Great review Joe. So far on both the saloon and the touring your reviews are the only ones that make sense. Weight is not an issue when you have 1000 Nm of torque. People love to hate on these things, but I think BMW M division have done a great job bringing this type of car to market with the EU regulations in place.
@JOEACHILLIES. I love the M5 touring stance and shape. Im a wagon man and i love it. All the kids have grown up and flown the nest. But i still love an ultra fast daddy wagon to take down to bnq. Great review Joe
Thanks Joe. As I read someone else say recently, I am increasingly disenchanted by new cars but this is the first time I have looked at an M car and thought “no thanks”. As Joe remarks, there is much blame to be laid at the feet of governments and regulators who are tying car companies in knots. But, equally, I cannot find anything aesthetically pleasing about this enormous vehicle. And then there are the bolt on screens for which there is literally no attempt at integration into the form of the dashboard. Similar comments from Clarkson recently and Harry M. Feels like peak car for petrolheads is now in the rear view mirror. I am sure this M5 is highly capable and undoubtedly faster than anything I have owned from M division to date but I’d take any of their previous cars over this 😢. Which seems so sad given we finally get an M5 Wagon - I should be remortgaging my house for one but no…
BMW have been expanding for 60 years & setting records by going into niches & not repeating themselves, this continues pushing that envelope, enjoy it, 1 & done before BEV. V10 had 200 miles range.
Regardless of government regs, the elephant in the room is that it's ugly. Especially compared to the RS6. Even compared to the M3. This car is even more lego than the M2
@@R8andGT3Fan most definitely. I'd love an E61 or E34 M5 wagon, not crazy at all about this one. I have owned modern M cars and found them a bit soulless
Another fantastic review, your comments at the end about the C63 and regs were spot on too (the new C63 is such a disappointment, it may be very fast, but it doesn't feel like a C63 anymore. At least the M5 retains that wonderful V8).
Great episode it mean looking car long live the V8.I can’t wait for you to test drive the brand new Porsche 911 Carrera T 2025 I think it will be a belter.
Great review and Think most people are now not paying attention anymore to the weight of the car! It’s the world upside down, but this thing is cheaper then the M3 here in Holland
oooooohhh what is going on here? I used to drive the E61 M5 back in 2008-2011. It was so much fun with that monster V10 sounding like an F1 car in tunnels, beating Lambo's and Porsches at red light starts, with a dog and a few mates in the car. I haven't been this excited for owning a BMW again in a loooong time. Might just have to plan for getting one of these during 2025.
It seems you’ve missed the news somehow. There won’t be any Competition models for any M cars in the future. So there will be just M5, M2, M3 etc etc. Also, just in case you missed it, it seems B58 or M40i/40i models will be mild hybrid or phev so they will be called M50(the “i” will be dropped for their ICE cars). The new generation X3 with the third generation B58 is called “X3 M50” for example.
Porsche tried harder. BMW was super lazy with this new M5. They could've done alot more to shed weight, instead they just plopped the XM drivetrain in a sedan and called it a day.
Here is where i disagree about the weight issue. BMW made this cars wheelbase longer (3 cm) and the car over all much longer (10cm !!!) and overall bigger than its predecessor to fit in the battery of the all electric BMW i5 in the floor between the axis. This is a huge compromise for the ICE/Hybrid models and the M5 that are unnecessary long and wide, making them at least 100 kg heavier than the combustion model 5-series has to be just to share a platform with the electric i5. Also BMW could easily shave off another 100-200kg by giving the M5 the M5 CS engine with 635hp instead of the standard M5 engine with 585 hp. The added 50hp could be used to make less powerful, lighter and more efficient electric motors, which in turn would allow them to put in a smaller and lighter Battery pack and still achieve the same total power output. If we are being conservative here, BMW made the car at least 200kg heavier than it needs to be just due to platform sharing with EVs and focusing too much on the electric motors to deliver power, instead of prioritizing the V8 making more power. They should have been smart and looked at Porsche, they prioritized the ICE engine and made the Hybrid in the 911 super light and only to assist the ICE.
The ICE/EV platform-sharing will be the absolute death of driver's cars from BMW. They're already committed to sharing a platform between the next M3 and the EV "M3" (which they better at least call the "iM3" or something to signify it's lameness). It's probably part of the reason even the current M3/M4 gained so much weight (and the M2 by relation).
Go to alpina after buying this m5 touring. They can uninstalled the ghastly electrical motors n battery packs n tune up the ice to 730hp n 1200nm torque. The car will be lighter 350kgs with a slight upgrade to the power😊😊
Great idea driving it hard with an agile little Porsche kind of silences the "oh its to big and heavy" lot when it's sitting there with a Porsche. Also how good do those tyres look ❤
Joe - I have an M5 Touring ordered - being delivered in Feb from Hungerford BMW (Brilliant dealership). I am a little concerned about the width - I love the ability to tow though. Would you be tempted by the M3 Touring over this or is the M5 Touring all round a bit more luxurious/good for long miles and substantial? I currently drive a Defender and think the width is pretty similar but will seem more pronounced in the M5 Touring as less visibility being high up and more speed! My other option is keep the Defender and just get a proper Sunday car like a Porsche or Caterham.
I always wanted to have an M5 Touring as family car…but we bought a Tesla Model S Plaid in Feb 2024. From Tesla it would be a stepback in almost all important aspects point of view: M5 is slower, way more expensive, way heavier, smaller package room compared with Tesla, very expensive to run as daily and way less practical when you have dogs and kid. Noise is the only missing item however I am allergic to speaker sound. (I have a few tracktool in my garage so I do not need one car for all)
As a G31 540d owner I really have to say, I like the new look of the M5. It's not better but I like it. I don't have the money for such a car. At least it is out of proportion, what I am willing to spend but it's really priced very good compared to the competitors. Joe mentioned the unpopular C63. Same price, lower class, 4 cylinder.... Maybe better on the Nürburgring but not even near as good for everything else
Like most in comment section I can’t afford this so called tank, but if this is what a tank can do 0-60 in 3.2 with two people in and look that sexy bar led light on grill like sorry but in the black with carbon pack be the car I will get once I get the money to do so good review btw keep up good work
Be interesting to see how close the 550e gets to this. No smaller but further on a tank and a bit lighter and how often do you press the pedal hard enough to get to the extra 250hp
Maybe too early to comment until you’ve driven a right hand drive in Uk, but how do you feel this stacks up against the current RS6? Great video as as always
Great video & vehicle I’m afraid to ask, does the leather get cheeper as the yrs are updated ? I’ve found this the case with audi & the leather interiors.
I need it
See you in less than 48 hours 😘
We'll be waiting for that "ring" video 💯👍🏿
You need god
2,6t... Nobody needs It, you WANT It. 😉
Take my money
Brilliant video as always, mate 🙏🏽
It‘s been great to meet you again and go for a little drive 👍🏽
First M5 Touring video watched!! As always, an amazing video Joe! What a car!!!
Thanks!
Modern day version of the E60 M5. It’s those front lights and the side on view that reminds me of that car. Absolutely love it!
Drifting round corners in a 2.5ton BMW M5 is just insane!

