Wow...What a hockey play! Even if I'm not a Sabres fan, I get emotional every time I watch this. This is why we love hockey! What a pass by Lafontaine and a crazy move by May over BOURQUE!! And of course that crazy commentator at the end, perfect hockey moment!
What a great come back! I will never forget that game. Tremendous game by Brad May. I cannot believe he is jobless now. A great player with a big big heart!!!
I remember watching this game as a kid and almost wetting my pants after that amazing goal. I'm not a Sabres fan but you just had to love that team and todays team is similar with great speed and skill. Go 'Canes.
I'll never forget watching this game with my dad at 8 years old, then less then a year later meeting him at the Aud Sabres Open House... I said to Brad May great goal against the bruins goalie and then getting his autograph. Anyone remember how awesome it was at The Aud's Sabres Open House?
as a die hard bruins fan, I was 8 years old at this time. this was the first game I was ever allowed to watch right to the end before bed. I started balling when they lost and my dad was like "what are u crying about" and I went "your team (habs) are still in and I have no one to cheer for" bahaha. then he was like "suck it up u little bitch" and I learned my first lesson that being a bruins fan was heartbreaking lol.
He kissed his stick before he scored the goal. That's what makes it so great. He hadn't scored in something like 18 games but still knew he could do it
Yes they did ladsk, Sabres and B's did meet in the playoffs since that sweep in 1992-93. 1998-99 Stanley Cup Playoffs - Eastern Conference Semifinals, Sabres won 4 games to 2.
I know this is called the "May Day" game, but you could also argue that this game could be called "A Star Is Born," since it showed the world what Dominik Hasek can do.
Some of the goals in this game are real softies indeed. Again, the best memory of an O.T. winner between these two teams *for me* was an Adam Oates goal straight from the face-off just the year before this. BTW - the final shot with the kiss on the stick is just too cheezy.
oh, sorry - the only thing i remember from that year is this: The Carolina Hurricanes, making their first post-season appearance since moving from Hartford, CT, lost to the Boston Bruins in six games in the first round. Hours after the Game 6 loss, Hurricanes defenseman Steve Chiasson died in a automobile accident while driving home from a team gathering. R.I.P. STEVE CHIASSON
@blockland30...it's a special game due to a couple of things: the fact that we were up 3-0 in the series, with the chance to SWEEP, also the fact that we TRAILED by 3, 2, and 1 goal deficits throughout the night, and FINALLY an April day for May as capped the series and the sweep in a 6-5 OT thriller!
Thank you so much for posting this. I grew up with the Sabres, and I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when this happened, and how excited I was, Although the Sabres are strugglers, and no Cups yet, I have faith. And I will always love 'em.
@SumProIAm I think it's just a play on his name, but May-Day used to be a pretty big occasion in the Soviet Union. It does have the added effect of being the phrase used by pilots when their plane is in distress. To this day, there haven't been many OT goals scored in the playoffs (especially a nice goal) by someone less suspecting than Brad May. Deffinitely a top 10 goal call in hockey - or even all of sports. So exciting. I'd put it up there with Dan Kelly's call on Lemieux's winner in 87.
Huh? You talking to me? YOU talking to ME?!? LOL It was only fair that Ottawa bumped Buffalo this year - why would I say anything? I am just disappointed both New York teams did not find a way to upset Buffalo BEFOREHAND - cause Buffalo was not playing well since round one! Maybe they didn't WANT IT enough? Like the Bruins of 1993... BTW - looooove Poulin's goal around 3:30
@ckendall67 I would never complain the refs aren't calling any penalties, personally I've never heard too many do that, some may complain one team is getting more penalties called than another. If you're asking me which way do I want it's a very definite "let 'em play", I think all games should be won by the team with no assistance from officials.
@thinkingjack , I'm not even a Sabres fan, but hearing this call brings tears to my eyes. I wish hockey was still like this, now (since the lock out in 2004)it seems like the refs are too involved and ultimately deciding many games instead of the teams and far too many penalties are called, just let them play.
