    Why isn't this taught in schools? Native speakers need this course just as much as non-natives. It sure is helping me with my software tutorial videos. Thanks profesora!

      What you just posted has absolutely 0 sense of cohesion or comedy. It's such a horrid attempt at communication I am surprised you are even able to exist in society. If it was a joke, it may have been the worse joke i ever heard in my life, since it lacks any qualities your normal joke would have. If it was supposed to be a normal sentence, then it fails as that too, as what you just said makes absolutely no sense. It's so dumb, a cave man would be able to speak more cleverly and more nuanced than you. I am so ashamed of having to see this, it's just sad. Your lack of brain cells doesn't help you either, but if you wanna try and talk with me you gotta speak normally you idiotic piece of shit. I honestly think they should put you in the mental hospital, but not for improving your brain, but rather keep you out of society so no one has to deal with your crap. Your stupidity will be remembered forever as a prime example of why humanity is on a downwards spiral.

      I havnt paid my taxes from the years 2003 to 2007. In 2009 a Treasury Agent came to my house and I murdered them. I clean my finger prints off their body with 98% acetone and buried them behind my house. I proceeded to set my house on fire with all my credit cards and legal documents inside, and flee the country to live in the Philippines. With all the money I saved from my tax evasion, I was able to live comfortably until the US Government got an anonymous tip of my acts and my current location. I am currently being held and tortured in Guantanamo bay as they think I have an accomplice.

    memully- I absolutely agree!!! I always say half my job is to help non-native speakers speak with clarity and confidence. The other half is to teach native speakers how to communicate properly with global audiences!!! Unfortunately native speakers aren't so willing to listen...

    Thks for the video. But i reallize a struggle here. First, we need to speak clearly. So, learners ènd up speaking english slow, word by word, like they are reading books. Meanwhile, we need to cooperate intonation and music to the speech at the same time. Together with getting the grammar right, pick up the right vocabulary. So, for me, from clearly... to.... confidently... is a long road to go. How do u think?

  • @untekhi

    Great video Heather! I looked everywhere for help. I recorded myself making an instructional video and was horrified when I could not understand what I was saying. I have a master's degree in city planning which requires many presentations and I have felt roadblocks that were confusing to me but now suddenly understand and need help. Thinking clearly and articulating is only fair if you seriously want to communicate with others.

    Hi Heather, I teach English as a foreign language. My students often tell me that they can understand me and they can understand other non-native speakers but when they have a meeting with Bill from the US or John from the UK then they are struggling. I sincerely believe that native English speakers need to be taught how to speak English to non-natives. I have also developed 10 tips. Would you like to share them with you? Maybe I should make a youtube video.

    The funny thing is how we can actually 'stretch the fixed cold dictionary rules' to suit our purposes and fit the additional rules which are discussed later. When you go to 3.30 of the video you can hear how a normaly longer vowel in the adjective 'short' is ... shorter than a normally short vowel in the adjective 'long'. Compare: short /ʃɔːt/ vs long /lɒŋ/ in IPA transcription.

    • @heatherhansen
      @heatherhansen  10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Eventually you want your fluency to reach a level where you don't need to think about grammar, but yes, grammar is important. If you haven't internalized the rules yet, you will need to think about it while you speak.

    • @heatherhansen
      @heatherhansen  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're welcome to say "off-ten. Both pronunciations are acceptable and common in different parts of the world. That's why understanding the differences in global varieties of English is important, and why it's even more important to listen to what someone says instead of being irritated by how they say it. There is no "right" way to say certain things. There is only location and context. I'm sure there are plenty of people in the world who will also be bugged by how you pronounce certain words.

    We do not merely reduce the duration of the vowel sound before a voiceless consonant but cut it off sharply. So such vowel sound becomes abrupt, i.e. the degree of tenseness of vocal cords remains constant for a short time and then drops sharply. In case of the vowel before a voiced consonant the degree of tenseness of vocal cords gradually decreases during the retention stage of the vowel pronunciation.

    • @heatherhansen

      Trax Morth I don't have any research on this, but just through experience, non-native speakers in Asia often told me the Australian and New Zealander accents were the most difficult for them to understand. My husband (a Dane) thinks Kiwis are the hardest. This isn't just due to accent, but also the amount of slang that is used.
