This makes me feel better about all the problems I have with my cars.
Mine needs an engine swap or rebuild, transmission also needs to also be swap or rebuilt, so I got that going for me, and a few dents and a fresh paint job,
@@Rizer1231 one step at a time. My car used to be where yours is but only needs an engine now. Taught myself to do bodywork and swapped the trans with some buddies one weekend. So progress is slow, but I'm building it the way I want and taking the time to do it right so im happy with where It's come with it so far.
@Aupexx I don't have the space for mine or experience, I can do small things, but engine and transmission, I'll have to leave to the shop the I trust. But yeah, slowly and overtime.
I couldn't imagine dumping $100K into a Nissan 350Z. I feel so much better about every financial mistake I have ever made in life.
Does it really though?

Have y’all thought about doing a long term update on how the parts across all of the hi/lo cars are doing? I feel like that longevity of what you put on also plays a big role in the price
"This is the last thing it needs, right?" Everyone who has ever had a project car felt that.
It's almost uttered like a curse upon your vehicle. And yet, we can't all help but say it aloud.
Only to a person who is working on their FIRST project car.
You learn quickly by #2.
And by 20+ you know a car is NEVER finished.
that actually hit me right in the feels! 🤣
@@beowulfbelmont2578 It's secretly subconscious self-sabotage. We don't want to finish them. We only want to work on them and seemingly complain about how annoying it is that things aren't working/fitting right, but we love it. Every bit of it. 🤣😭
Unfortunately I've not had the opportunity to work on project a car (would be epic though).
I do understand the pain of something that should work on paper though, and all the parts work elsewhere... But then there's always that ONE dang problem that makes it drag on. :P
I know you guys have a ton of projects going on, but we definitely will be needing a new hi/low here again soon. Watched the Tacoma series at least 3 times over and NEED MORE HI/LOW!!!
Tacoma was great. Z cars was great. Subaru hi low was toilet water
@@allenmichaud1605 AGREED 💯
@@allenmichaud1605because Subaru are crap cars
If they did Hondas it would’ve been fun
Definitely need more hi/low. I'd love if they did like mini trucks or old schools.

i love that donut is honest about the condition of all their project cars and what’s wrong. i love that they never give up either good job y’all🙏🏽
I love how you went from working out of your home garage to having a legit shop and even a lift for parking struggles because you have so many projects.
Bring back Bart’s Science Garage!!! You do some, but his quirky way was great!!
I love how the cheap junkyard Ls is 100 times better than the crate motor 😂
For real
Why is that?
I guess they don’t make ‘em like they used to
@@UberLummoxgave way less issues and iirc did better speeds
How is that the motors fault?😂
I remember a while ago y'all made a video on all the issues you guys had with all the project cars, would love to see more follow up videos like this of y'all fixing them and falling in love with the cars again.
I don’t really work on cars so bleeding the brakes gave me flashbacks to my dad yelling at me and wrenches flying when I was a kid😂
😂😂😂
Love the troubleshooting. Nice job guys.
There's a chance that the water pump is over-pumping. Typically the effective range is about 5000rpm, but if you're exceeding that, the water won't have enough time to cool before re-entering the engine. You can either change the pulley size or goto an electronic waterpump.
Going electric frees up HP for the engine, too.
@@Kinannwell supposedly, I think it won't change it much because the alternator will just be put under more load and in turn that results in more load on the engine from the alternator, I think it would free up some horsepower if the water pump ran completely independent from the alternator and rest of the system on a battery. But I think going to an electric water pump makes the pumping of the water more consistent because it doesn't rely on engine rpm anymore. Anyway I could be wrong but that's my first thoughts anyway.
@@JuniorJunisonit would increase efficiency a bit. There's less energy loss from electric motors
@@JuniorJunisonwhilst you are correct in saying going from a belt driven water pump to an electric water pump will put more load on the alternator. The parasitic hp loss from increased load on the alternator is much less than from a belt driven pulley.
@@JuniorJunison There's no longer parasitic belt loss when you remove the pulley. Agree, no such thing as free energy and you can't argue with Ohm's Law.
There are 2 different reluctors for LS's crank signal. The 24x and the 58x. Make sure your sensor matches your wheel in the engine and make sure both of those match the ECU. Thanks for the content!
They also completely neglected to think about the wheel itself. Too big of a gap or a defect in the wheel = no signal.
Came here to say this, or at least something similar. Gotta make sure the reluctor is correct as well as the distance between the two.
I swapped a 4.6 from an 09 F150 into an SN95 a few years ago and had constant cam position faults. Turned out the cam reluctor on the F150 had several more “teeth”.
You're both probably right, but the custom ECU will be far more tolerant of weak sensor outputs than stock. They can be tuned to be road compliant too, even having switchable maps
@@mandrakejakemight not be the right place to ask but what makes custom ones street illegal
@@Baseball4mnstarz tailpipe emmisions when tested. If you tune for performance, you'll likely emit too much unburnt fuel. You can have 2 maps on most ECUs though.

