  • We take a much closer look at the new 3.0L Turbo Diesel for the F-150, including the design similarities and differences with the 6.7L Power Stroke, unique design components, and changes that had to be made to make it fit and work within the F-150.

    I have a 2021 3.0. I love my truck. Max towing package and a 6.5 ft box I am Canadian so our gallon is slightly larger than my good neighbours to the south so our numbers will differ. Your gallon is 3.78 liters and an imperial gallon is 4.5 liters. I travel 128 Km to work and back. That is 76.8 miles. I consistently run 8.4 liters per 100 km. This works out to 33 miles per gallon. This is as good as any commuter vehicle and I get to drive a full size pick up with all the functionality and capability that a truck offers for the same as most drive in their very limited mid size car. I also have 20 inch tires, all terrain KO2. Thank you Ford. Did I say that I love my truck?

    Ford USA may have dropped this engine from the F-150 lineup, but Ford Australia has adopted this engine into the Ford Ranger. Alas, this engine is not making it into the upcoming USA 2024 Ford Ranger, but is available in Australia and some other markets for right hand drive Ford Rangers, which is assembled in Thailand. The V6 diesel is also going into the 2024 VW Amarok, assembled in South Africa.

    Design life of the engine according to Ford is 150k miles, yet people complain about the oil pump belt on the 3.0 Duramax needing to be inspected at 150k.

    • @karlschauff7989
      @karlschauff7989 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      And now the belt is holding up so well that they pushed the service interval out to 200k miles. And putting the belt at the back of the engine turned out to be intelligent. Comparing labor hours to replace the belt on the 3.0 Duramax, its less than the labor hours to replace the oil pump belt on F-150 2.7 Ecoboosts and 5.0 Coyotes, which are at the front of the engine. Nobody thinks about all the stuff you have to remove to get to a belt on the front of the engine. Even just to get the timing chain cover off requires moving a sht ton of stuff.

    Folks. I hate Ford and Ford diesels more than anyone, but "design life" DOES NOT mean something is garbage. No one, NO ONE, makes anything with a design life of many hundreds of thousands of miles. I don't think anything has much more than a 200k mile life....but that doesn't mean they don't last longer. I think a 12v Cummins only had about a 150k mile design life, and they routinely are well north of 800k and running strong.

      @@joeygallegos3503 haha, there is so much wrong with that. First it isn't because of spart that the oil is better on diesels so you can do longer intervals, it's because gas is a solvent and diesel is more of a lubricant. And diesels have just as much a problem with timing chains, it's just that they are built stronger to handle the extra torque, so you don't have to replace them quite as much. And diesels don't burn cleaner, they have just as bad, if not worse emissions then gas engines.

      House of Diesel many many 3.5 ecoboosts have returned great mpgs and also made it beyond 150,000 miles with little mechanical trouble. The Ecolab company just bought 256 more '18 f150's to replace their aging 14's with 3.5's. They went with mostly 2.7's this time because of the extra couple extra mpgs but a lot of their roughly used 14's w/ 3.5 EB had 120-160k on them. @@4WDMagazine this is the ford lion engine, developed between ford Europe and peugot/Citroen PSA back in the mid 2000s. It has been continually reworked and updated and has been offered in various V6 and V8 configurations and various displacements. The latest developments have been pulled away from use in European ford / peugot models and land rover models and instead for bringing into the F150 / North American market for light duty pickups. This is why it has timing belts, as opposed to chains. Minimal changes (and this minimal expense) etc. Normally you'd see timing chains for an engine designed for north American truck market as that's what customers expect here for durability. I suspect that they cut corners so to speak to really test the waters and see if the interest really turns into sales. I suspect if it does, the next version of the 3.0 power stroke V6 will be a Cleansheet Design with much more in common with the 6.7 scorpion tdv8. Hopefully we see that with the next generation F series (and not this upcoming facelift).

    I bought my used 2014 Mercedes-Benz Turbodiesel sedan with 59,000 miles. It now has 86,000 miles. If my engine had a design life of 150,000 miles, that means that in only 61,000 more miles, I would need to re-engine this vehicle. What does Ford Motor Company say about the cost of re-engining this pick up truck? How much does it cost to purchase a rebuilt engine for this truck? $9000? More? How much? $12,000? Also, what about the downtime? Who is going to reimburse me for my truck being out of service? This is coming from a man who loves Ford vehicles. Toyota had an advertising campaign a few years ago where they had customers with 300,000 and 400,000 miles on their original engines. I think Ford made a huge public relations gaffe by publicly stating the design life at only 150,000 miles.

Not as durable or longer lasting as a proven chain driven system and the rational for this belt over the metal linked belt will be it's downfall in the end. Especially when it's gonna be required to be replaced after that 100K milage warranty is expired! Hence the changed in the warranty of this particular engine/model.

    very disappointed in the mpg on this engine. At first blush, it sounds good but rating based off 2 wheel drive single cab. When you add on the crew cab and 4x4, clearly not worth the extra up front cost as well as maintenance cost with only 25 mpg. I love Ford but I call this engine a fail.

    • @erikkovacs3097
      @erikkovacs3097 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Diesels nowadays don't have that much more maintenance costs. Fuel savings offset any extra maintenance like DEF or more expensive oil. An apples to apples comparison of the crew cab 4x4's shows that the diesel blows away the ecoboost's mpg especially while towing where the gap widens to about 50%.

    • @4WDMagazine
      @4WDMagazine  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      4WD Magazine In hindsight this is obvious. When was the last time you saw a gasoline class 8 truck? 1965? In the late 60's early 70's the trucking industry shifted to diesel almost completely and it wasn't because of torque (steam engines have more torque) but fuel efficiency. Fuel is the number one cost to the transportation industry.

  • @rogerjohnson378
    @rogerjohnson378 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Why would you run timing belts? Being a diesel it is an interference motor, she conveniently left that out. I'm also confused as to why you'd run a direct drive fan with a novel clutch design (ever had an AC clutch fail?). Twin electric fans would work just fine with the advantage of redundancy.
