I have an old 90s Giant MTB that i picked up for €50 locally. It is a tad large for me, but as mentioned in the comments below, it does have a longer wheel base and is a lot more comfortable than my 90s Kona Lava Dome MTB (which has a 17" frame compared to the 20" frame of the Giant). I am thinking of converting the Giant to a daily communter-/touring. I do not have a car, so i would like to load it with front and rear racks, it is only the frame size that is putting me off.
You can put your bivy bag on standing up. And you can take it off standing up.
Great video, a whole lot of walking but that hasn't deterred me from saving this for later.
Excellent review, but I'm personally interested in the performance of the front rack, especially as it has worked on a suspension fork. Has it held up up well? Any slipping or durability issues? Handling? Would love your perspective as I'm getting my first front suspension bike that will be used for bikepacking. Thanks!
I have the Soloist, which for the money is a brilliant tent. The only thing, in my humble opinion, that lets it down is the door. This Ultra one seems to have dealt nicely with that. However, the flysheet seems quite high off the floor, or were u pitched on uneven ground? Thanks for the great review, well done!👍
Thanks Tim! Yeah it’s a cracking value tent that. Yeah I was on marshy land so it was a bit lumpy
Gorgeous video mate. What a fantastic ride
Thanks very much! :) appreciate the comments
Get any surly in any color you want 😁
I’d love to!
I liked the new format but I also very much like the old format.
Thanks Jules! I’m yet to decide on a final outcome from this experiment!
Love the fact that it’s not about the miles, the power outputs and the numbers, just tranquil, stunning scenery, beautifully filmed and showcasing what a glorious country we live in.
Thanks Marc! Yeah that’s what o love about bikepacking personally. Slow and steady taking it all in
Really enjoyed the film. Its great getting the pieces to camera as you go through. My wife prefers this format. (But I enjoy your other format too 😊)
Thanks David! Appreciate it :)
Thanks for another nice email video. I enjoyed how you shot it, the start was very cinematic. 👍🏼
Don't know why the previous message says 'email', doh 🤣
Haha thank you!
Stunning scenery ❤️
Thanks Ian!
I liked this format 👍🏻
Cheers Jason!
Let us know what you thought of this film in the comments - bit different so would appreciate the feedback :D Thank you!
can it deflate a self-inflating mattress?
Does the self inflating mattress have a mouthpiece? Probably not if not!
If you want to go "fuster" get a racing bike. Bikepacking isn't about that.
Maybe not for you! But for some people it will be important
Im here for the accent 😉
🙏
How did you find booking accommodation ?, must say I am struggling, loads appears booked up in early September !
I basically booked it 9 months in advance… I had a feeling it would be booked up quickly so that’s what I did. Some places like campsites will have you if you’re by yourself last minute. But equally, wild camping is legal in Scotland so you’ve always got a safety net of that. :)
@@Cycling366 I fear we might have left it too late and none of us fancy camping !!
Great video and very enjoyable to watch. The Hebridean Way is on my list for Scotland and tbh, the logistics part at the end was very interesting. Thanks again and congratulations on your new adventure into fatherhood.
Thanks Dave! It’s a brilliant route so well worth a go! Thank you :)
I've chosen a bike, and it has 26x4.80" tires. More known as "fat bike". I live in Sweden and we have that white stuff on the ground called "snow" some months every year. I don't have any other bikes than fat bikes, simply because I don't want skinny tires or narrower than 3.80". For bike packing, a fat bike is in my opinion the best choice because you can ride it all year no matter what terrain. We all are different, my choice may not be the same as your. Besides that, I enjoy bike packing videos no matter what bike is used because I am interested to see what other bike packers have in their bags (gear, camping stuff and so on).
Nice! I do like a good fat bike for all terrain bikepacking. Not owned one myself but wish I did!
So, a six minute Tailfin advert...... that's a nope from me. For the price of their gear I could buy another bike.
Makes no difference to me if you buy it or not. You do you!
