      I've been driving my 2017 DMAX for over 4 years by now and it never let me down. The engine is super durable just like its name. I've never had any issues with the engine or the other parts. And of course I have to make sure the maintenance is properly cared.

    I brought my D-Max back in 2014. Huge amount of research done on internet. Boiled down to two vehicles. Nissan and Isuzu but reading a write up from a forest ranger finally sold me on Isuzu.
    I needed a left hand drive but found a company in Hampshire Uk who deal in left hand drive vehicles.
    I drove it across Europe to Greece and must say it’s the most comfortable car l’ve ever owned. I should point out it’s a(2.5 litre diesel).I have done this trip 3 times now and l have no complaints with it at all.
    Very economical to run and no problems getting parts in Greece.
    My only problem was the tyres l had on the car when l got it.They were useless on Greek tarmac. Back end regularly stepped out on corners and in the wet it was like driving on sheet ice (not good.
    So internet search and hrs of reading brought me to Michelin all terrain tyres.Hug the road like glue in all weather. Completely changed the handling of the car and gives great confidence to the driver.
    I will never understand how manufacturers get away with one tyre brand and assume it’s ok for all countries WRONG !!!!!.
    It’s left to the owner who buys the car to find this out. Plus the large hole in your pocket after renewing 5 tyres. Not good, Not good at all.
    I still have my Isuzu now and would not change it for the world. I’m also 6ft 6 ins tall and I’m 70 yrs of age. Comfort was a must when l brought it having an old back injury.
    No problem there plenty of room inside.
    It’s a real work horse here in Greece and has never let me down.

    A few things Paul. Isuzu have only just increased metallic paint from $500 to $650. The stickers on the sail plane were on MY21 versions and Isuzu have already started applying the free software update for the lane keep assist button on the wheel for Auto MY21 owners upon request. Owners of manual vehicles will also require the button to be added to their wheels.

    Your reviews rock and like the honesty, i think they need to be moving to the larger media display and integrating more into it. Also if you have the 2021 version you can apply with your Isuzu to enable the lane keeping assistant to be disabled as you have with the 2022 version, so i am stoked about that.

    I have an sx my21 dmax and love it. Car is comfortable to drive on road (could use softer stock suspension but a lot of people are going to replace it anyway). It goes amazing off road, even stock sigh the highway terrains. The rear locker has gotten me out of a pinch fantastically. It feels very decent accelerating with plenty of power available. The only things I would improve are:
    -softer stock suspension
    -LED head/taillights on all trim models
    -slightly less invasive lane keeping assist
    Also by the way, Isuzu are offering an update to turn off the lane keeping with the same button as the my22 for free, just have to book it in and take the car to them.

    Thanks Paul - I also noticed in previous models too that the odd design and placement of the front Isuzu badge and surrounding plastic trim ends on the wagon as well as it just looks incomplete because the badges on the Hilux and Ford are centred which looks balanced - yes I know people just don’t care but it would annoy me from a visual stance - not sure how the aluminium tail shaft will perform and hopefully not vibrate at highway speeds after a few thousand kms has been driven - I’ll stick with my Pre DPF Hilux John in SA

    I prefer those decently big 9-10" multimedia displays over those 12.3" or whatnot displays like what you see on the new Ranger. If you think long-term, even if the multimedia turns out not as reliable as it should be, it'll be easier to replace those 8-10" screens with aftermarket ones with those 2-DIN headunit panels being offered around the market compared to those big-ass 12-13" portrait screens which will only and surely give you a pain in the ass probably after more or less 10 years or so.
    So yes, this D-Max or BT-50 over the new Ranger. All day, any day.

    Hello Paul and all, I had my cracked windscreen replaced today on my 2020 Mazda BT-50 XTR as I was going to sell it as I am sick and tired of wrestling with the lane keeper assist. The safety features on this car are the worse I have ever come across in all my years of driving. When I talk to service staff they all duck for cover. You stated in this review you will have the ability to turn these features off in the new 2022 DMAX. After picking up my car they said they recalibrated the cameras to ensure the safety features would work correctly after replacing the windscreen and even handed me a chart showing how they corrected the cameras. Bloody Hell! what a difference, the safety features worked perfectly on the trip home. I even went for a drive on a nearby highway for further testing and all the safety features performed floorless. Are Isuzu not calibrating the camera's on these cars before shipping them?

    Personally I feel the power is not a deal breaker. If the car can outlast the competition then I would rather opt for reliability. As a reviewer, I do understand how they point towards that. It seems like a really good alternative than the competition.

