Because there really isn't any difference in the performance of the N55 and the B58. Both are 3L i6's with similar torque and power. Most use the B58 (140i) because it is the newest of the two which is good for comparison.
BMW has always been my favourite and they did a very good job. Keyword "did" - past tense, they aren't doing that now. Older gens are superior in every way and actually look beautiful. The only good thing about the new M135i is the back, I can't really complain about that rear coz but other than that the car looks hideous.
The new 135i moved the engine forward ahead of the front axel like Audi and a back to front 911. So its not only FWD understeer but 65% 35% f to r weight distribution. The previous generation 140i has a proper 50% front to rear 50% weight distribution and more sporting rwd. The big mistake with BMW was that if they needed more space and leg room instead of destroying chassis dynamics and throwing away their rwd advantage over the competition, they could so easily have lengthened the wheelbase and overall length to create good legroom and boot space while keeping 50 50 weight distribution, rwd and chassis dynamics advantages which used to make BMWs so special to drive. If I wanted a FWD car that was actually reliable id buy a Honda or Toyota. Customers are only prepared to pay more for an unreliable chinese components BMW if it has a better driving experience, better balance and good steering feedback. So theres no point buying a FWD chinese BMW when Japanese Honda or Toyota cars are beter engineered to last longer and be much more reliable. So for me id look for a low mileage mint condition 140i and fit a birds bmw lsd handling kit and a celtictunning power upgrade. I like the newer car but it’s down on MPG than the B58 M140i. The B58 is a multiple award winner for a reason, and as for tuning a stage 1 map gives the older car well over 400 bhp which nulls any tuning on the M135i. On a roll the 2.0 just can’t compare.

i am sure mDe your mind up by now, but what did you end up getting?
Glad I bought the right car :-)) M140i in Estoril Blue...
Why is it drawn at the driver hitting the line? Yet the front bumpers are what are lines up at the start?
2:41 why does the older car look like its ahead at the launch?
The quality of the video is very impressive. It’s up there with car wow
It's the wrong direction BMW is heading, but one thing I like so much is the back of the M135i, it looks so aggressive!
How is this progress?
BMW The ultimate driving machine, in a straight line!!!!.
Why do they choose the M135i in xdrive and not the M140i, maybe it's stock on the first one but most of the M140i run on xdrive...
Because the M140i xdrive was never available in the UK
‘I think he stopped before me’...... he’s miles behind 😂
The regular new m135i front grill looks like it's been designed by an 11 year old girl who's just watched the Frozen films back to back.
Haha TGE‘s Jeremy Clarkson „Poweerrrrrr“ Scream at 3:00 😂
A great video. But it compares apples with oranges. I come from Germany and drive the BMW 140i xDrive. Unfortunately, it wasn't available in the UK. Traction is much better on wet roads than the M140i with rear-wheel drive🤓
Carwow told a different story on the drag race in the dry with the M135i winning. Also brakes are better in the M135i. The only area the M140i succeeds is mid range torque
Hey, hope you enjoyed the video. That's interesting, it just shows that depending on the conditions on the day that each car has its own strengths and both are very good in their own right (the same goes for the drivers 🤣).
I would also say the M140 wins on fun as well being rear wheel drive.
Puts a great big smile on my face going sideways out onto a road!
And sound, and looks with a 3-door option, and driver involvement with a manual gearbox option...
dungareesareforfools not sure about looks of the old 1 series but I guess that is subjective but sound definitely the old one takes it.
Well done BMW you win the award for fookin the 1 series. So much for progress.
It’s sad to see the special M140i design go and be replaced by a basic non-special hatchback design. Now it doesn’t stand out anymore.
It’s ugly, slower and bad in braking compared to the old one! Please #BMW explain me why I should buy “The 1” (135i) instead of the “The Real 1” (140i).. #make1seriesgreatagain
here in europe we got the ///M140i A Xdrive who would have smashed your small m135i to center of earth ...i even do not talk about the music of the B58 compared to the noise of the 4 pot...nice vlog thanks
And yet, your car is the dead one. That's gotta suck.
@@SampleTracks2224 Hos is it dead?
Why no m140i xdrive???
having driven the 2 series coupe vs owning a 1 series hatch rwd, lemme tell ya ditch the 1 it doesnt turn at all it understeers
Nothing beats a straight six bmw engine
13.6 for the M140i, I had a tuned 125i F20 that did 13.2, for a fraction of the price. I'm sure if you remap the new one it would be quicker than the stock M140i, with better fuel consumption
I like the newer car but it’s down on MPG than the B58 M140i. The B58 is a multiple award winner for a reason, and as for tuning a stage 1 map gives the older car well over 400 bhp which nulls any tuning on the M135i. On a roll the 2.0 just can’t compare.
The old n55 m135i stock is probably the better one to test against.
There's a test on TH-cam (in the dry) the old one won.
Were both cars using LC or manual launch?
Hey Keith, both were auto's on manual launch 👍
@@Leaseloco Wondering what method you used for the 140. I find that brake torqueing it below 2k is best when its a bit wet.
As an m140i xDrive owner, can anyone give me a valid point to swap my car with this one? Gosh, I hope BMW has something better on the radar for the 1series.
Standing start rolling race then a brake test 🤔 never seen that before... #matwatson
The new 135i grill is better and will grow on us all I'm sure.
4 wheel drive is the only way to go these days especially when tuning which most hooligans who buy these cars do.
Doesn't wake the turbo up as much on a long journey" dont think that's an accurate comment and the main reason for fuel efficiency increase, especially sat on a motorway at a constant speed, apart from abruptness pulling away I think itll be more a coasting thing when lifting off the accelerator.
Bring on the M140i, that will be something else.
Not gonna lie though, the inline 6 will be missed so too the v12s.
That will shut all the “its 4 wheel drive it will be faster in wet than the old m140i” specialist from facebook forums 😂
And that's what we call progress!
So in the only conditions that 1 series mock off could have won, it still lost...
I'm happy with that
A bmw 140i and what's the other things with a logo looks like a bmw ?
Got a 2015 m135i lci. No way I’ll be parting with it any time soon
Is it possible for just anyone to rent a strip like this to do a drag race or test you max speeds in the UK ?
Race starts at 2:36
no replacement for displacement.
Why didn‘t they take the M140i with XDrive?
Let's see the i140 vs A45s on your drag race pls
The dude really a professional hey...damn
Would like to see two xdrive instead of just the 135i.
I cant help but belive buying an m140 or 35i is a good investment now (providing you dont do 10- 15,000 a year for a few years) literally is no other car of this past decade like them.
The new BMW 135i is a joke😂
A great review! But you should have compared the M140i xDrive (unfortunately not available in the UK) with the "neutered" new M135i xDrive.🤓
Just came from the Joe Achilles video talking about the new M135i and potentially racing the older M140i. Someone needs to send this to him
I absolutely argue with that guy in the 140i🔥🔥 The new 1 Series is trash😐
Wow the Kia did a good job!
Great video lads, great info but what’s with the two caterpillars sorry eye brows 🤷.
Both nice cars. Well done guys
2:34 for the race
m140i has 100% been tuned. what a car.
Looks like the 140 also had more sitting water on the track at the start of the drag race
I have the showdow edition m140i 2018, ill never get rid of it😂
Try adding weight maybe to the specs of the cars, some more info would be nice
