I dislike that at the beginning of the video you suggest there will be interviews with former employees and even show a 5 sec clip of one. Yet, for there are none throughout the remainder of the video. I watched this whole 40 min ordeal just to not even see that part that had me interested in the first place. After scanning your references, they don't appear to be in there either. So idk why even bring them up in the video if you don't actually reference them or showcase them in any part of the video.
His daughter is transgender. That’s the missing piece in the story. He said it’s a major reason he bought Twitter, because he thinks she was brainwashed to be trans by her California University. It’s personal.
He's going for 'control'. Simplifying it to trans is way too simple. He's not going to tell you the real reason, he's an expert at marketing. Narcissistic megalomaniac, with plans for media communications and designing his version of the world that is way off the scale of 2024 paradigms, and completely self interested.
@@bardsamok9221 accurate. Although, it’s pretty obvious from his recent talk with Jordan Peterdong that him being a dead beat dad to his trans daughter was a huge part of the motivation. He’s coping sooooo hard about her changing her last name and saying she never wants to see him again.
That's why it's so important to know your blood. Most children today don't know their real parents are. They were never accepted for who they really are. Most people see children as a commodity to maintain a status quo. Never to pass down their own wisdom.
That's a cute quote... where'd you find that gem? While people may mark that as wisdom... it's just a qoute. People use quotes all the time for many different things.. but saying a qoute isn't a measure of wisdom nor is it contributing to teaching others the difference between reality and some messed up ideology like "non-binary" humans.
Hey Johnny, you’ll probably never read this comment but I think I know why Elon had his pivot. I’ve been a shareholder way longer than most Tesla stans and have been watching Elon’s progression in real time, before most people had even heard of him. The pivot came because of the pandemic but it was the final straw of 4 events I see as formative to his current world view. There was the jury trial Tesla lost regarding racism and resulted in a gigantic jury award (later overturned). Elon prides himself on being race-agnostic, and as a youth, he was much more willing to be friends with black South Africans than other whites. He was very confident Tesla was going to win the trial, and likely blames the “woke mind virus” for the unjustifiably high award. Then there was his daughter coming out as transgender. There are few details about this but I think it is safe to say Elon did not take this well. They have no relationship with each other and again Elon likely blames woke ideology for this. He keeps saying that he “is a liberal”, but he thinks the political spectrum has moved so far left that it makes him look like a conservative. Then there is his sense of betrayal by the Democratic Party,(which he voted for up until either the 2016 or 2020 election) which has never embraced him despite the fact that he made the electric car happen (along with improving large-scale electrical storage). Because Tesla is not unionized, the Dems cannot get too close to him for fear of alienating their union base. He has been repeatedly shut out or ignored by the Dems on many initiatives, whereas e.g. Mary Barra was given undue credit for innovating in the EV space. Lastly, the pandemic happened, and as someone else here had mentioned, he was angry that the government had the power to shut down his factories. He himself had a different view of the seriousness of the pandemic, and felt that he was being muzzled and censored for his view in the early months and days of the pandemic.
You have described someone who needs approval and is terrified of criticism. Without taking in feedback how can he get the course correction one needs to avoid going over the waterfall or over the cliff?
I think it is hard to take any other criticism seriously if you are in charge of so many lives. At the pinnacle of power you will choose the most trustworthy to be your sole advisors.. Otherwise you will go wrong all the time..
"Not taking well" that his daughter is transgender is already conservative ideology, making all claims he's liberal untrue. He seems to generally reason from first principles and has historically been pretty rational to build Tesla and Space X to where they are, but on societal issues he's clearly dogmatic. If he wasn't, he would know basic facts, like gender affirming care has a wildly positive effect, or that there are physiological differences in the brain of transgender people which align more with their gender than their biological sex. The only explanation I see is he's so conservative he's blinded by his values.
