Not surprised...It took me a while to figure it out and we had so much we were trying to do in 1 day with only a 4hr sports shoot...but I use Canon cameras often so I knew something wasn't right when I was adjusting the focus system sensitivity and not noticing a difference in performance so at that point I had to investigate. Very clear and concise, honest and informative review. Thank you! Not like many biased "reviewers", like PetaPixel guys, for example, according to whom it's a rather mediocre camera lagging behind the competition which is clear falsehood. It's quite clear Canon R5 Mark II is going to be one of the best-selling cameras for wildlife, sports, weddings photographers especially, most probably even the best-selling camera of the near future.

    After a long hiatus, I upgraded my old 7D to enter the mirrorless world last year with the R6m2 and I didn't think there was any way Canon could entice me to throw another 4.3K at them...but the R5m2 is going to do exactly that.

      @@learningcameras for sure and it will make a great second body to compliment the R5m2. I just wasn't prepared for the sheer number of upgrades Canon was going to offer: 45MP BSI, Action Priority focusing, implementing CLog 2 (which I was convinced they'd gate to their Cinema line), full sized HDMI (which everyone else had done but thought maybe Canon had just dug in their heels here). One of my favorite lenses to use is the RF 50 1.2 but I can tell on my R6m2 the limiting factor is the sensor. I'm looking forward to seeing all the additional resolution the lens is capable of on the R5m2's sensor.

    Thank you for your first impressions. Once you have the chance to do some testing I would be delighted to learn:
    - Are the AF possibilities/features also 1:1 avaliable in video mode? If not which are missing?
    - Is the 4k 120fps 8k downsampled, or 4K crop or 8K line-skipped/binned?
    - Are 10Bit 422 codecs available with Canon colors or only in LOG formats?
    - Does the electronic shutter allow exposures > 0,5 sec?
    These are the main issues I have with my R5 and would like to see them solved before upgrading.
    And btw. when you test overheating, give the R5 MII a chance and do not block the airflow inlet in the bottom. 🙂

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So all the AF possibilities and features are available in 1:1 but 1:1 is not a true 1:1...it's still shooting a 16x9 video and just chopping off the sides so I would rather do this in post. Canon doesn't allow native multiple aspect ratios (open gate).
      4k is only oversampled up to 30fps...everything else is binned or line skipped. 4k60 in the APSC crop mode is oversampled
      10bit 422 is only in LOG and HDRPQ
      Not sure on the slow exposures on the E shutter
      Hope that helps! Yeah, didn't have tripods with me to mount them but there is also an inlet on the side and my original R5 has no inlets so still surprised it overheated faster than the R5. Also worried some tripods/rigs would block that bottom airflow inlet anyway

    Hey Dan, could you confirm if the 8K oversampling is limited to 4K 30p only? Since this camera is able to record in 8K 60p I thought 4K 60p oversampled is a given but I saw in an article that 4K 60p on the R5 Mark II is subsampled. If so that seems to be the only drawback this camera has at this price. Its a great iteration otherwise with all the right incremental updates. Great video as always. 😊

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey...you do get oversampling in 4k60 in the APSC crop mode but full frame 4k60 is not oversampled. The R1 which is a 6k sensor will oversample 4k60. It's more of a drawback to having a high resolution sensor...it's just too much information to oversample. The A7RV can't oversample at all in full frame but lower resolution cameras like the Canon R1, R6II, & Sony A9III can oversample 4k60 since they only have 24mp sensors. I don't know of any 45mp+ camera that can oversample 4k60 yet in full frame and it would probably overheat quickly

