@@UMBR.the only way I got one manager to back down was by telling her I was at the other end of the country until my next scheduled shift. I would be perfectly happy to come in, however she would need to pay for a taxi. Uber gave a quote of £350.
She gave me an earful because apparently her manager had to cover the shift. Not my problem, I make minimum wage.

Just called HR when they wanted me to do some trainings off the clock, so everyone can finish them early, before the due date. HR sent managers a friendly reminder that trainings are supposed to be done only at work, and that anyone asks an employee to work off the clock is subject to PIP or termination.

I had a toxic boss who would ignore major issues. Like I worked with kids, we had kids that would attack their teachers, other students, run out of school, and destroy school property. I ve had chairs thrown at me, been punched, kicked, spat on, body slammed to the ground, screamed at, cussed out, so many things! If I told my boss or showed in the least bit that I was stressed I would either get told “ this is just what we deal with, if u can’t handle it maybe u shouldn’t work here” or I was written up.
I was written up for disrespectful body language because I wasn’t smiling while dealing with horrendous behaviors. How should I have responded to that?
Keep in mind this was a regular school. I was not specifically working with groups of children with special needs. When I applied I did not expect me being hurt to be almost a daily occurrence.

Work: I need you to pick up the 7A to 7P Friday.
    Me: no

I’d ask for clarification of why the boss felt the need to word it that way. I’d let them know they have options, but it’s not my personal time that’s theirs to claim they “ need.”

Work hard, go in on time, call out sick only when absolutely necessary and make yourself valuable by delivering top notch work. Then it’s pretty easy to neutralize a toxic boss just by standing your ground and being firm. I’ve also found that if your boss is not the owner or owner’s child, then do THEIR job better than they do and take their job away from them. I did this five times over 40 years and retired early. Never tolerate a toxic boss.

  • @melissa5891

I'm a frequent concert attender, I so feel this on many levels.
My previous job always got furious when I took time off, no matter the reason, yes this includes being sick as well.
I work now at a way better place where they try helping me as much as possible. But I had a bad experience too. I usually work on Mondays. Which is usually no problem. However, I had a concert on a Monday in September, in my hometown (multiple hours away) and would have a friend stay over for the night at my parents' place. I had asked specifically this Monday and Tuesday off for it, which got approved months in advance. But they needed someone to cover a shift the Monday and immediately contacted me. I refused because I had this planned forever. They called me on my phone, texted me and were saying stuff like: "but you always work Mondays!" And so on. I told them I had this off for months already, so wasn't available. It had some backlash but well, their problem, not mine.

I worked in media for over a decade and a half. Careful with recording. That could be a slippery slope. If you are working in a two-consent state, and they don’t give you their consent to record them, the company could bring on a pretty nasty lawsuit against you.
Taking copious notes on the other hand, the company can’t do anything about that. Heck, even ask the manager to sign it acknowledging what they are doing. Then, signed or not, note down the time, date, and location and then take a picture of it with your phone right away to get the time stamp. #TricksOfTheJournalismTrade

    Me: No
Boss: Do you have plans? (In an arrogant tone)

I used to do the same thing as a manager when extremely short staffed, I would ask super nicely and would completely understand if they said no or showed any sign of hesitation. Most of the time they would stay to help out but I never would make them feel bad for leaving if they chose to.
