Thanks this will be so helpful for my BMW f30 328i which have squealing brakes everytime I stop slowly. It's so embrassing at the moment to have such a nice car with brakes this loud.
I believe the issue for mine is the grease, and will try that before replacing the pads.
Apparently the other issue can be that they are semi-metalic pads and metal on metal will squeal because of the vibrations.

@@greasyfishtacos mine turned out to be front discs/rotors, replaced them and pads at same time and squeal went away.
A quick test is to run your finger around the edge of the disc on both the interior and exterior sides if you feel a ridge or lip it will likely need replacing.
