There is so much corporate speak just to say, "Gamers are sick of us releasing unfinished games." What they are calling "ultra polished" is just the game actually being done.
"Ultra polished" is coming from the guy who said Skull and Bones was a AAAA game. He sees terms that sound good and then makes up a better sounding version.
Sick of unfinished games, yes. But the bigger issue is the DEI/"inclusion" BS; both in-game and in-studio. MANY studios are almost only hiring black/brown people and women, and somehow the quality is CRAP now lol.
I remember a time when you went to a store and bought a game on a CD or cartridge before that even. You know that game was 100% finished and 99.8% bug free, because there was no option for these lazy crooks to fix it after like there is now. At least when I brought Half-Life 2 Orange Box home I wasnt greeted by a 100 GB day 0 patch because they decided to just release the game 2 years before its ready.
Honestly, if they really thought it needed more time in the oven, I'm glad they decided to delay It that's good consumer practice and maybe Star wars outlaws was a wake up call to them

How many launch failures in the industry did it take for a company to finally admit that they need to delay the game to fix issues they "would have just fixed later"??? Studios have delayed games to "polish" them before, but they always painted it as the game was broken af, not even in a playable state really and they needed more time. Ubisoft sat there and ADMITTED they had the game in a state that they otherwise would have released with no qualms and made the mature decision to yoink it and fix those before a Day0 patch was needed. That to me is the biggest takeaway from this all.
Ubisoft really picked the worst possible month to release Shadows. Monster Hunter Wilds Avowed New Yakuza Game Kingdom Come deliverance 2 Civilization 7 And with Ghost of Yotei release in the same year. Brooother. They want this game to flop hard
I’m not going to reward a game company for doing the bare minimum after repeatedly failing gamers. Is it a step in the right direction? Yes, but personally I am going to need to see them do this over multiple releases before I trust what they say.
As long as they keep insulting Japanese people with rewriting their history, I'm not going to touch the game. Even if it is the most polished game ever, I don't care. After every AC protagonist has been fictional but were still be able to represent their ethnicity, the elephant in the room makes this unplayable.
Yeah, I've had more fun watching these games implode than playing the slop what they are putting out recently. Gaming journalists are baffled why people like space marine 2 when they thought it's a "360 game". What a fun gameplay loop that's for a certain market, and not everyone will enjoy?

Now that I think about it. What if the main reason why Ubisoft announced AC Shadows in 2024 in the FIRST place was just to somewhat "gloss over" their abysmal financial year with a huge amount of pre-orders from fans? They might not have had anything that was near a finished - state to begin with, but they just said "whatever, we just announce it, let people pre-order so that the shareholders get a calculation of what they can expect and then just...drop it" ?
Ghost of Yotei already made me completely forget about AC Shadows. There’s more hype for a game that just got revealed yesterday, than for a game that’s been marketed for a year+. That’s embarrassing.
If a 30 second teaser 2 years ago is what you call marketing. They just had an AC showcase to show future projects just like what CDPR did with the announcement of their new Witcher trilogy and remake. It's been marketed for 5 months so far, it will release after 10. So what you're saying is you believe Ghost of Yotei will release in April, after 7 months like Ubisoft were doing otherwise it's embarressing marketing. Grow up.

