You're absolutely right about the 3D process being a problem for the 4k. Of the three 80s films. I've always felt that Jaws 3 looked the worst in 2D. Most of that caused by only the left eye image being used to when making the 2D transfer. That clearly leaves out half of the image quality, reducing the clarity of the image and making the effects look even worse. lol There were a few different 3D filming techniques used at the time, so I don't know what Amityville and F13 used, but they don't seem to suffer as much when converted as Jaws 3 does.
Glad you covered this. I’ve heard several boutique labels talk about how the elements for some films wouldn’t hold up to 4K. I guess Universal disagreed 😂 I regularly use Topaz to do video upscaling, and if you ask it to generate detail and aren’t careful those are the exact faces you get lol
Eeeeeeexactly. I've seen people upscale way worse quality and avoid these artifacts, even if (due to the low quality input material) it comes out looking 'painterly'.
I still might pick these up, as long as they include the original Blu-rays with them. I wasn't able to get the original Blu-ray releases, and the one for Jaws 3 is out of print, so this could be my chance. If they're not included, then no dice. Edit: Oh, okay. Thanks for clarifying that the old Blu-Rays are included. My mistake.
Im so glad you said what you said about AI and how we just want the real image presented in the best possible natural quality. Collectors arent obsessed with the artificial sharpness that Cameron and studios seem to think we are, in fact we will reject these AI upscales. We really shouldn't support these AI products though otherwise it tells the studios that we are fine with it and encourages to use it more. I dont care how "good" this AI tech gets for sharpening and upscaling it has literally no place in film restoration or 4k discs whatsoever and should never have been used and should not be used in the future. If it was shot on film and theses film to scan and remaster in 4k then we don't need or WANT AI interpreted upscales or "enhancements". I am also glad in the way that you sdaid that we arent really watching Jaws 3 and its not really the picture of Jaws 3, as this is exactly what I have been saying, What we are looking at is o longer the film but a computer's interpretation of it and no matter which way you look at it this whole process is wrong. I am sick and tired of seeing AI get a foothold in physical media because in the end if ever new studio 4k disc turns to using AI then simply collectors and cinephiles will reject them and not buy them and if that continues then at the very least Studio Physical Media will die and very possibly the whole Physical Media industry could collapse. The use of AI Enhancing and sharpening in 4k film restorations is something we should all know about and all FIGHT together as a community. It is wrong and only serves to save these Billion Dollar companies some money, as they are saving money upscaling old transfers instead of doing real restorations. I didn't buy Aliens and I will be skipping this as well, I think it is something we should all do, otherwise the future for 4k will be AI and everyone will be worse off for it.
1980's 3D movies were usually filmed by splitting the 35 mm frame into 2 pictures. So the picture has half its usual film space. Essentially making it like 16mm quality. The 3D would usually compensate but 4K lies this bare.
I remember as a kid during this same time period, at least in New Orleans, once a month on Friday they would televise an old classic 3D movie It was a big deal all the gas stations had the 3D glasses for sale and each time before the movie they would show u how to calibrate ur TV for the 3D experience. To show you how much it affected me I’m 52 years old now and I can still remember that time. It truly was very cool
I have a projector that does 3D (which is the BEST way to do 3D, BTW) and, truth be told, Jaws 3 actually looks pretty fantastic in its native 3D. No need to get this 4K. I already have the best version.
All I want in a 4k is preservation and representation of the theatrical experience to the best of their ability without changing the movie. They could spend 5 minutes on an intro talking about why the quality is subpar due to 3D rather then whatever they spent to upscale it.
I have it in 3D Blu-ray and even then some of the effects don’t work but watching it in 3D as it was intended is very cool. Watching this in a ‘fake’ 4K doesn’t really excite me.
I have the standard Jaws 3 4K release in the UK and on the back cover it says bonus feature jaws 3 on Blu Ray but theres no actual blu ray included in the UK box , just the 4K disc, so whoever was responsible for the UK packaging messed up as apparently they never intended to include the 3D blu ray 🙄
I watched this on Peacock a couple weeks ago in 4k and it looked pretty good imo, granted i wasnt examining every detail either so idk if its the same print as the 4k bluray.
I just watched this 4k yesterday, & i gotta say all these "youtubers" & redditors" are completely over reacting on this!. You can not see these ghoul faces, unless you pause the movie & zoom in on the backround! Most people do not watch movies like this, so they wont see it. The 4k got rid of the "glow" around the actors from the blu ray. (Which was one of the biggest problems of this release previously). Im really starting to wonder if these "youtubers, & redditors", actually watch these releases, or just follow the heard!
