    Oh my days!! I have no idea what your job was before but you were born to do this! I cannot imagine the stops-and-starts you must do whilst out cycling to be able to gather the footage that you do; a moment passing an opening in a stone wall, the breeze on a flower as you wisp passed. But the compostion , the drone shots - their rythm and pacing with the mood and the music, is just BRILLIANT! I watch a lot of cycling videos, as does my husband but if I ever just want to escape into the screen and feel the zen of cycling , you my friend, are my 'go to'. So beautiful, so peaceful, so gracefully edited they make anyone pause as they pass my screen... and they simply can't move until it's over. Thank you. And congrats on your baby....who is now probably already on a Strider bike LOL

    Hi, I did the hebridean way last may. I too went on the esatern coast of Harris and spent the night in the bothy in Scalpay. Fist night in a bothy, pretty isolated, I was woken up at 1 AM by rolling stones outside. I knew it must be the sheep but I still took my bike lock with me in my sleeping bag. Then I didn't wake up until 8 in the morning 😁. I went to the Butt of lewis. Compared to what I had done before the route from stornoway looked a bit dull but nonetheless it was a good reward to reach the lighthouse. Also, 2 nights before I slept in Ardroil campsite on Uig bay. It's worth going down there the road is intresting and the sight are really beautifull. I did it in 5 days. I plan on coming back to the western isles next year and spending more time there visiting more places.

    Amazing video. Never heard of bikepacking until I saw this video. Im female and would like to do this alone as a personal challenge. I think it's great that you can just jump on a train after work and get to Scotland the next day and then start your journey. Your video is very informative, talking about the weather and how many days it took you. Four days is great esp when you work a normal job and take annual leave. I would love to do that in Sept next year.
    Just a very important question for me - I don't like cycling around cars. How busy is it car wise? From your video I can see its quite quiet.

    • @Cycling366
      @Cycling366  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks very much! Hopefully you can get out and enjoy some bikepacking soon :) the route is all on roads, but mostly very quiet roads. There are a couple of A road sections in the north of the islands that are quite busy but you can take the long way round on the b roads to avoid these sections. Well worth doing!

    Enjoyed watching your adventure, brought back memories. If you want a rough adventure to The Butt of Lewis, try the east coast side from North Tolsta ( over "the bridge to nowhere" ) Best done after a dry period - it's rough going and very boggy, but very quiet and fun. ( includes a ruined church & peat cutting Shielings settlement )
    All best to you and the family.

    I actually spent a few wet days planning this trip recently and look forward to riding it next spring with my wife. We know the islands pretty well but have never cycled from one end to the other and plan to take our time, poking our noses into all sorts of out of the way places we love.

    For anyone wanting to cycle the Outer Hebrides I'll add that the communities there would really love to discourage wild camping, while it is totally legal they get so many visitors a year that sticking to camp sites helps to limit the impact on their lovely islands.

    Firstly Congratulations on the arrival of the wee guy, someone to have adventures with in the future.
    I was toying with doing it in both directions as it may be as easy for me than getting back from the top though there is an alternative to use a pickup service but it does cost a fortune. One question no Callanish Stones? I would have thought that might have been great for the drone. Just love a wee bothy great fun.

It is on my bucket list and I hope to spend a little longer on the islands as I also want to climb the high points on each of the islands as well. Great bits of information here, helping me plan this trip for the summer. What would you reckon is the best time for this, when aiming for the best weather, not too crowded, not too much midges?

    • @Cycling366
      @Cycling366  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Lennart! To be honest, the weather is such an unpredictable entity, I’d probably recommend late May or June. The midges aren’t particularly bad on the islands compared to other places I’ve visited up in Scotland!

    Was the lighthouse on Scalpay easy to cycle to? As I notice the road/track stops before you get to the lighthouse.
    As I’m planning to go there soon 🤔😁
    But thinking about it, in Scotland you can legally cycle on footpaths, not like us here in England sadly.

    • @Cycling366
      @Cycling366  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mostly, there is a gate to enter at the top of the footpath and then it’s loose gravel until the finish. 👍

  • @Cycling4Wellbeing
    @Cycling4Wellbeing ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Tom, great video, definitely on my list of rides to do and love the idea of a diversion to Scalpay. I am new to Bikepacking, I've only really done one proper trip, I cycled the NC500 in Sep 21; it was an amazing adventure which I completed in just over 6 days, I wild camped most nights with a couple of nights on camp sites. I rode the route Mark Beaumont did with GCN over 3 days! The route doesn't go all the way up to John O' Groats, it drops down well before at Melvich, this route is so nice, returns inland to Lairg, Dingwall then a ride around the Black Isle before heading back to Inverness. I have lots planned for 2023 and I have just started a FaceBook Group Page - Bikepacking UK. The aim of the group is to get like-minded people to share stories of their adventures and hopefully to get more people out bike packing.
    Be great if you joined the group to share your adventures. Look forward to sharing bike packing adventures with you next year. Ride safe.

    Congratulations Tom on the baby and an inspiring video. I had planned to do this route this year, but it didn't work out, so it's a definite for 2023. Only one question - as you were there in the summer, were you bothered by the dreaded midges?

      Thanks very much Richard! You’ll have a great time when you get round to it. Midges we’re virtually none existent actually. The high winds and lack of shelter for them makes them hard to come by unless you stumble across any woodland!

      @@Cycling366 Thanks for the prompt response. I was planning to do the ride in May or September, but perhaps I'll risk June!

      In the video description I have linked all the routes. It’s free to download. You just need a free MapMyRide account 👍
