So many bots commenting. Workers deserve respect, decent pay, reasonable hours, time off, safety on the job, and a union. No business owner can run a whole factory on his own. If you and a buddy start a company and both work equally on the product, they are partners or the company doesn't exist. Every employee is trading time and skills (even if they learn the skill there) for a paycheck and they are necessary to make the product or provide the service. In the 1950-1970s, the CEO earned on average less than 30x the median worker. If the median worker earned $100/check, the boss earned $3000/check. I would say that is a bit much considering that start up companies usually have the employees earning a check and the boss earning next to nothing until 2 or 3 years of production or providing services. Now CEOs often earn 180-300+ times of the median worker, yet the boss doesn't do more than bosses did in the 50s to the 70s. Not only the employees are being hurt because of employers lying about unions and treating workers badly, the products/services, innovation, and quality is being hurt. A happy worker will collaborate, innovate, and produce better quality with increased quantity.
I believe it I worked for a small start up founded by former Tesla Managers needless to say we had massive turnover, I left has fast as I started very arrogant toxic work culture from management
One of the primary methods of determining fake news is if the story uses a disgruntled employee. Another method is whether the story is only using anecdotes. Fake news also uses percentages without showing the whole numbers or whole numbers without showing the percentages. You know kinda like this story.

I dont work in the paint department, but i work in BIW Body department and we carry somewhat heavy pieces for the front bumper and we do it fast pace, but everyone works well, no one gets harmed, even the old ladies work really well. Ive only been here for a month.
I use to work at Fremont Tesla like 8 months ago, as a material handler. I felt a strong sense of racism from the black people on the line that was installing the wheels on to the car. They threw lug nut boxes at me when I turned around, yelled at me for their own mistakes. Fuck Tesla and fuck those guys.
Not a fan of Musk, not a fan of Tesla AT ALL - but what this guy is complaining about is basically normal car manufacturing. I was a spot welder and a sheet metal press operator in the 80s (making parts for Mercedes and Leo-II tanks)... I would have swapped my job from back then for the "dangerous" work at the Tesla factory any time!
That's all done by robots now. I used to work at in the Mercedes plant in Alabama. I can confirm that what's happening at Tesla is the industry standard. Overwork and management not caring about workers is normal.
Perhaps the culture around manufacturing and most of the trades in general needs to change. I use to weld trailers and I could resonate with most of the things he said expect welders have way more of an additude so bad foremans were quickly brought to heel and we never worked more then 60 hours a week. We just wouldn't go in and they certainly weren't going to fire all 100 plus of us.
Millennials crying because they have to work hard, if they worked in a factory 50 years ago they would really know what hard work in unsafe conditions were really like. My first job was in a factory working 60+ hours a week and I never complained, these kids are soft
What a shame. As a millennial who got his back broken working his butt off, seriously you need to realise that being alive is different than living like a robot to work.
Lmfaoooo I work at giga NV. And yes. We do work our asses off. But people only get hurt due to people being dumbasses. It's an amazing job, with amazing benefits. And people talking trash on working for Tesla is ridiculous.
You work there for 5 years enduring such bad conditions. One would expect two years at the most at a bad job. After which you would have found another better job. You want to tell me the 'sweatshop job' was the best you could do for five years in the bay area?
The pay mentioned is $20/ hr. Hours worked were 12/day. By law any hours after 8 in a working day is time and a half (1.5 x $20 = $30 hour). So a 12 hour day pays ($20 x 8) + ($30 x 4) = $280. But any hours above 40 in a work week is time and a half. So some time on Thursday the pay rate jumps from $280/day when the employee hits the 40 hour mark to $360/day. Those are brutal hours to work, for a $20/ hour job (12 x 7 = 84 hours worked). But lots of overtime gives big money. ($20 x 40) + ($30 x 44) = ($800 + $1,320) = $2120/week. The worker is knocking down better than $2,000/ week gross pay. That’s better than $100,000 a year. Welcome to the world of the hard working middle class. 😎
To be honest do not come to the south especially Georgia to work because we work like this for decades. Our perspective is this it’s his and he can do what he sees fit with his company if you can’t respect that you resign and keep your peace.
I half understand this sentiment. On one hand, you built this company and should be able to do as you please. You took the risk, they take half your pay, you should be entitled to a lot. But on the other hand, do you just ignore the people who work for you and treat them like cogs in a machine? At the end of the day, I have to side with people. It's the system that's the problem.