Weight is certainly a issue in corners and especialy while breaking.
Joe I love your reviews and your cackle when you're enjoying yourself. Keep up the good work and thanks for your efforts and the great content.😀
I bought my M340i Touring in 2021 from Tony because of your channel Joe. I might have to see what the bank manager is saying 🤦♂
There’s always room on the car market for another fast wagon 💪
Another great video, Mr. Achilles. You really have the knack of put us right in the drivers seat. Well worth the "weight". Pun intended. 💯👍🏿

Back at it again with the Evergreen Joe Achilles. I always look forward to watching you produce world class content.
Hit nail on the head with the rules and why this M5 is this way. Opened my eyes and now I am a little more forgiving for this monster.
absolute CRAP, 200k toyota camry.

Its such a shame that bmw didnt make the F91 M5 touring and F81 M3 touring those cars looked so much better than these current cars
The only pro you get as a touring is a rear window wiper-THATS IT.
G81 looks amazing. Get over it.
Bro dont stay in the past
Meh 🤷🏿♂️
Take what you can get or forever hold your peace.
Says everyone who isn’t buying either
been waiting for this review - can't wait to take delivery of the touring
Go on Joe!
Great video Joe. Well done.
Great video Joe and what a beast of a car!
Just ordert mine a few weeks ago… can‘t wait for it 😅
Another great review Joe. Thanks for sharing.
Great review, nicely balanced, thanks Joe.
Love your reviews Joe.
Great job Joe ! Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Good video, thanks Joe! Looking forward to watching the UK press car review
Oh that last bit in 4th was epic!
Great video Joe, awesome car !
Great video Joe.
Excellent review. Thanks
cheers, Joe, great review as always 💪
That sound! Despite all the electric gizmos it still sounds wonderful.
A yellow touring spec would be the ultimate replacement for my cream yellow 850 r wagon i fantasized over as a kid.
I have a 2007 130i le in carbon black, its a fantastic colour. Its really a very dark blue id say, and all the better for it!
Black looks brilliant on it

I'd love to know what you think about this versus the RS6 performance?
Amazing video as always!
Oh yeah, in that colour and wheel combo, this looks better than the saloon/sedan in my opinion .
Nice. They’ve clearly left a lot on the table with the engine for a Competition version, I’d wait for that - or get a Panamera.

No, the m5 f90 competition/ CS is the one to go for LOL. dont be stupid.
How come the new Panamera 4s and turbo are lighter while still having hybrid V8?

Porsche is just a better carmaker, thats it
Because Porsche did put more effort in reduction of the weight.
Why are you worried about the M5’s weight? Why do you want it to be lighter? If you want a track car rather go for the M3 or M4.
