M3 Max MacBook Review - It's SO Good, BUT....

  • I bought this M3 Max MacBook Pro to help me grow my TH-cam channel, and while it is perhaps the best computer I've ever used, it still doesn't offer quite what I'm looking for.
    In this review I share my thoughts on the exciting M3 Max MacBook Pro, what I like / don't like about it, who's it for, and whether or not I will keep it for myself.
    The M3 has 16/40 cores with 48gb ram and a 1tb hard drive.

    I just did the same switch as you to my first mac - M3 max. I feel I couldn't go back especially for video editing workflows. It was sooo worth it

      It really is impressive and set a new expectation for me which I will compare EVERYTHING against. Ultimately for now, buying a used M1 Max makes more sense financially... so it sucks having to go backwards, but luckily this m1 max is still a beast for video editing... the battery is notiecably worse and I don't quite hit the same numbers for FPS in gaming or with Video effects, but it hangs in the same league.
      Enjoy that sick laptop!

    I’m not trying to grow a TH-cam channel but am on a similar path to finding that right machine like you are right now so I have really enjoyed watching you go through this process. A real genuine and modest way to present things so good luck! Pro tip… teal laptops run way faster than black ones!

      Haha, right? The colour totally would have made it worth thousands of dollars alone...
      Glad you've been able to follow along and hopefully got value from the series. I feel like I'm content with the decisions I've made and where I landed, for now.

      Yeah for sure. It was a bit of a transition coming over from a lifetime of Windows but like you said, when I bounced between different Apple computers etc, it was easy to use and setup each one. Installing Windows and setting it up on different computers is the worst.

    As a consumer, you get the worst cost-benefit ratio when you buy the latest thing on the market... but you are supporting innovation.

      I like that way of looking at it. It's a good reminder that if we want people to keep pushing the envelope we need to support them.
      I think once my Channels have grown a little bigger and I've got more resources to invest into my TH-cam efforts I won't feel as guilty about spending so much... but at the moment, I cannot.

    as a part time youtuber / videographer - here are my thoughts:
    yes you can get an M1Max for half the price of an M3Max, and the export speed will be the same since they have the same encoders. For light editing, it'll roughly be the same.
    however, whoever say performance is the same isn't telling you the truth. I have an M1Max Studio and M2Max MBP16", and at times i can tell a difference when working in davinci, esp on multicam. If money as a concern, I probably would go with an M1Max; however, if i am going to buy tech, I really dont' want to invest in old tech, esp 2 years old one.

    • @thesahdstudio
      @thesahdstudio  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For sure... and for me, being a Stay-at-home-dad (SAHD) money IS a concern. The m3 macs were my first exposure to the Apple ecosystem which is why I wanted to test it out before committing to the switch. I do like the ecosystem so had to find that sweet spot financially and the M1 max seems like it's it. I would have considered the m2 but there just weren't any great deals on it. This computer so far allows me to edit in a workflow that is fast and smooth knowing now how to optimize things when I need to (smart caching / render in place / proxies, etc). It's not as good as the m3 but it's still solid.
      I still need to buy an external SSD as a cache drive. It's on the list!

    These videos have been extreeeemely helpful, thanks for doing them. I edit in DaVinci too, and I went through a similar thing... got an M3 Pro first, and now I'm on a 14-inch M1 Max, just got it a few days ago, and about to return my M3 Pro! Similar performance reasons and a misunderstanding of the benefits that I'd get from the M3.

    I’m trying to understand your logic. The M3 Max didn’t cut it for you because of lack of dedicated video card. But you are going to return it for an M1 Max which also doesn’t have dedicated video, but is half the price? Why not get a maxed out Lenovo Legion Pro 9i with a 4090? Or heck, an all out HEDT PC with a 4090 which will destroy anything you can throw at it.

    • @thesahdstudio
      @thesahdstudio  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The portability man! Being able to video edit on battery is just the best for me. That outweighs everything else. The Macs are so efficient, run so cool, and the battery lasts so long. I've had 5-6 Windows laptops over the last 20 years and the batteries on them are usually gone after 2 years maybe not even holding half an hour charge at that point. Then my last one, I'm carrying the charger around with me plugging it in every time I move around. I'm over it!
      With that being said if things do start to pick up I wouldn't be against building a dedicated desktop with a sick video card one day! Not in the stay at home dad budget for now 😔

      Dedicated gpu doesnt make it any better thats bullcrap.
      An m3max sits right between a 150w(4080m-4090m).
      Nvidia has the advantage whwn it comes to software, more powerful libraries that took 30years for nvidia.
      MTL on desktop is only a few years old.
      X86 cpu s dont stand chance.

