- Sennheiser's original Momentum headphones were well-reviewed by pretty much everyone... except me. The cold hard truth is that I made a mistake. I reached out to Sennheiser about giving me another crack with their new Momentum On Ear and this is the result!

I have always wanted a pair of the momentum on ears, but never actually got the courage to spend my money on it. Until I found out that one of my friends bought the Beats solos for 135GBP (same price with the momentum on ears), so I bought them just to show my friend how wrong he was. It was so worth it.
I feel sorry for your friend! hahahahaha that's some epic troll right there. beats solos sound like a headphone you would get at your local news agency or something lol.
Honestly I think the momentum sounds so much better than the studio or the pro let alone the solos and mixrs
Beats are just popular and loud but not good so you made a good choice
***** Momentum has better sound quality.
Spektrik I wish they had better bass is there any way to boost it
Still using them, they give you enough of the high end sound to be satisfying in compact form, plus everything is replaceable, had one new cable and ear pads.
A fine line to walk. keeping partners and not pissing them off and still trying to be truthful about product recommendation. I give you a thumbs up.
got these 2 months ago and couldn't be happier, great build and sound quality :)
I tested one earlier today, and they sound way better than Beats by Dr. Dre. My Solo HD Red's only lasted for 5 years, which was short, compared to the one that my brother-in-law's friend's Sennheisers, which lasted for nearly 10 years. So, that's about it. But, I do want to know the quality of it in lows, mids, and highs. Because, I'm not really that of an audiophile like others are.
I bought these before I even knew you had reviewed them, a friend noticed them and said "I told you I watch Linus, he has a review on those!" And pretty much have everything to say about these as you did, they are soooo tight on your head at first but they loosen up after a month or so and soon fit really great. The sound is fantastic as you have said, they are very very clear all over.
I personally own the Beats Pro for about 3 years. Beats are extremely over priced and in return you get the build quality, name and aesthetics. I purchased a Momentum Over-ear in the summer because I got a discount for only $279.99( that's ridiculous) with an really supple leather. The Momentum are possibly the best portable Headphones i have ever tried. I had to return it because I needed money for a new PC :(.
That's what I thought, but yes on Android it makes an enormous difference.
I appreciate that you chose to "re-calibrate" your opinions as most people would never consider doing that. Thorough coverage.
great review man. I'm glad to hear these sound as good if not better than the over the ear. i absolutely LOVE the sound of the over ear, but the cups are way to small for my ears so unfortunately they're going back. I'm currently trying out the urbanite XL and although I'm not a huge bass head, i enjoyed the punch the momentum gave over the urbanite so i have a pair of the on ears arriving tomorrow. its such a pain trying to find the right headphone online haha
I have the Momentum over-the-ear and the most important thing to get the best sound quality is to have a perfect seal. So if you have big ears, or you wear glasses or earrings then forget about that. Also it takes a while before the foam on the ear cups molds to your ears (at least 3 weeks). If you want a sneak peek of how they will sound, press the cups on your ears to get a perfect seal and you'll be blown away by the audio quality.
I just noticed that u have also Cats in the Intro! So... we kinda miss Rumble and Rocket interfering with your videos... I always loved to see this happening and seeing how you handled this spontaneously! Please, let us see some of these scenes again... and hopefully Rocket won't get lost ever again!
Yeah. I just can't do anything right lately. Super tired from the video shoot and meet-up today :p
I'm not a fashion ear phone person. At all. Personally, if I had to choose just one, my first instinct would be the circumaural form factor. I have found that my comfort and listening experiences were the best with this style. My second pair would be in ear. I love that they are more portable and with properly fitting tips they can be very comfortable.
I liked them last time too. This video is mostly a re-make of the original one that removes somreferencea to another momentum model that isn't actually the same thing
I love you Linus, you're reviews are always spot on and you really help me and others decide on different types of hardware and accessories!!
