  • Time for one final review in the Classic Mario marathon. This time, it's the excellent SNES reincarnation of the original 4 NES games, all in one convenient package. This is Super Mario All Stars.

      I thought that was just me! I always thought "why is mario giving a peace sign next to a flying hamburger?" It made no sense to me, but I always accepted it. It wasn't until many years later when I looked more closely at the picture, that I realized that I am insane, and it was not a hamburger. Yup. I'll admit, I was dumb enough to think that for all these years I thought it was a hamburger. I'd like to still think it's a hamburger though. It amuses me.

    SMB2 on All-Stars had the ability to pick another character if you died. You can't do that on the original NES release. You had to get a Game Over or complete the level.

      Also starting with the SNES version, the slot machine mini game is a lot easier than in the NES version, making it easier to stack up on lives. This was made even easier in the GBA version with the score system added when defeating enemies and the red ace coins when you pick up all 5 of them give you a 1-Up. I also almost forgot, in the GBA version, you can wager a specific amount of coins in the slot machine mini game to give an extra boost to getting to 99 lives faster.

    • @TritnewNG

      The All-Stars version of SMB2 I find to be the definitive version of the game. Save feature, graphics that scream Mario much more and don't look as ugly in some places, it's easier to rack up lives, and the controls are a little less slippery.
      Super Mario Advance 1 is also awesome too.

    To be fair, if I stick Super Mario Bros. in an NES, I expect an NES experience. If I stick All-Stars in the SNES, I expect the SNES experience. I know it's different. Even the GBA versions are different. There's not much more for me to say, though I will agree that over time, people lose their skill with specific control and ability to cope with limitations on such, but! That's not a detriment to the game, but to the player. Remember that.

    2:02 - I think the whole brick-break thing in All-Stars is pretty bad personally. Just doesn't feel right. Since the bricks don't bounce you back down it feels like they have no substance - less like you've jumped up and hit the thing and broken it, more like you jumped up and it spontaneously exploded because you're nearby. And it slows you down if you're breaking a bunch of them. Graphics and sound upgrades are fun but they should have gotten the game mechanics right.

      And, SMB:TLL (or SMB2J) in SMAS is somewhat easier than the original FDS counterpart:
      * You do not need to beat the game eight times to go to Worlds A through D (but, as in the original, you will still have to play through the first eight Worlds without warping if you also want to go to the "fantasy" World 9).
      * To compensate for the increased difficulty over SMB1, you can save your progress at any level within a World, instead of just restarting from x-1 of that World.

Putting aside any quibbles I may have with the videos or the reviews themselves, it was really cool to see a critical look at these older titles from someone without the nostalgia goggles that a lot of the older gaming generation takes for granted. I also had no idea that the Deluxe/Advance series had so many different bits of polish over the originals and All-Stars. When SMA4 dropped on WiiU VC recently, I picked that up to play the World-e content, but I picked up SMA and SMA2 over the past weekend on your rec and I'm really enjoying them. :D Keep it up!

    My issue with the All-Stars version of SMB1, is the hit detection. In the original NES version, the tall piranha plants can be jumped over, with your foot going right through them. Making speed-running certain levels possible without slowing down. In the remake, they changed it, so now your foot actually counts as part of you, and you get hurt from it. Making running through those specific levels, harder. Especially when you're used to the NES version and aren't thinking about it.
    As for the Mario 3 comparison. I think the GBA version is best, simply for portability and the e-reader levels.

    • @VOAN
      @VOAN 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't think Nintendo intends for that to happen (the part about not getting it even though the sprite touches), it was a minor glitch effect in the game and they fixing it in later versions is of their own choice. Also remakes are not suppose to keep the same physics of the original, just play Resident Evil remake on GameCube and then go back to playing Resident Evil the original on PS1, both may have the same gameplay but some of the gameplay physics and glitches were change or fix. Same thing if you're playing Metroid: Zero Mission compare to Metroid 1. A port; on the otherhand should kept the same feature, gameplay, and physics.

    I, personally, don't find the original NES games as challenging as you make them out to be. They're perfect to me. I'm not saying this out of nostalgia, either. I grew up with SNES All-Stars, but I migrated to NES simply because it's the original.
    It is, of course, a personal preference, though.

    • @NotAFakeName1

      The Mario trilogy games aren't really challenging unless you try to do them in one go. But because they don't have save/password systems in general, that's what you've gotta do.

I rented SMAS in the Summer of 1993 and personally felt the 16 bit conversion improved on it alot.

