2009 Buick Enclave Camshaft Position Sensor Location and replacement

- Here's where to find the Camshaft position sensors and replacement of Sensor B on bank 1 of my 2009 Buick Enclave. It's really a simple job might take up to 1 hour to complete. This is unedited to give a better perspective on how to do this.
I purchased my Bosch Sensor from
RockAuto.com for $23.79 literally half the price of my local dealership for the same exact part. This repair is the exact same for GMC Acadia, Chevy Traverse, and Saturn Outlook, remember these cars have 4 camshaft position sensors. Good luck hope this helps. Like and comment!

Update: This did NOT solve my issues and i ended up having to have the timing chain replaced before an eventual failure happened, with working a regular job and weather being an issue i took it into a local Buick dealership to have them do the work, as it would've taken me 2-3 weeks to tear down and replace on my free time. The cost was around $2300.

Just a note: Was getting a P0023 code (2012 Enclave) engine was chugging slightly = Bank 2 exhaust camshaft position sensor on a 2012 enclave. Royal PITA. Bank 2 exhaust is located just to the left of the Oil fill cap (near top of engine). Unfortunately, it is hidden behind a ton of stuff that needs to be removed to get to it. Heres what it took: Detach negative battery cable from battery. Remove10mm holding ac line near top front. Remove (2) 10mm holding overflow tank (move aside). Remove Fusebox cover. Loosen (2) phillips 10mm bolts (holding fuse wire harness) inside fusebox. Remove (1) 13mm bolt connecting positive battery terminals to fusebox. Unclip and remove fusebox middle part (with fuses) removing wire harness from bottom. Unclip/remove fusebox bottom. Remove (3) 10mm fusebox aluminum baseplate. Unclip wire harnesses from baseplate. Remove front plastic cowling hiding radiator cap. Remove upper radiator hose (both ends) catching drips with bucket below. Remove (2) 15mm engine mount bolts (holding rubber figure 8 mount). Remove (2) 15mm engine mount bolts to completely remove mount part holding big side of figure 8 rubber mount. Slide rubber figure 8 mount out sideways. Remove 10mm ac line bolt down below rubber mount area. Remove (2) 18 mm bolts from part of mount that bolts directly to engine. Remove (1) 10mm camshaft position sensor bolt. Remove sensor. Detach sensor wire clip. Reverse to replace everything. Note: you might want to put a new radiator hose on while you have it off. Refill coolant. Lots of parts to remove - it wasn't that bad once I figured it all out but just a lot of little maneuvering to get such a small part out. I would give yourself 1.5 hours (or more) to remove and 1.5 hours to replace. This same/similar procedure can be used to get to the alternator on this car also.

Great video. Honestly, After watching this, this will save me close to $500. In fact, Pep Boys wanted to charge me almost $500 to do this. IMO, these shops are full of crooks. I know this because my high school friend owns his own mechanic shop. Its a shame how these POS's exploit people. Especially when they exploit unknowing women.
on the wire connectors , take an L shaped scribe to the leading edge of the plug opposite the tab to disconnect with out damage works well on german plugs as well !!!! hope this helps

These two codes are coming up (P0016 & P0776) on my daughters 2012 Buick Enclave.
The vehicle cranks up and stays on, but it won't move when my daughter puts it in drive and/or reverse.

I have codes p0017 and p0016 could this be a timing chain problem. I also have a misfire on cylinder 1 3 and 5

I started to replace my "B" sensor and the rain started. I think I touched the wires on the top of it because it now works so no reason for replacing it now.

Replacing this sensor didn't solve the issue, It ended up needing the timing chain replaced. Which i ended up paying the Buick dealership to do. It cost $2000. But afterwards no more issues.

For sure glad it was useful to you, yeah unfortunately it didnt solve my issue and i had to do the timing chain which solved the issues altogether
Hey, where there any symptoms for the reason you replaced the sensor? My buick won't start now, it was losing power before it died. The codes that I found on this rig is p0016, 17, 18, 19. p0008, p0009. Just curious if all 4 sensors bad on my rig and maybe why it doesn't start.
Sounds like your timing chain is busted. Symptoms before that happening would be those codes with the check engine light on, plus on start up, you would hear a rattling sound. If your car is no longer starting, that might be the cause if the timing chain is no good.
@@brettbeez My car was rattling for a few seconds after startup. This went on for maybe 9 months before the car stopped working. It looks like a big task to replace the timing chains I have 260,000 miles on the 2009 enclave.
@RichardJohnson-up9js that's a long time for the rattling to go unchecked . Unfortunately, your engine might be locked up from a broken timing chain. I'm only guessing.

@@johnbartz1907 No it didn't fix it, the light went away for a few weeks but came back with same error code, I ordered the crank shaft position sensor hopefully replacing it will fix it. If it still gives a check engine light, I will have to take it in to a shop.
@@armandomrgl85 sorry to hear that, I've read on Buick forums if it isn't the sensor it's the timing chain getting stretched and it's like a 4000$ fix...

Im working on a friends car...he had 22 codes. A few of them pointed to the camshaft sensor. And cylinders 2-4-6 were misfiring. So My guess is it would be the Bank A cam sensor . However he has a 2010, and I can't seem to find the sensors. Is there a difference between 09 and 10? I've looked all over the internet

Hey man were you getting the P0017 code? Mine also says it’s the Bank 1 Position B sensor. Did this solve the problem? My engine runs perfect, no rattle or loss of power. I’m praying it’s just the sensor.

@@atvbass10 no it just had check engine light on and i could hear the timing chain on start ups rattled a little bit.

Hey Brett.. I just got code p0700 and the transmission didn't want to shift gears and after I cleared the code it started shifting again but I can tell that it's not shifting as smooth as before. Any advice on this? Thanks!!
Late reply, but it could be a shift solenoid or wiring... If not then the TCM itself. But since it started shifting again id suspect a shift solenoid
Are all 4 camshaft sensors the same part number or their diferent?

my code is p0011 i know its bank 1 but how did you narrow it down to sensor B ?
I have a OBD2 scan tool that shows me the information that's how I was able to narrow it. You can get one for about $60 on Amazon.
Could you show the location off all 5 sensors? I have to replace 1, 3, and 5 on a 2011 Buick Enclave as soon as possible and it’s impossible to find anything about it
I'm not aware that there were 5 cam sensors only 4 camshaft sensors. 2 of them are behind all those pulleys on the passenger side of the car towards the front of the car. The other 2 are easily accessed like I showed in this video.
Are they all the same part number for all 4 sensors?
Hey Brett. On my 08 enclave my driver side headlight flickers at start up and then cuts off, only the driver side. Have you experienced that?
Sounds like your bulb is burning out. You're gonna have to replace it

I have code P0018 and P0017 and my car sound kinda making a ugly sound will the sound go away if the codes are changed?
If it's making a bad sound the damage might already be done you might might to take it in to the dealer and get a diagnosis. You will most likely need a new timing chain

Yes this was for bank 1 sensor B. My code was P0017

I had the same problem (P0008 code). I replaced both sensors on 11/08/2020. This did fix my problem. Started the vehicle and the code was gone. Put about 200 miles on it and still no problem. I had a lot of trouble getting the sensors out and had trouble getting one of the sensors back in. This was done on a 2009 GMC Acadia with 62,653 miles on it.
