    I just bought a 2018 lariat powerstroke F150. It's 5 years old and has 23,000 original miles. I'm actually seeing closer to 30 mpgs on the highway with no load. I got the truck for almost 4K under Kelly blue book. With all of the markups everywhere this was very attractive. It looks and smells like a brand new truck. I love it.

      It don't get anywhere near 30mpg, mid 20's if you are lucky. With all the electronic shit and emissions shit they put on them they're not going to get anywhere near 30mpg...well ok maybe downhill in neutral with the engine shut off...or when being hauled away on a flatbed wrecker as I'm sure they'll be having a lot of given the initial test fail of these things.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      No thanks, after they added all the electronic shit and emissions those new diesels regardless what emblem you buy are just garbage. You see them sitting on the sides of the roads all the time broke down because of that garbage...I'll take the old mechanical diesels without the emissions, I'd actually like to get home every day.

    As a bit of science, could you run the trucks up the grade at the speed of the slowest truck, to compare fuel efficiency? It would be really interesting to compare engine and truck efficiencies at a common output level. Maybe even just one demo - take the 2.7 Ecoboost and run it at roughly the same speed as the Powerstroke.

    I enjoy reviews that FLT puts out however pre-production trucks shouldn't be used for testing for testing reviews such as the ike and gold hitch. Wait till the production version is released so it will be the same as every day joe gets. This will eliminate the issues that occurred the first go round and all the negative comments below for a second round of testing. Just my opinion though, continue to put out good reviews guys

    Squat: it’s a half ton, it’s going to be “soft”. this truck is made more for daily driving rather than out right towing, even though it has a lot of capacity. The up hill time was slow but dam that was impressive mpg’s for an up hill load. Looking forward to the 100 mi. Loop video.

    I like that Ford is offering a diesel in the F150, but it seems a little rushed. The fact that they had to reprogram the ECM after the issue during the first downhill run reminds me of all the issues they had with Navistar’s 6.0 diesel, which was definitely rushed into production. Maybe I’m wrong, only time will tell.

      DanielJaegerFilms The 6.0 problems were physical- weak heads, egr, turbo, etc. This was a pre-production computer issue. This motor has been around for years; just not in the F150.

    • @ratedredneck96
      @ratedredneck96 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      DanielJaegerFilms they rushed it because ram was putting the ecodiesel in their 3/4 ton trucks and ford got butt hurt about being behind them when really that where they have been the whole time. They rush things at the possible expense of the person driving getting into an accident over a vehicle malfunction. My mom got a pretty much brand new platinum edition ford suv and was so excited, within three days it threw a transmission code and went into the same limp mode as the 150 did and the sales rep told mom it wasnt a safe idea to continue trying to get that car so now she has a hyundai elantra GT. But yeah thats why they rushed the f150 diesel project and its a flop just like the 6.0( i liked that reference a lot...good job lol)

    • @JohnDiMartino
      @JohnDiMartino 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The difference is this is a time proven engine from Europe that is rock solid,unlike the 6.0 navistar, which was a clean sheet design that was only built to be an entry level diesel for the price point sales trucks , it was the lowest bidder engine ,they talked it up but it was a piece of garbage that did get the truck down the road long enough to take a truck sale from a freight liner or other that used the more expensive but way more reliable 5.9/6.7 Cummins.

      The same inflation that hit the housing market 10 years ago seems to be hitting the car market now. I would rather not give that much money for any vehicle, but at least with a 3500 people use them to make massive amounts of money. This is why I will not buy a newer vehicle until I absolutely have to. My other ones are getting rough looking but they still run and are paid for.

    • @mcclungfarm7965
      @mcclungfarm7965 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But the Diesel only comes in the higher trim unless you get a standard cab work truck, long bed. It seems to me they only did this because so many people have a hang up over a v6 gas motor being so good. The eco boost is proven technology by now. It is just better. And you can get a 3.5, xl crew cab 4x4, with max towing, and stx package for under $40k with a 6.5' bed. There is no way you can recoup the extra cost you would incur with the diesel.