      Thanks!! So the A7RV works as a backup camera, especially for 4k24, but the issue with it is no 4k60 full frame or any higher frame rates. I have had my A7r lll for the last six years. but I was looking back at some of my images from my Canon 5Dlll witch I still own. and there is something about the colors and overall look of the images that I really like. and this R5ll has me actually considering Canon again. and I still have my Canon mount glass. so I am wondering how older glass works with the R5 ll. and some of my lenses are Tamron and Sigma. because when adapted to the Sony A7r lll they do not focus as good as native glass. and the focus points are limited and they don't video focus. but my biggest question is how does the colors of the R5 ll compare to the newer Sony cameras like the A7rV or the A1. The main reason I find myself sticking to Sony is because of all the high quality 3rd party glass.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Awesome! So I've tested EF glass adapted to my original R5 and they work extremely well with the adapter. Canon's adapter is my favorite adapter and they also have versions with built in ND which is pretty cool if you shoot video. The focus works very well although keep in mind most old lenses aren't tuned for video so they can be a bit more jumpy but Canon will focus for video. Focusing will work much better with EF adapted to the R5 than Sony's adapters.
      I think Sony finally fixed color issues with the A7RV which actually has a newer color profile to the A1. I still prefer Canon's colors personally but I think it's more of a preference these days and the color issues that Sony had early on are gone so you could go either way.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey! So you definitely got spoiled with the D810 and DR because that camera is still among the top for image quality. Canon went through a rough patch with dynamic range for a while but they are finally on the other side. They still tend to trail a bit compared to the Sony & Nikon sensors but not by enough to be a big issue. The R5II seemed to handle pushing/pulling no problem but I was mostly shooting indoors and higher ISO so not a great example. But I have used the original R5 which was great with dynamic range (though slightly behind the Sony A7RV) and I will have the R5II back in my hands this week for better dynamic range tests for a full review

    Great Video! On the overheating test, the Mark ii 's heat dissipation system (without the fan grip) is from the bottom of the camera up and out the side port. So basically by setting it on the ledge of the pool, you blocked the vent and what, if any air that did move thru the camera was superheated but the concrete it was sitting on as I have shot all through Nevada and by 10 am everything is 100+ degrees just sitting in the sunlight... Do the same test only on a tripod/mini pod, etc... (I know you didn't have much time at all, so I'm not pointing a finger, just pointing out what might have happened during the quick test.) 🔨🔨🔨

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's not crippling. I think there is maybe 1 camera right now that can even oversample 4k60 from 8k and that camera overheats very quickly when doing it. Crippling is when Canon has the ability to do something but pulls it intentionally to save it for a higher priced item. While the R1 can oversample in 4k60, it only has a 6k 24mp sensor so it's MUCH easier to do that. Canon's R6II has oversampled 4k60 so obviously Canon doesn't cripple this ability. There are legitimate downsides to having too many pixels for video. It will actually oversample using the APSC crop mode in 4k60 and Sony's A7RV can't even shoot full frame 4k60 at all!

    • @playlistneo1584
      @playlistneo1584 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@learningcameras Fair enough. However for example the sony A1 doesn't oversample it's 4k from 8k in FF mode. Yet if I remember correctly Gerald Undone stated on his review or in some comparison with that camera that the 4k quality on A1 camera is similar to the A7S3 while R5M1 LQ 4K was considerably worse than A7S3 in your review. So i guess there must be a variety of methods for aquiring a 4k image from 8k image when not doing oversampling if the results seem to vary considerably. I think the difference in A1 4K and R5M1 LQ 4K is larger than the megapixel difference between those cameras could explain if A1 is as good as a7S3. So i wonder could canon have improved their LQ 4K image from the R5 mark1 even without supersampling so that it would at least be at the A7S3 level?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@playlistneo1584 The reason the A1 pulls that off is it has exactly 2x the pixels it needs for 4k so it can downsample with much better quality without having to oversample. The A7RV does something similar in 4k60 where it does almost a 1.3x crop to go from 61mp to around 50mp where it can do that same downsample. The R5 uses oversampling which offers more detail but takes more processing power so just a trade off.

      I mean, before this flip screen, the screen was literally stuck to the back of the camera which you can absolutely STILL DO! So all a flip screen did is give you the option to flip out and to protect your screen by flipping it closed. Also, a tilt only screen sounds like a decent option but tilt ONLY works if you are keeping the camera horizontal. Try shooting a vertical image low to the ground or high up in the air with a tilt screen which is a mandatory thing for us car photographers...it's impossible.
