won't give it to you. It's just a chemical imbalance in the brain that causes people to think differently. It doesn't affect intelligence either.
+moonunit42 it's not made up its actually one of the most researched disorders and medication isn't for everyone who has it.
Thanks.
I've been using the internet for about 10 years, and my attention span is still fine... Maybe, it's because I didn't start young!
"- To clarify your attention span, can you work on projects like typing
or reading for 1-2 hours without distractions like checking your phone
or social media?"
Yes. I can focus on projects I like for even longer!
"- Do you regularly use a smartphone during your day?"
Nope! I have a smartphone, but it quit working... I never used it much, anyway! I can do everything, that I need to, on a laptop!
"- I'm assuming you use some forms of social media regularly because you're commenting on TH-cam. "
I check Facebook about once a day, sometimes not even that frequently... I mostly use TH-cam to learn about things, and make stupid comments!
"- how old were you in 2005?"
19
"- do you have a family history of addiction?"
My dad was a smoker! My mom was a drinker, but she stopped! I'm an internet addict!
"- how much time on average do you spend on the internet a day?"
Pretty much from after waking up until passing out at night!
Indeed! Thanks for inviting me to the play! :D
And sure enough! Here we find another example of how the millennials feel the need to put down other millennials and gen Z . Geez thanks!
I will start translating all your videos after I finish all the work i had been putting off that you helped me start.
Sincerely from the bottom of my heart, Thank you!
I watch almost all TH-cam videos at 1.5 - 2x speeds now. My attention span is shot. I can't stand the slow talking.
Are you sure this isn't done kind of ADHD or something you may be experiencing? (I don't mean to cause offence and I'm sorry if I did)
Many videos speak excessively slowly for the sake of clarity. It decreases the overall watchability. If you notice the clip at the end where the other guy talks, it is the people typically talk at and is far more engaging
