  • Here is an experimental repair of a very well used clutch basket from a 2012 BMW S1000RR with almost 55K KM.
    Symptoms:
    - Very loud rattling in Neutral with clutch lever released
    - Stiff shifting
    - Very hard to select Neutral
    - Clutch basket springs very loose
    - Play between clutch basket and main drive gear.
This is an experimental repair. I am not a certified mechanic.
The clutch assembly is a critical component of the transmission
and can cause serious or fatal injuries if it fails while riding.

Hey guys sorry I haven't replied to your comments! I have done a few gentle city rides and did finally get the bike out last weekend for a rip up and down the Gardiner/427 here in YYZ. Came home and opened up the clutch for an inspection and everything is still tight, smooth and running silent! I saw another video (R1 ?) where they use custom machined parts to shim the loose springs. This might be a better solution as the machined parts can't slip out...as my mig welded washers could. That's why I welded two spots 180 degrees apart on each washer/spring. There is a track day coming up at Shannonville on July 20 I might take the BMW and really beat the sh*t out of her...or more likely her me!

An interesting note: The input shaft bearing behind the clutch was starting to make it's aluminum housing out of round - from all the clutch vibrations no doubt - adding to the clutch noises and roughness. The bearing itself was actually in very good condition but the fit in the housing was slightly loose letting the input shaft end and clutch basket move. Should be zero play in this bearing/housing. Unfortunately BMW does not sell just the housing for the input shaft bearing you have to buy the whole kit.