      That's cool! I've never played the original but i played the All-Stars Super Mario Bros. 1. SNES is what got me into video games when i was a kid. Super Mario All-Stars was ported to Nintendo Wii in 2011 as Super Mario 25th Anniversary. I bought it at GameStop in 2016/early 2017.

    I do have to agree with the AVGN in the difference between these games and modern games. For me, I think the difference is the fact that I can pick up a modern game and play it with kids these days and still have a good time, but they would have a lot harder of a time trying to play the games that I grew up on. Retro games just do not compute with a lot of young new gamers.

    In my opinion, New Super Mario Bros 2 was the only "non innovative Mario game." Other than that, every Mario game feels different. The problem with NSMB2 is that it's pretty much NSMB with gold. It actually got me out of Mario for a year and a half. After playing Super Mario 3D world at a friends house, I decided to play Super Mario 3D Land. I will continue to be a Mario fan for a long time. Anyways, you just earned a like and a sub.

    The reason I'm not a huge fan of the NES is because all the "Masterpieces" usually have INFINITELY better games of the franchise on the SNES.
    Loz for NES? LOZ:ALTTP is basically the same thing but miles better.
    Metroid? Super Metroid, better in every single way.
    There are many more examples but I'd rather not list all of 'em.
    Although like you said, NES Mario actually holds up. At least Mario 2 & 3 IMO. Mario 1, sorta...

    • @ExoParadigmGamer
      @ExoParadigmGamer  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree... mostly. While many games on the NES do hold up pretty well, all things considered, certain classics like Zelda 1 and Metroid 1 feel lacking in comparison to their 16 bit sequels. I much prefer the SNES to the NES for its overall objectively higher quality standard. There are still plenty of great NESTER games, and the Marios are among them.

    • @TXFDA
      @TXFDA 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      While I agree that most of the popular NES games have better versions on later consoles, that doesn't mean NES isn't still good. A lot of people forget that. (Not saying you do or not, just..in general). I've seen a lot of people use that reasoning you used, to say the NES is bad, because better games exist. Which simply isn't true. Sure, Super Metroid might be better than NES Metroid, but NES Metroid is still fun and worth playing. Same with the original Zelda games, Mario games, etc.
      As for if a game holds up, that's all a matter of opinion really. I find most NES games hold up to me, even the 'not so good' ones. I don't mind the NES limitations and stuff. I actually enjoy them, sometimes more than SNES.

      I understand what you're saying and it's very valid, but I gotta say I'm still not TOO huge a fan of NES because even then there are a ton of remakes for games on the NES, Metroid has Metroid Zero Mission which is just...mwah. BUT, that doesn't mean the NES is not good and still not fun. And I am grateful for the fact that it gave us basically what video games are today.

    • @TXFDA
      @TXFDA 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Blue Torrent Yeah, I get that there's better versions of most of the good games on other consoles. It's probably just me. I'm one of those people that actually enjoys the 8-bit pixely aesthetic, and simplicity of NES games over the more complicated later versions.
      Although admittedly, adding the Map to Metroid was the best idea ever. There's actually a rom hack of the original Metroid that adds an in-game map to it. Makes it a bit more fun.

    I wouldn't call that "raging". Whoever wrote it sounds pretty calm, explains the points clearly, and doesn't throw any insults at the game nor the dealer. They sound displeased, not raging. There's a big difference.
    The acceleration issue may sound like "nerd stuff", but casual players can get annoyed by that type of stuff too, especially if they die because of it. While it doesn't bother me personally, it's still a valid criticism, if minor.
    And I would NEVER label someone a "raging nerd" for being concerned about the quality of a product before they spend their money on it.

      Their is one thing the GBA version of Super Mario World that gets more consistency compared to the SNES versions, the amount of dragon coins in the levels. In the SNES version, only some levels have all 5 dragon coins in them while some others ones that are supposed to have 5 coins in them do not. It is an inconsistent pattern and you are never able to collect all dragon coins to completion in the SNES versions. In the GBA version, every single level has 5 dragon coins in them and it is possible to get them all.

    The second you start accusing Rolfe or other retro fans of being blinded by nostalgia, you are start falling into a horrible cliche of new gen gamers. And it dilutes your credibility. Stop talking about nostalgia. Everyone has nostalgia, and you are blinded by your nostalgia of more current gen games. This is a pointless and cyclical argument. If you are too young to understand how to objectively respect the retro argument without undermining retro enthusiasts, then you're likely too young to be making a show of this nature. There is validity to many of the claims that gamers like James Rolfe make. Only someone caught up in their own delusional world would dismiss an entire generation AND the influence those games carry by calling _their_ opinions "delusions."
