    So many innuendos, lmao. The new pack looks good. I've got a dirty thirty on order, so I'm pretty excited about that.

    I like he zipper packs too, but never thought of putting them in my bag flat. I like to have my pack somewhat organized, but I also like to just stuff in to the pack so I can get on the trail faster.

      @BackpackingwithBuckley  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It takes no time to stack carefully pal. It rides nicer on your back if you do. However, on the last day of a trio, I shove it all in as fast as I can with no regard for organization. 😀

    Hey, there, Tim! Hope you're doing well. I've been away from TH-cam for a while. I'm breaking in a new knee. I decided to try to fix the instability issue that happened after my fall during my AT thruhike attempt.
    I haven't had a smooth ride: a blood clot in my calf set me back a couple of weeks, and diabetics heal more slowly than people without that issue. A blood thinner and a break from physical therapy (but not from stretching) seems to have put me back on the road to recovery. I'm a little over a month in, and can walk around the block with a cane.
    I'm still intent on hiking the whole AT in one trip. Doing half of the 2,200 mile trip turned me into a "thruhiker," though I won't actually be one until I do the whole thing in less than a year. At 70, I won't have much time to spare before the dream slips away.
    Btw: your pack is extremely well organized, but I got away with using a roll top pack liner with a trash bag containing all of my compressible sleep gear on the bottom of the pack. I would then squeeze as much air out as possible, twisting the neck of the bag and tucking it behind the bag itself and the pack liner. Next, I would put my stuff sack containing nearly everything that wasn't food, clothing, or shelter on top of the trash bag, horizontally, followed by my daily warm-up clothing for breaks in cold weather in another horizontal stuff sack, and my food and cookware ln a bear hang bag on top of that.
    I would then roll down the liner and secure it, and top it off with my rain gear before rolling down the outer pack and securing the top strap. My front mesh pocket held my stake bag with tree straps, my Hammock Gear Winter Palace Tarp with doors (rolled up into their snake skins), DCF groundsheet, mesh bag containing my water filtration system (same as yours). Snacks went into my right hip belt pouch, and daily TP and sanitizer (inside a zip-lock bag) into the left. Phone rode in a shoulder pouch with sun glasses, other shoulder strap held a homemade hydration system (one pound peanut jar-about 26 fl. oz. with short plastic hose and bite valve).
    I always carried my Mora Companion knife in its sheath clipped to my sternum strap. My side pockets held a stainless steel 40 oz. water bottle /sleeping bag heater, folding camp saw (in cold weather), and a modified Toaks large titanium wood stove went into the other pocket. Sunscreen and a 16 oz. bottle of stove alcohol got stuffed in there, along with my potty trowel.
    The pack was a ULA CDT lined with a 1/2" closed-cell torso length sleeping pad for the 4 or 5 times that I actually slept on shelters.
    My full pack, with a liter of water and 5 days' worth of food never exceed 25 pounds (and was less when resupply didn't require that much food). I took along a travel guitar wrapped in foam inside a kayak bow storage bag with a roll-top closure for about 300 miles, adding 4 lbs. (after sending my winter clothing home).
    The trip was worth the knee replacement (which had been coming for a long time - 50 years since getting hit by a car at age 19, messing up my left knee). Oh, another reason for the slow (my opinion) healing - I turned 70 last summer.
    Keep on backpacking, Mr. Buckley! 👍💪✌️

      Haha...that's about the truth. I figure it will last a LONG time and each purchase I make I try to justify it in terms of how much a hotel would cost a night versus all the free nights I spend in the backcountry.

      @@BackpackingwithBuckley im thinking about stuff sacks for my sleeping bag etc rather than nylofume. It seems like my pack turns into a giant soda can (reminiscent of the Red Bull girls back in the day) on my back due to stuffing it too tight. Do they make that big of a difference in keeping the pack rectangular in shape.

    • @BackpackingwithBuckley
      @BackpackingwithBuckley  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I go by total weight and with 2 liters of water and 3 pounds of food, this loadout is about 20 pounds. Without water and food I'd guess about 14.
