3 Lipless Crankbait Tricks That Get Bigger Bites

- Crankbaits are one of the easiest ways to catch bass. Throwing them is easy but knowing how to target big bass takes more effort. Today Matt explains 3 different retrieve styles that will get big bites when nothing else will. Adapting your retrieves will require changes in tackle and equipment as well but Matt makes it easy with simple steps anyone can follow.
Our favorite retrieve with the lipless is to hop the bait on bottom similar to how you work a jig. When the bottom is clean its simple and can be done with a light crankbait rod. As the grass grows up many anglers turn away from the lipless or modify their retrieve but if you learn to power through with heavier equipment you may encounter your biggest bass of the year!
The other two retrieves are easier but knowing which baits to throw when, will take your catch rate through the roof! Stop running bank throwing a lipless on a chuck and wind retrieve. Make some simple changes to your method and start catching bigger bass today!
Below is a breakdown of the baits and gear discussed in the video.

I just dont think theres another channel with this level of quality fishing education and they have the trophies to prove it. Great job
Legendary channel for sure!
Fish the moment is really good too
NOBODY does it better. NOBODY
How about they fish the circuit, and see how they hold up against the real pros? Because no matter what, Matt seems to know all of the secrets that none of the pros do... 🤦♂️
This Channel is one of the most informative and helpful channels I've ever subscribed to. I have many subscriptions, Lindner's, In-Fisherman, BassMasters, Megabass, ect. Tactical Bassin, these guys are teachers. You're not watching people catch fish and show off their trophies. Some of the other channels are informative, but with these gentlemen I find myself learning more about the Equipment, Lures, Techniques, and the Conditions in which to use them without all the fins and tails taking up valuable learning time. There's a time to Fish and a time to Teach! TEACH ME! Thanks guys.
Check out ‘Fish The Moment’.
This is the most informative fishing channel on TH-cam. You guys are great. Keep it coming. Thanks!
I find it humorous how some people think tacticalbassin is just some TH-cam channel. It’s very easy to be skeptical about TH-camrs promoting products to get an extra dollar in their pocket but that’s just not the case here...This guys is one of the best plain and simple. The methods are tried and true. Keep researching, take a year to learn the different styles and techniques and most importantly when to use them and you’re going to catch a lot in the process I’m telling you! Matt and Tim thank you once again.
Great video. Ghost minnow been working well for me so far.
Glad to see 6th Sense Lures getting some love. I really like their lipless, jigs, squarebills and jerkbaits.
Absolutely love a lipless! Some of my baddest fish have come on them. Also one bait you can fish 100 different ways and will always catch fish. Another great video Tim/ Matt. Thanks guys
Matt and Tim you guys give us information that's worth the money, and like the other comment your not just talking you have the proof with the baits your talking about, so glad to see you back Matt, I've been subscribed for two years and running, thank for all that you do, I would love to fish on Cali, one day with you guys. Thanks again.
You guys would kill it in the major tournaments
I think they'd rather teach us all their secrets
Ive never fished a lipless before and because of your videos I got on one of the craziest smallmouth bites Ive ever been on! Thank you so much for all your videos and knowledge. It has made me a better angler and has made me fall even more in love with the sport!!
That's awesome!!!
I’ll just like to thank y’all for the information y’all give
Ever since I’ve started watching you I’ve been catching more fish! Very helpful, best channel for bass education I’ve tried a lot of your tips and had a lot more luck thanks! Keep it up!
Thanks for this one. Thanks for addressing different stages...we're a bit behind in Colorado.
Ran a lipless on the bottom jig style 2 days ago and landed one heck of a wiper! Your tips pay off. Thanks for sharing!
Smashed that like button less than a minute into the video because you guys are EPIC.
Another great class as usual Matt
One of your best instructional vids of all time!
Thank you for this video you and Tim are the best on TH-cam keep doing what you guys do
More than any other, this vid from TB is money.
Now why would someone dislike this video I don't get people at all this guy speaks well is respectful is a class act don't swear in videos like he takea his time to make great content nd someone is going to dislike someone else's creation can't believe folks
It's probably because he's a class act, provides the best fishing knowledge on youtube(or almost anywhere for that matter) and doesn't need to make stupid clickbait videos and clickbait video titles just to get views unlike some fishing people on youtube.
Awesome tutorial Matt!!
Great video! But I was cruising through my FLW Magazine today and see Matt, with a nice article on glide baits. Way to go guys!!
Thanks Danny!! I hope you enjoyed the article!