I only learned of it a couple of weeks ago and love it. Gotta love the internet. So many gems out there still to discover.
i don’t think this is considered a part of the series lol
I don't know if Adam is more comfortable on camera now or just that in love with these cars, but he was great this episode, so nice to see these things ripping, I think we all love these Zs more than we probably should
i think it’s a bit of both. adam races and most donut videos don’t involve racing
Seeing high-low Z's made my day. I haven't been this excited for a donut video in a while

Some notes when testing wiring integrity, multimeter leads can splay the terminals in the connector and prevent good contact. You can also have bad wiring that passes a continuity check, but doesn't carry current when loaded. If you wire in a lightbulb to load test the wiring, you will be able to basically 100% confirm good wiring. It would be really cool if you guys tried using an oscilloscope to view the crank sensor pattern since this will show you the waveform that the ECU sees and you can see if you have signal, bad exciter ring, etc
Also won't show a contact that is intermittent under vibration. Can't fully take it off the list without shaking the wiring from one side to the other. And I agree a cheap handheld oscilloscope is really useful for these type of sensor debugging. Also the built-in oscilloscope in the Haltech Elite series is great for figuring out what the ECU is really seeing.
Easy tiger, I think this is way too advanced for the Donut team. This a group of guys that damage seals during installation.
@@FG-418 Ya the Link also has a built in scope and makes it nice tracking down and trigger related issues.
Possible overheating issues:
Try filling your system with glycol or straight water. Using traditional antifreeze raises the freezing temperature but lowers the boiling point of the water it's mixed with. In your climate, there's no need to worry about freezing temperatures.
You have a small grill on that car. That will restrict air flow. Since you aren't pushing wind at highway speeds, you'll have to draw in more air. Try releasing more air toward the firewall (directly ahead of the door hinges or further back on the hood toward the windshield). That and having a more aggressive fan.
James' comment about "ya know, donut" honestly made me sad. It sucks to see them have so many problems because I, and I'm sure many others, love the stuff they put out.
I mean it prolly doesn’t help them with creating content’s especially if they need to fix but tbh that’s what makes it better, we get to see them build it, talk about the issues, pretty much a. Learning process for us if we do something similar
Everyone has problems when building cars. They're not unique that way.
@UberLummox that's not what I'm saying, dude.
@@devonburkhalter9840 What are you trying to say? The problems they have don't stop them from posting videos. Problem solving is content and arguable more useful than builds that go 100% smoothly.
@@devonburkhalter9840Ok sorry.

4 piston calipers are great for track use but if u wanna lock up the rear u need less pistons cuz u exert less force to make all pistons fully extend and lockkk.
No idea how you guys are so awesome! Love watching this channel! I wish I had to talent for that!
So for the crank position sensor issue, I've heard that newer sensors are having an issue where there is too much gap between the tone ring and the sensor. Also car wizard just did a video about how alot of new parts he's gotten for customer cars are bad right out of the box.
This has me a little afraid to buy any newer car. After Covid I feel like quality on a lot of items, especially electronics, when down.
All the shortages during covid caused a lot of shady business practices to pump out supply. As a tech, I've seen the new parts being bad alot more recently too. Mostly parts that require electrical components.
Love these troubleshooting and fixing videos btw, keep them coming Donut crew!!
I think it just goes to show you can spend as much money as you want on a car but it really matters on the parts because some cheap parts are just as good if not better than some expensive and how well it's put together
Check in to underdrive pulleys for crank and water pump. You gotta slow the pulley down at hi rpm to cool the coolant down in the radiator
This has turned into one of my favorite series, from you guys.
Nissan and problems gotta be one of the most iconic duos at this point
Subaru and blown engine?
RX8 and compression issues
now that's a tandem!
Nothing problematic had anything to do with Nissan components.