...some legacy The records show that the habs stole 10 games out of 16 in O.T. Roy never could stop Neely when it was just them both, mano a mano. Roy left Montreal in disgrace - Neely is forever linked with Boston. Roy struggled to win that cup with Colorado - and the 1993 cup was a backdoor cup.
Looks like your Sabres are coming on strong again and pushing for the playoffs this year. I love the young talent on Buffalo. Good luck to you guys. Here's hoping for a Vancouver - Buffalo Stanley Cup Final!
The alleged runner-up for joke of the league blanked Edmonton 3-0 and just beat Buffalo in a shootout again... When games get to shootouts, that's REAL playoff hockey - doesn't bode well for your Miller there... Got anything else to say, burro?
I like at 7:04 when May makes the move around Bourque. You can see the bench sitting and watching and as soon as he made the move, they all stand up in unison like they were sitting on whoopee cushions.
@stubs96 You say there are too many penalties called, but as soon as someone on your gets hooked or tripped, you'll shout "CALL THE PENALTY", won't you now? You only want penalties called against the other team, plain & simple.
@sportsmania21 Hockey is NOT ruined because of Bettman; don't you still watch it anymore? Plenty of great, young players in the game today, but because everyone thinks Bettman "ruined" hockey, that's all you care about, is it?
If my point isn't clear - Neely and Bourque and many current Bruins as well (and also Lafontaine, sure) are gentlemen... But why in blue blazes are you defending Roy here 0 he was never a Sabre! DOLTS! *LMAO*
Buff's 0-2 in shootouts against Boston in 2006-2007 - THAT'S in the record books! And ANYBODY WHO KNOWS hockey will admit that a shootout in the regular season is close but no cigar as it pertains to the pressure felt in a playoff game that goes into overtime... Miller will choke in O.T. - bank on it. And pray that your Drury dud pokes in a rebound so that it DOESN'T get to overtime...
Yep. A standard NHL ice surface is 200' x 85'. The Aud's was four feet shorter in length. (Incidentally, the Bruins were used to playing on a smaller sheet, too; the old Boston Garden was 191' x 83'.)
@stubs96 Yeah, & then the refs will "let them play" then people will get upset again & say the refs aren't calling any penalties, which way do you want? "Call penalties" or "let 'em play"?
his lone claim to fame - lest you count all the dirty stuff he did to players bearing the first name of STEVE... Man, why do creeps like him and JOHN KORDIC wind up on Cup winners?
no problem missing the playoffs - the weather's great out of the damn rink, finally... Oh, that's right - the weather is NEVER great in "Bufff-ah-loooow"... :( Poor you Pooh
they won for nothin - they choked the very next series. they stole this in O.T. - 3 games out of 4. and the day that the buffalo sabres win a cup will be a very sad day for hockey
Ahh...the colorful commentary of Jimmy Lorentz, hey Jim PLEASE come out of retirement and back into the booth alongside RJ, they were the dynamic duo! HARRY NEALE MUST GO!
"Mayday!" is also used when combat planes are in peril...they use mayday as a call for help. The fact that RJ said it over and over sounds like a reference to that.
Could somebody PLEASE tell me the name of that song at the beginning of the video? (I seem to recall that it was in the movie "Home Alone", but I'm not sure.)
Awesome! One of my favourtiee hockey goals ever and I had never seen the replays from all those angles before now (after 13 years!) Thanks for posting.
that was so dirty... that goal probably felt amazing... in OT huge undressage on bourque. then walks around the goalie and shoots it in empty side... i dont kno what goal would feel better then that, most goals are either a beauty that means nothin, or just a big OT garbage goal. this was an overtime beauty. MAY DAY BRAD MAY
Wow...What a hockey play! Even if I'm not a Sabres fan, I get emotional every time I watch this. This is why we love hockey! What a pass by Lafontaine and a crazy move by May over BOURQUE!! And of course that crazy commentator at the end, perfect hockey moment!
May Day is probably one of the greatest calls in hockey history...RJ is a legend
What a great come back! I will never forget that game. Tremendous game by Brad May. I cannot believe he is jobless now. A great player with a big big heart!!!

