@@joeyshears1483 That's true, BUT you can (and should) fix the Grelod issue with a single action without having to adopt all of those kids. So, uh, when I was first playing Skyrim I was advancing the serial killer quest every time I went to Windhelm and I wanted to adopt Sofie.
When I finally got the children’s quarters in my house and went to adopt it was super early and she wasn’t in her bed. SHE had been chosen as the final victim for the butcher of windhelm.
Getting the animated takedown with my ice spikes spell to save her was still the coolest moment I’ve ever had in Skyrim though.

On a freezing New Year's Eve, a poor young girl, shivering and barefoot tries to sell matches in the street. Afraid to go home because her father would beat her for failing to sell any matches, she huddles in the alley between two houses and lights matches, one by one, to warm herself. However, the girl is ignored by passersby as no one buys from her, leaving her to suffer alone in the cold weather.
In the flame of the matches, she sees a series of comforting visions: the warm iron stove, the lovely roast goose, the great glorious Christmas tree. Each vision disappears as its match burns out. In the sky she sees a shooting star, which her late grandmother had told her means someone is on their way to Heaven. In the flame of the next match she sees her late grandmother, the only person that ever treated her with love and kindness. To keep the vision of her grandmother alive as long as possible, the girl lights the entire bundle of matches.
When the matches are gone, the girl freezes to death, and her grandmother carries her soul to Heaven. The next morning, passers-by find the girl's body with a smile on her face, and express pity. They do not know about the wonderful visions she had seen, or how happy she is with her grandmother in Heaven.

Once he figured out he could buy Breezehome and adopt Lucia, he IMMEDIATELY switched to just roleplaying family life and walking around Whiterun with her, playing games. It was so sweet and funny, he would give this deeply exasperated sigh, and then explain to me how he can't "go adventuring all the time now, family is most important" and he needs to be there for her. 😭😍 He's super into action games and it was a complete shock how he switched to ignoring every other mechanic in the game. There's this whole thing with the orc lore in one of the books where each orc kid gets accepted or rejected by the different groups. First the main orc warriors, then the healers, etc. If they're rejected by everyone, they basically abandoned/eaten by giant bats. Imagine one spy orc just letting them out the back way of the cave rather than making them bat food. I literally always adopt Sofie and Lucia. My reasoning had always been the same as if is here, they really do need it the most. Lucia isn't sleeping in the worst town and isn't freezing every single night, but she has zero method of income except for literally begging. The other two boys have jobs and something to do, and its a harsh and unforgiving life they don't deserve, but they have a chance to actually grow into having an actual profession, and they have somewhere to stay at night mostly
I dread to think what Lucia may have to do to start working for money, and Sofie is in the same boat
I think it's kinda ridiculous the game doesn't let you adopt all four kids though, or at least send them to the orphanage, because no matter what you do, there will always be two children freezing and starving out in skyrim that you have to witness suffering every time you visit their city

tbf there's the son of two deceased legionares living in a barn. Like sure that's not as bad, but it's still terrible. Plus the Skyrim cities are only like a 10th of their actual size for gameplay purposes. I'd imagine in the actual Elder Scrolls world there's tons of war orphans walking around and neither side has the resources to take care of all of them. Plus these orphans were added as DLC characters explicitly made with tragic backstories to adopt. I highly doubt the devs meant to look any deeper than that.

Personally I always adopt Sophie and Lucia. Both girls really have a pretty rough life and as far as things go it stands to reason that neither one is likely to survive if they are not adopted soon. With the two boys outside Honorhall I always believe that in the end they have a future as they do have work, are mostly under shelter, and they are eating pretty regularly while the same can't be said of Lucia or Sophia on any count.
But that assuming I don't have the multiple adoption mod installed. In that case all four orphans gets adopted and if Grelod ends up dying through one of the many glitches Runa also gets a home... five is enough, six? That's just too many.

Lucia then gets adopted by the Dragonborn, who heard her tale and vowed to train her into a warrior. Lucia trains for years with the Dragonborn - and then finally - she returns to the farm, that was stolen from her, and massacres everyone on it to reclaim her birthright!

Sofie is one of the Orphans I will always adopt (even though I didn't for my recent playthrough) because I just feel really bad for her. I adopt her to save her from the freezing cold and also she might be magic. For some odd reason when I buy flowers from her she will also sell you flower baskets which seems normal, UNTIL I saw her selling 214 Flower Baskets! To make it weirder she appears to be making more every 7 seconds. The last time I spoke to her to buy flowers, all of a sudden she had 330 Flower Baskets for sale! I don't know how often this bug happens but it made me laugh for like 10 minutes 😂. I also always adopt Sophie... and most times, also Alesan. Oh, and of course Meeko. And I also always took Illia as my steward, because I'm not going to let her permanently hang around the place where we killed her hagraven wannabe mother (which I tested, and the mother's body never despawns, spooky that one). For the spouse position... I always change my pick for spouses, but I tend to pick the ones that can also become a companion. Oh, but Ingun Blackbriar is a special one, because by marrying her, we somewhat become a member of the Blackbriar family and able to take things from their home without stealing it, and since it's the Blackbriar family, I don't feel any guilt from taking everything from their home and selling them away. LOL

Whats worse about the number 1 pick is, not only is windhelm a freezing tundra, its one of the MOST freezing tundra's in all of skyrim, something we now know thanks to survival mode, which helpfully gives you a pop up message every time the temperature changes, and what it changes TO. And windhelm is one of only a hand-full of regions that pretty consistently stays around treachorously cold. The only other place i know that almost ALWAYS sticks around that range... *Is the pale AKA winterhold*

I always adopt Sophie and Alessan for the exact reason you stated. Our of all the orphans, they have it the hardest. I never considered the orphans at orphanage because of that and i never took the time to talk to them.

@@ryhi5 Mehrunes Dagon is unironically more sympathetic than Molag Bal because he just wants to smash everything. Which is still pretty bad, just not as bad as anything Molag Bal will do to you.

@@TheKolboShow I compare Mehrunes Dagon to Beerus from DBZ. He represents a necessary evil. Things need to be destroyed in order for new things to be created. out with the old in with the new. Doesn't change the fact that Dagon is an Asshole, but compare him to Molag Bal. Where there's no purpose or necessity to Molag Bal's cruelty except to satisfy his own amusement.

They really need a mod where the children grow up (either naturally or magically). Also, making them adults or teens is a rather creative way to remove their essential status. *evil smirk*

If you can mod your game, Dragon's Keep has a home for six kids plus an academy with room for many more orphans or even for some of those children who need some help or straightening out, whose parents won't or can't. Has some neat other features like a friendly dragon too.

I've seen Lucia sweep the floors behind the counter at the bar. So she does make some money. Also i give her money every time i see her.
