Excellent comparison, very honest and without taking sides. Though to be fair, shooting a person in an empty parking lot is about as simple of an AF case that a camera would ever encounter. I personally shoot motorsports (motorcycle racing to be specific), and that REALLY puts a workout on the AF system. Because unlike people, bikes all look completely different from one another. I owned the R6, R6ii and most recently the R3 (all with native RF lenses), and with each upgrade I saw a marked improvement in subject acquisition speed and tracking consistency (not loosing the focus as subject gets very close). I ordered the R5ii this morning and it should be getting delivered in less than 12 hours. If I see as big of an improvement as going from the R6 to R6ii, I will be ecstatic. I really don't care for the high megapixels, so I might eventually go with R1 come November if that has an even more improved AF system. Like I said, AF performance is everything in racing photography as everything happens so dang fast!

Any update? How big was the improvement?

    • @Uninfluenceable

@@davidtan8984 Absolutely in-sane! Way bigger of an upgrade then I even expected. Without a doubt the single biggest improvement to AF the RF system has received to date. When I first switched to RF with the R6, I'd say about 60-70% of my shots were in focus (again, keep in mind I'm only talking about motorsport shots here), usually as the bike got closer (filling the frame), at wide open apertures the R6 would loose focus, almost always. The R6II/R3 saw a marked improvement where maybe 75-85% of shots were pin sharp but still some random focusing anomalies would occur at times. With the R5II, I don't want to go as far as saying 100% of shots are nailed, but at times it sure feels like it. Even after owning the camera for 3 months now it still amazes me when I sit down at my PC to cull through the pictures. At this point, I have zero intentions on going with the R1 as the R5II completely meets my needs. Do keep in mind that I'm using solely native RF glass (namely the RF135mm, RF70-200mm and RF100-500) with the fast linear focus motors. If you're still on EF or adapting 3rd party lenses, then I doubt you'll get perfect hit rate as those lenses' focusing motors just cannot keep the reaction time of the new cameras.

    hi David
thank you for your tests !
I'm looking forward to getting my r5 mkii...should arrive next Tuesday :)
I hope that the improved AF combined with facial recognition will help substantially my not so fast focusing primes in sports shooting situations. ( in family pictures as well )
with the 85 1.2 for instance, if the AF starts to hunt, it's focuzilla guaranted...
as I shoot sports indoors, I had lots of banding with my r6 mkii...so I had to stick with the EFC shutter...and 12 fps.
it seems that the r5 mkii now offers anti flicker with the ES .
    30 fps endlich !

For example, tracking the "ESC" key on the keyboard. Or some part of another non-human or non-animal (in general, not the one the camera is programmed to recognize) object?

Also, one of the reviews of the non production model talked about the R1’s autofocus system being superior to the R5ii as well as the normal profile 4K video which sounds just like the R5 compared to the R3. This test shows it well. Nikon's AF is good, but the darn preview makes it look weak. There have been so many times I would think my shot would not be in focus because the box lags but the shots are perfect. But I feel you should have compared the R5II to the Z8 not the Z6III as the Z8 has a fully stacked sensor and the AF is a tad faster.

    Nice performance from Canon.
As for comparison with different brand, I dont think that edge performance is significant in reality. You wouldnt shoot subject in 5% edge of frame anyways or keep camera on tripod without even slightest attempt to follow the subject, so less than 100% coverage is fine. Also comparing it with A1 or Z8 would be more reasonable concidering their market segments and technology.
An idea for further testing - how does camera behave with multiple moving subjects? I have seen R5 and R5II compared in-field shooting birds, in that video it looked like R5II was highly successful focusing on static target, but original R5 performed better with multiple subjects and combination of moving and static subjects in the frame. R5II was too fast switching between subjects and sometimes got confused when there were some subjects in background too and started focus hunting. Original R5 held focus properly on originally focused subject.

In theory, could Canon train their algorithms with different animals to improve detection over the years and update these cameras via firmware?

I'm pretty sure thats what they do over time do improve it. But otherwise, I haven't seen a Camera doing "much" besser. There are certain hick ups here and there with every brands Animal AF.

And like I said AF detection and recognition is not influenced by the native lens you are using. And no I can’t use a Nikon lens next time since I don’t own one and will not buy one since someone means it would make a difference even if the nike was close to perfect.

even if the r5 mark 2 has the best AF, not having quality affordable glass options is a deal breaker. Canon glass is grossly overpriced, big and heavy compared to the competition. At this point to be honest, we're splitting hairs when it comes down to AF and all cameras will get you a ton of keepers.

    • @davision-en
      @davision-en  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Sure, but what if nobody else can give me the same feeling I have shooting a Canon? I never felt more home with what I do then with my Canon Cameras. I have Top-Cameras from each Brand but Canon is what I love to use. The others are just there for testing and comparison. It's the same as with woman, not everyone has the same preferences. You can say Megan Fox is way better then Taylor Swift but maybe I will disagree since I have other taste in woman and cameras then you.

Coming from the Nikon D850, looking for a mirrorless upgrade the R5 (2,5 years ago) was the only camera delivering what I needed, great overall camera, well balanced for literally 95% of all jobs with an outstanding AF still today!