Lipless cranks in dark red or matte colors is my go to spring night time fishing set up...the fish love the rattles
Love fishing lipless baits like a jig. I really like the yo-Zuri 3dr and the rapala rippin rap for that
Yep,rattletraps are definitely great search baits/toad smashers!I've ran into the same scenario with them falling to quick, and having to wind them in alittle too quick to get the desired action..Not sure if Bill Norman still makes their version of a rattletrap, but have a feeling you'd like it's action. They were relatively light, slow sinking, very fluttery, and good for working the bottom like a jig.Quite possibly a drawback may have been durability,as they might of not been much more than thin plastic..Great video on the traps!👍
Hey Matt and Tim thanks again for the great video! Honestly the best there is! CONGRATS ON 200k!! Happy for you guys! Can’t believe it’s not more!
With the breadth of knowledge Matt and Tim share it should be 2 million
Thanks for the knowledge!!!! Awesome video!!!
Thank you Matt for your knowledge, and keep on hookin up! God Bless
A+ content. Tacticalbassin is my one stop spot for anything fishing. Nobody else shares this kind of in depth information anywhere. Every situation, bait, and equitment you would ever need is included for all types of anglers. New, experienced, and pros can learn from the giant lake of knowledge that tactical is nice enough to share with everyone. He does include baits that anybody can throw on basicly any type of rod, that won't break the bank. (sorry if you deal with brush piles,) I'd throw a jig or a soft plastic in a certain spot to check what's around you, then if it feels clear then go ahead and throw a lipless. (or any sinking treble hook bait for that matter) again thanks Matt and tim for everything you have taught me over the years, you seem to always teach me somthing new with every video, and I am greatful for everything shared, past, present and future! :)
Just started last year throwing that vibration x Jr (w/ rattle) and the movement is more subtle yet fish love it! Will try the retrieve and kill method like you mentioned.. maybe even get a silent, who knows.. thanks Matt and TB!
I stuck a 3lb trout using this method on a crawdad color! Thanks Matt and Tim!
The megabass and 6th sense baits are by far some of the best in the market. I like the megabass jerks and the 6th sense traps and squarebills
Thank you for just explaining everything so easy to understand!! great job!!
Lipless are my go to lures
Sick.. I just caught a 6.6 on a lipless yesterday lol!
Awesome as usual Matt? How many casts just to make this ONE video to help us regular guys ? Thousands i bet. Thank you
as always great video always learn stuff from you guys! very much appreciated!
Very good instructional video guys.
Matt, that was some great teaching bud!
Thank you
I’ll be using these tips next week on our first trip to CL. Armed with LV’s and R2S Biggies.
Now that you have 200k+ subs you should do more pond fishing tips! Great vid as always!
that would be awesome.
Scott Lindsey_Fishing its hard for these guys to fish large amazing lakes and then back track to the ponds. It’s like t-ball compared to major league
@@derekdgarcia1 thats for sure.
That's true but some guys don't have boat access and are stuck to the bank. I love hearing tips for big beautiful lakes but it might be nice for them to spill some of there great fishing knowledge on a smaller scale like bank fishing.
Now that you guys are out here in Tennessee another technique that I've done really well with out here on rocky bottoms is casting it out, letting it sink to bottom, then slow rolling it on bottom ticking off the chunk rock on bottom. It's something different but it's gotten me bites when nothing else has worked
Tested the LV-500 because you guys kept talking about it, on my channel... the results were surprising!
Thanks for the tips Matt.
Great instructive video on one of my favorite baits. Thank you. Brian Bickhaus
Really enjoy your videos Matt. Great job
Ty for the info you really explain how to work the lures you showed me how to fish a jerk bait now to fish rattle trap no one ever showed me the yo yo techneek I was all was to burn them ty for teaching guys
Another awesome video brother keep them coming I have lined my Arsenal with your knowledge thank you
I use the Cotton Cordell bait bonanza lipless cranks at Walmart. The three main ones for me are the basic shad, red craw, and bass. I still haven’t caught anything on the bleeding shad patterns. If I were a fish I wouldn’t wanna bite them either, lol! I still have hopes for the “citrus” shad, though. It’s a chartreuse/blue back pattern.
Hey I think I saw you guys yesterday the 11th on a lake up in NorCal pulling into the marina next to the house boats. It was so cool to see you guys on a lake that I fish!
Really good info!
I've been crushing bass on a spoon and blade bait lately, but I'm thinking now I should try jigging a lipless
I grew up arround guys like you and they were selfish AF with they're knowledge$$ THANKS!
The 7 dislikes were disgruntled bass.
Water temperature in northern NY is still only 40 degrees F, but I tried my new red lipless from shore in one of the Lake Champlain bays and caught a nice 3 lb smallmouth. Thanks for your suggestions.
Matts only guy I know that thinks its cold enough for bibs but warm enough for flip flops SMH !! (3:00)
Thnx Matt.
Great Video. The lucky craft lv500 is for real.
