Trivia: A cat that was supposedly used for the role of "Luna" was drugged a lot during the making of this (to make the illusion that it was "talking"). In turn, it was peeing all over the set
As someone who has studied animation and marketing for years and has known about Saban Moon’s existence since Rebeltaxi talked about it. Even if it did get greenlit, this Americanisation wouldn’t have taken off and an aspect of that actually comes with the character design and overall art direction. For one thing, this semi-realistic Filmation-like look was already phasing out by the time it was being pitched as animated shorts, shows and movies were already transitioning their artstyle back to something akin to the golden age (Roger Rabbit, Mighty Mouse, The Little Mermaid and the original Nicktoon trio specifically come to mind). No longer were cartoons about “toys first, then cartoon”, it was beginning to be more about being creator driven. Saban Moon probably wouldn’t have lasted long because it was using production practises that were beginning to be looked down upon as executives from other companies looked to the creators rather than the toys. Another aspect of the art direction that would’ve damaged the show’s chance of popularity is just how unappealing the character designs are. I call it “diet Filmation”. Yes, the style is comparable to He-Man and She-Ra, but the differences comes in that even with the limited movements the animators still added subtle facial expressions and expressive creatures and environments that would fit with the medieval fantasy aesthetic those shows were going for. Sailor Moon is also a fantasy, but it was different to that of He-Man. Sailor Moon was more science fiction with the fantasy aspects being more fairy tale like as opposed to being gritty like He-Man. Not to mention that the facial expressions on the Saban designs are non-existent and lack the personality of the original show and manga. A lot of Sailor Moon’s worldwide popularity comes in its unique mix between fairy tale fantasy and science fiction as well as designs that are both appealing to look at and emphasises on human expressions. Saban Moon lacks that in favour of a dated, robotic direction which wouldn’t have captured the hearts and imagination to it’s target audience the same way that the original show and manga have done. Thank goodness that English speaking audiences got the original product as opposed to this “diet Filmation” show.
Nope. The moon is tidally locked. It rotates at the same speed it orbits, so the same side always faces Earth. The moon's seemingly quick orbit is the result of the Earths' own rotation. This means the moon has one solar eclipse a month, not once a day as it's only got the Earth between it at one point of its orbit around the earth. Actualy, it's less than once a month, because the moon dosnt' orbit on a flat plane, it's angled a bit. So the right time of the month has to line up with the slightly varrying speed of its orbit so the Earth is at the zero degree point of its orbit and... Look, it really only gets 2-4 of those a year, okay?
@@karolnowak6423 yeah which is why i'm confused that the characters are making such a big deal about it, because it happens once a month and is incredibly predictable. That's like the sun rising and us going "OH MY GOSH! IT'S A SUNRISE!"

do not underestimate raw cookie dough. According to the CDC, each year up to 3,000 people die from raw cookie dough and even more get hospitalized from it. That stuff is pure evil, and it makes you fat too. :o
Don’t blame Sagan for this! Saban made some of the most faithful broadcast anime dubbing of its time! ... which really isn’t saying all that much, but name one kids’ anime dub from the late nineties/early 2000s to keep most characters’ names, and the thing set in Japan! They barely censored anything, even used death in places where “destroyed" would arguably work pretty well, seeing as, as Digimon, their bodies are literally destroyed. They didn’t even cut out the guns! They made sure to say that they were loaded, despite it not making any sense for them to be not loaded, but the guns got to (sorta) stay!
I felt so old when you had to explain cel animation and showed that footage of cels being sold. I remember looking at geocities pages on a dial-up connection just so I could copy the way cel shading looked.
you should know there's been an update to this! a youtuber called rey mona made a two part documentary and managed to get her hands on high quality (as high as you can for 90s stuff anyway) copies of the music video *and* the 11 minute pilot episode!
You are technically correct (the best kind). DiC had nothing to do with Sailor Moon after R. They produced 65 episodes -- the syndication mandate -- then stopped. Canada's YTV had to finish dubbing R by themselves because DiC wouldn't. Cloverway (w/Geneon) produced S and SuperS. It just happened to be at the same studio DiC used, with similar writers.
Wait, hold on. A solar eclipse... on the moon? Also, it's interesting that Mamoru's name getting changed to Darien apparently pre-dates the DiC dub. It makes me wonder who originally came up with it and how it remained his canonical English name even after being handed off to a Canadian company.
The English names are all pretty clever. Serena came from Serenity, and from Selene, the goddess of the moon. Darien came from Endymion, the Japanese name of his past life. It also means "protector", apparently. The English names aren't terrible, it's stupid, how people hate them so much.
@@aromaladyellie I have to disagree. What about the other names like Lita, Trista, Amara, Michelle, Molly...? They don't have fitting meanings like this, do they? And what about the stupid changes like Dark Kingdom --> Negaverse; Black Lady --> Wicked Lady; Kunzite --> Malachite (why another mineral?!) ? They could have just stayed the same! Or the attack names. Why did they have to change things like "Moon Tiara Action" into "Moon Tiara Magic"?
@@sailorcat Negaverse much better than generic Dark Kingdom. I can't understand the hate but the voices and dialog for the dub is more memorable than the Japanese one.
I was a little kid when I watched Sailor Moon, and I didn't know anything about LGBTQ and I kept forgetting the girls' names, but I knew Neptune and Uranus were dating.
Seriously. It's so ridiculous how people think that kids don't question anything or are able to figure these things out. That's the exact opposite what they do.
Same! I mean I was an avid fan but cringed at the non dubbed episode where minako and usagi are hounding her over being lovers with Neptune or not, presuming she’s a beautiful boy. why’d they have to be so dense? was it a product of its time? American cartoons for adults were immaturely obsessed with ignorant humor about being LGBTQIAU around that time, the late 90s. but at least the one in Japanese didn’t ERASE their lesbian relationship.
I remember feeling so gross that they made them cousins because it was so obvious they were dating and as a kid I literally thought they were lesbian dating cousins. I was like... why are cousins dating even remotely ok? It wasn't until I was older that I realized what they attempted.
I'm old enough to remember when Sailor Moon aired on Toonami. People tend to rag on the old dub, but if it never aired on TV a lot of us probably wouldn't be here talking about anime.
I know there was cons for stuff like Star Trek, Star Wars and Superhero stuff back then but i did not think there was cons for things like anime and cartoons yet.

