I was missing some until i switched to a 6:1 reel and started sssllloooowwww rolling. Something I learned from Roland Martin...reel just fast enough to barely get that blade moving. Been killing it every since I slowed my retrieve down with a crazy high hookup ratio.

Hay Matt! Absolutely wonderful instructional video and I'm truly grateful for helping me better understand how to fish various chatter baits. Really like the in-depth "why", for choosing a bait and color. Sure, I have moderate experience as a fisherman, but it's never too late to learn anything about lures and presentation. Too many professional anglers just assume we know a good bit and many times, that's just not true. Well done my friend, to you and your team and keep up the awesome work!

I just found this and I needed it bad. I've heard alot about Chatterbaits. I fished alot of smaller contests back in the 80s and 1990's. Then I simply took a couple of decades off of fishing completely, got caught up in other things, hunting, running long distance etc. Just recently I have gotten back into it, found the bug again and it bit me bad this time. The passion is strong, just bought another bass boat(2 now). Lots of things have changed drastically over time. There wasn't such thing as a Chatterbait back in the old days. This instructional type video is a God's Send for me. Thanks again and please keep up this type of video on your channel. Sonny Pruitt

Hi guys, I have been watching your videos for about a year now and they are generally awesome. They are always informative, with facts and techniques that work. I am 71 years old and live in central Florida where the seasonal weather changes are usually not as drastic as the rest of the country. This situation causes me some confusion in determining what seasonal techniques to use at any given time as dictated by weather conditions and/or water temp. I have used many of your suggestions with great success in catching numbers of fish, but so far no double digit fish. I would love to see a video from you guys covering some of the aspects of central Florida bass fishing. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

New fisherman here, only been fishing the last couple of years to get my son fishing (started him around age 4). Only been using live bait and bobbers or top water frog here in Michigan and I'm still using my first spinning rod/reel combo I started with. Time to expand out and start different types of gears, styles and baits. Searched for chatter bait fishing and loved your video, very informative. You've got me excited to drop some money on new stuff and try it out. This is the first of your videos I have watched and I'm excited to see the rest.

I had gotten out of fishing and was mainly into hunting. This year I got back into fishing and learned about the chatterbait. I love this bait and the bites it gets. This video has told me things about chatterbaits that I didn’t know since this is the first year using them. I love how you guys break down things in your videos. It is broken down in away that is simple and easy to follow. There isn’t any getting sidetracked and talking about something totally different. You guys do a outstanding job. I watch you guys a lot and it has helped me understand things that I didn’t before. I would love to fish with you guys one time it would be a pleasure to do so. Thank you for the videos and keep them coming. I wish you guys the best luck and God Bless each and everyone of ya’ll.

Awesome video ! I love the longer more in-depth videos like this, you cover so much information. You answered a lot of questions I had and gave me new things to think about when I'm fishing chatterbaits this season. I'm sure I'll watch this 2 or 3 more times.
BTW , I've noticed when I'm driving past lakes, ponds in my area, the Frogs are out, I can hear them croaking starting about sunset, When do you typically start Frog fishing ? before or after the spawn ? or is water temp the key for you ?

I just started fishing last spring. Not knowing what I was doing, I started on TH-cam, but was quickly overwhelmed by the amount of different options, techniques, theories, and equipment. I went out with a white spinner bait, a jig, and a green swim bait and caught fish. Not monsters, and not always bass, but I was having fun.
I have heard of people using chatterbait, and doing well, and since it was like my beloved white spinner bait, I figured it would work the same. I was wrong. I didnt know to put anything behind it. I didnt realize the technique with it.
Watching your video, explaining the differences between them, how to rig them, different trailers and why, etc. I went out and bought a different chatterbait (Z-Man Project Z, green pumpkin, 1/2oz) and paired it with the 4in Cowboy creature bait. I went out to where I knew bass were, threw out my spinner and nothing seemed to care. I then threw out this chatter bait, the exact same spot, varied up the retrieve and landed the biggest bass I have ever seen in person!
Thank you for making this video. It really does help us novice fishermen, who have difficulty figuring out this mess, let alone catch a fish or two.

@Donald Martin We catch drum all the time walleye trolling up on Green Bay. The first couple are exciting, but once you realize they aren't 20lb walleye, it's a drag to have to re-set all the lines on that side of the boat. Definitely a great fighting fish, a 5lb drum behind a planer board looks like a big muskie hit it, usually pulls the board under and then you have to fight that as well as a fish. The running joke is "your bobber's down" when you know a drum hit your buddy's line.

Great video again. You're flat out the best informational fishing channel on youtube! One thing I would LOVE to see from you is how you would adjust all these techniques you've talked about to fishing from shore (lake and river). What techniques just won't work from shore, what will work that won't work from a boat. Most every informative channel is from a boat, and most every channel from the shore is just a vlog.

