People may criticise Alex's world records for "not being legit" but no matter how many they invalidate, Alex still has a win-win situation in his hands. That is even the worst-case scenario. lol the terrifying mood change when discovering 800 lines was greeeen
I mean... it very much is a terror. o.o
To me the greeeeeen level looks reasonably easy to see on my monitor...I guess it looks different via CRT?
By contrast, the dusk looks terrifyingly murky, yet Alex was cool with it!
I would prefer 800+ lines of green over the black/greys...not that I would be able to personally reach that :)
@@BlueSpaceLizard It's probably also different how you have to watch the screen when playing it vs. spectating, he needs to glance over at the next piece box, which is dark green on black inside a white outline
@@BlueSpaceLizard yeah, greeeeen is rather dark on a CRT. I remember Eric showing in the video about the challenges to get to rebirth, him brightening the screen on Dusk, and the green parts were nearly invisible until he brightened the screen. I'd imagine that green on that greeeeen would be pretty hard to see.

A little fun fact. The official classic tetris twitch channel was streaming a match at the time and one of the players playing heard what Alex was doing and topped out intentionally throwing a game away so everyone could watch Alex. Probably one of my most memorable moments (the person was me btw lol)
How selfless. Was it the original 16 million game? If so then little did everyone know. I remember when alex posted the new record just after scout posted a video. This is different from sports and other types of competition. They are competing but are also learning from and supporting each other. Techniques and insights are often shared and improved upon.
Fractal did that for several other Tetris greats like blue scuti when scuti beat him. Dude is just chill like that. Already a legend, got nothing to prove.

It's too bad Jonas isn't here to see all of this. Personally, he was a huge spark to all of this Tetris flame that continues to keep burning brighter. The competition is fierce, but at the same time so supportive and encouraging.
They genuinely want to see each other push the limits of what's possible.
This is peak sportsmanship.
I've heard people say that Mario 64's community, where many players only go for records to prevent specific other players from getting them, a good thing because it's "encouraging competition." This proves that's all nonsense. The healthiest community is the one where everyone is motivated to play and support each other, because it's the record that matters, not the person who gets it.
Probably the best gaming community I have ever been in.
Haven't met a single person who's known as an abuser in the Tetris community either. No, Jayne Secker doesn't count, you'd be a lot worse than her to be a genuine abuser. Worst sportmanship I've ever seen here is merely a pout and not threatening to attack the other person.

I dont know why this video popped up on my feed but I was also hooked for the whole video...as someone who has played Tetris (probably the original and its been like 30 years lol), I had no idea this was such a big community. I still dont understand the rolling action lol. But wow, well done to Alex T and his amazing records. I was impressed he could talk and play so well at the same time, and how he dealt with the poor visbility of charcoal and green. Feel like he shoukd have won more than $2.6k (or however much he won). You did a great job on this video btw! ❤
Rolling is just drumming your fingers on the back of the controller. Instead of pushing the button on the front, you hover your finger over the button (dpad) and push the controller into the button by drumming your fingers on the controller.
This is done because using 4 fingers instead of one is faster. Using the back of the controller is easier than trying to drum fingers over the dpad.
it's what they do so you can't tell they're not the one pressing the buttons.
I didn't know Tetris has such a wholesome community, yet alone I didn't know this game has so much going on

The first time I was in VC with Alex Thach, he heard an ice cream truck outside, so while staying in vc and with his camera on, he ran outside with a five dollar bill, bought an ice cream cone, and ran back inside. Truly a master of all arts, a mega master you could say.

I loved alex's attitude throughout the whole game, and the complete lack of seriousness. I am so glad you captured that both explicitly and with subtle editorial decisions, you really have grown as a filmmaker. A fitting piece on an amazing month of Tetris.
We moved like molasses in world record progression for decades. Starting from 2018 we worked our way up the ladder and the more recent world records have been quite crazy to say the least. But now the ground shakes, the CRTs switch off just before falling. The couches overturn.
2009 - 1 million
2016 - 1.2 million
2020 - 1.4 million
2024Q1 - 16 million. That's right, I removed the dot inbetween. It's that fucking impressive.
It's honestly a breath of fresh air since most speed-running/ score-hunting videos are very serious feeling. His attitude is so powerful!
To be fair, keeping relaxed IS crucial for marathons like this.
Congratulations, your video is great, really enjoyed your narration. I was aware of the world of competitive Tetris but I didn't know it's resurgence was so little ago so it was very informative as well