The only other magical girl I know of that uses/used a wheelchair is Mimori Tougou from Yuuki Yuuna, and she was “cured” of being disabled by the end of the show :/ (as a disability rights advocate and special ed teacher, I was really disappointed by how Yuuki Yuuna treated disability in general)
“Go bleach your roots, creep!” Is my new favourite insult. 😂😂😂😂 Omg this was perfect. The voice acting and art was so amazing. The Jinkx Monsoon killed me.
Khadijah Johnson I feel like DiC and Nelvana’s dubbing If anime’s don’t get much love, since most of the localization from there Canadianization... Also from DiC’s Sailor Moon, Stephanie Morgenstern as Sailor Venus and the late Dennis Akiyama as Kunzite truly nailed their character.
I loved the OG dub Sailor Moon. I hate how people always shit on the dubs, especially older ones. All the main scouts voices suited them perfectly. Trouble only came for Molly and characters not around long. The Voice actors gave them character. and you need character and personality. Or else you end up with the raw suckage that is Crystal.
The fact that Saban Moon didn't come to fruition is kind of a bummer for the person who came up with the concept, given how successful the live-action PGSM ended up being in Japan. Also kind of cool to see diverse scouts (even in the ridiculous 90's way)
Given it was developed in the 90s "the time of the Tokens 1" they actually had given her a personality and character. Nowadays in the era "the time of the Tokens2" it would be simply about "Look at me I am DiSaBlEd!".
@Chris Manaloe what is the alternative? what is the difference between a genuine character and a token character and when will we get to a point in time where you can have a black/gay/disabled character without people automatically jumping to the conclusion that they're a "token character", i don't get it. U either have diversity or you dont, I don't see the issue with "tokenism" when the alternative would have been all white, able bodies characters
@@eggzs6727 I'd say there are levels though, yeah? Like, if the token person's only noteworthy trait is being a token we can agree that's pretty shit. No diversity
@@Pandaman64 yeah that's very true! I don't really think I've seen a lot of token characters for the sake of token characters- most of the time they are well developed or as developed as the rest of the characters in the franchise, people just like to kick up a fuss about it because it's not what they're used to. I think we're in a very transitional period now when it comes to cinema and in a few years time it won't be as much as an issue. We also definitely need more franchises and original content that feature a diverse range of ppl as leads My brain automatically jumped to group movies like the new powerangers and charlie's angles and ghostbusters that feature p diverse casts but I guess in romcoms and such, 'token' support characters are pretty prevelant

"Go bleach your roots creep" is an iconic line.
It’s fitting that the smartest character on sailor moon would come up with such a great line as “ go bleach your roots, creep!”

"It's a solar eclipse!"
they're on the moon that happens like once a day

Don’t blame Sagan for this! Saban made some of the most faithful broadcast anime dubbing of its time! ... which really isn’t saying all that much, but name one kids’ anime dub from the late nineties/early 2000s to keep most characters’ names, and the thing set in Japan! They barely censored anything, even used death in places where “destroyed" would arguably work pretty well, seeing as, as Digimon, their bodies are literally destroyed. To be fair, the "cousins" thing wasn't DiC. It was Cloverway.

A quick google search said that both Darien and Mamoru mean, roughly, "protector". I also always liked that Mamo's american last name was Shields.
@@Huckleberry87 Aww, that is sweet. I did like the cleverness of some of the renaming. Usagi to Serena is actually pretty brilliant.

@@Pandaman64 yeah that's very true! I think we're in a very transitional period now when it comes to cinema and in a few years time it won't be as much as an issue. We also definitely need more franchises and original content that feature a diverse range of ppl as leads
My brain automatically jumped to group movies like the new powerangers and charlie's angles and ghostbusters that feature p diverse casts but I guess in romcoms and such, 'token' support characters are pretty prevelant