Around the time this game went into serious development their was a lot of cultural interest in yasuke with guilty gear and the Netflix show being announced around that time back samurai were super viral. Ubisoft has the mentality that female characters don’t sell and given current cultural discourse in gaming specifically around female protagonists you can see why they made the decision to have yasuke as main protagonist. I can see how they came to these decisions but if they just make sure the gameplay and writing is actually good people will play it regardless and the word of mouth will drive sales. Word of mouth for ac hasn’t been good since origins first launched and that game divided their fan base and turned older fans like myself away from the franchise. Ghosts of yotei tho 👀
@@Spoogebrofemales protagonists have always sold well, it's the sincerity of their inclusion that makes or breaks them. If someone creates a character because they have an awesome character they want to create vs. if someone is creating a character because they need to make a female character. Second, this is the first time they are using a real "historic" person as the protagonist. More than the Yasuke issue which I'm not gonna touch with a 10 foot pole, let's not forget they've been racking up L after L on their marketing on this game since the start. I'm talking things like stealing copyrighted images and when caught saying "lol sorry not sorry", to all the laughable inaccuracies in their "we really studied Japanese history and culture in depth" game (I'm talking things like Chinese architecture; animals and plants that don't even exist on the Japanese islands, an "authentic sword" being from some anime that made it up; that stuff) and then just yesterday taking a memorial for those lost during the atomic bombing of Nagasaki as a toy design element.
Yasuke is also a big problem that you'll have to mention. Because it's blatant Pandering to the Woke Mob. In every other Assassin's Creed Game before ACShadows, it's always been an Made Up Fictional Protagonist, and every other "Real Historical Character" has been a side Character. Why was Yasuke turned into the Main Character? For Woke Pandering Points that's why. Instead of an Actual Japanese Male Protagonist, we got an Black Man. Just imagine an Assassin's Creed game set in Africa, but the Protagonist is an White Man going on a killing spree against African Tribes. Ubisoft will never do this. Yet they did Yasuke.
@@WallNutBreaker524 Why does the main Japanese protagonist have to be a man? The other main protagonist is a woman in Japan - which has a higher potential to being an impressive story. Keep in mind, Ubislop is making this game so it probably won't be that cool. Also, sure, Yasuke is not a traditionally black man. But his story has a lot more unique potential compared to the normal japanese samurai storyline. That being said, I really don't like your reasons for despising this potential game. You should hate this game for its corporate double-speak when it comes to merchandising, its inaccuracies, its fairly lackluster graphics, and its sluggish gameplay.
@WallNutBreaker524 I want to agree with you, but when people bring in the "woke mob argument", it immediately discredits the argument. Because it's not a valid argument. The problem with a lot of media is not having people of different colors and backgrounds, it's bad writing, hypocrisy, bad practices, bad gameplay, poor graphics, bad character design, etc. OW has an extremely diverse cast of characters, and literally no one complains about them. There are other valid reasons to dislike this game or games like Concord Could they have just made an AC game based on an African country with a black protagonist fighting, idk, stereotypical evil white men in Africa participating in the slave trade or blood diamonds? Absolutely I think Yasuke is a cool concept when done correctly. I'm black and would like to see more poc protagonists in general when things are done right (good writing, graphics, etc). It's an absolutely terrible look to have this black man running around killing Japanese people in Japan 😂 He could have been the support secondary character and the Japanese girl could have been the protagonist and that would have been cool, I think
@@WallNutBreaker524a lot of ppl keep throwing around this “woke” argument, but let me ask, what grounds do you even have to stand on with this argument? What do you have to back up your claim? I took the "As such, our objective is not to endorse specific agenda..... serve as a learning experience." Differently, it felt more like "ok we screwed up here by pushing too hard, we are learning from it."

@@georgeh4171 They would be making yet ANOTHER big mistake. If they did so, then Ubisoft would be in deep shit now, considering how hot this political environment is. Just let Yasuke be. There's no point in doing this discourse.
16:23 I still can't understand why people hyped AC Valhalla. I bought it on sale-thankfully- and it was the most boring game I ever played. I was just waiting for it to finish. And this is coming from someone who adores exploration and being lost in a single game for a month or more.
Why are we ignoring Ubisoft's conscious decision to pander to "modern audiences" by casting a vaguely historical African as the main character? This was entirely avoidable. Contrast the reaction to Yotei which appears to be generally positive. It wasn't hard, but Ubisoft were the idiots who revealed AC Shadows with cringe hip hop.
Honestly, I don't think using a vaguely historical figure is a super bad idea, if handled correctly. The new Shogun show is highly praised, yet it also uses a historical figure, an outsider who winds up serving a Japanese lord, as the basis for ts protagonist. Shogun does change the names of people, of course, to distance itself a bit from history, but regardless, an outsider is used. Lots of stories will use an outsider/new-guy as one of the main character, because it provides a reason for exposition to be provided in a natural way. But it does need to be well handled. Like in Shogun, the main character is English and he often does or wants to do things the English way, and this in turn is contrasted, conflicts with, or leads to explanations of Japanese culture. And those details are handled well, it isn't preachy, nor does it paint one way or the other as being superior. Reading the book the series is based on in high school (way back before anime became pretty mainstream), I'd say is probably the main reason I've been interested in Japan for most of life. So, if it is done right, then using him can be used to introduce and explain all sorts of interesting nuances to the audience. But done wrong, where he is cast as, say, a samurai rather than an outsider, and one who out-samurais the actual samurai, then it won't work well. And, well, it is a game about assassins. So the game really should take advantage of the fact that he isn't Japanese to let him do things that aren't "honorable", that essentially make him more assassin like, but with consequences that go with that, in terms of how he is viewed and so on, and use all of that to provide all sorts of cool insight into the culture. You know, to do what Shogun does.
@toa695 Not quite. Some are hesitant because the lead actress is a twitter activist, and when that is the case it sometimes leaks into the game, making the character rude, unlikeable and entitled. The fact Sucker Punch were on SBI's client list isn't helping either. I think the ball is firmly in Sucker Punch's court, they'll need to demonstrate gameplay over agenda. Which to their credit has certainly been the case in the past.
@@toa695 You're missing context, it's not strictly because of her gender. Although it is more difficult to believably pull off a female action lead it's certainly possible.
They want to keep the “Yasuke problem” about historical accuracy… When in reality the problem is “pass the entire demographic of asian males as potential protagonist, play as a giant black man, beat down a bunch of Asian men” = wow such respect, such correctness
You literally know the game is not being delayed because Yasuke. The game still has issues with parkour fluidity, facial animations, and the weather mechanics, all which people have been complaining about. It’s also the failure release of star wars outlaws and the Ghost of Yotei trailer release that also had an impact
The most terrifying reason I can think of why Ubisoft would start acting smarter is because it's really on the line. Fears about Microsoft thinking about acquiring Ubisoft come to mind. The fate of the company, and perhaps the entire gaming industry as well, might rest on their ability to get over themselves and successfully make and sell a finished game.
They're still pretending not to see the great pink elephant in the room and I can't wait to see them spend more money only to fail MORE biblically. Sony out here taking notes.

