So Carlos Ghosn was on probation awaiting trial later this year, until he ESCAPED TOKYO BY BULLET TRAIN AND FLEW TO LEBANON. He’ll be holding a press conference on Wednesday to “explain his side of the story.”
Let's be honest. There is no other side of the story. Ghosn is a greedy bastard who had no regard for his client base, his investors, certainly for his employees, plain and simple
I live in the hood. I noticed over the last 4 years, everyone has been getting Nissans. I suppose I know why now. The brand perception hasn't changed for a lot of people. In fact, many people around here are uninformed enough to clump most Japanese cars together, so Nissan and Mazda are thought to have the same reliability as Honda and Toyota. When these people see that the price of used Nissans dropping, they jump on that deal. The icing on the cake is that these older, used model Nissans look and sometimes perform identically to the latest generations due to lack of updates!
He's right though. Most major brands have an identity. Toyota: Reliable, affordable, trustworthy, albeit boring. Mazda: We sell affordable sexy almost-racecars. Hyundai and Kia: Cool kids on the block after hitting puberty. Dodge: WHAT'S AN MPG? POWER OR NOTHING! GOD BLESS AMERICA! IN YOUR FACE! Nissan: Rental car fleets.. and financially challenged baby mamas? 🤔
nissan just needs to do what dodge does with the hellcat and just stick a R35 engine into everything Edit: Everybody seems to think Im serious, guys I know the R35 Gtrs engine is hand built and cost a fortune. I also agree when you guys say use the VQ in everything.
@@derpyDingDong Nissan actually makes more reliable cars than honda and toyota. The herd sheep just follow along their media overlords that are obviously biased. Nissan's model line is old but the new product coming through and are industry leaders (their designs have been copied so much and now toyota wants to add awd to the camry). Altima sales were up 16% and neck and neck with the accord for December but donut "forgot" to mention that in their video. IF the plan is to cut incentives and fix brand image then Nissan will be fine. They also need a good publicists to combat the constant bias and one-sided stories coming out of the media allover. Truth be told, sales were only down 9% for the year with old models and cuts to incentives and fleet sales. That's not that bad at all.
Had them as a client a few years back doing their advertising and I can confirm that even they are confused at what their soul is and haven't found their audience. They are trying to cater to everyone with one car per audience, each with its own personality, making their whole lineup inconsistant and bland while betting wayyy too much on (soulless but high volume) crossovers, a new "design language" and force-claiming they're a premium brand. Was super frustrating at the time, most people over there looked like they were more into playing politics and protecting their job than actually benefiting the brand. And it's sad cause they do have some things going for them when you look at the GT-R, 370Z or their brand history...
They really need to listen to there audience, looking at what made them great in the 80’s and 90’s. Make truly amazing cars that are fun yet reliable, and somewhat affordable to common people. The frontier definitely needs an update please😂 we’ve had our trucks for 16 years now
Yeah, it's weird to think Nissan used to be a car enthusiast's car. I feel like most of the people who buy a Nissan don't care about cars at all, and just something affordable without it falling apart. I actually know someone who has one, but doesn't even bother to memorize the name of it, because she cares so little about cars. The sad part, is that even among that crowd, Nissan's don't really have a lot of appeal. Corolla's are already the quintessential "it just has to run car," by being admittedly bland, but also indestructible. Mitsubishi probably fell even further, but at least they have a slightly better warranty, and are about as cheap.
do you realize the "s chassis" and what you call "skyline platform" are outdated, old platforms that makes zero financial and strategic sense to bring back??
@@emzmotoworks chassis has nothing to do with mechanical reliability. what it does have to do with is that it wont meet modern safety standards and performance standards. what nissan can do, and is apparently in their future plans, is to make a revival of the silvia nameplate, but as a car made from the ground up in a totally different chassis on par with modern standards
Subaru: Still going strong Toyota: Weird Crossovers but still has the spirit. Nissan: Even weirder crossovers and slowly losing the spirit. Mazda: Completely Kills their sports car. (Meanwhile Miata is trying to convince others that it can replace the Rotary bros) Honda: They make it simple. Mitsubishi: Lets thier legacy become a joke.