There was a box in the video.
linus keep doing what your doing man, your a HUGE part of the community and amazing at what you do! Keep it UP! :)
It's worth it. I actually returned my Vengeance 1300s after a week of use because I was having problems with the mic. I decided to upgrade to a good pair of headphones and ended up with the Beyerdynamic DT440. There is a huge difference in sound quality. Being open headphones the sound stage is huge and this is something I find amazing for gaming. I listen to a lot of electronic and metal music and I find these headphones great for this.
Linus! Please do more "fashion" accessories that don't suck! The only problem that I have with expensive headphones is that they look very plain usually, so to see headphones that look better and sound the same is very cool. Thank you
I have them! All I can say is they are amazing, the construction is solid and the sound is super clear and detailed, the bass is smooth, textured and powerful, the presentation of the instruments is impressive with a large stage. In conclusion, the sound is spectacular! Recommended 100%. The funny thing is that the sound changes with the passing of time, whenever you hear better. That's incredible.
And by the way the pressure that causes the ears is disappearing with the constant use...
The Momentums 2.0 On Ears are the same just with folding capability and wireless(?) The Over-Ear 2.0 features bigger cup to house bigger ears, as well as new material I think for the cushions.
When it come to headphones for me, comfort is key. I'm an average user, so I don't need super high quality drivers, or perfectly balanced highs and lows. I prefer circumaular(over the ear) headphones, because I find the the most comfortable. Right now I am using ~$25 headphones from Monoprice, and they are very comfortable. I'm looking to get new headphones, because they are getting kinda of static-y from the general daily use.
I have a few sets I use. For most of my computing work, it's a Creative Fatality headset (The original one, not the second edition). For music and movie listening, it has to be my Sennheiser HD580's. My wife has a very different need, as she loves to have her music cranked, and so she uses a very nice set of Sennheiser HD280's. With 90dB of "Noise cancellation" (Padding), she can crank her tunes so the headphones are leaping off her head, and it doesn't disturb me (quite so much).
I have a Shure SRH440, and I love it. It's not that portable, but sounds incredibly good. I've tested and owned headphones that costs much more, but this is my favorite.
IEM sound like a nice idea. the over the ear type does in fact hang too low and there is not a full seal around my ear, which also leaves all the pressure to the top of my ear and above. I also like the fabric of those.
@Linus you should stick to iphone or ipod when doing audio tests, i can guarantee you HTC, Samsung, LG phones doesn't provide you with that clear linear sound. I've had each one myself, currently having a Sony Xperia Z1 and i still have my Ipad 4.gen with me all the time. Great review tho!
I do music for a living by the way and headphones are one critical point to your hearing next to your studio monitors, to perfect and create that sound. Looking for my next purch..
I love IEMs because they seal well and use less battery power to get higher volume. That said, I'm currently using some Siberia IIs(SteelSeries) that I got used for 20 of store credit. They're open, which I don't really prefer, but they sound good enough and the head band design combined with the large pads make them something I can wear for a very long time. My only major complaint is the audible squeaking of the headband spring when walking with them.
I'm sure there are more expensive professional headphones than the Shure SRH 840s but they are the best headphones I have ever used for mixing that are within an attainable price range. Source - 5 years studying music technology and production.
I use three different headphone solutions. Wireless for when i work around the house, razer headset for gaming, and inner ears to listen to great music
ahh great news about the improving comfort!! thanks for the upload!
I use Sennheier HD 650 at home and planning to buy this when i travel. And the quality is superb in my opinion. At home I use Asus Xonar essence stx sound card. This combination is perfect for all, music, movies etc.
I don't go out of my way to make videos about stuff that sucks. Why bother? It wastes my time and wastes yours. You may have noticed that there are MANY PC brands for which I've never done a single video. It's not because they haven't asked...
I've recently shifted from using ATH-M50's to DT-880 Pros... so comfortable... but for travel klipsch S4A earbuds.. so easy, such good isolation, and great quality for the cost.
Linus you should review the V-Moda M100.