One correction to this above comment " the political spectrum has moved so far left that it makes him look like a conservative." Many studies have show the the political spectrum hasn't moved left at all, but the right has gone much further right. I suspect that due to your reasons above (and others) that he has taken a wild lurch to the right.
@@pinkstor I don’t know either way whether what you say is true, but I was saying that Elon thinks that the spectrum has moved left, I wasn’t making a statement of fact.
I wonder why he never mentioned the failed hyperloop, instead he’s distracted by being the last person to figure out the boring company joke. P.s. it’s just another tunnel boring company, he didn’t innovate shit.
@@JordanAF808 Yes, also the claim that Musk invents "unprecedented" feats of engineering when he's really not, just trying to improve existing ones: making rockets cheaper, make electric cars more popular etc... Some details in this video are downright false like Musk allegedly trying to buy the Soviet ICBMs in order to "rebuild" them when the plan was to just shoot one to Mars with a camera and a flower pot and claim "life on Mars" as a marketing stunt - no rebuilding was planned. Very superficial and poorly researched video unfortunately.
I can not stress enough how important twitter is for turkish opposition. Twitter is only social media platform in Turkey that is widely used and you can interact with. It is the organizing place of Gezi Park Protests,it is the place where journalists publish their investigations,it is the place where people who had forced to escape Turkey get their news and share their beliefs and information with Turkey,it is the place that international news enter to Turkey unfiltered. It is vital. It is the radio of 3rd world countries.
@@vincentmatthis I don't think that paper communication could gather several thousand people to occupy the Bosphorus Bridge in the middle of the night because 50 protesters were brutally beaten in a random park in Istanbul, and that just 7 hours after the incident in the morning, it could mobilize one of the country's largest universities in full force and trigger a protest that almost resulted in the seizure of the parliament building.
@@mjouwbuis I hope it stays like this but I don't think so. There are several reasons. First, Musk avoids conflict with Erdogan and shuts down opposition accounts upon request, especially accounts of the Gülen movement and whistleblowers from the more "dark side" of the Turkish State. Second, the bot game is big in Turkey. Each party has its own unofficial but somehow related bots and trolls (this may be an effort of that party or it may be a reaction to Erdoğan from the party's mass, especially its youth branches). But Erdoğan and his party use bots and trolls on a completely different scale. Even if the old Twitter couldn't solve this problem, it at least curbed it. Musk isn't even trying.
One of the most annoying and polarizing things I've seen, is that many Conservatives have become convinced that all Liberals are all hard core leftists. And of course equally on the flip side, many Liberals have become convinced that all Conservatives are far right. You all basically want mostly the same things, but both sides act as if the other wants entirely opposite things. The average person, regardless of their political side, is not so unhinged. The minority does not represent the majority, but the minority speaks the loudest, and the majority never speaks at all. Thats the problem..
Yes, and when someone as influential as Elon stokes these fires and has the legion of fan boys on here as he does.....that can't even see the issues this guy is bringing.....we are f*cked. These are suppossedly educated nerds, most of them.
ahh, the Silent Majority-old as Nixon. definitely agree media incentives amplify the most insane voices, but i don’t think we can just “both sides” this; i think there really is a disparity between American right and left in terms of who’s more unhinged-remember Kellyanne Conway and the “alternative facts” community? i can’t remember sources, but here and there you pick up results of surveys, like 60-80% of voting Republicans genuinely believe the 2020 election was stolen, whereas less than 20% of voting Democrats are Progressives. tldr: qanon >> woke
they have become convinced of that because Donald Trump's teacher in politics was the attorney for Joseph McCarthy. You know, the same McCarthy who was one of the greatest demagogues the US ever had, who claimed there was a communist hiding behind every corner. Using the same rhetoric Trump and the republican party have become the source of modern day McCarthyism. It's far more devious than most people know.