    I feel the same way. I bought the apple 16” certified refurbished M2 Max with 12 core / 38 gpu / 32 gig / 1 TB and coming from a 2014 base MacBook Pro if I’m being honest it’s a bit underwhelming. Sure it miles ahead of my old one but it’s 8 years newer. Like you I expected it to fly through video editing tasks when adding effects but it stutters using resolve studio. Still gets the job done but not as fluid as I had hoped and I film in 1080p. I have one day left in the return window but decided to keep it. Being refurbished it was a better value then the new version at $3800cdn before tax And I figure going to a lesser cheaper model then any max variant would even be less satisfying. Overall it’s very nice and I’m happy with it just feel that it’s overpriced considering what it was hyped up to be. In other areas I have been able to do things like live streams with OBS and have multiple cameras and my old MacBook connected via a hdmi capture card for screen sharing and using overlays etc and it flies through it all where my old MacBook could not even handle doing one camera with no effects live-streaming. It’s just the special effects that you noted in editing where you see hiccups and dropped frames. So maybe I need to start exploring proxies even with 1080p footage to work with a different codec as I learned from you. Anyways thanks for the video. Looking forward to seeing the M1 Maxx videos.

    • @thesahdstudio
      @thesahdstudio  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah that's a sweet laptop you've got there (based on what I've learned) for sure. As you mentioned, like me, I think you are starting to realize where bottlenecks really are for video editing, so you just need to adjust your expectations. Not sure if you saw my last video about Adding Effects, that might help you if you didn't.
      FYI I purchased a fully rebuilt (new battery/keyboard/cpu/gpu/hdd) used M1 Max for $3,000 on Marketplace and it has AppleCare until dec 2024. So you paid a thousand dollars more for a year newer tech. That seems about right based on my market research.
      M1 stuff coming soon!

    I would always max spec my phone when I upgrade every five to six years, and thinking about how I would approach a MacBook, I was thinking the same thing as well. But then I started looking at my use cases/cost. The M3 Max binned and unbinned are too much for me to take advantage of. I was torn between the top spec M3 Pro and the binned M3 Max.
    At this point now, I'm leaning towards the base M3 Pro (11-core CPU/14-core GPU; 36GB RAM; 2TB SSD) for working on my e-commerce business, schoolwork, media consumption, and travel, and I think this will do it beautifully without breaking the bank too much. Aiming to pick this up before my upcoming trip in April and before I return to school in May lol hopefully it'll be the right decision.

    Maybe by figuring out how your viewers consume your content, you can use tools that match those features.
    Example:
    If 85% of your audience were to watch using 60fps sRGB screens below 4k, then why make 4k content in adobe rgb when it gets converted into 1080p srgb anyways?
    i dont think people click off of a video because its not 4k or 90hz/120hz/fps
    I’ve written some quick and dirty example questions that might help get my meaning across. Feel free to change and disregard them.
    Kindest regards
    a stranger on the internet
    - Why do you make and publish the videos we see on your channel?
(Its written in your bio, but i find it a good reminder)
    - For who do you make them?
    - What are your goals with the content that you make?
    - What is needed for that?
    - What is technically unnecessary and Where comes your taste into play that?
    - Ask your viewers what they use to watch your videos on?
    - Maybe research what the people you want to reach use. what is the resolution, frame rate, colour space.
    - Maybe cater to your audiences setups.

      I'm having a lot of fun with my channel(s) creating the kind of content I would like to see. And that's my goal at the moment... Not to become a superstar TH-camr, but to continue to learn how to get better at creating videos, finding out the tools I need to do so, and sharing that with may audience.
      I agree that understanding the why and thinking about the audience is important. It's really nice to know which direction you are headed as that's one of the most important steps to growth.

    I came from a 2013 15" MBP and wanted something that could handle running FCPX and Adobe Lightroom Classic all at the same time so the unbinnned M3 Max MBP 16" has been fantastic for me and am glad I waited. Photo editing takes a lot of CPU and RAM so have been very happy with it. Laptops which would have a dedicated graphics card would be bulkier, get heated faster, make more noise, have worse off heating shortcomings and are also no match for the fast speeds and gorgeous 100%sRGB displays of the MacBooks. I differ from what this guy is saying. I have a Macbook M2 Max 96GB RAM and 1 TB storage. Pretty pleased with almost everything I throw at it. 76 Chrome tabs, Adobe After Effects and Premiere Pro, everything together. But I agree on the OLED point. Screen can get better. I've seen that the M2 Max refurbished is the way to go. We can get almost that same raw power of the M3 Max, but cheaper. I'm still at the fence of doing the switch though. I love my Pro. For my Steam games I have a modest SFF Windows 10 PC that plays them at medium settings quite nicely (a Dell OptiPlex 7010 that I upgraded). Obviously one platform doesn't do it all for me either.

      Until there is a big leap in the GPU area I think I should be good for awhile with the M1 Max. It seems cheap but jeez, it's STILL $3,000 Canadian dolllars... USED!