Gonna be working for Tesla assembly soon. Money is decent for entry level. Never really trusted companies to care for their front end manual laborers so it's not really surprising. Although, it's been years and apparently nothing has changed for Tesla's assembly workers. I find that hard to believe but I'll be able to see for myself in a week.

Looking for to the decent pay checks.
The problem with overworked workers seems easy to solve, hire more workers. To get more workers: pay more per hour. When inducting new workers, let them ramp up to grueling work, start them off with a week at four hours per day, bump it up to six the next two weeks, then the full 8 hours shift at week four and beyond. This is to prevent and remove the pain from DOMS, which is what happens from suddenly exerting an amount of exercise your body isn't accustomed to. More workers with shorter shifts is the only way to keep up with a breakneck production rate.
I feel the Needs of Every Worker is Dependent on the Communication to Deliver sustainable transportation and Electric Vehicles. The Progress We See at Tesla is Hard, but that is the Price of Progress. There are those that need Accessibility Accommodations. As a More Perfect Union, if the Worker does not Speak up than the Validation of Tesla as a Company is not at fault. Unions are necessary socialistic fabric of United States. If you want a more Socialistic and high paying Tax go to Gigafactory Berlin. If you want more Communism, Shanghai Gigafactory has the perfect blend Capitalism and Communism. Tesla is an Equal Opportunity company. If this Gentleman with Knowledge of the Trade wishes to come back. I don’t see the Harm in Hiring him in a different factory that meets his Accommodations and Accessibility.
I’ve been working for Tesla 5 years and I don’t see anything this guys are saying… it’s factory so off course you have to work long hours .. if you don’t like to work there go somewhere else simple….
well that call shifts. each shift is best at 8 hours. 8 hours 7 days a week equals 56. also other places run 24/7 and they never put in long hours. If put in long hours all the time it means some one fuck up in the scheduling and did not hire enough people. which mean you should form union and go on strike. also a lot manufacturing processes are dated. the continual output assemble line is over 100 years old and people hate it and it inflexible to staffing shortages.
Seeing the stories from former employees, and stories I have heard from SpaceX employees... Just wow. I remember I saw a job posting where 1/4 of the post was about the different executives formerly working for Musk. I was like, anyone halfway intelligent sees that as a bad thing, not a good thing.
Assuming they can. I predict you'll see more protests against factories being built than people clamoring for these jobs as they'll realize it isn't worth it.
Yup - and they are destroying lots of jobs in those regions too... like in Germany where the government even paid them money to come over an kill a whole industry!
I live when people complain about jobs thinking it’ll be fun….no it’s hard work and they are extremely honestly on the application how long you work and how hard it is. If you thought it would be different then you probably aren’t the brightest this is coming from somebody who isn’t a fan of Elon or Tesla.
People get hurt by doing stupid things. I have seen it. We're working with dangerous stuff so why the hell would Tesla not pit people first. That's all I've seen there, safety first. PPE first. Non-compliant, go home. Simple. It's not a sweatshop. And we have water stations all around. Including big fans. And yes, it will get hot, especially in locations that have high Temps.
If you can't make it in California, a state with the most stringent labor laws, you will not be able to make it anywhere. Quit complaining, work hard, educate yourself for a better position and have a positive attitude, that's is the formula for success. The complainers in this interview are and will continue to be failures in their lives.
Warehouse work is manual labor. Doesn't matter if its name is Tesla, Amazon, Intel, or whatever. If you think it's going to be interesting and fun you have never worked in one before and shouldn't kid yourself.