    I'm a little surprised at how much this diesel struggled during the climb compared to just about any gas powered truck, all manufactures included.
    That being said many are too young to remember in the mid to late Eighties and early Nineties the trucks of the day were the 454cid big block putting out a whole 230-250 hp and around 360 lb/ft of torque. Those trucks were good for about 45 mph towing 9000 lbs up our local 6 percent grade, so in those terms the little diesel performed ok.
    I bring that up because all the truck manufactures today have gas engines pulling around that load 60 mph up the Ike....laughing at the trucks of old...

    • @YZBot
      @YZBot 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's purely a limitation of horsepower. Everyone always likes to salivate at the torque numbers, but seem to forget that horsepower is the measure of the rate at which the torque can be applied. It's all math and doesn't take much work to see where the diesel is going to lose it's advantage to the gas engine, in respect to putting power to the ground. There is actually a point in which the little 3.3L V6 base engine will put more power to the ground and walk away from the 3.0L powerstroke. It's purely a matter of engine speed and how the torque is multiplied through the transmission and final drive ratio. It's not rated to pull that much (why Ford?) but the 2.7L Ecoboost would walk away from the 3.0L pulling the same weight.

    • @2003evodave

      Yes, I bought new several of those 454s and still have two today. One is a 1995 Chev HD 3500 dump truck with 82k original miles and another is a 1994 Chev regular duty 3500 service body with 78k miles both stock were junk! Since these were for commercial use they only come with a 12 month 12k warranty so after that we started the upgrades IE HD transmission coolers and engine oil coolers plus added elc fans, full exhaust replacement from the head to the tip, new cam, cold air intake, lower temp thermostat, reworked heads and valves.
      Yes it all helped but not enough so tried a couple complete engine rebuilds with all high performance parts,,,,,still not worth it and too many issues so bought a couple crate engines from Chev IE low compression 502 ci with 450 HP and one HD 502 ci 500 HP both were given better exhausts, and intakes which on the dyno put out 15% better than rated. This was now getting better until we had people unable to use this power who broke everything from front to back including the engines plus the fuel bills were worst than our full sized dump trucks with 15 liter diesels pulling trailers.
      The moral of the story is the new Ram 3500 Cummings or Ford 450/550 diesels we run now are light years ahead of any gasoline engine today in towing, long lasting durability and MPG.
      The lightest truck we use is the Ram 3500 and as for those two old low mileage chebbies,,,they are the garbage, fire wood and junk clean up rigs plus the ones the workers or friends can borrow anytime.

For that price I'll buy a real truck that can actually handle the weight and workload. 10k+ behind a 1/2 ton truck is asking for a wreck. The Microsoft syndrome of beta testing on customer is worrisome in automotive industry. The Tesla recently had an egg on their face when Consumer Reports discovered that their model 3 had inordinately long stopping distance, and Tesla pushed some firmware updates that supposedly fixed that. That's on a long-released car - no one noticed the car takes way too long to stop? Seriously? No one at Tesla tested stopping distance? WTF? When Microsoft does that, it's annoying, but when car manufacturers do that, people will get killed.

    I'm curious to see what shakes out on this truck. I had the EcoDiesel Ram - but any savings on fuel were quickly ate up with other costs.
    The fuel filter that needed to be changed, and then the oil filter which took a full year and a half before aftermarket filters became available, and then the 10 quarts of Rotella T6 aren't cheap versus a Hemi with 7 quarts of synthetic and a $11 filter is much cheaper - plus no fuel filter to change every 10,000mi too
    I ditched the EcoDiesel for those reasons, and I had concerns with it's longevity - already had sensors replaced out of warranty before I traded it in.

    Glad to see they got it sorted out. I love trucks but these prices are getting ridiculous, yeah I know I can get a lower model but even those are getting stupid. First thing I look for when buying a truck is of it can be used as a truck. On, off road, does it have power, can I manually shift and the trans acualy holds the gear I chose, can I see out the mirrors with a trailer... all these extra features are way down the list at least for me.