I don't think they understand the Western Market, or at least are looking in the wrong places. Japan is mostly small cars. Not a big market for crossovers there
Nissan's quality is indeed going downhill, almost all their 2011-2019 cars are cheaply made, to the extent that you may think "shit, is this a korean car".. surprisingly on the other side, Korean cars are progressing so well. Koreans even managed to capture a major share from the Japanese automakers. Electric affordable cars I think will save Nissan.
@@austing4321 The last great NISSAN I drove is from 2009, the Pathfinder. It's manufactured in North America and it's a solid car. I'm not sure about 2005, but I can assure you that Nissan had some REALLY solid good quality cars until 2011.
the down side of Korean manufacturers is that they rely on Chinese parts too much and we saw that during the pandemic Hyundai couldn't continue their production due to shortage of parts.
The Current 370Z car is a perfect example. That platform has now entered its 3rd decade.... To put that into perspective, in the same period of time (over 12 years), in Nissan's glory years, we went from the Datsun 260Z all the way through to the Z32 300ZX Twin turbo...( which also included the 280zx and Z31 300zx in the middle).
By accountant's you mean french... Why is it everything that gets fucked (car wise) involves the french? Renualt/nissan, the FIA, the ACO, Pre VAG takeover of bugatti..... Maybe the solution is to get rid of the french.
KneeDeepInTheNext Nissan profited 3 Billion in the 2018-2019 year, every year every employee gets a bonus, Nissan employees got 3k last year, and all contractors got 1.5k, with that being said 1.1 Mill, ain’t shit to my company lol
@Jamie Reid And a huge amount of facts proves that business heads cannot do a better job than motor heads in a car company. Which seems an exception in the commercial world.
@@imacompoza I think there would have to be a balance in Nissan's case. Maybe proper business heads being involved with designers whom are motor heads would be a good idea.
You appear to focus on the sporty side of the equation. Nissan's emphasis on sporty types was never rewarded in the market. Car enthusiasts love to look at the 1990's lineup that featured the 300ZX, 240SX, Maxima, Sentra, and Four Runner. Nissan failed to realize that their future was the Maxima and Sentra and Toyota sunk them with the Camry and Corolla. Toyota realized that there wasn't much money in performance cars and made decisions accordingly. Beyond that, Nissan made horrible decisions with product placement. Look at what the Altima did to Maxima sales. You'd be stupid not to get the Altima with the big motor for $10k less. The sad thing is that Nissan will continue to struggle and won't be able to compete head to head with Toyota and Honda.
@@cupoli138 - You are bat shit crazy. Nissan is content to compete with Hyundai and loses in that battle too. The 370 looks good on paper but who wants to own one?
@@dpatrick4705 The poor treacherous "leadership" that has been purposely sinking the brand is gone along with their poor decisions. The cvt no longer where it shouldn't be, the transmission and the blister dash fiasco leaders...done and gone. The stuuuupid decision to not have an Infiniti pathfinder equivalent like the qx4 from 2003 until the end of the decade will not happen again. Hyundai, as much as I dont care about them, admirably worked their way by honesty, good work and reinvesting their profits back into the company which is the catalyst for good success. Idk what happened to nissan/infinti to follow such a ludicrous business model but mitsu tanked when daimler got involved also. Bad ideas, not caring and pos dishonest people will sink most any ship. This really is tragic. My dad had a Datsun in the 70s and my mom only ever owned Nissans for my entire life, considering them a reliable but fun friend. She got a 2014 Rogue that was a mess from the start and eventually sent her into a debt spiral when the CVT blew out of nowhere. And she loved Carlos for saving the company, but didn't live to find out he was plundering them all this time.
I mean, if we're all JDM design and engineering, then I think it would be fine. The new Supra is a BMW with a Toyota badge, which is why it was not well received. It also apparently has weird issues like really loud concussive wind effects with the windows open while driving, things that just shouldn't be issues for a car over $60K USD.
You're right, what they need is making a reliable car and better exterior I'm not complaining interior because it's already fine to me. If they insist to keep cvt fine just make it reliable

