We Can't Control Other People, But We Can Set Boundaries (I sigh 'cuz I know how hard it is!)

  • Do you blame other people for your bad behavior? Do you make excuses for other's bad behavior? Are you allowing bad behavior?
That's what today's reading is about.
In our journey, we must determine what is loving for and to us. We must examine how we control people to make them do what we want - and it usually fails.
What happens when we stop trying to control people by our words and actions?
We have to look at OUR behavior that determines THEIR behavior is not good for us.
In this video, I use the example of someone I know who is perpetually late when we agree upon a time and place to meet. Instead of being angry with them for a pattern that they keep repeating, I can stop and ask what I need and set a boundary. For example, I can say, "If you don't show up on our agreed time, I will go ahead and do my thing." And then do it.
You are expressing your expectations and the consequences of your expectations. And the hard part is to BE FIRM in your commitment to yourself.
When you change, other people change.
