When I was 18 I didn't like the 850s because they were fwd, same with these v70's (transverse engine awd) but now I love them and would own one and fix it. These are the last of the real volvos to me, I just didn't see it at the time because they weren't as boxy as a 2/7/9 series, or RWD.
Being from Denmark I admire them doing it - and it being legal! So many crazy cars. We can't do shit the cars in Denmark, no ECU tuning, no getting more horse power without it being so expensive to have tested etc. that is will be easier to just buy a "better" car in the first place.
I'm convinced that's why we're pretty good at designing and building racing cars. A lot of people started out tinkering and modifying road cars and then evolved into doing it for a living.
I was thinking the same watching this. Me and my friends love all cars and do the same. Cars to be driven but built with all the supporting mods if no overkill to ensure they last and keep going with the extra power. We are luckier with what we can get away with even the USA is starting to clamp down on tuners

Perfect no-nonsense lap! Great driver, straight to the point car with great setup. I just love how after 11:20 starts looking at the temp gauges - reminded of my old modded forester SG9 vibes. My right eye is still trying to find the oil, water and EGT gauges even 5 years after selling my car.

Had a 2.4 n/a S60 with the 5 speed as a commuter. Man that inline 5 sounded so good. Bounced it off the limiter everyday and it ate it up, even with 170k miles on it.
Yes more Volvos please 😊❤ I always felt this generation v70 were better for some reason than the later ones. It's basically a facelift 850. The interior is more plastic than the 850s but I guess the R's got alot of alcantara to hide it 😅
That thing's a beast! Have an S40, 940 and C70 T5 parked outside - still have the original brochures for the S70/V70R back in the day too. And I'm a Saab guy..!
@Edizzle15 ye sorta. He had it resurfaced after changing the head gasket around the 400k mark and even our trusty mechanic was surprised by how good it looked even after that many kms. Besides that, dad always took care of his cars. Regular engine oil changes, coolant changes, transmission checks, spark plugs, belts. Original turbo was a bit rough and started to sorta kick dirt around the 500k if I remember correctly but it wasn't really a key component. Air Con died early tho at around 200k. Pump failed fully and he just never bothered getting that replaced as we live in northern Italy and it gets really really hot only a few times of the year during mid-summer. Made a few brake changes, I think twice the rotors, and ofc the pads a few more times. And twice the clutch/friction plate. Not sure if he ever got to change the flywheel or he ever got it resurfaced. After all it was just a very easy going daily driver. Not much stress or heat buildup in the components. And ye that's about it mechanical. He swapped the center console for a more modernised version with digital radio (back in 2010) and had built a 5.1 sound system with a big 2k watt sub with a custom resonance chamber using about half of the boot space. What else... Hummm. Windshield wipers changed a few times, a broken rear view mirror once. And not much else that I can recall. Oh ye I almost forgot. He had made a hole where the rear seats hand rest was, for his fishing rods 🤣.
Some 20+ years ago while driving on M1 from London to Bedford one GT3 overtook me,I was doing around 75mph and it felt like I'm stationary . Half a minute later one of those V70 police marked done the same...some 30 miles further down the road GT3 was stopped by the same V70
Sometimes in life it’s not about the latest and greatest. This looked like a blast to go a ride in. The sounds and body movement coupled with being a manual. You’ve got to love some of the cars which get built in the UK 🇬🇧
This is my favourite video so far this year. The car looks to be brilliantly set up, and all the mods seem to work well together. Considering it's a heavy brute, this V70 pulls incredibly well from 60 to 100 - I bet it surprises a lot of people on public roads when it switches from family wagon mode to BTCC mode 😀

He looked totally relaxed, was completely in control but 'on it' - and totally gracious about letting one (or two) cars pass). Really nice drive! Wonder how my XC60 T8 Recharge would fare with a full battery. Probably too wobbly even on air suspension...Got the power but not the poise
These cars sound so good. My buddy had one in high school with some kind of straight pipe cherry bomb home made exhaust thing. But it sounded like some kind of group B rally car leaving the parking lot on the way home lol
Volvo turbo 5 cyl engine is one of the best sounding engines in my mind. The most fun Volvo i've had, must have been 242 with 6 cyl twin turbo engine from 960/s90 with low comp pistons and xc90t6 turbos, 960 transmission, truetrack lsd, bilstein cs, ipd suspension etc. Turbo 780 was also fun, as well as the 960 95 was a nice DD. But I also had some nice 240s like a wagon 240 "classic" in very nice condition (was just N/A, but it was super clean and nice/tight).

