Hey man what a cool video. I have a hammock as well with bug net. Have camped quite a few times in it. Never while it has rained though. But I just recently purchased a tarp. It has been a learning curve adjusting to how to set it up but I'm figuring it out.
It is a lot to figure out at first but once you dial it in, you'll be golden!
OK, mr. "hot bod" 🌶 One thing about the UQP - it doesn't necessarily warm you up; it keeps the warmth that your hot bod generates from being drawn away by convective currents (i.e., wind). I think the primary reason to use an UQP - at least for me - is when there is potential for "splash back" from rain. I don't want my UQ down getting wet, and splash back is one way that might happen.

Great Video...Im a believer in the uq protector...I think my temp range is 5 to 10 degrees lower with the protector and i have not had any condensation problems...One thing i do like to do is hang my pack on the head end strap which keeps it out of the weather and away from critters...
I usually hang my pack the same way. The protector that's breathable has worked far better for me!

I do like the idea of a zip-on option. I’m excited to know that there is now an option for the chameleon. I may look into a summer UQ in that case.
I like the Dutch design too but extra zippers means extra weight too. I've found that my 45 degree hammock actually covers temps from 25 to 75. With my dyneema tarp and simmer quilt my entire system is under 4 pounds!
Hammock camping is awesome! Nice breakdown video, with some serious dancing lol. Being the underquilt protector is breathable, I wonder how well it would actually protect the underquilt from the elements? I am curious.
I'm curious too. I'm assuming it works similar to goretex maybe? I'll have to test it more in weather to find out!

I am about to buy a SG hammock (first camping hammock for me), and was not even aware that the quilt protectors existed. Now I am wondering if I would need one ! Could you please tell what is the difference between having one or none, in different conditions according to what you have experienced, so that I could know whether I might buy one or not ?
They really are just for protection from sideways rain or splashback. They are not at all necessary in most conditions!

Thanks, Tim. I didn't get out much this winter because of the warm temperatures and lack of snow. It's good to see someone else getting out once in a while! Shug Emery has some snow up in Minnesota, so I have been watching his channnel as well as yours. What folding saw were you using? It looks like a Fiskars. I bought one because it's lighter than my Corona, but the Corona cuts better so I took a couple of inches off the blade and handle. It's coming on the AT with me. I got to use my -20F Superior Gear hammock only twice, but it only got down to -10. My Hummingbird hammock is coming on the AT again, too, because it's so light and I don't anticipate temperatures much below freezing. My Hammock Gear DCF Winter Palace tarp is coming again. It's going strong after 545 trail miles, so it should make it all the way (I hope that I do 😁).
Btw: My mom called me "Daniel B." when I was bad. My middle name is Bruce. It's weird hearing you saying it to another subscriber. 😂

Cool set up information, away like to get tips on how to better set up my Hammock. You answered many questions I was going to ask you about in this video thank you. I will consider purchasing the breathable under quilt protection I think it is a good choice.
When I do my hike on the SHT this summer Im considering keeping my pack in my chair under the tarp at night. Otherwise do you usually just hang the pack on a tree? Always enjoy your video content it makes my day to get the notification of a video upload from you.
I keep my pack under my tarp too. I just hang it up when I'm on a break or when I unpack it. The helinox was the best as a "shelf" for it but now I just leave it on the ground or bring a ground sheet.
I like to use a hammock chair as a gear sling under my hammock. Keeps my stuff high and dry and within easy reach.

If I generally camp 30-60 degrees at night, would you recommend I purchase the standard 45° or get the 30° hammock; also, which temp top quilt would you suggest?
I get it is a loaded question based on people's variances.
It seems from watching that the 45 is absolutely a conservative rating...just don't want to freeze when it drops, nor roast when it is milder.

It's worth a bit of extra weight to get the 30 degree. That will ensure you're toast warm. For a top quilt, I have a 15 degree. Superior Gear also has a zip on quilt called the Cocoon that can be paired with a lighter quilt to go to cold temps. It's more versatile for a wider range of temps that way! Let me know if you need any other advice! Glad to nerd out on hammocks a anytime!

Suppose you had no hammock gear and you wanted to buy a complete system from Superior Gear. What gear and temp ratings would you chose to allow the broadest range of 4 season use? I'm thinking a 45deg hammock, a 30deg quilt, a 0deg quilt and 50deg cocoon. Wouldn't that cover temps ranging from 50F down to maybe -30F?
I have a Hammock Gear rainfly that I usually use in warmer weather. The setup you mentioned would cover you for damn near anything! Perfect combo idea!
What are the benefits of an underquilt protector vs a lower temp rated underquilt?
It's main use is for rain splashback. I don't believe it wouldn't add much R Value other than wind blockage. In this video I was mainly testing it to see if it performed without condensation on the inside of it.
What makes the Underquilt protector breathable? More porous material? Or big holes to let out moisture? I…. Have… got…. to …. Know!!
It's just porous I believe. There are no visible holes and it's supposed to still work for water splashback in rain! I need to find out more now too! 😀

Highly water resistant, it would certainly protect your hammock from splashback.
You do sell hammock gear pretty good for that company you work for, supreme hammocks. Almost have me sold on them until you were laying down in it.

Elite. It saves a few ounces but I paid for it for sure! It's certainly not necessary but I'm old and need to save as much weight as possible! Lol

@joker2100 I love my tarp from Hammock Gear. It is indeed Dyneema and it's awesome. Doesn't retain water or sag.

on the fence about getting a hammock, I feel Iis too much of learning curve and of course $$$ to get into a kit.
I had the same concerns when I got into hammock hanging. I'm now 14 hammocks in and $$$$$$$ but honestly, the learning curve was totally a fun part for me. Splicing amsteel, sewing, and fiddling with different configurations is part of the hobby for me personally.
