Isuzu D-Max 2021 review: X-Terrain long-term - What’s it like to live with a dual-cab ute?

  • The Isuzu D-Max has a rapidly growing legion of fans and for good reasons: it looks good, drives well, is capable off-road and has plenty of driver-assist tech.
The line-up's top-shelf variant, the X-Terrain, packs quite a lot into its price-tag and demand is booming.
Is this the best D-Max ever?
We've had an X-Terrain on our test fleet for three months to see how it'd do as a daily driver, weekend tourer and off-road adventure machine, and as its time with us drew to a close we took this ute for a drive into the bush for a full rundown on its.

I have had the new Dmax Xterrain for approx 4 months and driven over 10k kms mainly travelling from our house in Sydney to our farm South of Bathurst, which includes a reasonable amount of dirt roads. In general, I agree with the review. Drives really well, comfortable for both front & rear passengers. My annoyances are relatively minor. Main ones are as follows (1) lack of tie down points in the tub, (2) No separate key for the tail gate, so have to eject from the key fob. (3) media unit is as he described in the review, which requires you to hit the screen buttons a few times on occassions and is potentially dangerous. I also have a radar failure fault that has appeared so will have to take back to the dealer, although everything still seems to work OK. It is the first ute I have owned, and would not hesitate to recommend it as it does most things well.... With the main issue for me being the lack of tie down points in the tub. Hope this helps others considering the Dmax.

Hey Matt, the lack of tie downs is annoying for sure ,but an easy fix, I've had several installed including a few rails. HSP also make a brilliant tailgate lock kit which integrates the tailgate lock to the rest of the central locking system ,, Kit costs around $250, installed around $350

Using your supplied key get a hard key cut at your local locksmith for the tailgate. It won't start your engine however put it with the one for the shutter and you have keys in the vehicle without disturbing the OE Key. Leave the OE key in the cabin to save a lot of wear and tear and keep it away from the crap in the back.

I’ve had X terrain for 7 months now, and as you mentioned screen has deffinetly has some sort of glitch , radio or apple car play button keeps freezing occasionally. Ive mentioned that to my Isuzu service but they refused to do anything as I was told that didn’t happen to anyone else, thats at my Caloundra Pacific Isuzu ute service.
Also had an issue with a tonneau cover , kept opening up, long story short after very long and painful warranty process managed to get a change. Great looking ute but a very bad customer serviced few errors.

I've run a D-Max 3 Litre Turbo for 11 years from new in Thailand. It's the 2WD, not 4WD, but apart from occasional excursions on rough ground or tracks, which it's handled perfectly well, I don't really need 4WD. The power is good enough for any traffic situations, and it's an extremely comfortable tourer. I have an electric-powered lid on the back which is brilliant, and over the years we've carried tons of building or gardening stuff with no problem. Up to a year ago it was utterly reliable, then developed a fault on the engine management system which took the dealers a long time to fathom out, but since then it's been ok. The only thing I really don't like is the dreadful turning circle, we have to do lots of u-turns here and I have to be very careful sometimes to judge getting round. All in all, I'm happy with it.

I have the last generation Dmax so good to see the no locker / abysmal traction control issue is now fixed. More tie downs is needed with tub, tho mine has alu tray so non issue. What was mentioned about tyres and clearance is the same for all Utes from the show room. You're going to get low hanging steps that scrape with any speccy model ute. If you're into 4wding you take them off. So all those sorts of issues aren't particular to the dmax.

Owned ours for 6 months and overall it’s good once you refine some of the issues with the tub as you mentioned. The main gripe I have is the epic fail with the IDAS. You have to turn it all off every time you’re towing after start the car again. We did a trip up to the NT with our caravan and what a PIA IDAS was turning all off several times a day. Would manufacturers like Mercedes, Land Rover or Toyota expect customers to do that? Dont thinks so.

Until it arrives and I can test it, the only gripe I have is that it is only available in 1 colour here in Australia. I have had a look at the colour schemes available in both Thailand and Malaysia and there are choices. I like choices.

Well, apparently I misunderstood that the orange is only available in the X-Terrain, not that the X-Terrain is only available in orange. Even so, the black and red racing stripe version that you can get in Malaysia but not here is better than the basic black you can get here.

My new LS-U is great absolutely love it but it is too low, the tyres are ordinary, hopeless in the mud I’ve got Goodyear wranglers on it now after a puncher within in the first 2 weeks of owning it, the driver aids are great but I hate the lane perversion as it pulls on the steering wheel while driving and I turn it off every time I start it which is a pain, otherwise it handles like it’s on rails and goes great 👍

I'm currently assessing Dual Cab utes at the moment, drove the Dmax, New Navara, Ranger Wildtrak, & the SR5 Toyota, I'm currently driving an NP300 with 80k on the clock, due to be replaced in November
The Dmax has the best ride & most practice interior, if we order now supply with be Feb March (too late)
The Nissan NP300 STX, ride has stiffened up over the last model, much quieter to drive, although they have taken some key features out of the new model,
The Ranger has the worst interior but great tech,
The SR5 has a practical interior & drives really well, the 150kw engine is pretty good,
Pricing with quite a few accessories, (rounded off)
      Dmax 62k
      Ranger 69k
      Nissan 58k
      Hilux 67K
After Driving all my choice is,
Dmax 1 (if I could get one when we want it this would be the choice)
Toyota 2 (great reputation & you know its going to get good re-sale)
Ranger 3 (if it had the interior of the Dmax it would go to No1)
Nissan 4 (looks great but really disappointed with the features they have removed) + it's 14k more that the last model,
I rarely drive off road, most of the work is highway miles, towing boats for work, caravan for recreation.
They will all do the job, it just comes down to personal choice & availability,