Amazing! Also can we appreciate Nolan's 90s double t shirt fit?
In regards to the seal, what can happen is the garter spring that applies pressure to the lip of the seal can be dislodged when installing the shaft causing a leak.
I’ll take the JW kit seeing u don’t need it anymore... I’ve had my ‘04 350z since ‘06 when I was in college… long story but I bought it in memory of my dad, been doing what I can to make it true to the Z line but it’s just a dog compared to newer cars… anyways this whole series has really hit home for me. The trick to avoid overheating is
1. Remove thermostat i.e bypass it
2. Use a bigger radiator if it has space, but use aluminum one
3. Use a performance head gasket to avoid quick heating and it will improve your performance too.
4. Check all the clamps to avoid any leakage
Give it a try
1. Check for leaks and fix if applicable (use a tester kit)
2. Bleed

100% can not say how happy I am to see you swap over to the LINK ecu. I myself am a LINK customer (04 Subaru Forester XT pushing 425/400). Very happy with their customer service, how easy their software is to use, and just the overall ease of the product to install.
As to the "not street legal" thing, that is ONLY for CA. No other state has problems with aftermarket ECU's. I've had no issues at all with mine, and in fact am converting another car up from the OEM ECU to a LINK (2006 legacy GT wagon)
Last, the overheat problem: Ive had the same issue with a LS swap before. you may need to go to a 3 core radiator with a push fan setup (fans in front rather than behind it), and swap out the thermostat for a restrictor plate (smooth plate drilled with many holes to flow more, but still hold back enough to allow water pressure to be optimal). Going to a plate means having to retune some for your cold start, and having to sit 5-10 minutes with it idling to warm up. Add 5 min if on E85/e98
For the sake of not spending 100K for something you can't drive except on track, I do wonder why they didn't seem to just try a fresh factory ECU if the other one was just corrupted. There really need to be some less-out-of date emissions laws, though, cause especially the older stuff gets, factory isn't even better that way, especially if factory is *worn out.*
@@OllamhDrab CA smog laws/CARB is not about clean air. It is a money making scheme for the state, that also doubles as a way to control the populations actions.
If it was about smog/emissions then they would only judge a car on what comes out the tailpipe, not what equipment it has on it.
@@obiesunstreak2409 Given the difficulty of getting rational politics done, not to mention the polarization, of course what comes out suits the wealthy corporations and dealerships wanting to have a captive market and of course, keep people having to buy new cars when the maintenance gets too pricey. @@tbunreall EV's are not real cars in the first place, just glorified kids power wheels, toys that have no place on the road.
Watching crank/cam position sensors on an oscilloscope can be a lot more informative than a simple ohmmeter test. The scope can tell you if there is a clean signal or a noisy signal - which ECUs (stock or aftermarket) can't interpret.
Their ecu has a trigger scope built in. Very handy.

I'm not sure where to post this so I'll just post it here. Every time I watch a Donut video I always feel like I want more, like a longer cut. I think there's something to be said about these relatively short cuts; they definitely keep the energy high and keep the viewer engaged for the entire duration. The editing itself is great, the material is presented in a cohesive beginning-middle-end kind of way. But, it would be great to have an option for people who want a more extended cut that goes into more detail, especially on the troubleshooting parts.
Another example I can think of right now is the video a few weeks ago about the drive in the off-road camper that broke. That obviously took days to shoot but we only got to see like 15 minutes of the entire excursion, including the follow-up to rescue it from where it broke down. It was entertaining but there must have been a lot of content left out that I think a lot of people would be interested in seeing.
I don't know, maybe get on Nebula and put the longer format stuff there if you're worried about the impact longer videos will have on what the YT algorithm does with the channel.
Never gonna forget the joy i felt going home on a Friday on the 605 north to look to my left to see low car on the trailer going south stuck in traffic
Has to be the ECU because I have a MAP sensor code with my VQ and changed sensor twice.. but it doesn’t affect the engine performance at all surprisingly.
the problem is that it's $100,000
Your like the only person I've seen comment on this. No way they have rep wheels and it's a 100k car. Not that I care how much it costs or that they're on reps. But really? 100k and this is it?
I'm really confused on swapping of the rear calipers. With the increase in size, the fluid pressure should remain the same if installed correctly, right? Is there a proportioning valve within the big brake kit that needed adjusting or removal? Were the calipers defective? It also looks like you're using both hands still to throw that handle back.
Love the builds! Just very curious, and information other than "not the right brakes" would be appreciated!
I also thought this. That or the willwoods needed a good bleed and top up of fluid to work to their fullest. Who knows eh
Vroom squeak is usually a bad and scary noise, but today it was an awesome noise.

Should probably wrap the exhaust and the turbo and then even cut some holes in the engine tub that leads to the inside of the fenders that'll help with some air flow

I just wish when they make build videos theyd give a retail price for things, so if somebody wanted to do any of the mods or mechanic visits themselves theyd have a rough estimate of what it might cost, which could be cool.

you'll get more cooling efficiency in a car that never sees cold weather (like a track car in southern california) if you run distilled water with water wetter instead of antifreeze/coolant, which might help with the heat issues, but heat is pretty much always going to be a concern in a drift car