I 100% agree with you guys yes they are garbage or at least they were but I promise they are getting better, and the more you service it the better.. it all matters on how you take care of things
Not really. A lot of their money comes from economy cars (thats the majority of nissans out in the road - altimas, sentras) but they are the shittiest cars that break down before they hit 100k miles

Absolutely right about the Hellcat. I've thought about contacting Nissan about my truck. I have a 2007 Titan. I had a really cool hood put on and painted to match the truck. It has dual scoop openings. I put aftermarket rims with larger wheels and attached "NISMO" hub stickers. I put Nismo decals with racing flags on the side below the "Titan" emblem and "Nismo decals on the on the door handles. I also put an aftermarket grille on the front with a "Nismo" emblem, and to top it off, I put a "Nismo" racing decal across the top of the windshield. When I took the truck to have dual exhausts put on, I found out that it had a weird configuration where it already had dual exhaust in the form of a dual muffler with two pipes going in and one coming out. The guy had to remove the whole thing and put two Thrustmasters on, but I didn't have to mod the computer and it runs great. I added a cold air intake, which makes it sound like it's supercharged and ads a little horsepower, especially since the intake filter sits right underneath the output where the dual scoop intakes lead to. The point being that Nissan made their little Desert Runners and off road edition trucks, but they never thought about a Nismo edition Titan? Come on, there are plenty of people out there who would buy that. I love my Nissans and I've always said that if I won the lottery, I would be content to buy the nicest edition Titan, fully loaded. Now, I'm thinking I would buy a Ford Raptor Shelby edition. Nissan has had so much potential with the Titan but they dropped the ball. You also didn't mention the XTerra. I have a 2005 XTerra that had a radiator defect and somehow the two/three radiators contaminated each other and the transmission fluid, engine oil and coolant all got mixed together. by the time I got it to my driveway the engine was knocking. I had it towed to a transmission shop where they put in a rebuilt transmission and modded the coolant system. It runs great. you'd never know the engine was knocking that night. From 2005 to 2015 they didn't change much in the XTerra - once again a missed opportunity. A Nismo edition XTerra would have been bad-ass.
You’re supposed to lease the car with the option to buy the whole car at a lower price at the end of the lease. Financing outright is not a good idea most of the time, since you’re buying a lot of the car upfront, a fraction of which, will be lost in value the moment the car rolls off the lot
GameBoyKolor it’s true that you loose value when you roll off the lot. I sell cars, and it is actually a terrible idea to lease with the intention to purchase later. Due to the fact that leasing is based of a residual value, and that residual value is what you pay at the end of the lease if you want to buy that car out right. This residual value 99% of the time is more than the market value of the car at the time of post lease purchase. So if you have the intention of buying it, your better off buying it and putting 10-20% cash down upon purchase. I am in no ways trying to be a dick about it. It’s just how the car industry works, and not many people out side of the business have access to the dealership’s side of the numbers.
@@original__gmebvy You're wrong, but I don't want to be a dick about it I just want to point something out: The profit incentive for the dealer (and most car companies get more out of their finance departments than their auto ones now) for a lease is to rent you a car for more than the cost of the depreciation of the car for the duration of your rental. It is literally how that must work in order for them to make money. There is no conceivable scenario in which a rational dealer would adopt a business model of leasing you a car with an option to purchase later at cost to them vs selling you car outright. You will pay more in fees and residual value 100% of the time.
Man. I had a 1998 Nissan 200sx and that car took a beating and kept on going. I think I went a year without changing the oil (first car, didn't know I had to change the oil) and that thing still lasted another 15+ years. Loved it.
Pretty sure this decade could become the KDM era. They're making really good cars right now. The badge snobs can say whatever but Hyundai/Genesis and Kia are doing what Japan did in the '90s. It's time to move on.

RetroPhil82, I'm Australian so it was mainly Ford vs Holden down under, then a British touring car Ford Cosworth came and blew away our V8's, then came this certain Japanese car under Nissan called the R32 GTR. It was so dominate that it forced Australian Touring Cars Championship to ban AWD and Turbocharging, giving birth to our V8 Supercars. I looked up how good the R32 was and it wasn't just dominating in Australia, but also in European endurance racing and Japan. Clearly Nissan/Nismo knew what they where doing. @@Skullbrothers except that for a large part they are (as well as Ghosn). As soon as Nissan entered into an alliance with them and when Ghosn became part of the company, the quality of their cars went down the tubes. They both have pushed Nissan to pretty much use the same part suppliers as Renault (e.g. Jatco, makers of one of the worst, if not the worst automatic transmissions on the market) and make it so that it's difficult for independent mechanics to be able to work on more time-consuming and complex repairs on things that break on their vehicles. Just get rid of the CVT industry wide, the CVT sucks, it simply shouldn’t exist, period. If I could “Thanos-snap” 100% of CVTs out of existence, I’d do it in a heartbeat
I can speak from experience that their transmissions are bad. My wife insisted on buying a brand new Juke and it started having trans problems at 20k miles. I'll never buy one again.

Infiniti has lost their way as well. Nissan master Renault knows nothing about up-market cars and it shows.
Nissan's quality is indeed going downhill, almost all their 2011-2019 cars are cheaply made, to the extent that you may think "shit, is this a korean car".. surprisingly on the other side, Korean cars are progressing so well.