Hey CHH, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I don't support AI in any film restoration, but to be honest, I do find the UHD to blow the existing blu out of the water. The yellow and blue ghosting around images on both sides is almost completely eliminated. Things are still kind of soft, but likely inherent to the source. And the excessive, chunky grain has been refined. Colors are stronger and the framing is has been corrected. I wish the AI was applied much more judiciously because of its own set of issues you mentioned, but at the end of the day, when I want to watch the film in 2D, I'll never reach for the old blu. And glad to see you have some love for Jaws the Revenge. Looking forward to your review (although that release has several audio issues).
I have one and two in 4K. Those are the only two that I need. While I do like three and four, I really don’t need them in 4K. After hearing that part three is a science experiment gone wrong, I’m definitely not picking it up, I’ll stick with the Blu-ray.
Sea World probably figured no such thing as bad publicity. Companies were like that in the 70s and 80s. For example, the 1977 Robert Shaw thriller “Black Sunday.” That flick is about a terrorist plot to crash and explode the Goodyear blimp in the stadium hosting the Super Bowl. Not only did the NFL allow the filmmakers to shoot footage of the real Super Bowl, Goodyear allowed the use of one of their blimps to be portrayed as a floating bomb (their only condition was the logo stay hidden on the poster and print ads. But the Goodyear logo was on full display in the movie).
The first two films are worthy of the upgrade, 4K looks amazing. The third and fourth installments in this series, we're both atrocious and I really don't put much credibility in either of those titles. The first 2 films make one movie for me and the third 1. I have on blu-ray. I watch it Once in a Blue Moon and the fourth film, I absolutely despise Thank you via review along with others. I will save my money for a more worthy release
@PlanetCHH ??? Yes the 3d version in the special features of the Blu-ray. The 2d standard HD version is one of the worst HD movies out there. I don't think you've seen very many 4k movies because I can think of handful off the top of my head that have a worse 4k transfer. This movie at least can use the excuse of 3d cameras but movies like the 84 Ghostbusters have no excuse for their terrible 4k transfer. I'd take this over the standard Blu-ray and all day over Ghostbusters 84 4k.
Nothing will ever touch the original, but Jaws 3 is a favorite of mine. It's one of those,"it's so bad,it's good" type movies. Yes,it's goofy and the effects are horrible, but it's such a great slice of 80's nostalgic cheese!
Even with the AI, I do not think it is unwatchable. The average person is not going to notice it. I was actually impressed with the overall transfer. Depth, details, color saturation. Then I popped in the Blu-Ray and WOW...what a piece of garbage! You say it would have been better if they did the standard 4K restoration. But IMO, we would have bitched about it not being perfect. So a lose-lose situation for Universal.
What annoys me as a life long Jaws fan is that part three has i believe never had the remastering process that the first film received prior to its 2012 blu ray release which i have where they highlight how they did the restoration in a special feature piece. All three subsequent films need the same process. Ive had almost every video version since discovision, vhs and beta releases in 1978 which i still have and jaws 3 has never gotten the restoration treatment. The cameras they used back then made it look terrible on many formats esp laserdisc. Even my amityville trilogy boxed sets including part 3 looks way better than Jaws 3. Im a big fan of studio canal who are remastering alot of their catalog apparently.
You guys don’t realize the original negative was burnt up in a fire so the only negative they could work off was the 3-D negative so what do you want it too look like 🤦
I've heard rumours that Jaws 4 is a true remaster. If it is, as I said on your insta post, I'll be buying it brand new, but Jaws 3 will be one i get from a secondhand store.
This is why some old cheesy classics like jaws 3D and tcm 74' or any grind house era kind of horror films don't need the 4k treatment.. cause it just ruins the look of things and exposes all the tricks and mistakes made as a result ruins the nostalgia factor
Gotta be honest.... this one release has completely put me off 4K. Unless its a boutique label I can trust not to use AI, I am steering clear. More than happy with the DVDs and Blus.

Are you buying the 4k Steelbook of Return of the Living Dead? I have the Bluray release. I also have the 4k! Pre-ordered the Steelbook as soon as I heard about it.
Save yourself the headache and just get a 3D projector and player. That way you can share the experience with others. Plus, regular films look great, as well!
I have the Blu-ray box set of JAWS 2-THE REVENGE for $10 new ONLY because it had 2, as that was still a decent movie, where as 3 and the revenge were not that good. I'm not going to spend extra bucks to get the shittiest of the sequels on 4k.
I would just like a simple 3d presentation. Like Friday 3. Give us the old school blue and red glasses and let us relive the experience without having to buy a 3d TV and player.