Literally just today traded my gravel bike in for a hard tail MTB it just wasn't capable enough and uncomfortable on anything rougher than a smooth towpath and sketchy af in damp muddy conditions.
Nice! Yeah nice to have that stability on the wet descents for sure
Excellent video of a beautiful place. I am planning to ride part of the NC500 when I visit Scotland(I live in Canada) in June. Planning on riding from from Ullapool to Inverness and very curious to know what the traffic was like. Did you get up early to avoid camper vans or is it not as bad as some suggest?
Thanks mate! It’s not quiet, but in June, it’ll be better than the school holidays. Basically just got get going a bit earlier and avoid the A roads where possible!
@@Cycling366 Thanks for the reply. That's exactly what I needed to hear!
Hi Mr @Cycling366 !! I just discovered your channel, and since you seem to be a nice and chill guy, I subscribe ! :-) As an 18yo boy, I plan to do my first bikepacking, so I do some research. As a matter of fact, I don't have much money saved, so I'd like to go with my own bike instead of buying a new one.. however, it is pretty heavy, I struggle to do long distance with it, and its brakes kind of rub against the wheel. Do you think I should fix it or buy a new one ? Thank you. Love from France 🇲🇫
Hey! Will be cheaper to fix the brakes most likely, gives you a chance to test the bike packing lifestyle before you commit to something more expensive (or new) in future
I understand why you've gone down the shill route and I enjoy and look forward to your backpacking videos so I'll stay subscribed. Looking at the amount of content creators promoting tailfin I do wonder whether the extensive R&D comprises of mostly Marketing. Tailfin does seem to be the 'athletic greens' of bikepacking vlogs.
Cheers Malcolm, appreciate the feedback
Great video! I am planning a similar trip as yours, you mentioned there is free parking in Stykkisholmur, is that in the ferry terminal or elsewhere in the town?
Thank you? Yeah around the ferry terminal and also parking around the town. There was plenty
Hello i have veen qurius about big agnes winter tent 4 seson they clame its good for condensation even thou its a single wall tent.Do you have snowmobil tracks in scottland i fantasise about fatbiking in skottland?
I don’t use that tent so can’t comment! We have some great gravel tracks up in the Cairngorms that would be ideal for fat biking
Muito obrigado pelo seu review. Foi muito útil. Um abraço brasileiro a todos os viajantes de bicicleta do planeta.
Thanks!
Very interesting
Thanks!
I use a tailfin top tube bag & it's excellent but the ortlieb quick rack is a lot cheaper than the tailfin version .
Nice! Yeah I’ve not got much experience using that but I have reached out to Ortlieb to try some products in future
I have a CX and hard tail with QR skewers, as well a CX, hardtail and full sus bikes with through axles, none of which have any rack mounting. My Tailfin setup works great with all my bikes and is very secure even when descending at inadvisable speeds off road.
Nice! 👌 good that you can use it across all your bikes as well
I like the Tailfin systems, just don't like the price, looking at the kit they sent you and then adding the same kit to shopping basket on the Tailfin website it came to £781, I may have missed some of the straps they sell, if they supplied those as well - their versions of voile straps which would push the price over £800 - I realise there are a wide range of options at various prices in the market however the Tailfin universal thru axle system does seem very good and probably the best option for use with a MTB, I've got a rear Topeak tetra rack and would agree about having to tighten it over time.... Anyway I best get saving !
Agreed! Very expensive but it’s great quality and they do a lot of R&D so that’s got to be paid for somehow!
You have to weigh the initial outlay against the number of times you'll use it. If it lasts years then the cost per use is low. Quality costs.
I've seen loads of videos which show the Tailfin range. Non as clear and straightforward as this. Cheers
Thank you! :)
Does it only work with thru axle? Mine is quick release I think.
It works just fine. Tailfin can supply whatever works with your axle. I have a QR setup for my older CX and the Tailfin universal thruaxle kit for my other bikes.
