I remember seeing your grandfather using this plane to make bee hives. He was a great gardener, keep bees in the hives he make. Granddad would be be proud that you are going to use it with the hobby and job that you love. I know i am.
I'm going to watch this very carefully, because I have a Stanley no. 4 that belonged to My grandfather and it needs restoring too. This couldn't be more perfect!
Beautiful tool. A few years ago I bought one of the same brand; but where I live (Argentina), you can only get Stanley`s handplanes made in India; and the difference in quality is very great, compared with those made in England. I flattened and sharpened it correctly; but I was never able to get wood chips as fine as you have made. Congratulations and thanks for the video.
I've heard of the Indian Stanley's, sorry to hear that yours won't perform for you. I've had a few planes that just refused to cooperate too, I hope you'll find one that works for you
I just inherited my Grandfather's Stanley No 6 plane that my dad said he remembers him using back in the 1940's when he was a kid . The rear handle is broken in half but it is all still there and I plan to glue it back together and restore the plane and display it . It is the only thing I have that belonged to my Grandfather .
That plane is a precious thing, then. I don't have a whole lot from mine, so I treasure what I have and especially those things that I can use in daily life. I also have a lovely Stanley no.71 router plane of his and a hide mallet that was my other grandad's and a few other bits and bobs
Looks great! Bit of inspo to tidy up some of mine I think. Do you ever have any issues where the screws holding the handles continue to loosen themselves? I dont want to constantly try to over tighten them, next step is to try some locktite but wondering if others had better fixes...
Thanks, I hope you get around to sorting your own ones out. I don't have that issue, I'm afraid. I guess a drop of Locktite would work, but I'd be worried about the removability after that. I'm assuming your screws are the correct length and not too short for the handle? I've seen that before where it's impossible to tighten the screw enough due to the handle shrinking over time

Love the flamed maple on the handle! Hopefully the plane will have much more history with you, but not too many more battle scars ;-)

@@AwenLutherieCustomGuitars ill have to double check the screw length vs handle size, I could easily sand some off the bottom if that was the case.
what did you use to initially clean with please?
It's an isopropyl alcohol cleaner. I wanted to try and get as much grease and grime off the japanning before repainting and this was close at hand