My Black badge 2.3 T5 C70 is very capable in almost stock form and there's some very challenging but fun roads locally I've run and enjoyed so I understand the driving experience in the many cars i've owned both rear and front wheel drive even following the 110 Kph local limits so Nurburgring for me is the Ultimate experience and to that end Misha delivers in 4K, Landscape, professionally edited footage pure sound and vision.
@@tony66au Well, I have some clips chasing a Porsche GT4 and wet laps as the C70 is the ultimate car for it. Stock form they really suck tbh... Comfort and cruising yes, straight line performance is great. But for cornering you really need coilovers, improve braking, good tires, sway bars, polybushings, making that chassis stiffer. The rear kicked out quite a few times, and if it wasn't for the upgraded sway bar I would not have been able to save it. They are great on track but you have to build them.
Oh, man, what a lovely brick. Been a fan of these 5 cylinder powered beasts ever since I was a kid and my dad took me for a drive in his 740 estate (an 840 after that). Ended up getting a 2003 V70R with a manual gearbox for myself that I'm restoring, but I definitely want a manual 97-00 V70R in the collection right next to it.
Had a C30 T5 for 4 years, just love the 5 cyl and just old bricky Volvos in general. Cant wait to have enough scrap together in a few years to buy a used charming Volvo again 😊
Had a FWD V70R Classic manual as my second car and sold it once I got a company car. After many years of driving company cars I switched jobs and couldn't resist getting another 5 cilinder, so just got my hands on a Mondeo 2.5T just a few weeks ago. Man oh man did I miss that sound.
Was that the servo pump crying for it's life? You can hear it too when he turns on the car to show the width of the front tyre. Love these sleeper family cars, 850 V70 T5 engines are loverly. Color is also nice. The chap was also a great driver. High five for both of you.

Imagine buying a GT4RS and it still takes you almost half a lap to shake the massive old brick of a Volvo wagon that filled your rearview at mach speed within the first few corners.
I had a tuned saffron gold pearl V70R manual just like this, it was a fantastic machine once I'd given it the maintenance its previous owners neglected to do! It did feel heavy, but it was also surprisingly nimble and went where you pointed it with a crescendo of 5 cylinder noise. It shot flames 4ft out the back sometimes too... 😂 Very very easy to get in trouble on public roads because you always want to give it another gear. It would go off the clock if you weren't careful. On a derestricted autobahn naturally!
I have lots of similar mods on my 1997 Volvo C70 T5. In april I had the same encounter with a GT4 from Schmitz curve to Flugplatz. 👌😁 Great content, really love it.
The only good thing about the v70r being front wheel drive was that it later meant you got the all wheel drive, had they stuck with RWD we would have never Got the V70 AWD 👍
That btcc DNA is showing. And in my opinion volvo did the fwd really well in there early fwd cars i owned a S40 1.9 T4 from 1998 and it didnt act like a fwd car miss that car still had around 320hp

These older Volvos are so fun. The aesthetics are great and the brick-like shape is perfect for a sleeper.
And that was made in Swedish quality and not Chinese plastic crap Like the new Volvos .

I had a tuned saffron gold pearl V70R manual just like this, it was a fantastic machine once I'd given it the maintenance its previous owners neglected to do!
It did feel heavy, but it was also surprisingly nimble and went where you pointed it with a crescendo of 5 cylinder noise. It shot flames 4ft out the back sometimes too... 😂
Very very easy to get in trouble on public roads because you always want to give it another gear. It would go off the clock if you weren't careful. On a derestricted autobahn naturally!
I have lots of similar mods on my 1997 Volvo C70 T5. In april I had the same encounter with a GT4 from Schmitz curve to Flugplatz. 👌😁 Great content, really love it.

The only good thing about the v70r being front wheel drive was that it later meant you got the all wheel drive, had they stuck with RWD we would have never Got the V70 AWD 👍

That btcc DNA is showing. And in my opinion volvo did the fwd really well in there early fwd cars i owned a S40 1.9 T4 from 1998 and it didnt act like a fwd car miss that car still had around 320hp
The S40 didn't drive like a Volvo bc it had a Mitsubishi platform.. I've had many 850's and after that a S40. It was such a smooth ride