I learn from every video,no more how long I've been fishing,Thank you Matt and Tim and congratulations on Hitting 200000 subscribers, seems like your growing a 1000 a day yahoooo 👊👊🍻🍺🏆🏆🏆
Good video just can’t believe you missed one of the best lipless cranks of all time the spro aruku shad 75 caught me more giant fish than any of these lures and I’ve tried them all for years lol but hey maybe it’s a good thing more for me!! Cheers
I use the aruku shad too and they are fish catching machines! If you haven't tried the aruku shad jr, try it as well.
Like 65 better than Jr in perch color always downsize hooks and throw on 10 pound Maxama ultrgreen
@@bassfishingnyc9983 Downsize the split rings and keep the bigger hooks
DanLewis bigger hooks weight down my life into the grass and most important when I throw bigger hooks I catch 60 percent less and smaller fish I use size 8 owner so when bass go to swipe at it they see the lure not giant hooks in there face and never loose fish if hooks are good and rod is the right action
Love the aruku but you can't go wrong with any spro lure in my opinion
Thanks for the great info, can't wait to head out and throw that LV 500 around.
Just Subscribed. I am novice to Freshwater scene. Thank You for nice detailed info !
Great video w/ great info!! 👍🏾
Damn Good video. Thank you for not talking slow.
Zaebis vidos great.
These upgrade techniques explains how they keep from losing so many baits like us bank fishermen with fewer rod changes. I always try to find steep bluffs, overlooking high points like piers, bridges, or levee roads.
The bite is on!
Great video 👌
You need to have tacklewharehouse do a box to sell after your videos, all these lipless in one spot would be sweet.
I really needed this one. Lake Oconee GA :-)
God bless spread his word!
My fav technique with lipless cranks is yo-yoing them, and I vary how hard I rip it and size of the bait depending on the stage of the spawn.
Have you ever fished the warpig? I love the pig...thanks for more great tips!!! I gotta try some lv
Hey Matt! What about bigger sizes? I noticed most of the ones you recommended are the 1/2oz-ish sizes. Is there a good time and place for the 3/4 class baits?
Really would like A tube fishing or dropshot video
They have a drop shot video Tim did it
If theres two lipless I'd add to this list they'd be a rattlin rapala and a spro aruku shad and the color for the rapala is shad and the aruku shad is spooky shad. Have a great day
hey Matt, do you have an opinion on the Jackall TN70 disk knocker ? I bought a couple of them over the winter but I haven't used them enough yet to decide if I like them yet.
Matt, have you thrown the floating rattle trap? Late spring early fall when you have thick grass with 6" to 12" of water above the grass works really well.
Some good info there. Never caught a fish on any lipless except for the RatLtrap. And I've thrown about every other brand. Wonder what's up with that?
I see one pictured there you didnt talk about, I've been playing with the Raid a little bit. On the other end of the spectrum in size I've been using the MB Vibration X Dyna, no catches yet though
Have You ever fished lake texhoma? Y'all would love catching striper.
The fishing on the east coast doesn’t even compare to the fishing on the west coast.
Be Happy when you CAN fish.
I got a TINY tiny bit of practice today. The wind basically blew me out of the area. I put on a sinker and tuned my reel in a little. Just jerking around with 3/8 oz sinker.
Conventional reel of course.
Any advice on how to keep from snagging up on the bottom? My lake is rocky and woody and I can only imagine that this method would lose many baits, but I'm still very eager to try this method
What do you think about the Quake vs the Quake Thud? I've had a lot of luck with both, but I haven't really put together a pattern of when one is better than the other.
Second lol...another great video...you guys are the best 👍
Good info. I know you guys use braid, but how long of a floor leader would you use in clear water?
You should try reeling a weightless, weddless swimbait on top, it’s a killer down here in Florida
Wrong video my friend
Ron Butlin what does the video have to do with me asking that
“I’ll circle back”….is that Jen Psaki in a hat?
Hey Matt & Tim, what is the ideal IPT for a reel you plan on using for lipless and squarebills?
what water temp will you start to throw a lipless in the prespawn?
Great video as always. What would you guys suggest for a 4 acre pond with alot of cover and shallow?
Mike Kraus squarebills, jerks and chatterbaits
Hey guys can I use these same techniques for spotted bass? My local fishery is mainly spots, and a lot of rock
Can u do a review on more 6th sense baits
Suggestions for a taper for a frog rod? Please help
Damiki rig video?
Matt/Tim do you guys use lipless for spotted bass in the northern CA reservoirs? I have never got a spot to hit one... Am I doing something wrong?
What is the lipless in on the bottom row far left? Thanks
I want to see that thing you just called a true rattletrap again! You took it away pretty quick but I'm no dummy but I could be blind but I swear it was a Cordell? LOL
Try using the pause button. lol 6:47
Is there a lure you dont like throwing?? Serious question if there is why please?
Can you catch bass on a LV500 year round hopping it?
How do spots react/like presented a lipless compared to lmb and smb?