Agree. I grew up in a town in Ontario. It was a "GM town". Pretty much everyone that didn't go to college, ended up working at General Motors. A few complained, but most didn't. People who worked there could afford a home in the same town, could afford to raise their kids, and drove new GM cars. And had the security of a decent pension after they reached retirement age. Workers stayed their for their entire careers. They were proud to say they "they worked at GM". The only way this positive employer/employee occurred was due to the union. While upper management might complain about the union, it many ways the union had a lot to do with the companies success. The tearing down of unions has resulted in assembly line workers unable to achieve a living wage ($23 an hour is NOT a living wage in the bay area!). These workers can't buy a home in the town where the plant is, can't afford a new car, can't afford to raise kids, and have zero security on retirement. The loss of unions has also affected all non-union workers as well. When GM had all these benefits, local non-union companies had to offer similar benefits in order to attract workers. So even non-union company employees absolutely benefitted from the unions. The anti-union movement punished all workers, not just the union companies. Today, very few private companies have any kind of pension plan. Unions help us all.
Lol..you think they make a lot at Tesla. He hires contract temps so he doesn't have to offer benefits or profit sharing. Guy tries to skip OSHA requirements for safety. Know wonder people get hurt. it just one of the reasons Tesla's always getting sued. So much miss management if it wasn't for Elon leaking all these ideas to the media they would be out of business
Sweat shop? I do not think so. I have worked in many warehouses many. Tesla facility is by far the best with all the free cereal and meals etc. if you get ran over by equipment it’s because you or another worker is not following proper safety policy. During orientation the reps go over this stuff time and time again but people fall asleep, they are on their cell phones and talking. Working with a sense of urgency does not = equal sweat shop. My gosh what has USA come too? The only bad thing about Tesla facility is the parking problem. There must be a way we can get people to come to work and not fight for parking spaces. That has to do with shift change. Why does Tesla have a shift end at 5:30pm and then for one to begin right at 5:30pm? Who is the idiot that thought this is a good idea? You want one shift to end first so there will be parking spaces for those that are coming in or else people start fighting. Other than that I it’s not a bad place to work and get money.
Yeah I’ve worked here for a bit and yeah it’s very stupid everyone here is overworked and they don’t have safe equipment, for example the drills they have twist your wrist from the torque all the time and they will slave workers making them pickup more work if they’re partner in there work station is gone. Trust me it’s not sustainable at all. Most the time we’re so hurt on man power bc no one stays at this job that’s why there always hiring
Good Lord ..page 12 of comments now and I can hardly take it. When I was 20 years old, I packed boxes full of school desks, in a dark dingy dirty 110F factory in Central Texas with NO AC, NO FANS, NO BREAKS except for 30 min lunch ... all for $3.75 an hour. A drill that twists your arm due to torque? That is the only way they can work. C'mon guys, somehow we have to toughen up as a society or all will be lost. :(
Not sure I understand, was someone forcing these people to work at Tesla? Can't they just go and goof off elsewhere? Nurses & interns also work crazy hours, but I have not heard them whine.
No, nobody forced them to work for Tesla, but I'm sure they were looking for opportunities in a decent, successful job environment when they got in, and I appreciate their courage to make this video and calling Tesla out for the exploiting, inhumane and profit over people conditions they must have, all while Elon Musk pretends to be the coolest new kid in the block. On what side are you by the way? On the capitalist exploiting one? Unbelievable!!!
Workers in India will always have it worse but this is United States, if that's what you want to hear, we don't appreciate human explotation in this country, this isn't India nor China.
"Dennis Duran, who worked at Tesla's Bay Area plant for 5 years" what the hell took him so long? Why didn't he speak out, fear of getting fired? Were there no other job opportunities around or was the pay just that damn good that he was fine sticking it out for 5 whole years? Aren't there a ton of jobs in the Bay Area for someone capable of keeping a job at Tesla for 5 years?
The pay! If you don’t live in the Bay Area u wouldn’t understand. It’s ridiculously expensive. Especially if you don’t have a degree, the pay & amount of hours really gets you locked in.
Nothing will change unless everybody there starts a union or starts protesting and stops Tesla production until this gets resolved and gets the attention that is needed management needs to e fixed managers there are the worst