They are solid like no other headphone and sound really great.
Now thats how you review headphones.... YOU WEAR THEM SO PEOPLE WHO WATCH THEM CAN SEE HOW IT LOOKS. Youre the one of the best in reviewing stuff on TH-cam Linus.
Linus is playing safe there :D
I agree that the momentum on ear sounds slightly better then the momentum, slightly more detail than the orignial momentum. It seals well and its one of the most comfortable on ear i have listened apart from beyerdynamic DT1350 which cost a bit more. Good stuff , Thumbs up !
$99 bucks at Best Buy! I got mine in black today and they are a steal at this price! Not sure if all BB's are selling at this price but its been reported in a few forums across the US.
I saw them at that price at best buy too and I was going to buy them but I didn't.....I regret it :/
Shure SE215 for in ear personal single driver (takes a bit to get used to the fit, but really worth it)
Shure SE535 for in ear work triple driver (same casing as the 215)
AudioTechnica ATH-M50 over the ear single driver (won at a trade show in college many years ago and still love them for mixing)
Razer Megalodon over the ear single driver for gaming (looking to upgrade to Taimat 7.1 for full surround with 10 drivers)
Yeah... There is a lot more to headphone quality than how many channels of audio are supported...
As an AKG fan I am very sceptical to a wire that can be disconnected from the headphones. This is largely due to the AKG K-450/K-451. They have a proprietary connection lock mechanism which means you're reliant upon the manufacturer to provide you with new ones. But the biggest problem I've encountered is how fragile the wires were and how the system lead to a broken connector, meaning I would have to buy a new pair of headphones. Dunno if this is a problem with Sennheisers headphones.
Closed ear, circumaural headsets are my thing. I've loved my Razer Megalodon headset for a while now, but I've kept my eye on the new Corsair 1500v2. By the way Linus, any chance you might get to do a review (not just an unboxing) of the Corsair 1500v2 after a month or so using it?
Also, I'd like to know from you personally Linus: what would you buy for up to 150$ for a headset, and would you use software for surround sound, hardware soundcard with virtual surround or just a surround headset?
This is a good point to make. Quality headphones take time to come into their own, both in sound quality and comfort.
The beyer dynamic dt770 headphones are probably the most comfortable and best sounding headphone. Not to mention there frequency response is 5hz to 35khz.
Would love full on circumaural headphones, but they're not the most comfortable when you live almost directly on the equator surrounded by oceans (heat + humidity)
Easier for that in colder climates
Using IEMs while on the go these days :3
I must admit I tend to prefer over the ears; if I am putting on headphones it is to drown out others or listen to something specific in as "quiet" an environment as possible. My current headphones are a set of Audio-Technica ATH-M50's which work really well.
My one wish is that I could find a really nice set of over the ear wireless headset of similar quality as those for voice comms whilst gaming. Currently using the Logitech G930 but they just don't have the same feel or sound quality.
Personally, I have three sets of headphones. My studio monitors for at home use, my portable circumaural for travelling and work, and a set of blue-tooth in ears for exercise. Each set has its own purpose and usage. I don't expect to listen to my FLAC audio collection at work or while running on the treadmill. If your budget affords it, that's the way to go, I think. If I couldn't, I would just buy one set of cans to meet all my needs and compromise some audio.
Tried these out in the store, they are actually brilliant. And its true, somehow they sound even better than the ones that cover your ear entirely.
I wouldn't go so far as to say an IEM is a good thing to compare to supra-aural or circumaural. They might sound more clean, but there's one thing they could have a problem with, which is producing soundstage. The sound of IEM's are more of an in your head feel, while depending on the headphone, full sized can produce an almost live experience. Though honestly for me, it's either circumaural or IEM's, there is no in between, and that's all about comfort.
Linus, have you unboxed and reviewed the Audio Technica ATH-M50? I have heard it's really great headphones. If you haven't you should do it.
You should check out the Marshall Monitors. They are pretty slim and portable, sound great and look awesome.