It’s heartbreaking how childhood trauma creates monsters. I have compassion for anyone who has undergone it AND They have an option to overcome it instead of becoming the villain themself. 😢
yes yes and yes. trump too had a very sad and unacceptable childhood filled with tons of emotional abuse and neglect. the man is a psychopathic tyrant and i think both he and musk are certified narcissists who are creating terrible problems--but it's a good reminder of just one of the many reasons why we need to protect and nurture children. we reap what we sow and the mess belongs to all of us.

8:08 "Patents were not copyrighted" That's not how patents work. Patents and copyrights are two distinct forms of intellectual property protection, patents can't be copyrighted.
He also didn't "open source" anything as far as i know. Open source means there is an explicit license granting rights to use, modify, and redistribute. Harris didn't show any open source licences or suggest that any existed for Musk-owned products.
@@reed6514 incorrect, open source does not mean what you said, there's 1000 different open source licenses, Apache, MIT, ...that are actually very restrictive. Open source does not automatically grant you the right to modify or redistribute. Why you must know the license terms of the Open Source
I remember digging into the claim that Tesla's patents were open for any company to use and pretty quickly found the catch. I don't recall the details, but it hinged on a total non-starter of an agreement you had to sign onto if you wanted to use their proprietary charging solution. Car companies had other options that didn't involve basically giving Tesla an automatic competitive advantage and went for that instead. Almost universally. The outcome (almost nobody in the market taking such a generous offer back when Superchargers were pretty much the only name in town) should speak volumes as to the value of the deal on offer. Sure, they eventually dropped the requirement and now we have car companies declaring support for NACS charging standard over the next few years, but the idea Harris presented that Musk left the patents wide open and free for everyone is just straight-up propaganda (at the time it happened). It's an incredibly misleading narrative that ignores the massive strings attached. If the patents were genuinely open and available, it would have been a big PR win and a huge move forward for the industry - instead it was just a free PR win at the expense of setting back EV infrastructure development and making sure Tesla remained the only viable option as long as possible.
It’s not surprising coming from ex-Vox media. Reminds me of when Vox published a video about TikTok claiming they made $16B profit when the article shown clearly shows revenue.

Jonny's take on Musk's Twitter is Liberal-slanted, no surprise. Even if Musk censors Liberals, it does not even come close to balancing the tide of censorship that is directed against Conservatives. I've seen it used against myself plenty.
There was facts of a matter and journalism is often an appeal to emotion so I'm not sure what to make of your comment. My concern is that you think that Elon Musk deserves a bunch of hate when if pressed won't really be able to come up with an articulation to defend that has no one has been able to.

I heard Instagram was blocked in Turkey, has X/twitter been blocked too? Do you know why? Is it because of the dog killing? Or is there other stuff going on too? I have found memories of Turkey, I thought it was a friendly place, I feel sorry for all the problems your country has been facing, I also feel very very sorry for the dogs.
Twitter was actually doing a lot of illegal stuff, X is probably following the countrie s laws, that’s why some countries like turkey or india have a lot of bans vs usa. At the time of twitter, they would block accounts even if these were fine according to the law, and would not block accounts that were illegal in some countries. That’s what’s changed
Is this why we rarely see Tom Scott and Michael from Vsauce anymore? They took a step back at a point when we desperately needed videos like from those
I think TH-cam is leading the pack now when it comes to censorship, even surpassing Facebook. It seems as though all of the deranged leftists that used to work at Twitter, are now to working for Google.

Really cool to see how Johnny took criticism of his fact checking process and has just quietly improved and overhauled his sourcing to the point that he’s footnoting every assertion and sharing it with readers. Investigative reporters employ this level of scrutiny, but the practice of sharing sourcing in this way is exceedingly rare in journalism.