It's physically demanding to where you want to just walk out. In some areas. Very draining of energy. Yes, we do need more people and at the same time a conveyance system for the battery modules would work well because to me it is not a human job 100%. They weigh a lot and pushing them to and from the lines is very taxing on the body. There are too many that aren't built right because of how fast they are moving and so that results in a lot of failures that rework has to fix and if they just slowed down to build the modules correctly and complete then this would not be an issue. There are entirely way too many modules to fix because of their numbers game.
You only work 3-4 days a week doing easy work at least in Lathrop I don't know how it is in Freemont. Lathrop facility is pretty chill easy work once you learn it. Just a bunch of lazy ass people who don't like working ain't many jobs that give you great benefits and 4 days off in a row
When you lied about Tesla on behalf of the union the truth will generally surface. Multiple unions have been charged and imprisoned for using union dues inappropriately. How about the working condition, wages, and benefits in other union factories are not as good as Tesla today.
Sweat shop isn't about pay. I could pay you $100/hr, but work you 20 hours a day...are you saying that isn't sweat shop conditions? Definition for you "A sweatshop is a crowded workplace with very poor, socially unacceptable or illegal working conditions." Sound familiar? The poor doesn't mean poor people, it means poor conditions.
Quit and find another job. What were these people doing before ? They must have worked somewhere else. People should not put up with this kind of tyranny not for money not for anything complaining self pitty and blaming the crazy inhumane management won't help they won't change as long as people come to work. The management does it because people let them do it. That's because of fear and lack of courage. Save some money and get out. It is a choice not destiny.
why do people hate TESLA? have ya'll seen how your Iphones etc are made? sheesh... be thankful to have a job... majority of the world doesn't even having a living wage.. .
It’s called entitlement. Don’t listen to these people. I have been there and it’s not that bad. This is why I like and support immigrants. I have seen so many immigrants come to the different warehouses where I work and take all sorts of hours then go off to their second job. They send their kids to school. And make the best out of it. A happy worker will collaborate, innovate, and produce better quality with increased quantity.

Fuck Tesla and fuck those guys.
how's it going?
Not a fan of Musk, not a fan of Tesla AT ALL - but what this guy is complaining about is basically normal car manufacturing. I was a spot welder and a sheet metal press operator in the 80s (making parts for Mercedes and Leo-II tanks)... I would have swapped my job from back then for the "dangerous" work at the Tesla factory any time!
That's all done by robots now. I used to work at in the Mercedes plant in Alabama. I can confirm that what's happening at Tesla is the industry standard. Overwork and management not caring about workers is normal.
@@incubus_the_man My line foreman was actually quite OK but in the end you gotta learn quick or adapt as the foremen can't cover for you forever...
It seems worse because companies like Tesla like to virtue signal
Yea ive been inside Honda and General Motors and it's the same shit different toilet

The pay is too good, people just want to complain. If it wasn’t one of the best jobs available people wouldn’t work there.

These critics are mostly
The lazy types who didn’t fit in at Tesla and are now complaining about it.

I work in the manufacturing sector this is nothing new.Its not for everyone. If the majority of workers feel the same then you would have a union.
You're right, they should have a union. Shame Tesla is known for it's vehement anti-union stance and union busting practices.
Anyone here familiar with their fire protection division?
And I did lol. I was amazed at the place both good and bad. They will hire anybody, qnd for good reason.
well that call shifts. each shift is best at 8 hours.

At least he giving you a job. Try running your own company.

Stay strong

Trust me it’s not sustainable at all. Most the time we’re so hurt on man power bc no one stays at this job that’s why there always hiring

"Dennis Duran, who worked at Tesla's Bay Area plant for 5 years" what the hell took him so long? Why didn't he speak out, fear of getting fired? Were there no other job opportunities around or was the pay just that damn good that he was fine sticking it out for 5 whole years? It's physically demanding to where you want to just walk out. In some areas. Very draining of energy. Yes, we do need more people and at the same time a conveyance system for the battery modules would work well because to me it is not a human job 100%. They weigh a lot and pushing them to and from the lines is very taxing on the body. There are too many that aren't built right because of how fast they are moving and so that results in a lot of failures that rework has to fix and if they just slowed down to build the modules correctly and complete then this would not be an issue.