Jeremy beat me to it but yes QR adaptors can be bought too
I guess Tailfin provided all that gear because your channel has prospects, nothing wrong with that, it’s just that it feels like suddenly you’re selling something but then again, that’s the whole point of creating content (have income) which is time consuming and requires a lot of work. Anyways, Tailfin has definitely quality product, I already bought the suspension fork mounts paired with their cargo cages and some straps.
Thanks, sorry you feel that way. It makes no difference to me if you do or do not buy these things. Just get out on your bike and enjoy the world is my motto
You can go Bikepacking on any bike. In India and Africa those guys have ancient bikes carrying everything, so unless you're a fashion victim you're sorted.
Completely agree
Thanks Mr Tailfin. Thank you for your sales pitch. Did you sign a contract, to get these products?
Nope 👎 I approached them because I like their stuff. Just because I talk about something I like, doesn’t mean I’ve been paid.
@@Cycling366unfortunately that's one of the drawbacks of doing reviews. You'll get idiots accusing you of being nothing more than an advert.
I’ve bikepacked on my full sus 170mm travel enduro bike, steel fat bike, road bike, Ali rigid 80’s bike and gravel bike. If it has 2 wheels and pedals it works.
Absolutely! Got more videos coming to show different options for different bike types for those who aren’t as convinced!
@@Cycling366 and I agree with tailfin. I’ve had mine 5 years now and it’s perfect still. I have a universal thruaxle now to fit any bike.
A drop bar titanium MTB would be the ultimate compromise between the two mentioned. Great tyre clearance with drop bar comfort, add in 100mm travel and you get most of the best features from both. And titanium is a lot easier to look after, I have a 2 year old carbon gravel bike and it's showing signs of wear already, and it's only a little lighter than a titanium equivalent.
Yeah definitely. The ultimate compromise but quite costly of course!
I use a pump sack. It's really light and it doubles up as a dry bag. I try and avoid buying battery powered gadgets to do something I can do by hand. Every little counts to reduce my carbon footprint.
Good shout!
Screw a dog leash anchor device into the ground as an anchor point for your sturdy bicycle lock.
Sounds interesting haha
mtb with 100mm of travel all the way, bigger tires, more options,, more comfort, i have an 8bar tflsberg, its amazing, great steel frame, great geometry. old mtbs have crap geometry, better to buy a new frame and build it up or get an atb designed for long hours in the saddle.
Yeah I do like a short travel MTB
Great info. I've been looking at moving from my heavy steel touring bike to a gravel bike since, although I do tour a bit, most of my riding is just day to day. One gravel bike that may make a true all-rounder is the Giant Revolt X. It has 40mm front forks and a drop seat post with 30mm of suspension. Definitely not a low cost starter but looks very intriguing as a potential do-it-all. All the best from Atlantic Canada, eh!
Thanks mate! Sounds great :) I like the super short travel suspension forks concept
I have the Flexitail with the light. I’m so glad you’re using one now as I was someone who mentioned it. Take it from someone who does have a lung condition you don’t want that black mould near your airways more than your mat!
Yeah thanks for bringing it to my attention! Yeah definitely :)
Just purchased one, arrived today... when I turn it on and in a few seconds it starts like a dry bearing sound. Wondering if this is normal ? Should I be concerned ? Should I send it back and get another one ? ...Alan in 🇨🇱
It’s a lot louder when it’s not plugged into your sleeping pad, so if it’s still making a racket, I’d send it back!
I have an older version for backpacking and I like it. However, mold in your mat is a myth and what you're seeing in your mat is the reflective insulation.
Nice! Yeah it may be, but it seems to be very dark and mouldy looking where the air enters vs everywhere else so I’m not sure about that!
Really nice videos! What type of Topeak rack are you using on your gravel bike? The explorer or tourist version?
Cheers! Explorer :)
Ah, a cadence sensor. Shame.
Yeah! Not a high end torque sensor but does the trickb
I use the inflation bag to blow up the mat doesnt take long
Yeah good call, just requires a small amount of effort which this doesn’t 😛
I got the slightly bigger one with the tent light on it too, few more grams but multi-use is a winner.
Yeah a few people have messaged me about that! Might have to check that out