    • @CarExpertAus
      @CarExpertAus  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This engine only just launched - how do you know how it'll perform in years to come? We don't comment on reliability because it's unknown (on any make) when we test a brand new car. We will always point out issues we have on test (such as the knocking issue in the LandCruiser).

    • @dawiepieterse9703
      @dawiepieterse9703 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@CarExpertAus thanks for your response. We'll, for one the power output... I couldn't imagine it being stressed much? Whereas other brands are upping the power, this one remains almost pretty much the same. And also (you can please correct me on this), is it really a brand new engine? Or just and updated version from the previous version? History has shown us (typically) that an updated engine is far more reliable than a brand new, from the ground up design. Yes, you are right in saying you as a reviewer can't comment on reliability however there is a large portion of the buying market putting this as one of the more important buying factors. I reckon this is why a lot of manufacturers carry over their older engines sometimes unchanged perhaps to give that particular buyer the piece of mind. If it ain't broke don't fix it?

      @dawiepieterse9703 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@stevegordon-hall2732 the dmax got a 10kW/70 Nm bump after they revised the engine. So it's really not a complete carry-over. Some manufacturers take the same engines and carry over to next generation and only bump the power up mid lyfe cycle (ze Germans). But I've seen Toyota reuse the 2.7L and 4.0L petrol engines for ages in different chassis. Obviously they do revisions here and there. Expensive to make all new engines. I mean if VW and Ford will share the same platform in the future it's not too far fetched for a manufacturer to use revised an older engine for a new model. And manufacturers have to update their products even if it's reliable. The world changes. Emissions regulations has to be adhered to. The competition moves along.

    The problem with this type of 4wd is, apart from being prone to abuse, is that you cannot manoeuvre your 3.5 ton trailer in low first or low reverse on sealed surfaces, such as around a steep yard. Also there is no way to pull out of a junction up a hill while heavy towing in low range and then switch to high range on the go. You have to stop and wait on the major road, which might be a fast and busy road, while the electric motor slowly changed from low to high and then do a standing start. That is a massive disadvantage even compared to their old Trooper/Bighorn which has a lever range change which actually had a brilliant synchromesh between low and high range and was a cinch to shift seamlessly on the move.

      Toyota NZ showing Honda Aust how a good agency model should and does work - make sure your non negotiable pricing factors in the typical discounts prior.
      Across the board Toyota NZ’s pricing undercuts all it’s mainstream competitors - like in this case at Least 10k less (and currently almost impossible to get a discount on a Ranger or D-max)

      Isuzu tend to make two types of engines. Very reliable great engines and absolutely horrendous engines. Over the last 25 years the majority have been an absolute disaster. Their 1980’s direct injection 2.8 was great and the 3.1 indirect was reliable and smooth but thirsty. That was replaced in the Trooper/Bighorn by the disastrous 3.0 high pressure direct injection which went well until so many grenaded. There have been some OK engines since but the 1.9 current engine sent to Europe is a turd.

      Hello mate. Sorry about the confusion! That bit should have been on the section about disabling lane departure warning. It was a mistake during the review process. Sorry about the confusion! At this stage they don’t have any plans on adding a 360 camera.

    There are other wheels but they're an extra that you have to pay for. Also, the sidesteps are surprisingly tough. I've landed the whole car's weight on those sidesteps and, while you can see it's not perfectly straight anymore, they're not obviously damaged either. Still recommend getting rock sliders, as I would recommend for anyone off-roading. In terms of how the car's going, it's going very well! There's an annoying buzz from somewhere in the centre of the dashboard which is starting to drive me a little mad, will have to take apart the dash to figure that one out, but otherwise, I absolutely love the car in almost every way and it's certainly the nicest and best car I've ever owned. I don't think the new Ranger is cause for concern unless they're priced more competitively because the X-Terrain is still the most affordable high-end ute available.

    Also side note - with road tests when talking about noise, can you get one of those decibel-o-meter things? I mean you have the duro-meter for the soft surfaces. I think it would be a much better comparison of how loud a car actually is when just driving and when accelerating, otherwise "not bad, fairly quiet, or a little bit of road noise but not too much" isn't really much to compare.

    I prefer the D-Max smaller horizontal screen to the Ranger new larger and vertical screen. However, it isn't a deal breaker. As for D-Max versus Ranger more generally, it all comes down to price. I am expecting Ford to do a Toyota and increase prices substantially, which will take some of the gloss off the shiny new Ranger. I am waiting for the Everest and it will be first choice, but not at any price. Only Toyota has that sort of fanboy.