    • @351tgv

It depends on use, as I said elsewhere the D-Max / BT50 twins are in general practice very good vehicles, reliability wise we have had a few things go wrong but that is what it is with new platform vehicles at the end of the day the Ranger is solid option as is Hilux but that said what it comes down to is what the vehicles purpose will be for your needs not wants.

not so good, we have 4 (2 D-Max and 2 BT50) and all 4 sadly have been back for warranty work, the D-Max ECCM failed on 1 and was told that if it fails again that the wait to repair would be close to 3 months and that the company would provide us with the pervious gen, the other one had transmission fail, new one put and it's been ok since then, on the BT50 side both electric steering motors replaced twice one on of them, while a mysterious fail in the BCM which is causing the vehicle to lock and unlock itself, Mazda senior tech rep could not find the issue so they replaced the entire wiring loom (not a cheap job around $12,000 from what I was told) but issue remain, we put a stop purchase on them after these 4 have let us down in a major way, now to be fair to both Isuzu and Mazda the actual vehicles in terms of general service duty are actually well designed and practical and much better then the GM Colorado they replaced and the driver have rated them highly for comfort and performance but as mentioned above these massive electric and machinal issues are enough to walk away from both brands and look elsewhere to replace the aging GM Colorado and Ford PX MkII Ranger fleet we have (and we are not buying Ranger until the new ones are released) so we have gone back to Nissan and so far the Series 4 Navara (we have 3) are performing well enough even though it's way to early to tell in terms of reliability.

Always a risk jumping in when a brand new gen vehicle released, regardless of manufacturer- usually takes at least 12 months for the issues to get discovered and mostly resolved. Being Isuzu, this Ute will be around for 10 years, and within a couple it will be reliable as previous gen ended up being.

Not enough tie down points and no slider tie down system (ala Navara). Roller shutter should've been electric or at least had it as an option. No heated seats like the bt50, no Auto dimming rear vision mirror like the bt50, I've also heard no heated side mirrors. So many utes are parked outside, having frosted mirrors is a pain let alone dangerous. An electric rear sliding window and sunroof option would've been nice. Rear diff and traction control off is dumb. No Auto park to go with the rest otlf the setup. Tow bar not standard. No 360 camera. Wait times. So many little things that would've had this leapfrog to the front by a mile and instead they do the bear minimum. 😔

Sorry to address the elephant in the room but the title says "What’s it like to live with a dual-cab ute?". Surely we'd mention the extremely long dimensions which makes parking a B*%&^ (as your ass sticks out of car parks), fuel consumption, the large turning circle, the lack of rear seat recline, the 'average' on road handling etc. Sure they are great at certain things....it's just that most people don't even use them how they were intended.

fuel consumption is not great, the turning circle of a 747 is nothing to boast about either, the rear seats are terrible and the road handling is as you describe. For what I need a vehicle for, I'm prepared to live with those compromises.
My number one complaint however is the tubs fitted on the various vehicles within the four door "crew cab" segment of the market. Firstly, the sides are so ridiculously high that you need to carry a ladder or climb into the back to retrieve anything from half the available luggage space toward the front of the tub. Secondly, carrying said ladder or anything of any length is impossible. Thirdly, wheel arches prevent loading up all number of items. Fourth on the list is that only front end loaders with tiny buckets can load them and fifth is that you can only shovel from the rear of the vehicle and sixth is that the rear seats are always full of "5h1t" and not the people that they were designed to carry! Seventh is the damage that paint work cops when using these as a daily work vehicle.
Crew cab tubs are a lot less practical than people seem to think they are.

My ls-m is almost 7 months old and just under 30000 km. Wish I'd never seen it.fuel consumption is poor, engine transmission relationship is rubbish with the thing changing gear much more than it needs too which I believe is the problem with the fuel consumption. Cant use cruise control in manual gear selection mode. The driver assist especially lane keep assist is dangerous, I've had the dealer turn this permanently off as it yanked me towards an oversize load one night narrowly missing it.
It is so rough its not funny, it has destroyed a set of driving lights on the bullbar actually causing the mounting brackets to fail. I want to try an x terrain for comparison but at this stage I am unlikely to ever buy a Isuzu again, previous Amarok was 10 times the ute this is.

Maybe I’ll demo a x terrain but it will need to be a massive improvement.
I can’t see the engine gearbox relationship being any different though and that is it’s biggest failure I reckon

Before anyone spends $60,000 on these pimped out Barbie-campers; make you you read all your warranty and manufacturing statistics and information - especially the weight Kilo limitations that the roof can hold. I see many of these barbie campers with after market roof racks, and roof tents, which exceeds the manufacturing specifications - if something happens, you have just voided all your warranty. These vehicles are specifically manufactured to be "light Commercial" vehicles that can double as a sedan - NOT be up-graded to mimic mountain goats.

A lot of talk with little facts. Would have liked to seen more statistics on how many sold, how many warranty claims and for what reasons compared to other utes. What problems to look out for. A review on a single vehicle is not a good sample size statistically. Please do more factual research.

    • @devilsadvocate2548
      @devilsadvocate2548 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Considering the vehicle hasn't even been out for 12 months yet you'd struggle to get the kind of data (warranty claims/problems) you're asking for that would provide an effective enough distinction between what would be 'early production teething issues' or more longer term problems. The sample size and 'time in the wild' are not yet at the levels where you could hang your hat on that data.