I wish thay got back to who they where. They really built some good drivers cars that looked like regular cars. They had soul, now they feel like appliances. Give us a new 510 at least, doesn't have to be the most powerful thing in the world but make it fun and affordable.
Nissan needs to sit down and look at their past and take notes

You must have shit credit/income if you couldn’t finance a Nissan. ...
We’re you trying to buy a GTR Nismo?
@@original__gmebvy
You're wrong, but I don't want to be a dick about it I just want to point something out:
The profit incentive for the dealer (and most car companies get more out of their finance departments than their auto ones now) for a lease is to rent you a car for more than the cost of the depreciation of the car for the duration of your rental.
Loved it.

I looked up how good the R32 was and it wasn't just dominating in Australia, but also in European endurance racing and Japan. Clearly Nissan/Nismo knew what they where doing. If Nissan made a car like our VF Commodore SS Redline (a car that's irrelevant now, but loved by many) like they made the R32 and 240Z, people would undoubtedly go back to them

When you let the accountants make the decisions and the marketing people do the engineering.
Somehow it works.
Nissan actually makes more reliable cars than honda and toyota.
Ghosn is an engineer, like most car companies almost all their key corporate leaders and executives are engineers and they are the ones who call the shots and make decisions. An engineer has to design within constraints of available finance and market. Otherwise engineers can never be complete if they ignore financial & marketing aspects.

When Renault took over Nissan that's the start of the beginning of the end.
"that's the start of" "the beginning of" the end... You could get rid of either quotation marked parts, and it'd still make sense
Renault never took hold of Nissan.
It is an Alliance, just like the name says.
They share parts and development costs.
Also, why does Renault release every year successful sports cars like the Megane RS and the Clio RS, yet Nissan does not?
Renault is not the problem.
I Agree with you on that Since Renault took over that's when Nissan went down hill.
I mean goodness there's a big difference when people are still driving early to late 90s 300ZXs, Sentras, and Maximas that keep on going, yet now have newer vehicles whose transmissions can go out from normal driving or even from going extremely slow over a pothole at less than 10-20k miles and that have only been on the road for three to six months (both my mother and I have had personal experiences with that with cars we've either borrowed or rented).
@@Skullbrothers Renualt is the problem there interior design and quality feel is so bad that it makes a Lada feel like a luxury car. There engines are not that great. Yes they have RS models but Nissan has GTR and Z that's faster. And a fast car and a god car isn't always the same.
Sadly Renualt now are making engine for Mercedes and there vans is just rebadge Renualts. And the Mercedes pickup is a Navara or what efter Nissan calls its. I fear that Mercedes will lose there value and reputation just like it happend for Toyota. PSA and Nissan

My 2017 Altima’s transmission failed in Nov of 2019 with 46k on the clock. I traded it in to break even and have no regrets.
Nissan’s circling the drain arguably as hard as Chrysler was prior to the FCA merger. To be real, most of the Nissan I see are Altima on a rental lot. And to add insult to injury, Infiniti wasn’t much of a brand when it launched as Lexus buried it as legitimate competition. If Nissan continues with this business model, I don’t see this making through the rest of this decade.
i think Chrysler was in far worse shape
What did you trade it in for?
if there's any good news here. nissan and mitsubishi co-own the company making those transmissions. mitsubishi has had little to no problems with them since the 2016 models. now they're full partners. so hopefully whatever nissan's issue is. it'll be taken care of.

i feel like there could be a video like this for Mitsubishi, their selection/quality lacking too
As Mitsubishi is party to the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, so they're a member of the family. They even moved their US headquarters to Franklin, TN, where Nissan's US operations are headquartered.
they need to hurry up and start building platforms and engines together. before its too late. sharing parts is fine. but they need to good parts. for the quality issue. mitsubishi is all over the place. if you look at the interior of a 2017 lancer, compared to a 2017 outlander sport. the lancer is seriously lacking. they were pushing people into buying crossovers by not updating the lancer. but the 2 cars are built on the same platform with the same engine options.
my parents got an 2014 outlander sport & for 25k the quality was all cheap materials & bare bone features, then now all they sell new is the economy car Mirage & just different variants of the eclipse & outlander crossovers

There are hundreds of R+D people in Nissan who truly get it, but we can only do what we're permitted to do- wether that be through management decisions or adhering to regulations.

Start with getting rid of their terrible CVT.
Edit: Additional note: I personally don’t have too much against CVTs, but I believe it doesn’t need to be on larger passenger vehicles that people will drive long distances. I own an Infiniti QX60 a crossover that comes with a CVT. It ironically is programmed to accelerate by ‘shifting’ like a regular automatic.
