- April 14, 1996. The Sabres play their final game at The Aud, beating the Hartford Whalers 4-1. A post game tribute and farewell was given to honor Sabres past greats and the Aud itself. Sabres past greats and current players skate one last time on the Aud ice, ending with one last goal and sound of the horn by Pat Lafontaine.

This brings tears to my eyes every single time I watch this.
We Sabres fans are a unique breed, we never give up, we never give in, we have fans that are willing to do anything to get this team to the promise land.
You can keep knocking us down, but we'll keep getting back up!
Sabres For Life.
If there is any franchise that deserves a cup it is Buffalo !!
Who else thinks it's time for the return of the classic Sabre Dance theme?
@don cherry the song was just played dumb ass
Whenever I hear the chant LETS GO BUFFALO I know that I am watching a Sabres home game. I listened to the last game on WGR 550 while I was studying for a test. I don't remember how well I did on the test but I sure do remember the game like it was yesterday. Growing up in Southern Ontario you get lots of Sabres and Leafs games on the radio and tv. I was at the Aud in 1995 with my Mom and we had a good look around the building. Sabres fans sure know how to party, just like fans of the Islanders
and Rangers. What can I say New York in the state of hockey.
Lafontaine, what class! Waving to the crowd before the final horn. Nicely done!
Still give me chills............Thanks.
As soon as patty tapped it in and the horn went off I did literally get chills too. I'm so happy I was old enough to have been there a bunch of times. My first game was against Pitt. They were loaded. Mario, jagr, Francis
The horn was legendary
I’m 19 years old, born and raised in buffalo and am of course a lifelong diehard Sabres fan. Kinda crazy to think that they’ve now been playing longer at HSBC than they did at the aud
Wow, that "LET'S GO BUFF-A-LO!" chant at the end was LOUD! Never heard a chant in any other arena that loud before.
You’ll never hear it in Crossroads/Marine Midland/HSBC/First Niagara/KeyBank simply because the acoustics are TERRIBLE with the height of the roof and the material it’s made from. The hell with a new stadium, but I could get behind a better designed arena.
the chant always brings me to tears here.
I have the entire game against the Whalers (Hartford) on tape. It's a rare treasure, and had a tear in my eye when LaFontaine gently placed the puck into the net, one last time. Classy move by a classy player. He was one of the finest ever to play the game.
Thanks so much for posting this. Sent shivers up and down my spine when the crowd started chanting, "Let's Go Buffalo". Great, spontaneous move by the fans.
I want the aud back. I loved walking into it as a kid. Felt intimate. My brother used to tease me and say if you sit in the orange you can fall over. I finally sat in the orange for a wrestling event and he wasn't kidding. Felt like it at least.
Not for the faint hearted those seats! Sat in the last row of those high corners and felt like we were on the roof looking down. I am sure many fans through the years got those seats and just left them when their noses started to bleed.
Brings a tear to my eye
gotta love the sound of that horn
Man, everytime i watch the ending of this it makes my spine tingle.after that final goal horn goes off, i feel like the era has ended. kinda hard to explain
i'm a hawks fan-and my second favorite team are the sabres. You guys have a wonderful franchise-back in the 90s we had old man Wirtz owning the hawks who, at the last game at the chicago stadium, just played a video and said THATS IT. What an awesome way to say goodbye! lets go buffalo!
When I found out how the Hawks closed The Madhouse, I was so disappointed. The Stadium was legendary and deserved a raucous send-off. Dollar Bill sure tried his best to alienate his fanbase.
Many thanks for this tribute to one of the grand old buildings of hockey. Buffalo seemed born to have an pro hockey team, and any true fan of the NHL has a place in his or her heart for the Sabres. They've been doing very well the past few years, and I think, under present leadership, it won't be long before the Sabres have their names etched on the Stanley Cup.
Thanks! I listin to this song every hour know!
wow, brought tears to my eyes...
I did so many innapriate things at that place. And I ain’t sorry for none of them! (A single tear. Thanks Pat. Classy)
Pat LAfontaine is a Beast
One of the best "Lets Go Buffalo" chants I've ever heard
i mean it sucks the aud is gone but this is one of my favorit hockey memories... they went out with such class
god those old uniforms look great.
teary eyed!
It should have been turned into the buffalo sports hof
The final farewell Buffalo Memorial Auditorium.
I'm only 17 but I have a lot of memories at The Aud. when I heard it was goin to be torn down, It was like having you're heart ripped out and stomped on. I'll deeply miss the Memorial Auditorium. It's good the Sabres put the classic logo on center ice this year to commemorate the Aud and it should be there forever. R.I.P Memorial Auditorium, goodbye my old friend, goodbye.
I was at this game. I remember I was one of the few people to leave right at the buzzer, concluding the game, because I was concerned since this happened on a Sunday night, after having two weeks off for Easter, and I had school the next day. My parents had a 45 minute drive to Lockport and I wanted to get home soon. I missed all the festivities.
Very cool. I was there. I'll never forget it.
RIP Rick
Rene too 😔
rest in peace rick martin
i'm getting all teary eyed :')
i made it there in november 1988 and march 1991....still have the program from both games...
Pete Weber, "There goes the horn for the final time....and there go the lights."