Yes, people in the '80s were quite ugly and homely looking. This 4k blu ray just took the image to a whole new level. Those people didn't need the extra help! 😆
It’s not as good as Jaws 1 and Jaws 2. It’s BETTER! “JAWS 3-D” was awesome in the theatres, you should have been there to see it - fantastic 3-D photography. And it looks wonderful on Blu Ray 3-D. Try it. 🥰😉😎👻
Jaws is a masterpiece. Jaws 2 is a fun, entertaining, slasher with a shark type flick. Jaws 3 and 4, however, I honestly don’t think you could pay me to watch either of them again.
@@ilkvomit88 Very eloquent argument. so, the animals were killling people for no reason? The environment they were prisoners in had nothing to do with it?
People really need to stop trying to harp on the AI thing, its the hip kewl thing to cry about AI BUT......The faces highly likely have nothing to do with the AI and just have to do with Jaws 3D was never meant to be in 4k....The effects look like coloforms playsets because its a 3D movie upscaled to 4k and weren't meant to. Those "terrible faces" were there in the Jaws 3D blu-ray from a decade ago its not because of AI or those faces wouldn't have existed then. Your taking a 3D movie that always looked like garbage and your trying to make it 4k. The movie has never looked good because of the 3D. IF anything Jaws 3D is a prime example of NO not everything is meant to be 4k and maybe we should just be OK with a 1080p blu-ray.
No one thinks Jaws 3 was good, bro be real, are you trying to gaslight or punk us…Steven Spielberg director of the original, will never even let Jaws be bundled with those sequels.
Who gives a shit what Spielberg thinks, this is the same guy who replaced the shot guns with walkie talkies in the re-release of E.T., executive produced JP3 (not much better than Jaws 3) and produced Indy 5. He's one to talk.
“This a hold up?!..it’s a science experiment!”
Jaws 3 walked so that Jurassic Park could run...
Those faces.....nightmare fuel. Reminds me of an Evanescence music video to "Going Under"....
Would you have even noticed them without this video? Be honest.
Jaws 3 has the best 3D I've ever seen, I thought there was a real shark in the room 🤥

The transfer sint as bad as they said. JAWS 3-D was the 1st Jaws movie I watched as a kid too. Love it.
Jaws 3 in 3D on 2009 Panasonic Plasma 3D TV is the only way to view it. It was a 3D movie not 4K. Friday 13th 3 in 3D is cool too on my 3D TV.

I know it's not saying much... But it's this the best it's ever looked considering the BR was also bad?
There’s varying opinions on this. I can’t definitively say
and yes ive seen all those films you mentioned and the 3d looks god awful
Yes, people in the '80s were quite ugly and homely looking. This 4k blu ray just took the image to a whole new level. Those people didn't need the extra help! 😆
I'm good with my vhs
It’s not as good as Jaws 1 and Jaws 2. It’s BETTER! “JAWS 3-D” was awesome in the theatres, you should have been there to see it - fantastic 3-D photography. And it looks wonderful on Blu Ray 3-D. Try it. 🥰😉😎👻
Jaws is a masterpiece. Jaws 2 is a fun, entertaining, slasher with a shark type flick. Jaws 3 and 4, however, I honestly don’t think you could pay me to watch either of them again.
Jaws The Revenge is funny bad.
Jaws 3 is just bad.
@@suttercane6 I don’t even think it’s entertaining in any “so bad it’s good” way. It’s just dumb and boring.
I love both Jaws 3 and Jaws 4.
@@suttercane6jaws 4 I watch just to see jake get devoured..best part of the movie
First of all... How the hell did you get a copy with a slip cover? I'm jealous lol. Stupid Amazon Canada🤬
Worse than Terminator 2?
Way Worse in my opinion....
I didn't think the transfer was that bad. I mean you'd REALLY have to look HARD to notice much. I think you're just being too hard on it.
The killer whales harming humans was not the point of Blackfish. It was the humans harming the animals.
Yeah, the purpose was that they were harming humans in response to their treatment. Without the trainers dying, Black Fish would've never been made.
@@ilkvomit88 Very eloquent argument.
so, the animals were killling people for no reason? The environment they were prisoners in had nothing to do with it?
This comment actually made me go back and rewatch blackfish.
@@PlanetCHH sorry for the derailment.
I can tell you definitely commented this before watching all the way. I talk exactly all about the fact that it was filmed in 3D.
This is my hate comment.
jaws 3 and 4 did not need a 4k release imo
All 4 Jaws suck!! So overated! Such slow movies 👎
No one thinks Jaws 3 was good, bro be real, are you trying to gaslight or punk us…Steven Spielberg director of the original, will never even let Jaws be bundled with those sequels.
I think Jaws 3 is decent.
Who gives a shit what Spielberg thinks, this is the same guy who replaced the shot guns with walkie talkies in the re-release of E.T., executive produced JP3 (not much better than Jaws 3) and produced Indy 5. He's one to talk.
3 is awesome.unbind your panties and give it another watch