The most insightful part for me was the part about Elon's childhood. It seems like that horrible treatment from his peers and his own father screwed with his emotional development, and left him literally scarred for life. Maybe he didn't have anyone to look up to regarding kindness and empathy. I do appreciate that he wants to do so much for humanity, but it seems because of his past he genuinely doesn't know how to care for actual, specific human individuals. He doesn't know how to be emotionally vulnerable, and that probably hurts him too.
I feels the same by the way, people overrated him and misunderstood how he got into success. He is more of a business than an inventor/thinker, he is more Edission that he is to Tesla.
As an autistic person myself (diagnosed), I think Musk sounds like what happens when an autistic person with relatively high self focus/"other people are means" understanding (like my daughter) also is rich enough that he can get away with it, only having to care about the sanction of law, but not social rules. Most relatively severely affected autists only want to do, in fact only manage to do, what they like to do. My daughter has a kind heart, but if she wants to spend time gaming she will not be able to take other people's plans/situations/almost anything else into account. It is not hat she doesn't care, just that the urge to do what she want to do is so much stronger. I can moderate her when necessary, but only because she has to rely on me for certain things. Musk doesn't have to rely on any specific person. He can replace them. This also shows in how he treat his girlfriends. He is rich and single sided; either he gets it his way or they're out. They even have to sign a girlfriend contract. He is in a position where he can't be forced out of his autistic mode, so he only gets more locked into his way being the right way, regardless of what anyone else say. Remember; I'm an autistic person (diagnosed). I know that if we get moderated in a good way, we can learn to moderate ourselves healthily. at least to some extent. This has never happened to Musk. He doesn't moderate himself unless he sees that it would give him an advantage.

He ponders things carefully, so your analysis is flawed. He just arrives at different conclusions, and yes how others feel in the moment isn’t high on his concerns in an eventual decision.
Much of this analysis is difficult to reference or qualify because it describes Elon or his conduct in abstract terms. I appreciate that brevity requires generalizations, but there’s a whole lot of psychoanalysis with barely any qualification. As a lawyer I also got set off 17 different ways by the statement that his patents weren’t copyrighted and that explains their being open-source + publicly accessible. This is incoherent, it’s common knowledge that patents and copyrights are completely separate forms of IP protecting different aspects of a work - a “copyrighted” patent doesn’t mean anything. Besides, patents are always publicly accessible, which doesn’t say much to a patent-holder’s charitability. If Elon liberally licensed or otherwise gave away his companies’ patent rights that would be noteworthy, but there is no reason to spend money and resources on getting a patent if you are simply going to give it away - so I assume this didn’t happen as described. I appreciate this might seem nitpicky, but I’m not describing a complex legal technicality, and to the extent that the thesis of this video essay is based on such generalized facts that are either ambiguous or blatantly wrong, I can’t say I learned much of anything concrete except what Johnny Harris thinks of Elon Musk’s mindset. How to convey information in an essay is a personal choice, but I find such basic mistakes to be a gross journalistic oversight. Nevertheless, I appreciate the effort and hope to catch you on a train stop some other time! Toodles! :P
Thank you for the insight on patents vs. copyrights. Regarding trying to assess some of Elon Musk's conduct, I don't it's a matter of abstraction. For example...when Nancy Pelosi's husband was attacked, and then Elon shared a link to a conspiracy theory website that lied about it, and then Elon later deleted the tweet without correcting the misinformation...that is just bad behavior. A man with one of the biggest platforms in the world (artificially boosted by him) should be even more careful about spreading lies. In addition, if he allows someone onto the platform that outrageously lies (e.g. Alex Jones), he then becomes complicit in spreading the lies. I'm not saying Elon is an evil dude. Like everyone else, he's a mix of good and bad. But one of the things that bothers me about free speech absolutionists like him (other than hypocrisy) is how some view free speech as this moral ideal, and then go on to express themselves in bad ways (lies, misinformation, etc.). Regarding freedom, humanity would fare better if we remember the counsel of Viktor Frankl (paraphrased): next to the Statue of Liberty, should be built the Statue of Responsibility.
It's not nitpicky of you, that's the basic critical thinking Johnny missed on this video because he just doesn't have the time for those details. Most people who are into tech and culture just don't care about the legal details.