    Cost cost cost is all I’m hearing. I respect your budget, the cost of a M3 Max is not for everyone. It’s also part of an ecosystem for someone that has multiple Apple devices. I accept that maybe it’s not the cheapest entry way into any ecosystem, but the fact that my last windows I swore I would last buy literally fried on me just trying to do video editing, that happened 10 years ago, I bought a MacBook Pro then and until now I just retired it, and up until I retired it, it still works, it lags, but it’s not dead or fried, not one single virus. To each their own, but I’ll say that while some might think it’s over powered for the average user, I guarantee that in the next 5 years with the advancement of software and apps. It won’t be considered overkill, it’s called future proofing. That’s my take and why I’ll always invest in Apple, the test of time has always shown that a MacBook will run more efficiently longer than any high performing windows that wins the stats benchmark. Unless you’re a longterm Apple ecosystem owner, you’ll never have a clue of the value of “it just works” slogan and the true meaning of that.

    • @thesahdstudio
      @thesahdstudio  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Oh yeah, as a Stay-At-Home-Dad cost is my biggest factor. I want to be part of the "it just works" ecosystem but to get the latest tech and in the door with each of the devices Apple offers, well it's a lot of money. And I don't LOVE buying old tech (though I'm curious in the case of the M1 Max).
      With that being said, I do like to game sometimes and while the M3 Max is fantastic for everything else, my 3 year old laptop with a dedicated GPU smokes it in that department.

      Well, 10years is a long time and much has changed in both computers and video editing. Ten years ago video codecs we're not integrated into the hardware and required all resources for playback. For example Red footage needed a beefy system with a $4k adding card to fully playback the files at max resolution and framerate, now they work on any $1200 system. Even smartphones and mirorless camera bodies can playback complex codecs. So You don't really need to splash $5k anymore to edit stuff unless You need to playback ARRI RAW or Phantom highspeed files at fullres. Both Windows and Macs are great tools I too still have the intell Haswell PC that I built ten years ago to edit my second film, it still runs like a champ. Most networks I've worked for give M1 pros to their news editors and use iMacs and Mac minis for their Main editors and just a couple of macstudios for the DI and finishing suites. VFX and composition on Windows PCs

    • @sergiosanchez2012
      @sergiosanchez2012 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@thesahdstudio DI is acronym for Digital Intermediate it is a process where You scan film negative for grading and restoration, when You shoot on film You do a DI to color grade and masterization. And finishing is basically the broad term for conforming, grading and generation of all required video deliveries for a film or TV show.
      Yes, for tv projects, films or Even Big TH-cam channels You need different people accessing the same media and projects at the same time for different postproductions stages or simply to meet deadlines, so it's better to have everything in a fast NAS or SAN server, it is a bit chaper to settup and to scale up than internal and direct attached Storage.
      The most common bottleneck while editing is sustained read speed, with SSDs and Nvme You don't have that problem but You can only write a límited amount of TB to them before they fail, that's why in Macs is never a good practice to edit from the internal drives since they are not replaceable.

    I use 16” m3max 16cpu 40gpu 48gb , 14” M1 Pro base model 16 gb ram, desktop with 3090 and 4090, I do video editing, vfx, 3d, music , ai, etc. here’s my opinion.
    M3max got a serious GPU and raytrace engine update. Good enough finally for 3d, ai and other gpu accelerated apps . Blender on m3max is similar to my desktop Rtx3090. m3max 19 sec render. On 3090 16 seconds. The amazing part was no noticeable performance hit when unplugged ! No pc laptops can beat that. Games will have to be ported to Mac so not many titles at the moment but the hardware is there. You can run some games using crossover in emulation. Not ideal but it’s a start.
    For editing and music production probably the M2Max is best for the price performance. The software doesn’t maximize m3max hardware so not much of difference for now.
    I see a lot of TH-cam focus on editing as their benchmark running hardware encoding . M1 Max and up have the same 2 hardware encoders so you will get the same render times on all machines but that’s only for the encoding part of rendering. CPU and GPU are used for effects , grading, stabilize filters etc. The render time would depend on your style of editing and workflow.
    Try benchmarking using software codecs and see the render times using raw cpu gpu . This will give a clue to the raw processing performance without the hardware encoders.
    I’m still stuck on pc because many of my apps are pc only or it’s optimized for Nvidia like a lot of AI tools . Tried windows on virtual machine but they don’t have proper gpu support for now .

    M3 Max's GPU only goes up to 1.4 GHz. An RTX 4090 can turbo up to 2.5 GHz. The M3 Max 40 core GPU has fewer shaders than an RTX 3070. The RTX 4090 has more than 3x more shaders than the M3 Max.