      Anyone that has worked at a car dealer has seen many new model release vehicles in the last few years that arrive and already have service messages to reflash this module or that module before sale. The assembly plants have to run and early builds often have software known to not be final and will be fixed before customer delivery. Obviously the software can get revisions at any time in the vehicle’s life. If you have your head up your ass and want to hate then stick your head back up your ass and disregard the truth from someone that works in the business (but not for any of the brands selling half ton PUs).

    To all the second chance BS below. Original truck tested was pre-production and not indicative of what paying customers will get. The calibration used in the retest is production and what paying customers can expect. You’d know this if you watched the video.

    • @volvo09
      @volvo09 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, this is an extreme test and is quite indicative of all the minor corrections that come out (software updates) for systems in vehicles once they get released to the public... Mfg'rs try to hit these points in testing, but still have to fix things like "vehicle won't restart after being started for a short period below -20f". From the video they were going downhill and off the throttle, so the grade shift logic probably told some system to do something it didn't expect or like, like the tcm allowing a shift (if they said the exact situation I missed it).... I personally don't see it as a big deal, even if it were a gm. Software fixes are inconvenient, but it's fixable and all human error in cause.

    There are so many problems with this video, I hardly know where to begin! First off, this is not anywhere near a fair comparison between a 5.0 V8 and the 3.5 EB. That would require them both to be 4WD and have the same axle ratio. Another mistake Mr Truck, is that the 2018 and newer 5.0L is not a 302. It is a 307. 2017 was the last year for the 302 Coyote. Starting in 2018 a millimeter larger bore, thanks to the switch to plasma cylinders, increased the displacement. Just barely staying within the 5.0L window. The 2018 and newer 5.0 has a different block, with a different bore size, different heads, different cams, different fuel injection, different compression ratio, 12:1 vs 10.5:1. Bigger valves thanks to the bigger bore, etc. this is not, as you say, “the old Coyote” . I would really like to give the normally excellent TFL crew a mulligan on this one, and maybe we can get a real 5.0 V8 to 3.5 EB Ike Gauntlet retest with like equipped trucks? Just sayin....

    8,700 lbs trailer with 10% tongue weight of 870 lbs on a truck with 1,314 lbs payload. I can see why it squatted 3". You only had 444 lbs of payload available for occupants and 150 lbs to the driver. Do the three of you weight less than 594?
    That's the problem I have with half ton trucks, the only way to tow near the limit is to drive solo. Otherwise you're over the weight limit while pulling a trailer thousands of lbs below the advertised weight limit.

Who says they can't run the truck the third time after ford fixes it's squatting issue as they stated , there's a few more points for gold hitch if they beaf up the suspension for test number three.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course not, they're 1/2 ton trucks they're built to show off not be towing heavy loads, maybe your little boat, popup camp trailer, or a small travel trailer, but not huge 7k+ trailers...that's what 3/4 and 1 ton trucks are built for.
      Ford as well as other manufacturers love to play the towing/hauling numbers game but in reality they don't give a shit because once they have your money they're out of the picture, so when you hookup to that 12k trailer because Ford says that little 4 cylinder F150 can tow it and you go plowing through a line of cars that's your fault.

I’m not saying it’s a good idea or a good value but to SOME people having all this stuff is important and Ford is way ahead of dodge or Chevy in the technology department. LOL 6.5ft is a long bed. Isn't 8ft a long bed? Does anyone even get a 8ft one anymore? I what I would need, but I would never find a used one out there.

      Travis Alexander you can't get an 8ft bed with crew cab in an F-150 but I think you can if you go to the F-250 and up, Toyota Tundra has an 8ft bed option but you wouldn't have the same leg room in the back seat because they shorten up the cab

      It's the longest bed you can get with the f150 supercrew. Should they call it the "Longer" bed instead of "Long" bed? Would that satisfy you?

      I'd prefer they called it a full short bed. That seems more accurate.

      A -Carpenter You can't get an 8' bed on any 1/2 ton crew cab. You can get a supercab F-150 with an 8' bed.

    Did y’all use a turbo brake when going downhill? Does the 150 have that available?

    Why in the first attempt show the odometer at over 2700 miles and then on the re run, the odometer was at 700 miles? Was it not the same truck?

      It is indeed the same truck. You are not seeing the entire odometer there.