Every time my understanding of Tetris is completely shattered by videos like this, another one follows suit within months and I realise just how much I STILL DIDN'Y KNOW! Coming back after BlueScuti's record video, this just gives me a more reinforced respect for this entire community. Who is the greatest and most important NES Tetris player of all time?
Yes.
the tetris competitive scene is a complete anomaly when it comes to esports. I've never seen a comp scene where it feels like people aren't competing against each other, but every competitor is spurring each other on to the ultimate goal of "beating" the game, where there aren't "winners" and "losers" in a tournament, the whole thing seems like a positive sum game that reinforces the absolutely fenominal community it has, with video games being adjacent to a lot of online abuse and negativity, to find something so against the grain when it comes to esport stereotypes puts faith in humanity for me as proof we can make something good that lasts. I hope the competitive tetris scene lives on forever into the future, and every person in its legacy be remembered wholeheartedly.
This is the same vibe that the national spelling bee in Washington DC has every year. Ultimately, it’s every contestant against the dictionary not against each other. Having been there two times with my son, it is the absolute coolest “competitive” experience. I am looking forward to going to see CTWC in Pasadena for the first time this year and seeing that same healthy competition.
So far Jayne Secker is the worst person to set foot on the Tetris community I know of. I haven't met a single person here accused or exposed of doing something unforgivably wrong.
Yooo, that video about blue scuti I watched and enjoyed, and this new development is real world anime arcs! Great content my guy
My favorite part of this video is how the world champion was so happy for the kid the whole time no hate in his heart Tetris community W
I feel like we just got out of the Dead Ball Era and we’re seeing the Ruths and Gehrigs of Tetris come out. Very exciting.
The staircase with the players leading the funny little grey T piece was a cool touch.
Also the way you set up the 810 line greeeen level made it such a horrible revalation lol. The music you played during it made it so dreadful.
Good video as always
Great video. Im not a tetris person but man is the tetris community awesome. Rivals that are genuinely rooting for you to do great things. This is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love your little MS Paint style drawings. They are the best. Amazing vid as usual!
I watched the 16 mil run on TH-cam, but didn't know he broke even more records after!
Alex is a seriously impressive player and it genuinely makes me happy to watch him just demolish all these records.
(Fractal doing 800 charcoal to prove it's possible is fucking insane too!)
25:50 to find out this legend is supporting his family by being the best tetris player in the world... im gonna cry
Grow up. Why the hell would you CRY about some kid you never met? Or about his family you never met? Pathetic.
i was thinking about how much work you have to made this video.
Congrats and good job!!!
I love how this channel kept showing up in my feed before I was subscribed. Always a pleasure to watch. I guess I need to sub now. LOL
6:51 I really like the detail where the size of the bombs represents the crash probabilities.
What a legend. Breaking the WR - TWICE - in two days...then during the 2nd run, throwing out references to other recordholders. Just...legendary.
This was so good and so hyped to see the new Summoning Salt vid too. Tetris runners are badass.
This was fantastic. Fastest subscription in a hot minute.
Fractal is easily the most positive e-sports player. He's such a good dude- It's nice to see in a sea of toxicity in other e-sports.
i think its because players see it in a different perspective, generally they don't see other players as competition, their only "enemy"/opponent is the game itself, as in they are all in the same team.
@@marufranco5281 That's a great point!
Even just as a sideline enjoyer of NES Tetris, the delivery of "The Tetris saga isn't over yet" felt extremely powerful. Excited to see what the future holds!
Beautiful video. I couldn’t help but smile the whole time. Proud of Alex!
This was such a cool video to watch keep making things like this please!
This is the most hype i've ever been about Tetris, this video is that well put together, thank you and thanks to Alex, the actual goat.
... Now for the salty part, I have to write it somehow or I'm gonna go insane.
Saying "this run does not count as a legitimate record" because Alex somehow avoided game crash without knowing it is the absolute most brain dead sentence you can ever write about any Tetris run. The run is there, on the same game every other player is playing, livestreamed to your face, him having this knowledge or not doesn't change this fact. The level of delusion should not be possible in this universe.
I was mad the first time this was mentioned in the video, now after the run is done I'm actually going crazy
You're absolutely right that it should count as the world record, however, you're wrong about him not knowing he was skipping the crash. He's playing on Tetris Gym, instead of an original cart, so know full well he's skipping the crashes (the uncapped score is a dead giveaway for this) - in the video he's just trolling, pretending that he doesn't know that it won't crash. If anything it makes what he does even more impressive, just spewing utter garbage the WHOLE time whilst playing games that all Tetris players before him could only imagine. You should check out the streams or full VODs, they're really fun and FULL of him just trolling and generally being wild.
I really love how some world records ended with something that caught the players offguard, Eric's first dusk, Andy's first Charcoal, Scuti's first crash, and Alex's first 810 lines being Greeeen, not Charcoal 😭. Now that everyone knows that after 810 Greeeeen, nothing can stop you from Rebirth (at least on Gym), everyone should be prepared for our first Rebirth on Gym!
Also I remember Eric's video did say that you can dodge Charcoal 810 lines by starting at a lower level on OG card, I wonder if the same applies for Gym?
it applies the same. what level you start on will always affect which 810 line level you get, even on gym
No idea how I ended up at this video, but I watched the entire thing and enjoyed every bit of it. Congrats to Alex and all the gamers keeping Tetris alive
I gotta say every time this guy makes a video like this, it gets in my recommended and I watch every single one in awe and appreciation. I gotta give a sub at this point.
I love the Tetris community for being a place that these young talented people can thrive and succeed. Constant mind blowing news coming from this 35 year old game and all of it positive. Keep protecting and elevating each other, it's so wholesome. And keep blowing my mind.