Hard to believe they're tearing it down this year!
yeah i got shivers when the crowd started chanting
It will truly be a sad day in Buffalo when the Aud is gone
We need a miracle to save it now
I was 10 years old... I was there front row possibly one of the greatest/saddest moments of my life.
wow loved it as a die hard sabres fan i will miss this place deaply and now its gone i have a shot of what it looks like in my vid Buffalo old now new
Knowing bass pro, they'd have to put up a memorial in front.
ON THIS GROUND ONCE STOOD THE HOME OF THE BUFFALO SABRES AND 18,000+ SCREAMING FANS FOR YEARS
good vid i was only 11 when we left the aud for hsbc
im not a sabres fan but this still sends chills through me
Awesome.
It's sad I'm 31 years old & lived here for 29,AND HAVE NEVER BEEN IN THE AUD FOR ANYTHING.Even sadder is the fact that there's nothing left except a Huge Hole in the ground.Last winter was heartbreaking, seeing that rink shaped hole filled in with ice...I really wish I could have been there, just once.
It still hard to think that the biulding is going to be demolished.
i was there in the lower golds...2 rows up.....still have my ticket stub!
Isn't Bass Pro going somwhere else on the Marina? If so, the Aud demolition site should be a Sabres monument.
Outside of the 99 finals, this has GOT to be the BEST Let's Go Buf-fa-lo chant EVER.
Go Sabres
Go Penguins
Go Stars
Go Blues
Go Wild
And when they come back
GO JETS GO!
@buffaloborn71 If i remember correctly Mike Wilson was a highly touted player/prospect , and he was supposed to be the future of the Sabres .
"There goes the horn for the final time. And there go the lights." - Rick Jeanneret
2008, Lord Stanley comes home to Buffalo!!!
the only one missing is Gil
I believe he was estranged from the team at this particular time. I can't remember why, its been awhile.
He was there earlier that season when they retired Rick Martin and Rene Robert's numbers.
@buffaloborn71 why indeed
Patty and May Day, though? Perfect!
Nice Video! I loved the goal horn, It is not the same in HSBC Arena
@LedZepp1193 You're right! It is from the ballet music called "Gayane" by Aram Khachaturian.
the sabres organization couldnt of thought of a better way to end one of the biggest parts of sabres history
Pat Lafontaine is a class guy..I was always sorry to see him leave the New York Islanders
It's the Sabre Dance, crushed!
And it's all ours!
great way to end the era of the aud..
Whats the name of the song? I JUST heard it watching The Simpsons Halloween speacial.
"Sabre Dance"
man you can smell the mold walking by the aud now but i had a lot of great memories
i miss the aud but it did always smell like they walled in some of the guys who built it. But it was a great arena i will never forget seeing "may day" there what a night
this still gives me tears, especially with the Lets Go Buffalo chant.
Where was Gilbert Perreault???
How funny would it have been if Lafontaine somehow hit the post 😆😆😆😆
If anyone wonders, this is how you say goodbye to an old barn. Let's go Buffalo.
they never tore down the Aud, its still standing. Hell the hockey boards with advertisements are still up.
it was torn down in 2009
it's "Sabre Dance" by Katchutorian (i butchered his last name)
if they only knew what would become of this beautiful building .. torn down for nothing for probass to change thier minds it isnt right so many memoires gone for nothing
i was there!!
Hope they give a good farewell to the Joe before they get into the new building.
whats the name of the song being played?
"Sabre Dance" Aram Khatchurian
fuckin bass pro shops
what was the song at the end in the background
I think it's called aaahhhhhahaaaahaaaaaaaahhhhhhaaaaaaaaaahhhhh ooooooooooooooo oooo ooooooooo oooooo aaaahhhaaaaaaaahhhhhhhaaaaaaah
Sabre dance
The music at the end is from apollo 13
lets go buffalo
nasty
Gil should've been there
ok im 10 so i would love to see the sabres win the cup. the cool part is the chant lets go buffalo
I was fine until I heard the chant of "Lets Go Buffalo" then the tears took over. Gonna miss you Aud.
Oh yeah the caps where just great for last 10 years, not just the last year and a half eh. I love when a team has a bad year and all the 10 year olds say it is because they are "heartless". Get out of Buffalo if you wana be a caps fan. Lets go BUFFALO.
shoulda kept the aud standing and put an OHL team there....nowadays that would be a sick rivalry with Erie, Niagara, and the GTA teams (Barrie, Brampton, Mississauga)
is there anyone at the game that night?
I was. Game itself was meh. That closing ceremony was extraordinary though. Fans were truly aware they were taking part in the end of an era all night: rowdy, classy, and respectful. Some crying with the final horn, others as they took the banners down.
Why did Playfair pick up the puck?? Inside joke, or just to have fun.
yea...it's really sad. I see that building everyday and just think how it's gonna be gone....
Man....eff bass pro lol
what's the deal with the clown music?
why was Mike Wilson a part of this ceremony ? lmao
Neither is Erie, Plymouth, or Saginaw
A yes the good ole days and w/the BEST uniforms they ever wore, not that hideous piece of shit Larry Quinn ok'ed...Down w/the BuffaSlug! Up w/the classic, REAL, Sabres emblem!
lololol go sabres
:)
circus music
the music just degrades them all