Yeah, I guess the fact that Twitter misrepresented the number of Bots that were members in their estimates wasn't of enough of an issue to give Elon at the very least a more accurate valuation number to overpay for the privileged. Or maybe, his discovery during the standard kinds of due diligence in buying a public company showed some kind of drama with the Federal Government that would have to be cleaned up or lived up to, might have made him a tad more hesitant, once the final show and tells we're going on. Looks like you talked to a lot of his employees XDDDDD so awkward as there are so many interviews of former and present. So you are mostly wrong. However, in the end, there are times where this is exactly the role of CEO. There are countless examples of companies failing due to their CEO being incapable of a firm word while not being surrounded by competent employees (effect of the very same CEO). Everybody applaud to Steve Jobs, who did NOTHING and only commanding others. Elon Musk is stressfull, but he can make things cheaper and better than others. And he have thousands of employes (Jobs had few, even under ten individuals), so nobody should feel bullied. IF he will wuestion you, you will not see him for a year (because he has to question the other thousand). ;)
Just a quick correction - When you're talking about India, at 36:49, the documentary was about the Prime minister, Mr. Narendra Modi, not the presidemt
Think about this: I worked for Kroger as a cashier for 31 years. There was a strict rule that we were not to talk about politics with customers. Why? Because it's bad for business. Yet, Musk decides to buy Twitter and make it into a blatantly conservative outlet. So he's pissing off the most of the people who would actually buy his electric cars. Left leaning people care about the environment. Yet Elon has hooked his wagon to Trump, whose campaign worships the use of fossil fuels. Between him and Trump, I'm beginning to wonder how damn stupid you have to be to become wealthy.
Seems to be working. It’s possible that because Teslas are expensive, so maybe his sales were plateauing since the people who could afford it and wanted electric all had it. Plus now many car companies sell electric cars. By appealing to wealthy conservatives who haven’t bought the car, he could make more sales, and those customers might be less likely to buy from other brands that don’t appeal to them. This is all speculation of course. He might just be rich enough it doesn’t matter. Being openly political can lose you customers sure, but it could also gain you even more loyal customers. I mean he probably went from just some rich guy who made cars and rockets, to someone an entire political party idolizes. You really don’t see this with other rich people like Bezos or Gates.
You have to be profoundly stupid and maliciously callous. If you care about other people, you don't make the decisions that raise your wealth. If you are intelligent, you'll be too aware of the externalities and long-term repercussions of your plans actions and make wiser choices.
You ever think that it’s not about being stupid? Those customers may not matter to him anymore, he’s already way beyond wealthy and moving onto something else. He can afford to be inconsistent because of his wealth and now because of his hold on the government.
@Dilomight idk, in my experience, the mega wealthy don't want to lose a penny. It's just as easy to lose it all as it is to get it. Ask some people who won the lottery and are back to broke today. Trumps father and grandfather made Donald and the kids pick up nails at construction sites. That's how tight fisted they were. But hey, it's no skin off my butt if he's wealthy or poor. I don't have to see him or hear him. I can turn the TV or phone off.

The study on the algorithmic amplification of political content on Twitter was funded and conducted by Twitter itself. The researchers involved were affiliated with Twitter, the University of Cambridge, University College London, and the University of California, Berkeley Not very biased imo

