This is the type of stuff I love. Just talking about back in the days experiences etc. Some collector TH-camrs are all about "look what I got, look what I got", and never really talk about movies and the times. You're channel is the best imo. Have a great wknd man ✌🏻
I love this! You're two of my favorite channels and consider you both inspirations for my little channel. And I'm an old guy closing in on 50! It's great to hear this conversation and great stories.
Man, listening to Pizowell's early beginnings brings back memories. We were very similar in some regards. I had a HUGE VHS collection that I eventually completely replaced. I still have a few VHS tapes left though.
I definitely remember grocery stores having video sections. Skagway grocery store had an entire separate building on the opposite side of the parking lot...Skagway Video. Our best video stores were Video Kingdom, Video Warehouse, and Skagway. Long gone! Awesome show!!!
I remember my youngest memory as a child with movies (I was about 4 or 5 years old), was going into my parents room where they kept all of their vhs tapes lined up on the dresser. They had maybe 30 tapes at that time. Me and Dad would go in there to find a movie to watch and take it into the Living Room to watch. Among the tapes on that shelf were titles like Bloodsport, Kickboxer, and Children of The Corn. God, I miss those days. I could go on and on talking about this stuff.
remember video section in grocery stores. owned vhs, started collecting in the 90s, bunch of disney titles being born in the mid 80s. first dvd The Spy Who Loved Me in 1999. remember people complaining about black bars for the longest time.. didn't change to blu-ray till The Criterion Collection changed and I had collecting Criterions since 2000. its nice to still have old physical media releases. Pioneer's steelbook of Akira was one of the first movies i really remember hunting down hard.
I remember seeing the VHS for Santa with Muscles, a Hulk Hogan movie that was in my local 20 auditorium movie theater for one day only, with a MSRP of $79.99 and thinking that was insane. Even at the time, I didn't want to pay $5 for it. This was in maybe 1997, so we weren't used to seeing those kinds of prices.
Loving these conversations and long form content. Shorts and quick videos have their place, but this is the type of content I look forward to from my favorite creators. By the way, I believe they’re pronounced Deevadees, not DVDs 😉 🤣😂🤣 🤘📀🤘
I found horror movies for the first time in the win Dixie here in Nashville..13th and nightmare was my first rentals in around 87/88 as a kid...man so many great memories
Great interview. I was a VERY late adopter of blu-ray because I'd only had hand-me-down CRT TVs for most of my adult life which were fine for VHS & DVD. It wasn't until 2016 that I had my first HDTV, a 1080i Sony Trinitron CRT from the early 2000s, another hand-me-down from a family member who'd graduated to plasma (that thing weighs a TON!) Even then, I didn't know how to use the HDMI cable until a few years later when my wife bought a blu-ray by accident thinking it was a DVD, so she bought used Samsung blu-ray player online because I was still convinced it was a marketing scam to get us to double dip on movie purchases. But when we watched that blu-ray, that's when I really noticed the benefits of HD. Since then, in the past 5 years, I've been going wild upgrading everything to blu-ray and also upgraded to a 70" 4K TV I got on clearance at Best Buy. At 45 yrs old, it was the first time in my life I'd ever paid for a new TV. Ha!
Loved this. I do miss the local corner shops that rented VHS in the late 80s/90s- their horror selection was so much more diverse than Blockbuster, who took over and made everything so bland. I spent a small fortune renting NOES 3 and 4 in particular! Good times.
Buying the E.T movie on VHS was an EVENT lol we got it at midnight day of release was so exciting to own a VHS tape when I was a kid. Fun fact - E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial* was released on VHS on October 27, 1988. The film was priced at $24.95, which was the lowest price at the time for a major movie, and became the best-selling videocassette ever.
A little late to comment but I’m loving the longer form content Christian I work 2 jobs everyday and im miserable and the longer videos get me through the week and give me something to look forward to so thank you.
I knew Blu-ray would easily win that format war the minute it was announced that the PS3 was going to be a Blu-ray player, and then they did that 6 movie giveaway where everyone got Spider-Man 3 and then you got an order form to pick 5 more Blu-rays for free, like Chain Reaction and such. I picked the 5 most expensive selling eBay movies from that list and sold almost all of them because I needed it to help subsidize the cost of my PS3 at the time.
I think the first US released DVD was Twister in March of '97. There were a bunch of reasonably priced sell through VHS I recall from the early 90s. These include Disney films like Little Mermaid, Beauty & the beast, Lion King, and Aladdin. Every kid had those back then. Also Die Hard 2, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Lethal Weapon 2, Jurassic Park, and Back to the future parts 2+3, and Terminator 2. I think most of those you could buy for 30 or less from places like Toys r us, Suncoast, tower records, etc.
Great discussion guys! 8k for gaming. Although there is no doubt that we are witnessing a definite decline, we’re also in a golden age of incredible releases:) Sorry you missed out on that second site set. If I had a spare I’d definitely send it your way
I must come to Twilight Time's defense here. The only release that was really messed up was "Night of the Living Dead", they didn't do new transfers they just worked with what they were given, so you can't really blame them exactly. And yes they were more expensive like $30, but not $50.
Great conversation CHH! Big fan of Piz. I worked at Suncoast from 2002-2005 while in college which was the heyday of Anchor Bay. Suncoast, Sam Goody and Musicland were all owned by the same company. No disrespect to Piz but he isn’t completely accurate about Twilight Time. Most of the releases were $29.99 and I bought a bunch of their titles and never had one issue. Their model was different they basically signed a deal up front with the studios for a set number so that’s why they were limited. The owner has since passed away but he did a great interview on Shock waves and Pure cinema podcast.
Thanks for the fun conversation, Christian! Long live physical media!
Long live the Sunday night streams also 👍

I can remember renting videos at the local Village Pantry and vending machines in the mall back in the 80s!
Alot of Suncoast stores charged full MSRP for their DVDs. $29.99-$39.99 on a bunch of their stuff.

I relate so much to Piz where I get an immeasurable amount of anxiety whenever I buy a new release. Like... Where the hell is this gonna go?! 🤣

My first Blu-Ray, Iron Man. Bought it at Best Buy. My fist DVD's - The People vs Larry Flynt and Leaving Las Vegas.

Suncoast video was my go to when I collected VHS

Twister was the first DVD I remember getting. I get a little tickle knowing that it's coming out on 4k this summer too
I think the first US released DVD was Twister in March of '97.

I remember renting all 4 psycho movies on vhs from dierbergs grocery store back in the day it was rent one get one free
excellent podcast, my theory with 8k is they will be streaming only at first and then come to physical in 7-10 years
I got Return of the Living Dead on VHS for 10 bucks from my local grocery store back in the early 90's
Someone should do a documentary on Anchor Bay.

No
SUNCOAST.......FACTS!
when you said "Blu-ray" and "CRT" in the same sentence, did you mean "DVD"?
No I meant crt. I watched my
Halloween 3 with a blu ray player through a Sony CRT lol
@PlanetCHH yeah original Blu-ray players used to be red, white and yellow.🤔
@@PlanetCHH wow, I would've thought by the time they made Blu-ray players, HDMI would've been the standard.
