    In my personal case i want to sound more like a native because i work with people from canada or USA and sometimes they're very though saying or requesting to talk to someone who speaks real English, i never thought this was gonna be so hard to deal with, i feel like quitting! But your videos are awesome and they cheer me up!!!

    Heather, you nailed it! In my brain, my pronunciation sounds so different from what's being recorded! Feels so disappointed when I playback my own recordings each time. But this also tells me that I have tonnes to improve on. Thanks!

    Personally, when I started learning the phonetics rules,symbols sounds, everything changes in a faster way, I mean, from my perception that is the best way to improve my pronunciation and fluency as well.

    Heather! I need your help, I never realized until my friend starting pointing out everything I pronounce wrong; when I say "have to" it comes out "half to" or "having too" as "haffing too". I catch it more now, but I am becoming more and more self-cautious when I speak. Love your videos!!!

    You're all kinds of awesome!!! I have trouble with "w" and "r" words when they are together.

    • @heatherhansen
      @heatherhansen  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      can you give me an example? Do you mean W and R in the same word (like 'word' or 'were') or 2 words next to each other? What's your native language?

    • @allflagsmatter5569
      @allflagsmatter5569 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      My native language is English, ironically. An example is "right-wing". It is a coin-toss whether I will pronounce it correctly or "white-ring".

    It's important we copy the other people accent. What you say?
    I'm confuse

      @alienwarecorei726 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes ! absolutely yes! but make yourself sure that is a good pronunciation

    • @A09550
      @A09550 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The accent does not help if you mispronounce the words. So, what she said is we should not try to shadow the accent as it is unnecessary.

    Hi, i am one of your subscriber and i have been following your teaching to help my English. I just want to give my opinion, please correct me if I am mistaken. I understand that pronunciation in English-speaking is an important matter, nevertheless, an accent I think is also playing an important role when we speak the language.. For me, accent is the music of the language, therefore the English native speakers could easily understand or at least got the idea of what we were trying to say in English if we are using the accent even though our pronunciation is not that great, simply because they recognise the 'song' of their own language. For example... please try to sing twinkle twinkle little star song by using corrected notes, but with a slight mispronunciation, I'm sure, we would be able to recognize what you were trying to say because you sing the song that I know.. But try again to sing twinkle twinkle little star song with uncorrected notes, however, this time all the pronunciations are spot on correctly, I'm sure eventually you would be able to recognize the song, but it takes time for you to process it... this example applies to English native speakers who trying to communicate with a Chinese man, for example, who has a great English pronunciation, but using his own Chinese accents while speaking in english... in my experience of learning English, i found an huge improvement of communication when i use an Australian accent when i speak English (I live in Australia, by the way..😊) rather than using my Indonesian accent.. My English is still not perfect, but at least I can communicate more easily now with the Australian English native speakers.. 😊

      I think you are confusing an accent with intonation (melody). If you can imitate the intonation (melody, ups and downs in the voice) of native speakers, it will definitely help native speakers understand you because they get a lot of their understanding from word stress and intonation and not specific sounds.
      If you are speaking with non-native speakers, the individual sounds are more important. If you are using sounds from your native language to speak English words (or are using your native language's word stress and intonation patterns) you develop an accent on your English. Accents are not a bad thing until they are so strong no one can understand. That's why you need to have unique consonant sounds (R can't sound the same as L, for example).
      Check out some of my other videos on Global English to learn about the main things that need to be in order in your speech to be understood internationally. I explain the importance of consonant sounds, vowel length and phrasal chunking to help your listeners understand you better.