Gotta love Gurtler and his ridiculous screaming after the 4th and 5th goals!!!! This team made me a die hard Sabres fan, God they were good!
possibly the greatest goal call of all time
I'll never forget watching this game with my dad at 8 years old, then less then a year later meeting him at the Aud Sabres Open House... I said to Brad May great goal against the bruins goalie and then getting his autograph. Anyone remember how awesome it was at The Aud's Sabres Open House?

I don't know what you did, but it works now. It wouldn't load for me before. Thanks.
He kissed his stick before he scored the goal. That's what makes it so great. He hadn't scored in something like 18 games but still knew he could do it
7:00 i love how right when May puts the puck thru Bourques legs you see the whole Sabres bench stand up like get the fuck outta here!!!
WOW THAT SENDS CHILLS UP MY SPINE
I live in Southern California now and I have to tell the Ducks fans how this is the goal of my childhood.

I forgot what a great pass Pat LaFontaine made....laying down ON THE ICE!
you forgot the first goal! it was Cam Neely on the PP.
MAY DAY MAY DAY MAY DAY!!!!!!!!
i'm gonna miss him on the Ducks..
Thank you so much for posting this. I grew up with the Sabres, and I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when this happened, and how excited I was, Although the Sabres are strugglers, and no Cups yet, I have faith. And I will always love 'em.
I'd kiss my stick too....he had not scored a goal in like 4 months plushe just scored a playoff OT winner
It's Rick Jeanneret "Lalalalalafontaine!"
not in st louis, everybody loved him and brett hull :D

Goosebumps still to this day. Rj the best in the business

"Mayday!" is also used when combat planes are in peril...they use mayday as a call for help. The fact that RJ said it over and over sounds like a reference to that.
This was Andy Moog's last game with the Bruins

Awesome!
One of my favourtiee hockey goals ever and I had never seen the replays from all those angles before now (after 13 years!)

Jim Lorentz is speaking with great clarity and foresight. He sounds a lot more knowledgable than he does now--what happened?
Idk man it takes grit dd to win a cup and we are starting to build that now. I feel one more stay at home guy and we could go along way.
i was like 10 and remember going nuts in my living room when he scored... it was late and nite and woke my mom, she was pissed haha
Before this series, Boston would PWNED Buffalo in the playoffs and after THIS series Boston hasn't beaten Buffalo in the playoffs..
And, of course, YOU remember this: the Dallas Stars beat the Buffalo Sabres four games to two to win their first Stanley Cup.
The song is called....wait for it....SABER DANCE....no kidding...hence why the Buffalo Sabres use it...hope that helps...
Does anyone else have a problem loading this? If so, please fix it because this is one of my favorite clips. Thanks.
Yes and those were the good ole days...why we couldnt reenact goals like this vs. the Senators is annoying
May Day is the first of day of may.
Brad May scored so RJ figured May Day would be a good goal call.
man that was my first sabres playoff game i will never forget that game i still have that ticket
MAY DAY MAY DAY MAY DAY MAY DAY MAY DAY
BRAD MAY WINS IT IN OVER TIME.
Best call by Rick
Yea! They're expansion cousins after all! :D
who is that guy? Is it Ted Darling? At least they have RJ doing the call at the end.
And that's one of the many reasons why Mr. LaFontaine his hanging from the rafters!
I do believe the Bruins have 5 cups.
And cappucino makers in their locker room too.
Maybe the fact that Brad MAY scored the OT goal prompting RJ to say "May Day!"
@zer014
totally agree!!!!
Great game. Boston deserved to get sweeped after blowing such a big lead.
I wish you could get the part where RJ says "Can you spell second round?"
Alex Mogilny was an unstoppable force that year!
I HATE the Sabres now, but was a BIG fan back then! Ahhh May Day....
When they excavated the Aud site the found Bourque's jock strap.
that was so dirty... that goal probably felt amazing... in OT huge undressage on bourque. then walks around the goalie and shoots it in empty side... i dont kno what goal would feel better then that, most goals are either a beauty that means nothin, or just a big OT garbage goal. this was an overtime beauty. MAY DAY BRAD MAY
I remember that game...good hockey then..now its all garbage!
I was at this game. I was 13 and loved every minute of it.
May Day is also a distress call used by ships and planes.
Congratulations to Brad May on his Stanley Cup vicotry!
this was the begginning of a looooong playoff drought for the Bruins....
No they beat the Canadiens the next year who were the defending champs.
@L4RiVi3R3 Me too...Harry has his moments tho! :P
GOD DAMN. Brad May schooled Ray f'n Borque. :C
Boston hasn't met Buffalo in the playoffs since.
no - this isn't the playoff season GATTICANUS
Sorry man I don't know what the issue is.
So was I! Only I was 6. Best game ever.
Boy, did Ray Borque get owned or what?
wht the song called at the beginning
this call still gives me chills
