    Been working on my father in law’s Snapper riding lawn mower for a few years now, and he called me the other day to say it wasn’t starting again. Pretty sure it’s the solenoid, but now I know how to test it. Your videos were the first I thought of to figure out how to test/troubleshoot it. Thanks Taryl! You’ve been a huge help, as usual…

    i would of checked for voltage drop on all connections before condemning the stater. and i would of checked load on that battery first to see if it could hold a load... just say`n

    To me this only tests that juice is going to the trigger circuit, not the output to the starter. What if the output isn't producing all the amps? I guess it is unlikely Taryl knows what he is doing as he showed the bench test of the output of solenoids.

  • @championbeam4018

    To me it sounds like your not holding the key in "start" long enough. The solenoid makes a click noise when the key is turned. If your tractor makes any attempt to turn the engine, your solenoid is probably good

    If my solenoid is going bad, will it blow my tractors fuse? My 15 amp fuse keeps blowing after 20 minutes or so while my PTO is engaged. Also, sometimes while my PTO is engaged and I'm cutting grass, the the PTO will disengage. Then I have to shut off the PTO and then engage it again to start cutting again. This happens sometimes. Any solution would be greatly appreciated. This is on a John Deere LX178 tractor.

    Well folks again this is kind of laymans way to about things but it doesn't always tell ya the truth about the solenoid especially if has rust inside it. When say a larger starter from a like V twin draws on a solenoid the solenoid can work a moment then the starter cuts out because it heats up inside due to corrosion or moisture in the unit and stops working as the current draws juice. It's sort of like a fatigued coil you're cutting grass say like 20min and all of sudden the mower shuts off. It cools down and magically starts up again. Your coil can test good when it's cold or cooled off so these are problems that a bench test doesn't always find even if a unit is completely bad it may not test that way. I have that in my Motorized Bicycle videos a mag coil doesn't always bench test bad. This more primitive test is okay for the most part it is a way of at the least checking the stuff.

    My solenoid is good, relay fuse and key switch are good, battery is new and tested, yet no power is going to the starter motor when I turn the key. I’ve also tested all the safety circuit breakers, done everything the way you shown Taryl. Only thing I haven’t done is test the starter motor… I put the test light on the starter motor while I turn the key and it doesn’t light up, but everything before I’ve tested and it’s all good. Could it be the starter motor??? Ignition coil??

    I have a 2015 T3200 Craftsman riding mower. Ran great last fall. stored in the garage for winter, pull it out today and added fresh gas to about 1/4 that was already in it. Mower will turn over but not firing or trying to start.. I took the fairly new plugs out and cleaned them up with a little sand paper on both ends of the plug, it still will not fire. Any ideas what I could check for to help diagnose the problem. Thank you ahead of time for any advice you can give me. Ric

    I have a Scott mower made by John Deere , it won’t cut off , I have to unhook battery to get starter to stop cranking , I put a new ignition switch same results , I took solenoid off cked it for continuity it was ok , so now what do I do is there a kill wire somewhere that maybe broken or unhooked ? I’m not sure what to do ?

  • @GUILLERMOJGARZON

    @fludrbywest3886 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    No I couldn’t see the solenoid Taryl,
    But can you test the solenoid with the Volts instead of ohms? I think to see if the solenoid works properly you need to test with live circuit instead of continuity, ya know, if you have voltage you have continuity but if you don’t have the 12 volts it’s junk , ya know 😚🤔🤭

    If one can see 12volts on the red wire at the starter when the key is turned does that prove the solenoid is good, or could it still be bad, or does just a test light prove it and not a meter. Thankis
