I have taught many subjects in my time, so I know what I'm talking about. The true test of a great instructor is that he knows his subject matter cold from top to bottom. Many just memorize a subject and then try to teach it. They are not able to explain the how and why behind the subject matter. It is obvious you live your subject matter so you know the how and why behind why things behave the way they do, which is critical for the student to truly understand and retain the subject matter. Thanks for your knowledge and the special patience you display to take the time to thoroughly explain things that I'm certain are second nature to you.

Taryl, Thank you! My husband was at work and I wanted to mow. Knew it was an electrical issue but figured I'd have to take it to the mechanic. Ended up being the 20 amp fuse which I did not know was there. I learned a lot and your video was fun too. Keep up the good work and thank you again!

All I can say is thank you. I didn't grow up learning small engines. As a matter of fact we had an electric corded lawn mower. So now as an adult even though I could afford to take it to the shop, the shop takes forever and their customer service sucks. So I need to learn this stuff and you've helped with a lot of things I hadn't considered. You guys deserve more than just add revenue. I'm going to buy some merch right now

Dear Taryl. I really owe you since I "fixed" my tractor 'cause of something you said in this (here) video. I thought I was a pretty savvy guy, but there was a lot I didn't know about the electrical system. You started by saying: "If you jump off your mower after turning it off to get a drink, and it won't even turn over when you get back, check if you've turned off the mowing deck!" I thought smugly that I always turned the deck off. However, this time I had run out of gas. For a couple of days I didn't know where to look for the problem. I saw this (here) video and I was amazed at how many safety kill switches there are. I never had thought of the one for the mower (pto). Today, I went out and looked at the PTO pull knob. Sure 'nuff it was ON! I hadn't thought of it when the engine stopped. I turned it off and the Garden tractor started up! It didn't start up easy, 'cause I have more to fix!

Don't know which direction to go now. cleaned the magnet on fly wheel, shear pin is OK turns over great but no spark. looked at harness for bad spots or broken wires and looks OK.

Fuel shutoff on my JD X320 was only getting 10V and would not open. Traced back to 12 circuit M/F connector which was bad near Key. Recurring situation. Cleaned it several times and distorted male connector in Yellow wire to give tighter contact. I think you can still say Yellow! Next time plunger gets shortened as it is not Gravity feed.

i remembered when i removed the antibackfire solenoid off the carburetor when i had a Kubota T1560 the safety switches didn't work as i learned the safety switches on Kubota and other lawn tractors are linked to the antibackfire solenoid on the carburetor as others are by grounding out the magneto coils in the engine. but can vary from one make lawn tractor or zero turn mower to another

I have fixed & replaced about everything pretty much on a vehicle(-engine,transmission, & diff insides). But i'm a noobie with riding mowers. Went to crank it for first mow this year, spent 3hrs looking at everything but 1 thing. The fkn manual blade switch lol! Soon as I watched you show in the vid, went out & sure enough...that was the problem. Thanks for saving me some bucks! I was going to buy new solenoid

Mr test light is awesome. I have ran into a bad diode a couple times on dixon mowers.Pull out the PTO and the engine dies, check the main fuse and it's blown . Caused by a bad diode in the wiring harness the the electric clutch.
Solder in a new diode and you get your dinner.

Last summer my mower just quit. No power. Kept blowing the 30amp fuse as soon as you turned key. I started from the back of the mower and started checking everything. Working my way forward. Over a few days checking for the short when I wasn't at work. Every switch. Then to wiring. Started pulling harness from back to front. Cleaning grounds and using die electric grease when reassembling. Last section of wiring was the headlights is where I found short inside loom that was zip tied too tight. Power and ground wire rubbed together 🙄. Now only if I started from front of mower. Would've only taken a minute to fix not a few days 😂

On a Husquarvna (circa 2009 model) there are two round gang connectors. One goes to the ignition switch. The other one goes to all the safety switches. If you unplug this connector it disables every safety feature on the mower. Not recommended to do but handy if your trying to troubleshoot these switches on a Husquarvna. One day I was starting my old 79 Snapper Hi-Vac and forgot I had it in gear. Those mowers only had a safety switch on the deck. This mower did not have an electric starter. I forgot I had it in 5th gear and when I started it using the recoil, it took off and I had to chase it down. It went about 50 feet before I could catch up to it!
It seems one of the most common reasons mowers won't start are these switches. One day my father said his Snapper rear engine wouldn't start. I traced it to the safety switch for the deck. The mower thought the blade was engaged. The switch was a four prong like in your video but what was weird was the connectors criss crossed. I had to look on the "interscreen" to find a diagram to see which connectors did what when the button on the switch was pressed. I'm not sure why there were four connectors going to the deck switch unless it was wired in series with the brake or seat switch and has to go through this one.

The switches would be in series in the starter solenoid ckt. . If u or taryl are not in the seat
and the engine is shut off but blades were on when shut off, you have to dis-engage the blades
and sit down b4 engine can start.