With the broken Tori Gate figure, which might not mean anything to folks who don't know, but is extremely offensive to Japanese people and symbolizes a time in history that caused generational trauma, as well as being easily mistranslated as meaning the ruinization of their history, it makes sense why they pulled out of Tokyo Games Show. They SHOULD take time to polish this game as, if you look closely, the shear amount of visual issues, like floating shoji, swords clipping through the sheaths and hands in numerous shots, bad animation pathing like the sliding horse and some sliding here and there with the main characters. This game is most likely not going to fix architectural and problematic environmental inaccuracies, like rice paddies next to rivers (which would cause flooding and lead to damaged rations in real life), Chinese architecture and props, the oddly colored sakura trees, as these will delay the game even further. Ubisoft HAS talented studios. But they have displayed a disregard to gamer concerns, become lax with game polish and quality control, are making very amateurish mistakes, and are sabotaging their own products and their reputation. Here's hoping this will be a wake-up call.
When did finishing a product before releasing it become a wild concept? If this kind of thing happened in other industries there would be lawsuits. Imagine every vehicle bought having to go in for a recall after its bought brand new off the lot before it can be driven.

All they gotta do is change the main character model and VO, and they'd probably be successful. Its not that hard, or different than just having different character skins. Then they would only have to do main character VO again. Plenty of time with the delay to do that. Plus, they'd get a bunch of PR and articles promoting them, saying "they listened" and covering the main character swap this close to launch, etc. They'd win on multiple fronts
@@brennanIX Why can't Westerners admit they hate Yasuke because it breaks the mold of black people being portrayed as murderous or slaves in media? That's what this discourse is all about.
Trying to appeal to as large an audience as possible? Did they really think that anyone would have objected playing as a male Japanese protagonist in a feudal Japanese setting? Sure, there were confirmed female warriors at the time and there probably has been an African warrior as well. But it's borderline stupid not to at least include a male Japanese warrior as a protagonist as well, considering they made up an overwhelming amount of the fighting class at the time.
I don't care about the protagonists being black and female. But if you run a company and you really need a game to succeed, you try to avoid a controversy like this. For Ubisoft, this isn't just any game. And again, having a third, traditional character would certainly have been possible. But nowadays, it's often more about taking something away than just adding another thing to broaden the spectrum.
@Azhalan there are enough games to lists with black main characters and female main characters that have been extreme success. Yall keep trying to find new ways to justify having a problem with a female and black protagonist. Thats all this is and i wish yall would just admit it and be done with it. Yall did not do this when Nioh came out and it was a white samurai. Yall didnt do this with the other 3 female assassins. Just say how you really feel then go play something else.

@@coreyyoung6052 I see. Is it possible that everyone not of your opinion is a racist and a misogynist for you? I wish you would just admit that.

More than the Yasuke issue which I'm not gonna touch with a 10 foot pole, let's not forget they've been racking up L after L on their marketing on this game since the start.

There are other valid reasons to dislike this game or games like Concord
Could they have just made an AC game based on an African country with a black protagonist fighting, idk, stereotypical evil white men in Africa participating in the slave trade or blood diamonds? Absolutely
I think Yasuke is a cool concept when done correctly. I'm black and would like to see more poc protagonists in general when things are done right (good writing, graphics, etc).
It wasn't hard, but Ubisoft were the idiots who revealed AC Shadows with cringe hip hop.
lol we already have people calling Yotei woke because the protagonist is female now
Honestly, I don't think using a vaguely historical figure is a super bad idea, if handled correctly.

Jokes aside, gamers (and consumers) as a whole should realize their power as a collective. Complaining on social media is white noise for these companies. The real noise and threat is when they see their profits dip during their quarterly meetings.
When you start charging $70 - $130 for your games and claim they are "AAAA titles" it better be polished.

"Damn those gamers! They now want playable games at launch! The nerve!!"
"They could have a Concord and a half with that price....".... *chef kiss*
We should measure game flops in concords. For example, if this game flops, then it would be a 1.5 on the concord scale
