He grew up in India. Graduated from the Delhi School of Economics before going to Oxford. So he is an Indian with Indian roots. People today move around the world and take multiple nationalities. That does not change the facts around where you were born, where you grew up and studied for most part of your academic career. Mr. Kathuria still proudly retains his PIO certificate. I know him so I know that he is very much a global Indian who has once again demonstrated the power of India's academic set up.

What is funny is that they completely ignored the Army except for the passing reference to the businesses of Fauji Foundation. One main reason for the surge in Bangladesh economy is the low expenditure on their Armed Forces. There were other factors but this is probably one crucial factor that they deliberately avoid talking about.

Good discussion. India was bankrupted by SOCIALIST POLICY AND crony capitalism under NEHRU/GANDHI Congress party in 1991. True, it was congress socialism which bankrupted us.
But it was the same congress govt which opened up the economy. It was MMS who drafted the economic liberalization policies. It was congress which oversaw ~7-8% growth rates since 91, for nearly 2+ decades.
And the growth rate under UPA remains higher than even the current regime.
Under current regime, even bangaldesh and Bhutan have overtaken India in HDI and per capita income. Bangaldesh used to be half of our per capita income. Hasina doubled it in last 10yrs to surpass even India.
Under current regime, export to GDP ratio has gone down, despite all hype of make in India and PLI schemes.

Existing rail lines, roads across flat plains across India and Pakistan, very low logistics costs but Pakistan will build an expensive highway over mountains to trade with China at high logistics costs. India will trade with the rest of the world as so much growth potential still exists outside of Pakistan, this makes India not really too worried about not trading with Pakistan.

Your solution is stupid, you cant think without being so biased and india centric. Just come out and say we want weak neighbours rather than coming up with this deceptive, disingenuous, inaccurate diatribe of a solution but then again we can forgive you for being a hindutva bania but let me educate you. Defence spending and making peace with our neighbour is not our problem. Our problem is massive corruption, lack of leadership, incompetence and lack of financial expansion. We fix this we fix our economy. Imran khan focused on this and just when he was successful he was taken out.
Our defence spending is the lowest it's been and we have peace with our neighbours, the only exception being india. When india is spending billions on its military and threatening to take Azad Kashmir, gilgit/baltistan or other nefarious dreams it may have🥱 it is futile to have peace with a neighbour thats constantly making threats or have a military that's not capable in taking on any misadventures. First tell modi to stop making threats because this time the tea will be very bitter, that'll make india safer not reducing the military prowess of your neighbours.

I think what Pakistan desperately needs to put a lid on its elite capture is land reforms. Our current situation as a growing economic power has its roots in the remarkable actions of a grossly underrated prime minister. Our first one , Jawaharlal Nehru. He pushed through land reforms , pushed hard for educational excellence creating the first four IIT’s and brought centralised planning to the economy establishing 5 year plans which focussed on manufacturing. That built the foundation for where we are today.

If someone and brave enough expert come from Pakistan who tell us that what's the actual budget and spending on the military including all their expenses spread across the civilian budget heads, the amount of external debt they have accumulated. These are the figures which are countable in economic terms.
Then comes their corporate sector having 100+ corporate businesses and biggest real estate holders in Pakistan. Its an open secret that large scale smuggling is carried out under their supervision. Then to top it off all the key Govt's positions are held by active service or retired military elites.
Thats the core question and cancer of our economy. Very smart and thoughtful dynamic questions and equally good responses with enough examples. Best I like the q on what pakistan should along with debt restructuring as reforms to take them on growth path. Again here the 5 suggested reforms/actions were I thought very useful, including the last one.

Looking at forex reserves from a "sovereignty" perspective is no longer a tenable argument. 1997 showed Asian countries what a lack of forex reserves will do. However, money at the "Federal Reserve" increases the US meddling in domestic affairs.

Indians have an amazing relationship with Gold ... Currently everything households in India has their gold for contingencies situations... And really feels emotionally connected when a Country like India sends their gold to the Bank of England in 1991... They feel embarrassed or humiliated...as an Indian... Therefore after 1991 we did not return to the IMF 😊❤

There are lots of talk without a single step of walk. This is yhe the fundamental problen of Pakistan. They keep doing podcasts year on year without taking any lessons out of it. I am not economists but I think the major change which Pakistan needs to do is to be more likable and spend on education. Try to be good citizen of the world and educate your kids not to hate non muslims and think about development.

While the economist sounds genuine, he doesn’t have a good grasp of some basic facts. China has huge joint weapons programs with Pakistan. Saudi Arabia has deep, economic and military ties with Pakistan, USA and Europe the so-called West also have deep interest in Pakistan and Pakistan has been West’s ally for decades. In short, Pakistan is NOT FINISHED! Pakistan will weather the storm and come out stronger!

With so close relations with Beijing, why couldn't Pakistan piggyback ride on a rising economic behemoth like China. Are there any in-built structural constraints that inhibit any change? Or, is it because it's avowed ideology does not allow them to come out of the mess?

Don’t bring him back, he is not cogent and is not suitable for a mixed audience. He needs to narrate the story of the crisis in a orderly manner but I find him jumping from one thing to another without necessarily connecting them. He made some interesting points but he is not a great presenter, a researcher perhaps but not a presenter.

    • @saminshah2750

Faster you understand this better you will get.
All of pakistans economist except Atif mia who is Ahmedi are better presenter but with little or no economic skill.
Do you ever seen photo of Narshimha rao who changed india for better or ever heard Manmohan singh? They are worst presenter but smart and better researcher.
