  • Here's the next episode of Three-For-All with 3 Chris DeGarmo & Michael Wilton Licks From 1991. As I mention in the video, I've been on a Queensryche kick for months, which started after picking up copies of the remastered CD versions of Operation: Mindcrime and Empire, and since that time I can't seem to stop listening to these guys. So along with the hope of flushing this Queensryche "bug" out of my system, we're finally getting around to checking out some fiery licks from DeGarmo & Wilton - so here we go!
The ideas in this lesson came from a live bootleg in 1991 when Queensryche was on the Empire tour and performed at the Rock In Rio music festival. The band is on fire and captured in their prime during this rare concert footage. and there are some choice licks hiding in this episode
The ideas shared here include a tasteful melodic phrasing from DeGarmo, an aggressive melodic idea from Wilton, a tricky half-and-half legato phrase from DeGarmo, a blurry "speed lick" from Wilton, and much more!
Needless to say, if you're a Queensryche fan searching for more insight into the timeless playing style of both DeGarmo and Wilton, you'll find plenty to sink your teeth into in this lesson. As far as the newcomers checking out the classic footage featuring these legendary prog-metal pioneers - get ready because these guys will melt your face and scuff up your fingertips.

A QR binge is nothing to apologize for, these lessons have been awesome! If you still haven't kicked it, you might get out the looper and do a lesson on how masterfully they create complementary rhythm parts rather than duplicating each other. Jim Matheos has always been a master at that as well.

Great stuff! No complaints from me on your Queensryche binge - I got into them when the EP first came out, and people in Seattle were shocked that a local band self-produced something of that caliber. Hearing Queen of the Ryche with Tate's amazing vocal, and Chris and Micheal dueling guitars made everyone stop and say.. "wait, they're from here?!?" They had more of a Maiden/Priest sound then, but the talent was so clear. Then watching them come back with the Warning, on up through Empire, they literally conquered the hard rock/metal world by '91.

DeGarmo and Wilton were two of the most underrated guitarist of the 80s and 90s. Not even close to 2 such great musicians. Wilton is still shredding today.
I miss DeGarmo so much! Wish he would come back and do a few songs I know the dude can still shred. One of my favorite guitarist of all time! There work together in the verses and the open chord picking made such an amazing melodies together. Both are amazing lead players although I favor DeGarmo just do to his vibrato and pinch harmonics but Wilton is just as great live! Love some Queensryche!! Thanks for the material man! Yeah dude - I've been listening to Operation Mindcrime, and watching the Operation Livecrime concert, as well as filling my playlist with Walk in the Shadows, Anybody Listening and cherry-picking other songs myself. They just have excellent songs that are brilliantly arranged. DeGarmo composed masterpieces that used the double-guitar attack to launch a sonic assault that is melodic-shred perfection.

Music Theory Late Night Lesson request for either this October or next October (2022): The Spooky Halloween Music Theory & Chord Techniques of Scooby-Doo Music Composer Ted Nichols.

I know you're a fan and I'm definitely a fan! Not sure how many others are interested, but those Spooky Horror and Jazz Flavors would definitely go with Metal and possibly Progressive Rock! Easily Rockabilly, too!

I understand why they did it, but they REALLY should have changed the name of the band when Chris left. DeGarmo was Queensryche... He wrote Queen of the Ryche, which spawned the band's name and he wrote at least 80% of their material. I don't enjoy one - not even one - song they have put out since DeGarmo left. SIDE NOTE: INXS should have changed their name when Hutcheson died.
Also, thank you for this video and PLEASE make a video about how DeGarmo is very unique in the way he uses modes more than traditional/typical writing methods, like pentatonics etc. DeGarmo's leads are unlike - uncomparable to - any other guitarist's leads!

Dude, I am so sorry, but every time I click on your videos, you talk for a half hour before you get started. I'm practicing. I don't have time to talk. I want to hear the licks. 😀

There are about a thousand TH-cam guitar teachers that don't give a history of these unique players and how they fit into the time-line of guitar history.
I'm DELIGHTED that David will do a lesson on a guitarist that I may have heard of, but know so little about (Frank Marino of Mahogany Rush is a perfect example) and tell me who the hell he is and what makes him tick.
The lion's share of Late Night Lessons subscribers want David to continue as he has been for years. About once a month (maybe a total of 12 times a year), someone asks David to ditch the opening history lesson while thousands of his subscribers (me included) wouldn't have him change a thing.
If you double tap the right half of the TH-cam video screen while the video is playing, the video will jump forward 10 seconds. If you double tap it 10 to 20 times (until you see David playing his guitar), you should be able to avoid all of that guitar history.

Yes i agree, i dig the uniqueness of David , he makes you feel like your hanging out with him and having a personal guitar lesson. I like his show just the way it is.