Also, over the ear is the way to go for everything but exercise, which is where IEMs shine.
Also have to say when I saw the original momentums, I really wanted them a lot. They're fashion headphones that(I assume because sennheiser) don't suck(for their price point), and they actually look good(beats are fugly IMO). That said I'm kind of sort of a one headphone kind of guy. I had JVC HA-RX700's which were great for $35, upgraded to ATH-M50's, and haven't looked back since. Next full sized upgrade I make will probably stay as my main phones.
I use IEM's for on the go. compact, stays in the ears, cuts external noise, and generally sound good for the price. JVC xxplosive earbuds is my go-to for price/performance. at my computer I want something with a bit better staging, and prefer to have some sound bleeding, so audio technica ATH-T400 is a bargain bin value for the sound
linus is one of the most unbiased reviewer on youtube.
Don't appreciate being called an idiot.
Driver size significantly effects sound quality & over ear headphones sound better than on ears everything else being equal.
I like my AKG k271 mkII's. Big (circum-aural) studio cans is exactly what they are and they do need an additional amp to be driven properly on a lot of portable devices, so not the best for portability. For really portable audio I'd go IEM, Shure SE425 sounds about right. But even then a small amp like a Fiio probably wouldn't hurt. Oh, and buy CDs (remember those?) and use Exact Audio Copy to get decent quality lossless audio files.
The Sennheiser Momentum and Sony MDR-1 are my fav headphones...I currently use the MDR-1 as my daily headphones c:
I own the original momentums and i love them. I was looking at the ie8 originally, but was sick of breaking my IEMs. The momentums are awesome.
Not sure how those compare, but I know a lot of people love the JVC's HA-RX7/900 series headphones for "bargain bin value." And the 900's are about the same price. Can't speak to the quality of the 900's, but the 700's were great for me, though they did break at the swivel point with lots of daily use.
If you can get used to the UI, -Neutron Music Player- has amazing sound.. 32/64-bit audio rendering engine, support for most Lossless formats, Dithering, and a slue of audiophilesk options.
For me if they are cheap, last a long time have clear audio with a good amount off bass for music and gaming (and mic) then they are perfect for me. I had turtle beach x11's for years they were great audio remained clear no speakers blew on me i loved them best 40 bucks i spent. Used them for xbox and pc gaming which was another plus!
49 dislikes = Beats fanboys
Just because they don't like beats doesn't mean there gonna dislike the video dipshit
not because what you said makes no sense
defc flores I meant just because
Not Because just because they like beats
these will not required a dac/amp. with an amp you will see very little difference in sound quality as the impedance is quite small. With a DAC you may see a slight difference, but that really depends on what kind of audio source you are coming from.
I have iems, sennheiser moe, ath-m50 and akg q701.
basically i love headphones and musics but nowadays i mostly use the sennheiser because its light and sounds good. it also comes with a mic. it also fits all my clothings be it formal or casual. it is a great buy.
over-ear everywhere i currently have Sennheiser HD 205 and i think they are pretty good, i am going to be upgrading to AKG K550 soon + AMP and DAC
Your review sound honest, I also like these. I like something that no everybody have in the the bus.
I very much enjoy large cans for listening and etc. Although, I do like smaller on ears when it comes to being in public or when socially interacting.
I've always had great experiences with Sennheiser products. I really don't care for a "fashion" headphone though. At home, I use my HD 280 Pros, and when I'm out or exercising, I use my OCX 685i sport IEMs. No need for anything in between for me.
Yeah I heard those are great!
Also, Apollo is still on the play store. It's now Apollo Reborn.
First I had some Philips cheapo on ears, but since I wear glasses, that didn't really work out. So I bought a 90 euro's headphones, I think they're Envivo, never heard of it before, with ANC and full size. Also has detachable cable, and can be folded. The sound quality is also very, very great, nice amount of bass, but not too much, and also very good mids and highs.
IEM's... I just love the audio quality and noise cancellation!
