  • In "Taryl & Jr Go Deere Hunting", another display of hilariousness mixed with education, Taryl and Taryl Jr are on a hunting trip tracking a Deere before Taryl properly shows you how to disassemble and re-assemble a Briggs & Stratton starter. He also goes over useful tips on what to look for with your starter bendix. Be sure to check out the Dactal Family Hunting Trip photo album at the end of the video as well. And there's your dinner!!
Special Thanks to Rudy and Cody Rowland for use of their land/supplies and Ben Abbott for the inspiration for the sketch.

I had a 14.5 Briggs that the magnets broke loose in the starter housing. I carefully inspected where they went, cleaned the surfaces, and epoxied them back in place. I then adjusted the valves and it worked like a charm.

I rebuilt a starter for a Briggs 2 cylinder flathead. The engine had been sitting outside for a long time.
I carefully took the starter apart, the top bushing was froze. Took apart, cleaned put back together and it worked great. Patience, and being careful is the key.
This is a great video, with very useful information. It would have been a big help if I seen this first.

  • @Vincent_Sullivan

Taryl; I was confronted a few years ago with the same problem you had (worn upper bushing) on the horizontally opposed B&S engine starter. The bushing was so worn that the armature pole pieces were rubbing on the magnets in the housing! I went to the local auto-electric place (Brian Roberts Auto Electric in Victoria BC Canada) and showed them the top housing with the worn bushing. The guy went into the back for a couple of minutes and came out with an exact replacement. Cost was $2.00. As part of the starting system overhaul I also replaced the wimpy U1 battery with an Optima "Red Top" car size battery, replaced the solenoid with a full size car solenoid, and replace all the starter circuit wiring with 4 gauge or thicker wire. When I hit "start" on this thing now you better believe it starts! The only problem now is I keep breaking the plastic starter gears... they split in half. I guess they can't handle the torque. I was wondering if brass or copper, or maybe even if a weaker steel, shim stock might be a fix? Replacement bushing maybe fabbed on a mini-lathe might be a solution. I have to take one apart and see the design is.

Another great video! Really helped. I did everything just as you described, brushes & magnets looked fine but I cleaned them anyway. Marked the case liked you said & put back together correctly BUT, when I went to test the starter liked you showed, touching the positive lead to the starter screw (starter case grounded to negative bat terminal) ...all I got was a big spark. Starter didn't spin.

From who, the scrap yard? Cub Cadets are not so great and if you got one with a Kohler engine it is likely not to last very long. They have a number of problems with them.

    • @jhitt79

John Doe well, for one, apparently the humor flew over your head. Also I personally own several cub cadets made by International Harvester that were built in the mid to late 60's, they all have Kohler engines and are still going strong. So I'd say 50yrs. is pretty good, wouldn't you?
