  • Time to take a look at one of my favorite video game series; Super Mario. Hailed as one of the greatest games of all time, Super Mario Bros. is praised for its impact on the gaming industry by fans and critics alike. So how does the lesser known Game Boy Color remake stack up? Stay tuned and find out.

Correction; you can only go backwards a certain distance in Deluxe. You're stopped at the same boundary as you would in the NES version. That's because the NES is 240p, while the GBC was 144p, so the GBC game takes place in a box that fits within the original NES image.

7:55 I disagree. To cheat is to act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage. You're not really being dishonest or unfair with anyone when using this method to skip levels, because the developers knowingly and purposefully inserted it in the game itself for players who happened to learn about it.

That's nostalgia for you. People who are blind with nostalgia either ignore remakes of their favorite games or trash them. But there are people who enjoy the remakes more than the originals. Like how my favorite Pokemon gerneration was 3 (Ruby & Sapphire), but it changed to 6 (X, Y, OmegaRuby & AlphaSapphire). There are other examples of prefering remakes over something you grew up with too.

Anyways I really enjoy Mario DX it's not perfect but it's better then the original I think the reason why a lot of people prefer the original was because that game had no screen crunch and I'm not about to let screen crunch ruin a game for me. Super Mario Bros deluxe came out in 1999 I believe and the GBA hasn't been released yet but Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis that was released for the GBA came out in 2006 and that game had by far the worst screen crunch ever I can excuse Super Mario Deluxe because at least that game was playable and it didn't slow down like Sonic Genesis does if I were to give Super Mario Deluxe score I would probably give it a Re Meh because while the game is pretty fun it's really starting to show it's age just like the original I prefer the All-Stars version of Mario 1 just because it has updated graphics and it looks amazing play but I still like Super Mario Deluxe just because it has more content in it another reason why Sonic Genesis sucks because that game had nothing it had an anniversary mode yes but it's pointless because it's basically the same game except you have the spin dash that's it no tails or Knuckles play through like this game is rigged thankfully Sonic Origins fix that anyways Super Mario Deluxe is a good game but not perfect

+Mark D First of all, if you want me to actually answer your comments, enable the reply option on your account. I hate it when people comment and ask for my opinion, but I can't actually reply. Second, there are quite a few differences between the Famicom Lost Levels and the SNES All Stars version. First off, the SNES version has improved 16 bit graphics and sound. It also has a save feature that will save you up to the last world you got to. You're also given access to Worlds 9-D without having to beat the game 8 times. The controls and physics are also slightly different. Not immensely different, but different enough for people to complain about how "punching bricks doesn't feel right." That more or less covers it.

Ok, so i'm all for opinions, but Halo: CE is basically did for console shooters what Super Mario Bros. did for sidescrolling platformers. Before Mario, platformers were slow and setpiece-oriented. Before Halo: CE, most console shooters were slow and deliberately dumbed down to their PC counterparts. For example, N64 Quake was slow with aiming more suited to a cannon in a 1500s-era ship combat simulator; whereas PC Quake was a very fast, frenetic affair where quickly aiming was a requirement. PS2 Half-Life was slowed down and a targeting button was implemented because the aim was complete ass. And then Halo came along, seeking to emulate the precision-based gameplay emblematic of PC shooters of the era. Instead of slowing the aim, the movement was slowed and the jump arc made floaty, while the aiming was made very natural, with a subtle auto-aim implemented to compensate for the loss of precision inherent in downgrading from mouse aim to joystick aim.
So please. Even if you don't like shooters, please have respect for a game that revolutionized the genre while also being a technical marvel for the time. Halo isn't (or at any rate, wasn't) just a generic shooter in a pile of clones.

True, these games are fun and awesome games. When I was younger, I used to play on the GBC for Super Mario Bros Deluxe and then GBA SP for the Super Mario Advance series. It's really fun revisiting these games after becoming familiar with newer Mario games.

Your reviews of these games are very well thought out, and I watch them all the time. In fact after I watched this video, I went out and bought the deluxe port from a thrift shop and played it all night. Also, in Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, you can go backwards and the screen will scroll with you instead of just staying put.

    • @fussanchez2716

It's because of screen crunch in the GBC version. Since it can't display all of the screen, it has the little section that Mario's on plus behind and upwards his position. The original did not have screen crunch so that's why you can't "Go Back" on the screen.

Please forgive me if you actually have a Game Boy Advance & that I was a little shocked, but if you're looking for more games for your Game Boy Color for reasons I can understand, I reccomend Pokemon Gold or Silver (or Possibly both if you really wanna do that), Pokemon Pinball, Zelda: Oracle of Ages or Seasons, Pokemon Puzzle Challenge, Wario Land or Kirby: Tilt & Tumble. You don't have to get them, but they're just suggestions.

It's actually that normal blocks break (and you get 50 points for trying to find a Toad) and question mark and hidden item blocks are Toads saying thank you for finding them and rewarding you with 1 to 10 hundredth of a life or with an item. Certainly makes more sense than mass genocide...

Great video man, glad to find out there were others who first experienced SMB on the GBC (which is undeniably the best version of SMB ever released imo, even with the terrible screen crunch)
The only technical thing I think you missed is that the “long jumping” in the original NES version of SMB required that you hold B, whilst in the GBC version long jumping depended on your momentum (i.e. you don’t have to hold B when you press A to long jump (granted you’re going fast enough, ofc)). This change was immediately obvious to me when I first tried playing the “Classics” SMB remake for the GBA, and had gotten an NES Mini to play the original to confirm it. Also, the fact that the SFX for the trampoline/jumping Cheeps was missing in the original (it’s really friggin noticeable)
The SMBA-inspired intro was really cool too, did you actually hack the sprites of the SMBA ROM’s intro or was it all achieved through video editing?

You've got Suzi The Sphere Hunter who's young nostalgic games are the Resident Evil games for the Gamecube but I was an adult when those came out. Then there's the Act Man who's young nostalgic games are the Halo series.