My local tigerdirect is closing and i got my Momentum On Ear (Samba Ver.) for $40. And they are awesome!!.
i like the look of the momentum's but my #1 priority is audio quality, second is comfort, so ill never buy on-ear but between over-ear and in-ear, I'd pick the one that sounds better
I definitely vote for different headphones for different purposes. And every purpose category has its own best models. There is no ideal model for everything.
About the on-ear - bear in mind that wearing glasses also doesnt help in terms of comfort... and its a problem with around the ear models too...
I would prefer different headphones for different situations. For mixing I would use Shure SRH 840s, for gaming Astro A40s and for on-the-go I have yet to choose a suitable candidate but I would like some quality in-ear headphones.
Got HD598, very happy with it.
you nailed this review.
Once I saw the companion cube in the background I couldn't look away. Damn!
Its that the Equaliser on the HTC makes music sounds "worse" .. you need 3rd party apps like Apollo and Power amp to change that
a cheap, $20~ pair of IEMs are best for portability, I convert my music from flac to mp3 v0 for space saving on my portable music player, and don't feel the need for a fashion headphone or a pair of portable over ear headphones, because you won't be able to tell the difference. At home I have Superlux HD668b plugged into a Xonar DG, Ive never had a problem with over/on ear headphones being uncomfortable even though I wear glasses.
I personally use headphones only at my computer and in-ear earbuds outside. Great sound, great portability, low cost.
For portability I like my Audio Technica CKS55 in hear headphones, and for comfort when I'm at my desk or something I like my Sennheiser 419.
There are lot of situations where 4 pull works. I have a nexus 4, and I used winamp and poweramp, and both can handle 4 pull audio control, and I even found that the phone could use the mic on the ear buds.
I have the original Momentums and they are great, using the HTC One and PowerAMP. Apollo doesn't have ALAC support, which is a deal breaker for me.
I've actually seen a guy in the subway with ATH-M50s... and it didn't look that bad.
I personally only use in-ears when commuting as almost all of my headphones are open-air.
watched this while using these headphones they're soooo good
always prefer iems. i dont mind stuffing the memory foam in my ear. i think its much more comfortable
ATH-M50s are a pretty common choice in that price range. They're what I would get personally.
Overear for life :D... I have a gaming headset atm, regrettably my pioneers died... I'm into gaming, and audio, and I want to get allen & heath xone xd2-53's next... Frequency Response: 5 - 33,000Hz, so unnecessarily amazing for audio production
Word of advice though, go to your local store and try out a bunch of different ones if you're going to spend a lot of money. I tried on probably about 20 different pairs before I landed on the DT440s. Everyone is different in their sound preference so going off online reviews is not such a good idea. For example I tried out the Audio Technica m50s which is a super hyped set of headphones online. I hated them. Sounded super muddy and washed out compared to the DT440s. So yeah, good luck!
if u want great sound but want to keep the small form factor of buds check out the shure SE range
me???? I think not.
I don't care how they look, I care how they sound. But since they're Sennheiser HD 448's, they look quite nice too. I have a friend who DJ's who bought Beats headphones even though he knows full well he could have bought better sounding headphones for that price. He got Beats because it looks professional to people who don't know what they're talking about - namely his crowd :L
Quite clever actually.
I really only use headphones in two scenarios, when I'm at school so I bring my earbuds because they are really easy to transport and put in their carrying case and then in my bag/pocket. Or when I am playing games and I then use my G35s to not annoy people around me and talk to my friends.
My Steelseries 7H's are perfect for everything, I wear them around in public and for gaming, a great price also.
I prefer Overears I am definitely someone who prefers substance over style if a choice has to be made
I don't listen to a lot of music on-the-go, but I have a pair of Sennheiser MX 580's for that job. At home however, I have some Beyerdynamic DT 150's, brilliantly sound, and incredibly rugged.
Thank you guys :D
99 bucks on amazon for the ivory cyber monday, great deal