    I think your review is very fair. As it is a personal need and want that will decide what you will spend your hard earned loonies on.
    Apple's laptops, and computers in general are expensive. It has always been that way. Right up until you dig a bit deeper in what you get for that extra money. There was another review of the ProArt laptop I saw against an M3 Max. And from just the benchmarks alone, the Mac beats the ProArt with 24c and a 4070 in most of the testing he did. I personally can't vouch for that as I only have an M2 Max, but I have a friend with the ProArt. And it's a loud hot beast compared to my quiet cool M2 Max. Otherwise it is a nice looking and functioning laptop. But, for me personally I am at home on a Mac and Mac OS. Never been a fan of Windows, but Microsoft pays the bills (I work in IT). So for me the money isn't the issue is the experience. That an battery power. Like you said, nothing beats the Mac when on battery. They simply can't as they all need more power to run at their rated specs. But, with that comes being tethered and of course the loud fans. These are the tradeoffs.
    If gaming is important or at least to a degree greater than what Apple has to offer. I would recommend Crossover for Mac to "help" your gaming on a Mac needs. If you do keep a Mac (the M1 Max should hold you over fairly well. However, it does lack a few GPU features that have been added on the M2 and of course M3 to improve performance). It will at least let you play games on Steam that are for Windows only.

I was actually thinking about your comment of wanting the machine’s CPU power but Apple’s GPU’s were not strong enough for your workflow. No use in keeping something that doesn’t meet your needs. Nothing special involved in the “reach out and let them know….” comment either. I was just talking about the basic “Product Feedback” portal that every company ask us for feedback through. Hi, interesting video thanks.. I'm a full time editor and have been using a Razer Blade Pro 17 with a 3080 and while it's a gorgeous machine even these will reach that point they can't work as fast as you can think, it's quite frustrating when you have clients at your heels and you just can't go any faster so I guess it's time to just except that this is part of the process and manage time and expectations as best as possible. From what I've seen the export times between the M3 max and M2 max are pretty much the same and would have to agree with you that for video editing it's probably not worth the upgrade but if money isn't really an issue then go for it, it's a solid fast machine. As for Windows laptops, the mobile 4090 card is actually more similar to a desktop 4080 in terms of the technology used and obviously not as powerful but still really great machines if you want maximum power which will come with heat and noise for sure. There really isn't a perfect video editing laptop but many options that will definitely get the job done, pick your budget and then work smart and manage expectations is really the only way.

      Codecs are not really designed to use all computing power available but to be encoded and decoded efficiently on a small camera circuit, TV or SmartPhone. So it starts to yield dimminishing returns after 12core and something more than a 3060 gpu.
      You can squeeze a bit more rendering performance or playback fps with NR or OFX plugins in a more powerful system but That's all, in 99% of situations it's not worth paying double the price if You're not getting 2x performance increase. That's why if You need speed you'll be better off with two systems instead of a beefier one. That's what studios do when they need to deliver projects faster adding NLE seats for assistant editors in cheaper good enough systems and lower the playback resolution or use caching or proxies.

Just show the laptop on battery on a sustained load and let's see how long it stays on. Then, plug it in on a thermal reading on the AC brick. Please show me how the Intel Machine with NVIDIA can do a sustained workload that will last all day on battery. OR, make a proper video and compare it to the Desktop Studio Max. I've had a lot of comments and support from most people which is why when I read your comment I was very surprised. Sorry to hear you felt that way. Beautiful thing about TH-cam is if feel like a video needs to compare a 4090 versus M3 Max then you should create it.
      You have to have thick skin to be a TH-camr and I do... But when people say that I'm stringing them along just to profit while I'm intended on returning stuff well, that doesn't make me feel good. The fact is I barely make money from TH-cam and Apple sure doesn't send me product... so if I want to switch over I have to do it all on my stay at home dad income which isn't a lot. Was to me as if watching a total lack in appreciation for what actually it was you had to work with including all of the trade offs which may have been overlooked especially for the performance output of the machine when compared by benchmarks based on video editing including the GPU aspect which the 4090 machine may have had a slight performance improvement but a far higher impact on energy consumption as well the GPU costing half the price of a maxed out MacBook Pro in 2024, as of right now. Then to want the best bang for buck which you actually had, made no sense to me as to why you went over to an M1 instead. Proper made me sick, trying to really listen to your opinion. You had one, so clearly could afford one, or you wouldn’t have one and if you couldn’t afford one, then you’re likely not earning enough to warrant any justification of obtaining a machine that hasn’t already paid itself off prior to purchase. And so on… Thanks for offering me a chance to unload this, much appreciation for your willingness to engage with me like this and follow up on that comment. Would love to try and better grasp what you’re meaning and where you are coming from with your actual position.

      You see reviews but don't know what it feels like until you get it... I also said a lot of amazing things about it so I'm surprised you focused on the 2 seconds I pointed out anything negative instead of the minutes I spent gushing about it.