No matter who is in charge of a social media company, all will have an underlying bias that will show in the content they push, allow, and/or censor. Its so hard and I wouldn't want to be the one to be in charge. However, there is absolute truth. In the Age of Information we have so many voices that it makes it almost impossible to tell what is the truth. In times past, what was true was only what you observed or experienced. Its so easy to wish for simpler times. Yet, no season is simple. Each chapter comes with its own perks/benefits and hardships.
Interesting point. If you really do allow all voices, the truth gets lost in the noise. But if you censor out some of those voices, you can never be sure what remains is the truth.
The release of the Tesla patents was newer about getting the EV market to take off , it was more to stifle competition from anyone who could mass produce a Tesla Model S competitor. A key part in the terms of use, for Teslas patents, was that any use of them will give Tesla free access to use any patent owned by the user, both current and future, without paying royalties. This forced any established competitor to come up with solutions that in no way could be seen as infringing on a Tesla patent, delaying their entry in the market for years. The biggest looser, apart from the EV market, was AC Propulsion. They had deals with car companies to make electrified versions of the most popular models, but as Tesla patents were based on those AC Propulsion supplied to build the Roadster the risk of Tesla claiming that their patents were infringed upon ensured that these projects died soon after the "release" of the Tesla patents. The only winners, apart from Tesla who delayed competition, were the new mainly Chinese car manufacturers who had no patents to loose and now stands to take over the EV market and make sure that the US will not be a major car producing country in the future. All thanks to Elon Musk!
Established OEMs had the choice to access cutting edge technology and chose not to. If they had chosen to do so and shared their patents, everyone would have benefited from it. Since they chose not to, they will die and a new patent free system will emerge from the new Chinese companies. Patents slow progress
The fact that you expect Chinese EV manufacturer will be the winner because they have no patents to lose, means those patents which the "established car manufacturers" own do not worth that much anyway. They should follow suit and copy Musk/Tesla's move. They should allow everyone to use their patents freely with the exact same condition and arrangement.
It’s a fair deal in my opinion, a start-up company with little experience can quickly gain access to cutting-edge technology patents at the cost of Tesla being able to do the same to them. In a way, this deal accelerates innovation through the sharing of patents, but of course most companies are not willing to give up their technological edge in other patents that they possess just to get on the same level as Tesla in terms of EV technology.

Will ex-Twitter remain that way under Musk? He might give parties that are favourable to him, some kind of advantage for example.
@@Kmlcvlk999Yes. That is why he bought it.

Maybe he didn't have anyone to look up to regarding kindness and empathy.

Toodles! :P
Teach me law, seriously.

The problem with Johnny Harris: He keeps trying to sell me useless stuff like VPNs.
Very insightful but you forgot the part where he tried to back out of buying Twitter then the courts forced him to go through with the deal!
Exactly! That was definitely intentional, among other things. That way most people can label Musk a bad guy.
The Bots alone should have drastically reduced his buying price, and the only reason the stock price held when it was announced was the offer on the table..... Jesus that court order could have gone the distance had he wanted it to.
@@whatacrazyride1658 Elon pretended to want to buy Twitter in order to get access to that kind of info so he could publicly reveal it, prove his assertions that his critics were bots for months right, and back out of the deal. Does tingle down there because the truth hurts
Saying he made his patents "open source" is misleading. All patents are open for the public to read. They're free, but only free if you let them use all your patents or something.. there's a lot on the internet about this.
You comment itself is misleading too!? So what’s your point

"FREE SPEECH", a good banner, but does Elon tolerate free speech from his employees. Not for a second, all for ONE.
People thinking that his companies are successful despite Elon are simply delusional.
Confirmation bias is not feared in science and aviation for no reasons, because it quickly leads to serious misjudgments.

Just as Elon announced he would be supporting Trump's republican this election- CIA stooge 'Johnny Harris' is obviously NOT happy with this.!!
If you're looking for carefulness with facts, you're on the wrong channel.
More like Orwellian Conservatism. I'm ashamed of many of my fellow Americans right now.
The definition of freedom is that your freedom stops where the freedom of another one begins. In this case, the one with the bigger "everything" has more freedom.
The study on the algorithmic amplification of political content on Twitter was funded and conducted by Twitter itself. The researchers involved were affiliated with Twitter, the University of Cambridge, University College London, and the University of California, Berkeley
Not very biased imo
Yeah I think Johnny is a liberal lol
The results of that study are confirmed by at least three other independent studies
@anonimous__user The study its self has issues around trying to define what tweets fall under what part of the political spectrum. It is an extremely subjective study, that also misses some key assertions.
@@wisemanofsorts6068 i understand. The topic itself is very tricky. Still, what the comment above was implying (that the study is biased because it was performed by people who worked at Twitter) can be dismissed because independent studies, performed by people who had nothing to do with Twitter, confirmed the results.
What year was the study done? Censorship of the right on old twitter definitely ramped up for Donald trumps election and during Covid.

Exactly
I wish someone would??
It's really intresting to note that China now has mostly electric cars on the road.
It's called a genius move