I've had issues with a few not vibrating properly early in the cast. I've had some I had to really snap to get thumping. Which when you are target fishing that's a pain. That said I have gotten good fish on them.

Fat girls simply won't Chase Rockets. That fat beauty you caught on the rip bait that leaped completely out of the water a few vids back is pretty rare. They're simply to obese which has a lot to do with slowing them down.
I go mod-floro on C rigs on thick sparse grassy flat spread tailing piles too. I purposely catch the grass and slightly load up the tip and a few light shakes and pop I am out without the rocket effect.
I go heavy in the mud though. I'm like you I love complete control of that fat, powerful head shaking fish... lol.

Bassin NW503 lmao I'll buy one...
I'm glad you guys saw the humerus side of that comment :-)... I mentioned that at a club meeting once here in the central California Foothills and two guys right off the bat wanted to tell me about they're five and seven pound crankbait fish. When I say Fat Girls I'm talking about double-digit and teeners that look like Greyhound buses in the water. They are so big they get lethargic just from crapping out a 2 lb trout.
I always tell first time big swimbaiters if you want to know why we creep 12-inch Huds just watch a 300-pound fat lady try to get off the couch...

yeah, thats usually the case, I've seen big bass do some crazy shit tho lol. I caught my pb, 12lbs, on a square bill that had come just over the hump to a sand flat, go about 10ft, and I watched that fish come from the gloom behind up onto the flat, waking at full speed, and inhale it.

Chatterbaits is quickly becoming my favorite fishing bait . I’ve noticed it attracts the bigger fish more so than the smaller ones . I rarely catch a large mouth under 2lbs on it . Helps weed the out the dinks from the donkeys ! Your videos are great , such good information , easily the best fishing TH-cam channel . Thank you .

This video has made me a much better bass angler and made the whole experience more enjoyable.. if that was even possible! Being a shore fisherman, I've struggled with finding lures that consistently produce fish. I purchased several jack hammers and in the past two days fishing I've seen the number of bass caught double my average. Huge thanks to Tim and Matt.

I came back to watch this video again. Iv'e been using chatterbaits with great success, and I have to say, everything Matt has said, I agree with 100%. Started fishing in lighter gear and now I throw them on a Curado K 8.5:1 and a Dobyns 795SB. I've found this setup to be particularly necessary for smallmouth as what happens, is that the hooks rip big holes in their mouths and when you have a big fish in current, that also changes direction and charges the boat, you need something with both backbone and something fast to take up the line.
I pretty much fish it the same way Matt recommends using a Hud, and that's to jack them, then reel, reel, reel.

Matt, you should have a three "thumbs up" icon for this video, as an option for "likes." You kindof outdid yourself on this one and you should know that I "study" your videos. I am amazed at how you, intricately, you think through the material you include in your videos and, at a personal level, I so appreciate that and have benefitted it from it.... immensely. And, I thank you. I was, somewhat, of a late-comer to bass-fishing and you have really put me into a catch-up mode. No need to respond. Just "thanks and appreciation."

I’ve caught some giants on a chatterbait but the bites I get are few and far between. Thanks to this video, I think I finally found my issue. I usually just burn it straight in through all types of cover and even no cover but everything you said about different retrieve styles makes total sense and I feel 100% more confident in throwing a chatterbait. Great video!!!

Great tip! I been throwing chatterbait with very little luck religiously because it seems awesome. I watched your video and changed the rod to a heavy rod and did the retrieve like you said. I put the double swirl tail trailer on and 2nd cast I caught a nice 3+ pounder and I could barely detect the bite but you also mentioned that in the video so I didn't sleep on it and landed him. Ended uo with one more by the end of the day. Only went out for 3 hours but you changed the game for me. Thanks man!!

Appreciate the great educational fishing videos. You guys have helped me get back into fish after a forty year hiatus. I had no idea what to do with braided line let alone what the Bass where thinking. With your help I just competed in my first tournament and managed to put 55.25" in my boat. I couldn't have done this without help from dedicated fishing educators like yourself!

Best chatterbait video on youtube! Awesome tips and even works for us Maine guys! I went from not having much confidence in the chatterbait to really putting in the work and now is my favorite bait. My 3 best fish have all come off of a chatterbait with a paddle-tail trailer. Also waters i fish have a lot of pike and they love them too

I've been trying to find a beginners IN DEPTH video on fish finders. I fish from a kayak myself so that's specifically what I'm after, but there's doesn't seem to be anything out there. I'm talking where to buyers guide with reviews, how to use them, how to use the chips, how to set them up, etc. I know nothing and have no clue where to start.
